Summary
Off in the garden blooms the evil sleep
into which those who sank became the lovers
of such young images as self discovers —
they were wide open, willing, caved-in deep —
and dreams. (In febrile masks, the dream appears,
giant amidst the pageant as it churns.)
All of this thickens in the long, thin spears —
indolent stems that lift the wrapped-up urns
of seeds so tightly-clenched. (And long delayed
in wilting, bearing buds turned downside-up.)
They burst apart, their calyxes all frayed
and feverish as they choke each poppy cup.
Auf einmal kreischt ein Neid durch die Volière;
sie aber haben sich erstaunt gestreckt
und schreiten einzeln ins Imaginäre.
