Abstract

The grain coarsening in a 50:50 volume percent Al2 O3 : c-ZrO2 composite is shown to be severely limited even after long heat treatments at high temperatures (100 hours at 1650°C). The strength behavior, measured by an indentation-strength-inbending (ISIB) method, shows a “rule-of-mixtures” type behavior. The microstructural stability at high temperatures yields reliability in the mechanical properties which has important implications with regard to fiber-reinforcement technology.
