It is a longstanding conjecture that given a subset E of a metric space, if E has unit \mathscr {H}^{\alpha }\llcorner E$\mathscr {H}^{\alpha }\llcorner E$ -density almost everywhere, then E is an \alpha $\alpha$ -rectifiable set. We prove this conjecture under the assumption that the ambient metric space is a homogeneous group with a smooth-box norm.

The main result of the present article is a Rademacher-type theorem for intrinsic Lipschitz graphs of codimension k\leq n$k\leq n$ in sub-Riemannian Heisenberg groups {\mathbb H}^{n}${\mathbb H}^{n}$ . For the purpose of proving such a result, we settle several related questions pertaining both to the theory of intrinsic Lipschitz graphs and to the one of currents. First, we prove an extension result for intrinsic Lipschitz graphs as well as a uniform approximation theorem by means of smooth graphs: both of these results stem from a new definition (equivalent to the one introduced by B. Franchi, R. Serapioni and F. Serra Cassano) of intrinsic Lipschitz graphs and are valid for a more general class of intrinsic Lipschitz graphs in Carnot groups. Second, our proof of Rademacher’s theorem heavily uses the language of currents in Heisenberg groups: one key result is, for us, a version of the celebrated constancy theorem. Inasmuch as Heisenberg currents are defined in terms of Rumin’s complex of differential forms, we also provide a convenient basis of Rumin’s spaces. Eventually, we provide some applications of Rademacher’s theorem including a Lusin-type result for intrinsic Lipschitz graphs, the equivalence between {\mathbb H}${\mathbb H}$ -rectifiability and ‘Lipschitz’ {\mathbb H}${\mathbb H}$ -rectifiability and an area formula for intrinsic Lipschitz graphs in Heisenberg groups.

This paper develops new techniques for studying smooth dynamical systems in the presence of a Carnot–Carathéodory metric. Principally, we employ the theory of Margulis and Mostow, Métivier, Mitchell, and Pansu on tangent cones to establish resonances between Lyapunov exponents. We apply these results in three different settings. First, we explore rigidity properties of smooth dominated splittings for Anosov diffeomorphisms and flows via associated smooth Carnot–Carathéodory metrics. Second, we obtain local rigidity properties of higher hyperbolic rank metrics in a neighborhood of a locally symmetric one. For the latter application we also prove structural stability of the Brin–Pesin asymptotic holonomy group for frame flows. Finally, we obtain local rigidity properties for uniform lattice actions on the ideal boundary of quaternionic and octonionic symmetric spaces.

We present self-contained proofs of the stability of the constants in the volume doubling property and the Poincaré and Sobolev inequalities for Riemannian approximations in Carnot groups. We use an explicit Riemannian approximation based on the Lie algebra structure that is suited for studying nonlinear subelliptic partial differential equations. Our approach is independent of the results obtained in [11].

We develop the relationship between quaternionic hyperbolic geometry and arithmetic counting or equidistribution applications, that arises from the action of arithmetic groups on quaternionic hyperbolic spaces, especially in dimension 2. We prove a Mertens counting formula for the rational points over a definite quaternion algebra A over {\mathbb{Q}}${\mathbb{Q}}$ in the light cone of quaternionic Hermitian forms, as well as a Neville equidistribution theorem of the set of rational points over A in quaternionic Heisenberg groups.

As was shown by a part of the authors, for a given (2,3,5)$(2,3,5)$-distribution D$D$ on a five-dimensional manifold Y$Y$, there is, locally, a Lagrangian cone structure C$C$ on another five-dimensional manifold X$X$ which consists of abnormal or singular paths of (Y,D)$(Y,D)$. We give a characterization of the class of Lagrangian cone structures corresponding to (2,3,5)$(2,3,5)$-distributions. Thus, we complete the duality between (2,3,5)$(2,3,5)$-distributions and Lagrangian cone structures via pseudo-product structures of type G_{2}$G_{2}$. A local example of nonflat perturbations of the global model of flat Lagrangian cone structure which corresponds to (2,3,5)$(2,3,5)$-distributions is given.

For a fat sub-Riemannian structure, we introduce three canonical Ricci curvatures in the sense of Agrachev–Zelenko–Li. Under appropriate bounds we prove comparison theorems for conjugate lengths, Bonnet–Myers type results and Laplacian comparison theorems for the intrinsic sub-Laplacian. As an application, we consider the sub-Riemannian structure of 3-Sasakian manifolds, for which we provide explicit curvature formulas. We prove that any complete 3-Sasakian structure of dimension 4d+3$4d+3$, with d>1$d>1$, has sub-Riemannian diameter bounded by \unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}$\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}$. When d=1$d=1$, a similar statement holds under additional Ricci bounds. These results are sharp for the natural sub-Riemannian structure on \mathbb{S}^{4d+3}$\mathbb{S}^{4d+3}$ of the quaternionic Hopf fibrations:

In this paper, we define and study strong right-invariant sub-Riemannian structures on the group of diffeomorphisms of a manifold with bounded geometry. We derive the Hamiltonian geodesic equations for such structures, and we provide examples of normal and of abnormal geodesics in that infinite-dimensional context. The momentum formulation gives a sub-Riemannian version of the Euler–Arnol’d equation. Finally, we establish some approximate and exact reachability properties for diffeomorphisms, and we give some consequences for Moser theorems.

We discuss the subRiemannian geometry induced by two noncommutative vector fields which are left invariant on the Lie group {{\mathbb{S}}^{3}}${{\mathbb{S}}^{3}}$.

The equivalence between contact and Pansu differentiable maps on Carnot groups is established within the class of maps that are C1 with respect to the ambient Euclidean structure.

The Heisenberg group is considered as the boundary of a manifold. A class of hypersurfaces in this manifold can be regarded as copies of the Heisenberg group. The properties of geodesics in the interior and on the hypersurfaces are worked out in detail. These properties are strongly related to those of the Heisenberg group.

We study the Riemannian Laplace-Beltrami operator L$L$ on a Riemannian manifold with Heisenberg group {{H}_{1}}${{H}_{1}}$ as boundary. We calculate the heat kernel and Green's function for L$L$, and give global and small time estimates of the heat kernel. A class of hypersurfaces in this manifold can be regarded as approximations of {{H}_{1}}${{H}_{1}}$. We also restrict L$L$ to each hypersurface and calculate the corresponding heat kernel and Green's function. We will see that the heat kernel and Green's function converge to the heat kernel and Green's function on the boundary.
