Summary

Escaping often as a child from those

who watched, to feel the night, the wind that roars

(both were so different when indoors),

she'd run to see them in their birthing throes.

But never had a storm at night so shorn

the massive park-grounds of their elements the way

that now its violence left her conscience torn.

For he had snatched her from the silken ladder

and carried her far off; far off, he'd led her …

until the coach was all there was.

In that black coach she scents the danger

of the hunt; the black coach smells

as danger does.

And in it, she could feel the cold exchange

from coach to her — its blackness now was in her fear.

Into her collar fur she plunged,

then touched all that would still be hers — her hair —

and heard a stranger speaking something strange:

“I'mwithyouhere.”

Rosa Hortensie
