Summary
It's seldom that a shower, dank and foul,
reaches from garden shade, where raindrops hear
that they are falling, and the birds declare
their resting, to the pedestal —
in mint and coriander — making clear
the summer hours. Consider, though,
the lady (whom a serving-man attends)
lowering her broad-brimmed hat down as she bends
above the rim: then shadows grow
dark on a face that will not show.
(Or when the sudden summer rain comes down
from tumult in the tree that shakes its crown.
Failing the shadow it no longer throws,
the gnomon can't express the sort of time
that in the flowering branch and blossomed lime,
suddenly lights the greenhouse till it glows.)
Schlafmohn
Abseits im Garten blüht der böse Schlaf,
in welchem die, die heimlich eingedrungen,
die Liebe fanden junger Spiegelungen,
die willig waren, offen und konkav,
und Träume, die mit aufgeregten Masken
auftraten, riesiger durch die Kothurne —:
das alles stockt in diesen oben flasken
weichlichen Stengeln, die die Samenurne
(nachdem sie lang, die Knospe abwärts tragend,
zu welken meinten) festverschlossen heben:
gefranste Kelche auseinanderschlagend,
die fieberhaft das Mohngefäß umgeben.
