The /z-cobordism theorem in [8], the generalized Poincaré conjecture in higher dimensions in [20] and several other results in differential topology are proved by using the following theorems of Morse theory:

(1) the elimination of critical points;

(2) the existence of nondegenerate functions for which the descending and ascending bowls have normal intersection;

(3) the alteration of function values at critical points. (For the details see below.)

We shall give short and elementary pr∞fs of these theorems together with some stronger statements than the ones given in [8-13] or [19].

The theorems are proved for noncompact manifolds rather than for compact manifolds since, by a trivial modification of the manifold (deleting the boundary or one point) the case of compact manifolds is included.

In any group G, the commutator subgroup G' is contained in G2, the subgroup of G generated by the squares in G. Thus any product of commutators can be written as a product of squares in G. For instance, the commutator [x, y] ( = xyx-1y-1) can be expressed as the product of three squares: [x, y] = x2(x-1y)2(y-1)2. Roger Lyndon and Morris Newman have made the interesting observation [4, Theorem 1] that, in this case, the number three is minimal in the sense that there are groups which contain commutators not expressible as the product of fewer than three squares.

Transferable and sharply transferable lattices were defined and characterized in [1]. Finite sublattices of free lattices were studied in [2] and a characterization of them given in [3]. In this paper, we will show that the class of finite sharply transferable lattices coincides with the class of finite sublattices of free lattices.

It is well known that epimorphisms in the category Top (Top1, respectively) of topological spaces (T0spaces, respectively) and continuous maps are precisely onto continuous maps. Since every mono-reflective subcategory of a category is also epi-reflective and every embedding in Top (Top1, respectively) is a monomorphism, there is no nontrivial reflective subcategory of Top (Top1 respectively) such that every reflection is an embedding. However, in the category Top0 of T0-spaces and continuous maps as well as in the category Haus of Hausdorff spaces and continuous maps, there are epimorphisms which are not onto. Moreover, every reflection of a reflective subcategory of Top0, which contains a non T1-space, is an embedding [16].

In [1], C. C. Chen and G. Grâtzer developed a method for studying Stone algebras by associating with each Stone algebra L, a uniquely determined triple (C(L), D(L), ɸ (L)), consisting of a Boolean algebra C(L), a distributive lattice D(L), and a connecting map ɸ(L). This approach has been successfully exploited by various investigators to determine properties of Stone algebras (e.g. H. Lakser [9] characterized the injective hulls of Stone algebras by means of this technique). The present paper is a continuation of this program.

Let K be a field and Mn﹛K) denote the vector space of n X n matrices over K. Marcus [4] posed the following general problem: Let W be a subspace of Mn(K) and S a subset of W. Describe the set L(S, W) of all linear transformations T on W such that T(S) is contained in S.

It is easy to see that a localization (in the sense of [9]) of a simply connected co H-space (equivalently a simply connected space of Liusternik-Schnirelman category one) is again a co H-space. (All spaces in this paper will be pointed and have the based homotopy type of a connected CW complex; and all maps will preserve base-points.) We show that the category of a simply connected space does not increase on localizing. We give an example to show that the hypothesis simple-connectivity is crucial. In strong contrast, the dual result only requires connectivity.

In this paper we construct two examples which elucidate the relationships between several σ-algebras that arise in measure-theoretic constructions on locally compact spaces and groups. For any space X let (X) be the Borelσ-algebra on X, i.e., the smallest σ-algebra of subsets of X which contains the family of all closed subsets of X. Let δ (X) be the smallest δ-ring of subsets of X which contains every compact subset of X, where by a δ-ring we mean a collection of subsets of X which is closed under the formation of countable intersections, finite unions and relative complements. Let σ(X) be the smallest σ-ring of subsets of X which contains all compact subsets of X, where by a σ-ring we mean a collection of subsets of X which is closed under the formation of countable unions, finite intersections and relative complements.

A nontrivial solution of (1)n is said to be oscillatory or nonoscillatory depending on whether it has infinitely many or finitely many zeros on [a, ∞). Let denote respectively the set of all solutions, oscillatory solutions, nonoscillatory solutions of (1)n. is an n-dimensional linear space. A subspace is said to be nonoscillatory or strongly oscillatory respectively if every nontrivial solution of is nonoscillatory or oscillatory. If contains both oscillatory and nonoscillatory solutions then is said to be weakly oscillatory.

In this paper we introduce a new class of mappings and apply it to study some local properties of continua. A solution is obtained to a problem raised in [14] by the first author (see 4.4 below). By a mapping we always mean a continuous function.

