In studying compact convex sets it is usually assumed that the compact convex set X is contained in a Hausdorff topological vector space L where the topology on X is the relative topology. Usually one assumes that L is locally convex. The reason for this is that most of the major theorems such as the Krein-Milman, Choquet-Bishop-de Leeuw, and most of the fixed point theorems require that there be enough continuous affine functions on X to separate points.

Let X be a topological space, a finite covering of X (the words ‘covering’ and ‘cover’ are used interchangeably). We say that has the almost fixed point property for a class of continuous maps f : X → X if for all there is an x ∈ X and such that x ∈ U and f(x) ∈ U, or, equivalently, if there is a such that .

In this paper we prove a cardinal inequality for supercompact Uausdorff spaces which gives insight into the cellular structure of such spaces and yields new examples of compact Uausdorff non-supercompact spaces.

In this paper we study some properties of the semigroups associated with the linear retarded functional differential equations (FDE) in the setting of Banach spaces Rn X Lp( — h, 0, Rn), 1 < p < ∞. Earlier investigations of these equations via semigroups defined on the customary space C([ — h, 0], Rn) played an important role in problems of stability, oscillations, bifurcation, asymptotic behavior etc. [15].

An index four simple group is a finite simple group, G, with a self-centralizing Sylow p-subgroup whose normalizer in G has order 4p. In this paper index four simple groups having a non-principal ordinary irreducible character of small degree in the principal p-block are studied.

A *-ring is an associative ring R with an anti-automorphism * of period 2 (involution). Furnishing the open unit ball of a complex Hilbert space with the Carathéodory-differential metric, we construct a model which plays a similar role as that of the Poincaré model for the hyperbolic geometry.

In this note we study the question whether or not through a point in the model not lying on a given line there exists a unique perpendicular, and give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a unique perpendicular. This enables us to divide a triangle into two right triangles. Many trigonometric identities in a general triangle are easy consequences of various identities which hold on a right triangle.

In this paper we consider the construction of a norm-continuous index theory for unitary equivalence up to commutative normality of operators on a separable Jlilhert space, and establish some essentially best possible results in this direction for operators which can be written as direct sums of weighted shifts and normal operators. Indeed, for such operators we establish both a normcontinuous analogue and a norm-continuous extension of the elegant results of L. Brown, R. Douglas and P. Fillmore [4].

This paper concerns relative complexity of an algebraic theory T and its affine part A, primarily for theories TR of modules over a ring R. TR, AR and R itself are all, or none, finitely generated or finitely related. The minimum number of relations is the same for TR and AR. The minimum number of generators is a very crude invariant for these theories, being 1 for AR if it is finite, and 2 for TR if it is finite (and 1 ≠ 0 in R). The minimum arity of generators is barely less crude: 2 for TR} and 2 or 3 for AR (1 ≠ 0). AR is generated by binary operations if and only if R admits no homomorphism onto Z2.

This paper answers affirmatively a question of Pavol Hell [2]: if a graph admits a full n-colouring for every finite n ≧ n0, does it admit an infinité full colouring? (A colouring is full if every pair of distinct colour classes is joined by at least one edge).

There are theorems in which some classes of topological spaces are characterized by means of properties of mappings of these spaces into a single space. For example, it is well known that a compactum X is at most n-dimensional if and only if no mapping of X irto an (n + l)-cube has a stable value [5, Theorems VI. 1-2, pp. 75-77]. Also, a curve X is tree-like if and only if no mapping of X into a figure eight is homotopically essential [1, Theorem 1, pp. 74-75; 8, p. 91]. By a curve we mean any at most 1-dimensional continuum; a continuum is a connected compactum; a compactum is a compact metric space, and a mapping is a continuous function. The aim of the present paper is to prove another theorem of this type. We distinguish a class of curves and show that it is characterized by imposing the condition that no weakly confluent mapping [13] can transform the given curve onto a simple triod (see 2.4). A related result is applied to a generalized branch-point covering theorem (see 3.2). In addition, two results are obtained in which we establish some characterizations of weakly confluent images and preimages of the product of the Cantor set and an arc (see 1.1 and 2.2). Continua that are such images turn out to be identical with regular curves (see 1.3).

One often encounters problems that are difficult as they are, but become manageable when translated to a different category. Thus very often, problems on Boolean algebras are answered by first transferring them to problems on Boolean spaces. (See, for example, [7]). It is with this spirit that we approach in this paper two problems on Boolean algebras. These problems are two decades old, and are considered to be outstanding problems in the field.

The stable homeomorphism conjecture in dimension n,SHC (n), says that every orientation preserving homeomorphism of Sn is stable, i.e. can be written as the composition of homeomorphisms, each of which are the identity on some open set. This is equivalent to the homeomorphism being isotopic to the identity [6]. Call a homeomorphism k-stable if it is isotopic to a homeomorphism which is the identity on Sk ⊂ Sn.

If any component of a has the entry oo the corresponding component of a-1 has entry zero. The convolution of two sequences s and q is given by s * q. The Toeplitz martix associated with sequence s is the lower triangular matrix defined by tnk = sn-k (n ≧ k), tnk = 0 (n < k). Paul Erdôs has suggested an investigation of infinite groups from the point of view of the partition relations of set theory. In particular, he suggested that given a group G, one considers the graph T with vertex set G whose edges are the pairs ﹛g, h﹜ which do not commute.

The relationship between compact and countably compact topological spaces has been studied by many topologists. In particular an important question is: “What conditions will make a countably compact space compact?” Conditions which are “covering axioms” have been extensively studied. The best results of this type appear in [19]. We wish to examine countably compact spaces which are separable or perfectly normal. Recall that a space is perfect if and only if every closed subset is a Gδ, and that a space is perfectly normal if and only if it is both perfect and normal. We show that the following statement follows from MA +┐ CH and thus is consistent with the usual axioms of set theory: Every countably compact perfectly normal space is compact. This result is Theorem 3 and can be understood without reading much of what goes before.
