* Professor Cornish writes that the original description of the Mohr diagram was given in Civilingenieur for 1882, p. 113. Most elementary books on Strength of Materials describe its use, which also extends to Soil Mechanics. At any point in an elastic medium, the stresses in a certain direction are represented by a point on the circumference of the circle; the point K common to both circles represents the direct stress normal to the discontinuity and the shear stress parallel to it.