Evaluation subgroups of the homotopy groups have been objects of extensive study recently by Gottlieb, Haslam, Jerrold Siegel, G. E. Lang (Jr), etc. In [8] one of the authors has introduced the notions of ‘cyclic' and ‘cocyclic’ maps and studied generalizations of evaluation subgroups and their duals in the set up of Eckmann-Hilton duality. This paper continues the study of these generalized Gottlieb and dual Gottlieb subsets. All the spaces, except the function spaces, will be arc connected locally compact CW-complexes with base point at a vertex. For any X, Y the set of base point preserving homotopy classes of maps of X to Y is denoted by [X, Y].

In [14, §4], some theorems were obtained about generalized polynomial identities in rings with involution, but the statements had to be weakened somewhat because a structure theory of rings with involution had not yet been developed sufficiently to permit proofs to utilize enough properties of rings with involution. In this paper, such a theory is developed. The key concept is that of the central closure of a ring with involution, given in § 1, shown to have properties analogous to the central closure of a ring without involution. In § 2, the theory of primitive rings with involution, first set forth by Baxter-Martindale [5], is pushed forward, to enable a setting of generalized identities in rings with involution which can parallel the non-involutory situation.

We show that a map of rational spaces (see Definition 1) induces a map of homology sections at each stage, and that the k'-invariants are mapped naturally. This is used to characterize rational spaces in which all (matric) Massey products vanish as wedges of rational spheres, and yields the precise Eckmann-Hilton dual of a result of M. Dyer [7]. Berstein's result on co-H spaces [3] is also deduced. These results form a part of the author's doctoral dissertation at Cornell University written under Professor I. Berstein, to whom I express my sincere thanks for his patient help and encouragement. Extensions and counterexamples will appear in a future paper.

Quasi-injective and quasi-projective modules over hereditary noetherian prime rings ((hnp)-rings) were studied in [17]. In the present paper we give some applications of the results established in [17]. Kulikov, Kertesz, Prufer, Szele had made basic contributions to the problem of decomposability of abelian p-groups (Fuchs [4]). Kaplansky [9] studied analogous problems for modules over (commutative) Dedekind domains. Let R be an (hnp)-r'mg, which is not right primitive. Using the structure of an indecomposable infective torsion R-module, established in [17, Theorem 4], some of the basic concepts and results on the decomposability of a torsion abelian group are generalized in Section 2, to modules over R.

In this paper all rings R are associative rings with identity and all modules are members of R-mod, the category of unital left R-modules, unless the contrary is specifically stated.

We call an extension of commutative rings, R ⊂ T, open if the spec mapping from spec (T) to spec (R), which sends the prime Q of T to Q ∩ R, is an open mapping. It is easy to show, as for example in [1], that if R ⊂ T is open then it satisfies going down. In general, the converse is false, as is shown by Z ⊂ (2z) with Z the integers. To the best of this author's knowledge, it is an open question whether for an integral extension, going down and open are equivalent.

The graphs considered here are finite and have no loops or multiple edges. In particular, Km denotes the complete graph on m vertices. For any graph G,V(G) and E(G) denote, respectively, the vertex and edge sets of G. A forest is a graph which has no cycles and a tree is a connected forest. The reader is referred to [1] or [4] for the meaning of terms not defined in this paper.

Of recent years the author has been interested in developing a representation theory of the algebra of representations [5; 6] of a finite group G, and dually of its classes [7]. In this paper Frobenius’ Reciprocity Theorem provides a starting point for the introduction of the inverses R-1 and I-1 of the restricting and inducing operators R and I. The condition under which such inverse operations are available is that the classes of G do not splitin the subgroup Ĝ. When this condition is satisfied the application of these operations to inner products is of interest.

Then we shall show that the set of all n X n skew-symmetric matrices over a field of characteristic 0 satisfies the standard identity of degree at least 2n — 2; specifically, we shall prove the following.

One well-established characteristic of the operation of decreasing rearrangement is its variation reducing property. A systematic study of this property has been made in considerable detail by G.F.D. Duff in [5] and [6]. He proved some inequalities related to the operation of rearrangement in decreasing order showing that the total variation of a sequence or an absolutely continuous function is in general diminished by such rearrangement. He also showed that the Lp norm of the difference sequence (or the derivative function) is diminished by this rearrangement operation unless the given sequence (or absolutely continuous function) is already monotonie (or equal to a monotonie function almost everywhere).
