What does a simple ring with unity, a topological T0-space and a graph that has at most one loop but may possess edges, have in common? In this note we show that they all are Brown–McCoy semisimple. Suliński has generalised the well-known Brown–McCoy radical class of associative rings (cf. [1]) to a category which satisfies certain conditions. In [3] he defines a simple object, a modular class of objects and the Brown–McCoy radical class as the upper radical class determined by a modular class in a category which, among others, has a zero object and kernels. To include categories like that of topological spaces and graphs, we use the concepts of a trivial object and a fibre. We then follow Suliński and define a simple object, a modular class of objects and then the Brown–McCoy radical class as the upper radical class determined by a modular class.

In [4] we have shown that any two semi-simple weighted convolution algebras L1(ω1) and L1(ω2) are isomorphic. In this paper, given any two radical weighted convolution algebras L1(ω1) and L1(ω2) we find necessary and sufficient conditions, in terms of ω1 and ω2, for L1(ω1) and L1(ω2) to be isomorphic.

The concept of a laminated near-ring was introduced in [2]. We recall briefly what it is. Let N be a near-ring and let a∈N. Define a new multiplication on N by x * y = xay for all x,y∈N. With this new multiplication and the same addition as before we have another near-ring which we denote by Na. The near-ring Na is referred to as a laminated near-ring, the original near-ring N is the base near-ring and a is the laminator or laminating element.

A real Jordan algebra which is also a Banach space with a norm which satisfies

for each pair a, b of elements, is said to be a JB-algebra. A JB-algebra which is also a Banach dual space is said to be a JBW-algebra.

Let X be a real or complex Banach space with norm ∥·∥· Let G denote the set of all isometric automorphisms on X. Then G is a bounded subgroup of the group of all invertible operators GL(X) in B(X). We shall call G the group of isometries with respect to the norm ∥·∥· A bounded subgroup of GL(X) is said to be maximal if it is not contained in any larger bounded subgroup. The Banach space X has maximal norm if G is maximal. Hilbert spaces have maximal norm. For the (real or complex) spaces c0, lp (1≦p<∞), Lp[0,1] (1≦p<∞), Pelczynski and Rolewicz have shown that the standard norms are maximal ([3], pp. 252–265). In finite dimensional spaces the only maximal groups of isometries are the groups of orthogonal transformations. Given any bounded group H in B(X), X can be renormed equivalently so that each T∈H is an isometry, by ‖x‖1=sup{|Tx‖; T∈H}. Therefore corresponding to every maximal subgroup G there is at least one maximal norm for which G is the group of isometries. In this paper we shall investigate those maximal groups G for which there is only one maximal norm with G as its group of isometries.

Let G be a group, and let r = r(t) be an element of the free product G * 〈G〉 of G with the infinite cyclic group generated by t. We say that the equation r(t) = 1 has a solution in G if the identity map on G extends to a homomorphism from G * 〈G〉 to G with r in its kernel. We say that r(t) = 1 has a solution over G if G can be embedded in a group H such that r(t) = 1 has a solution in H. This property is equivalent to the canonical map from G to 〈G, t|r〉 (the quotient of G * 〈G〉 by the normal closure of r) being injective.

This paper is concerned with d.g. near-rings and their relationship to faithful d.g. near-rings. For general definitions and results, we refer to Pilz [5]. We use left near-rings where he uses right near-rings, but otherwise there is little difference. This work follows earlier work [3], [4] and Mahmood [2]. Before outlining the contents of the paper we present a précis of the definitions.

Let d(<0) denote a squarefree integer. The ideal class group of the imaginary quadratic field has a cyclic 2-Sylow subgroup of order ≦8 in precisely the following cases (see for example [5] and [6]):

where p and q denote primes and g, h, u and v are positive integers. The class number of is denoted by h(d) and in the above cases h(d) = 0(mod 8). For cases (i), (ii) and (iii) the authors [6] have given necessary and sufficient conditions for h(d) to be divisible by 16. In this paper we do the same for case (iv) extending the results of Brown [4].

