Summary

With a peculiar smile, he brushed aside

the smoking flask half-still now. Now he knew

just what he needed; what he must provide

before that Noble Thing could be made true

down there. He needed: time, to wax and wane;

a thousand years for him and for this pear

in which it bubbled; stars to fill his brain;

and in his consciousness, at least La Mer.

The dread enormity that he had willed,

he let loose in the night, and back it fled

to God, where it resumed its ancient measure.

But babbling like a drunk, he cursed, then sprawled

across the secret drawer and coveted

what he had had — the golden treasure.

Der Reliquienschrein

Draußen wartete auf alle Ringe

und auf jedes Kettenglied

Schicksal, das nicht ohne sie geschieht.

Drinnen waren sie nur Dinge, Dinge

die er schmiedete; denn vor dem Schmied

war sogar die Krone, die er bog,

nur ein Ding, ein zitterndes und eines,

das er finster wie im Zorn erzog

zu dem Tragen eines reinen Steines.

Seine Augen wurden immer kälter

von dem kalten täglichen Getränk;

hingeworfen, weinend, nichtmehr wagend,

seine Seele niederschlagend

vor dem ruhigen Rubin,

der ihn zu gewahren schien

und ihn, plötzlich um sein Dasein fragend,

ansah wie aus Dynastien.
