Gravity–capillary waves are waves influenced by both the effects of surface tension and gravity; these waves are at small scales with wavelength range from approximately 10 cm to less than 1 cm. Gravity–capillary waves play a significant role in air–sea interactions, and they exhibit much different features compared with gravity waves. They can be observed widely on the sea surface. Parasitic waves (capillary waves generated by and that ride on gravity and/or gravity–capillary waves) and micro-breaking can be observed on the water surface with winds; however, the presence of wind makes it difficult to analyse the mechanisms of the wave itself. In this paper, parasitic waves and micro-breaking on gravity–capillary waves are examined experimentally, both in the absence of wind. Parasitic waves and axisymmetric micro-breaking waves are generated mechanically in a convergent channel, where energy density increases due to spatial convergence. Three experimental techniques are used to measure wave properties: planar laser-induced fluorescence, particle image velocimetry and shadowgraphs. The wave profile evolution and vortices beneath the parasitic waves are studied. The micro-breaking of gravity–capillary waves is observed on a surface with added surfactant. The surfactant increases the Bond number, and makes breaking possible in these small-scale waves. Energy dissipation of parasitic waves and micro-breaking is quantified, and the enhanced dissipation caused by parasitic waves is identified through the experiments. In this study, mechanically generated breaking waves with wavelengths less than 10 cm are studied for the first time, without the effect of wind. The results yield insight into wave characteristics and energy dissipation on the air–sea interface at small scales.

This study aims to understand the epidemiological characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 infection in the paediatric population during the outbreak of the Omicron variant in Shanghai. We retrospectively analysed the population-based epidemiological characteristics and clinical outcome of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant infection in children in Minhang District, Shanghai, based on the citywide surveillance system during the outbreak period in 2022 (March to May). During this time, a total of 63,969 cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection were notified in Minhang District, out of which 4,652 (7.3%) were children and adolescents <18 years. The incidence rate of SARS-CoV-2 infections in children was 153 per 10,000. Of all paediatric cases, 50% reported to be clinically symptomatic within 1–3 days after PCR confirmation by parents or themselves, with 36.3% and 18.9% of paediatric cases reporting fever and cough. Also, 58.4% of paediatric cases had received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and 52.1% had received two doses of the COVID-19 vaccination. Our findings are informative for the implementation of appropriate measures to protect children from the threat of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

According to the public data collected from the Health Commission of Gansu Province, China, regarding the COVID-19 pandemic during the summer epidemic cycle in 2022, the epidemiological analysis showed that the pandemic spread stability and the symptom rate (the number of confirmed cases divided by the sum of the number of asymptomatic cases and the number of confirmed cases) of COVID-19 were different among 3 main epidemic regions, Lanzhou, Linxia, and Gannan; both the symptom rate and the daily instantaneous symptom rate (daily number of confirmed cases divided by the sum of daily number of asymptomatic cases and daily number of confirmed cases) in Lanzhou were substantially higher than those in Linxia and Gannan. The difference in the food sources due to the high difference of the population ethnic composition in the 3 regions was probably the main driver for the difference of the symptom rates among the 3 regions. This work provides potential values for prevention and control of COVID-19 in different regions.

For the omnivorous Cherax quadricarinatus crayfish, plant raw materials can be good alternatives to dietary fish meal (FM). A 56-d feeding trial was conducted in C. quadricarinatus (11·70 (se 0·13) g). Diet with 100 % FM as the protein source was the control. Seven experimental diets were formulated by replacing 75 or 100 % of FM with soyabean meal (SM75, SM100) or cottonseed meal (CM75 and CM100), and a mixture of SM and CM (protein content is 1:1) replacing 50, 75 or 100 % of FM (SC50, SC75 and SC100). Crayfish fed the CM100 and SC100 showed significantly lower weight gain (WG), specific growth rate, trypsin and pepsin activities compared with the control diet. Crayfish in CM100 group showed significantly higher GPx, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase activities and malondialdehyde content than the control. SM100 and CM100 diets can cause slight separation of the peritrophic membrane from the intestinal folds. The pepsin activity of crayfish in SC50 was significantly higher than those in other experimental diets. The highest WG and muscle arginine content were also found in crayfish fed SC50. The relative abundance of Proteobacteria, Unclassified Enterobacteriaceae and Candidatus Bacilloplasma was significantly higher, but Actinobacteriota was significantly lower in SM100, CM100 and SC100 than in control. Microbiota functional prediction indicated that the relative abundance of ‘cell motility’ pathway in crayfish fed CM100 was significantly decreased compared with the control. In conclusion, only half of the FM can be effectively substituted with a mixture of SM and CM (protein content is 1:1) for C. quadricarinatus.

Lower-crust-derived adakitic rocks in the Gangdese belt provide important constraints on the timing of Tibetan crustal thickening and on the relative contributions of magmatic and tectonic processes. Here we present geochronological and geochemical data for the Wangdui porphyritic monzogranites in the western Gangdese belt. Zircon U–Pb dating yields emplacement ages of 46–44 Ma. All samples have high Sr (321–599 ppm), low Yb (0.76–1.33 ppm) and Y (10.6–18.3 ppm) contents, with high La/Yb (51.1–72.3) and Sr/Y (21.0–51.4) ratios, indicating adakitic affinities. The low MgO (0.97–1.76 wt %), Cr (7.49–53.6 ppm) and Ni (4.75–29.1 ppm) contents, as well as high 87Sr/86Sr(i) (0.7143–0.7145), low ϵNd(t) (−10.4 to −9.8) and zircon ϵHf(t) (−17.7 to 0.4) values, suggest that the Wangdui pluton most likely originated from partial melting of the thickened ancient lower crust. In combination with previously published data, despite the east–west-trending heterogeneity of crustal composition in the Gangdese belt, the La/Yb ratios of magmatic rocks reveal that both western and eastern segments experienced remarkable crustal thickening in the Eocene. However, in contrast to the thickened juvenile lower crust in the eastern segment formed by the underplating of mantle-derived magmas, tectonic shortening plays a more crucial role in thickening of the ancient basement in western Gangdese. In fact, such Eocene-thickened ancient lower-crust-derived adakitic rocks are widely distributed in the central Himalayan–Tibetan orogen. This, together with the extensive development of fold–thrust belts, suggests that tectonic shortening might be the main mechanism accounting for the crustal thickening associated with the India–Asia collision.