Is it possible for a finite p-group to have only one conjugacy class of maximal size? This question was opened to public consideration in a paper [2] of John Meldrum dealing with the breadth of the wreath product of finite p-groups. His Theorem 21 gives a formula for the breadth of A wr B in terms of various constants including the breadths of A and B, a formula which differs according to whether or not A has a unique largest class. Hence the question.

The purpose of this paper is to describe , the bordism module of unitary T-manifolds, where T denotes the circle group S1. We give both an algebraic and a geometric description. The algebraic result is

where I = (i(1), i(2),…i(2n)) runs through all finite ordered 2n-tuples (n≧0) of non-negative integers which satisfy the conditions (a) i(l) + i(2n)≠0 and (b) if i(2n)≠0 then i(2n)=≠. The isomorphism is also described geometrically and this leads to geometric generators of .

For any element a of a semigroup (S,·), we may define a “sandwich” operation ∘ on the set S by x ∘ y = xay (x, y ∈ S). Under this operation the set S is again a semigroup; we denote this semigroup by (S, a) and call it a variant of S. Variants of semigroups of binary relations have been studied by Chase [6, 7]. In this paper we consider variants of arbitrary semigroups.

An elementary fact about ideal lattices of bounded distributive lattices is that they belong to the equational class ℬω of all distributive p-algebras (distributive lattices with pseudocomplementation). The lattice of equational subclasses of ℬω is known to be a chain

of type (ω+l, where ℬ0 is the class of Boolean algebras and ℬ1 is the class of Stone algebras. G. Grätzer in his book [7] asks after a characterisation of those bounded distributive lattices whose ideal lattice belongs to ℬ (n≧1). The answer to the problem for the case n = 0 is well known: the ideal lattice of a bounded lattice L is Boolean if and only if L is a finite Boolean algebra. D. Thomas [10] recently solved the problem for the case n = 1 utilising the order-topological duality theory for bounded distributive lattices and in [5] W. Bowen obtained another proof of Thomas's result via a construction of the dual space of the ideal lattice of a bounded distributive lattice from its dual space. In this paper we give a short, purely algebraic proof of Thomas's result and deduce from it necessary and sufficient conditions for the ideal lattice of a bounded distributive lattice to be a relative Stone algebra.

The complex Stiefel manifold Wn,k, where n≦k≦1, is a space whose points are k-frames in Cn. By using the formula of McCarty [4], we will make the calculations of the Whitehead products in the groups π*(Wn,k). The case of real and quaternionic will be treated by Nomura and Furukawa [7]. The product [[η],j1l] appears as generator of the isotropy group of the identity map of Stiefel manifolds. In this note we use freely the results of the 2-components of the homotopy groups of real and complex Stiefel manifolds such as Paechter [8], Hoo-Mahowald [1], Nomura [5], Sigrist [9] and Nomura-Furukawa [6].

Let A and B be function algebras. We generalise the Nagasawa theorem by proving that the Banach–Mazur distance between the underlying Banach spaces of A and B, is close to one if and only if they are almost isomorphic, that is if and only if there is a linear map T from A onto B such that ∥T−1(Tf · Tg)−fg∥≦ε∥f∥∥g∥.

Zubov states an elegant necessary and sufficient limit set condition for positive orbital stability of compact invariant sets in his book “Metody A. M. Lyapunova i ih Primenenie” [11]. Stated in terms of our terminology of L– for the negative limit set, Zubov's proposition is as follows: A necessary and sufficient condition for positive stability of a compact invariant set M isL–(X\M)∩M=Ø. Unfortunately, Zubov's condition L–(X\M)∩M=Ø has subsequently been shown to be necessary but not sufficient (see [9]). Bass and Ura devote considerable effort in [2] and [9[ to correcting Zubov's proposition and Desbrow obtains additional results principally concerning unstable sets in [6] and [7]. Ura gives his classical corrected prolongational version of Zubov's assertion on locally compact phase spaces in [9] and extends it to any closed invariant set with compact boundary on such spaces in [10].
