We study a one-dimensional supercritical branching random walk in a non-i.i.d. random environment, which considers both the branching mechanism and the step transition. This random environment is constructed using a recurrent Markov chain on a finite or countable state space. Criteria of (strong) recurrence and transience are presented for this model.

Let G be an infinite, locally finite, connected graph with bounded degree. We show that G supports phase transition in all or none of the following five models: bond percolation, site percolation, the Ising model, the Widom-Rowlinson model and the beach model. Some, but not all, of these implications hold without the bounded degree assumption. We finally give two examples of (random) unbounded degree graphs in which phase transition in all five models can be established: supercritical Galton-Watson trees, and Poisson-Voronoi tessellations of ℝd for d ≥ 2.

The random triangle model was recently introduced as a random graph model that captures the property of transitivity that is often found in social networks, i.e. the property that given that two vertices are second neighbors, they are more likely to be neighbors. For parameters p ∊ [0,1] and q ≥ 1, and a finite graph G = (V, E), it assigns to elements η of {0,1}E probabilities which are proportional to where t(η) is the number of triangles in the open subgraph. In this paper the behavior of the random triangle model on the two-dimensional triangular lattice is studied. By mapping the system onto an Ising model with external field on the hexagonal lattice, it is shown that phase transition occurs if and only if p = (q−1)−2/3 and q > qc for a critical value qc which turns out to equal It is furthermore demonstrated that phase transition cannot occur unless p = pc(q), the critical value for percolation of open edges for given q. This implies that for q ≥ qc, pc(q) = (q−1)−2/3.

An interacting particle system modelling competing growth on the ℤ2 lattice is defined as follows. Each x ∈ ℤ2 is in one of the states {0,1,2}. 1's and 2's remain in their states for ever, while a 0 flips to a 1 (a 2) at a rate equal to the number of its neighbours which are in state 1 (2). This is a generalization of the well-known Richardson model. 1's and 2's may be thought of as two types of infection, and 0's as uninfected sites. We prove that if we start with a single site in state 1 and a single site in state 2, then there is positive probability for the event that both types of infection reach infinitely many sites. This result implies that the spanning tree of time-minimizing paths from the origin in first passage percolation with exponential passage times has at least two topological ends with positive probability.

We give an alternative proof of a point-process version of the FKG–Holley–Preston inequality which provides a sufficient condition for stochastic domination of probability measures, and for positive correlations of increasing functions.

The distributions of nearest neighbour random walks on hypercubes in continuous time t 0 can be expressed in terms of binomial distributions; their limit behaviour for t, N → ∞ is well-known. We study here these random walks in discrete time and derive explicit bounds for the deviation of their distribution from their counterparts in continuous time with respect to the total variation norm. Our results lead to a recent asymptotic result of Diaconis, Graham and Morrison for the deviation from uniformity for N →∞. Our proofs use Krawtchouk polynomials and a version of the Diaconis–Shahshahani upper bound lemma. We also apply our methods to certain birth-and-death random walks associated with Krawtchouk polynomials.

Motivated by a statistical application, we consider continuum percolation in two or more dimensions, restricted to a large finite box, when above the critical point. We derive surface order large deviation estimates for the volume of the largest cluster and for its intersection with the boundary of the box. We also give some natural extensions to known, analogous results on lattice percolation.

Consider a homogeneous Poisson process in with density ρ, and add the origin as an extra point. Now connect any two points x and y of the process with probability g(x − y), independently of the point process and all other pairs, where g is a function which depends only on the Euclidean distance between x and y, and which is nonincreasing in the distance. We distinguish two critical densities in this model. The first is the infimum of all densities for which the cluster of the origin is infinite with positive probability, and the second is the infimum of all densities for which the expected size of the cluster of the origin is infinite. It is known that if , then the two critical densities are non-trivial, i.e. bounded away from 0 and ∞. It is also known that if g is of the form , for some r > 0, then the two critical densities coincide. In this paper we generalize this result and show that under the integrability condition mentioned above the two critical densities are always equal.

A class of non-linear stochastic models is introduced. Phase transitions, critical points and the domain of attraction are discussed in detail for some concrete examples. For one of the examples the explicit expression for the domain of attraction and the rates of convergence are obtained.

Let ℱ be a countable plane triangulation embedded in ℝ2 in such a way that no bounded region contains more than finitely many vertices, and let Pp be Bernoulli (p) product measure on the vertex set of ℱ. Let E be the event that a fixed vertex belongs to an infinite path whose vertices alternate states sequentially. It is shown that the AB percolation probability function θΑΒ (p) = Pp(E) is non-decreasing in p for 0 ≦ p ≦ ½. By symmetry, θ AΒ(p) is therefore unimodal on [0, 1]. This result partially verifies a conjecture due to Halley and stands in contrast to the examples of Łuczak and Wierman.

We introduce and study a novel type of first-passage percolation problem on where the associated first-passage time measures the density of interface between two types of sites. If the types, designated + and –, are independently assigned their values with probability p and (1 — p) respectively, we show that the density of interface is non-zero provided that both species are subcritical with regard to percolation, i.e. pc > p > 1 – pc. Furthermore, we show that as p ↑ pc or p ↓ (1 – pc), the interface density vanishes with scaling behavior identical to the correlation length of the site percolation problem.

For an independent percolation model on , where is a homogeneous tree and is a one-dimensional lattice, it is shown, by verifying that the triangle condition is satisfied, that the percolation probability θ (p) is a continuous function of p at the critical point pc, and the critical exponents , γ, δ, and Δ exist and take their mean-field values. Some analogous results for Markov fields on are also obtained.

It is known [8] that a certain class of bond-decorated graphs exhibits multiple AB percolation phase transitions. Sufficient conditions are given under which the corresponding AB percolation critical probabilities may be identified as points of intersection of the graph of a certain polynomial with the boundary of the percolative region of an associated two-parameter bond-site percolation model on the underlying undecorated graph. The main result of the article is used to prove that the graphs in [8] exhibit multiple AB percolation critical probabilities. The possibility of identifying AB percolation critical exponents with corresponding limits for the bond-site model is discussed.

We give upper bounds on the critical values for oriented percolation and some interacting particle systems by computing their behavior on small finite sets.