Fine fibre immersed in different flows is ubiquitous. For a fibre in shear flows, most motion modes appear in the flow-gradient plane. Here the two-dimensional behaviours of an individual flexible flap in channel flows are studied. The nonlinear coupling of the fluid inertia ($\textit {Re}$), flexibility of the flap ($K$) and channel width ($W$) is discovered. Inside a wide channel (e.g. $W=4$), as $K$ decreases, the flap adopts rigid motion, springy motion, snake turn and complex mode in sequence. It is found that the fluid inertia tends to straighten the flap. Moreover, $\textit {Re}$ significantly affects the lateral equilibrium location $y_{eq}$, therefore affecting the local shear rate and the tumbling period $T$. For a rigid flap in a wide channel, when $\textit {Re}$ exceeds a threshold, the flap stays inclined instead of tumbling. As $\textit {Re}$ further increases, the flap adopts swinging mode. In addition, there is a scaling law between $T$ and $\textit {Re}$. For the effect of $K$, through the analysis of the torque generated by surrounding fluid, we found that a smaller $K$ slows down the tumbling of the flap even if $y_{eq}$ is comparable. As $W$ decreases, the wall confinement effect makes the flap easier to deform and closer to the centreline. The tumbling period would increase and the swinging mode would be more common. When $W$ further decreases, the flaps are constrained to stay inclined, parabolic-like or one-end bending configurations moving along with the flow. Our study may shed some light on the behaviours of a free fibre in flows.

Reconstructing the history of elite communication in ancient China benefits from additional archaeological evidence. We combine textual analysis with new human stable carbon and nitrogen isotope data from two Chu burials in the Jingzhou area to reveal significant dietary differences among Chu nobles of the middle Warring States period (c. 350 BC). This research provides important new information on the close interaction between the aristocratic families of the Qin and Chu.

This paper first uses a decoupling modeling method to model legged robots. The method groups all the degrees of freedom according to the number of limbs, regarding each limb as a manipulator with serial structure, which greatly reduces the number of dynamic parameters that need to be identified simultaneously. On this basis, a step-by-step identification method from the end-effector link to the base link, referred to as “E-B” identification method, is proposed. Simulation verification is carried out on a quadruped robot with 16 degrees of freedom in Gazebo, and the validity of the method proposed is discussed.

Cross-waves are standing waves with crests perpendicular to a wave-maker; they are subharmonic waves excited by parametric instability. The modulational and chaotic behaviours of nonlinear cross-waves have been studied widely since the 1970s. Most of the previous work has focused on gravity waves where surface tension can be neglected. In this work we study cross-waves that are highly dependent on surface tension as well as gravity. By oscillating a planar wave-maker either vertically or horizontally with frequencies of 25 Hz through 40 Hz at one end of a rectangular basin, two-dimensional multi-component surface patterns are realized. Using the free-surface synthetic Schlieren technique to measure the surface elevations, multi-dimensional Fourier transforms are utilized to track the evolutionary spectrum of the water surface in both the temporal and spatial domains. Wavelet transforms are implemented to show the development of the various frequency components. Three-wave resonances with and without first subharmonics are observed for small nonlinearity. Three-dimensional oblique propagating cross-waves are generated at higher nonlinearity; unlike most previous cross-wave experiments, this staggered pattern propagates far downstream. Experimental evidence shows that two oblique propagating waves form a two-dimensional short-crested pattern, and that the lateral component of the waves develops into parametric sloshing modes corresponding to the width of the tank. Two regimes of nonlinear wave patterns, resonant triads and oblique propagating cross-waves, are delineated.

A new enantiornithine bird is described on the basis of a well preserved partial skeleton from the Upper Cretaceous Qiupa Formation of Henan Province (central China). It provides new evidence about the osteology of Late Cretaceous enantiornithines, which are mainly known from isolated bones; in contrast, Early Cretaceous forms are often represented by complete skeletons. While the postcranial skeleton shows the usual distinctive characters of enantiornithines, the skull displays several features, including confluence of the antorbital fenestra and the orbit and loss of the postorbital, evolved convergently with modern birds. Although some enantiornithines retained primitive cranial morphologies into the latest Cretaceous Period, at least one lineage evolved cranial modifications that parallel those in modern birds.

No relevant studies have yet been conducted to explore which measurement can best predict the survival time of patients with cancer cachexia. This study aimed to identify an anthropometric measurement that could predict the 1-year survival of patients with cancer cachexia. We conducted a nested case–control study using data from a multicentre clinical investigation of cancer from 2013 to 2020. Cachexia was defined using the Fearon criteria. A total of 262 patients who survived less than 1 year and 262 patients who survived more than 1 year were included in this study. Six candidate variables were selected based on clinical experience and previous studies. Five variables, BMI, mid-arm circumference, mid-arm muscle circumference, calf circumference and triceps skin fold (TSF), were selected for inclusion in the multivariable model. In the conditional logistic regression analysis, TSF (P = 0·014) was identified as a significant independent protective factor. A similar result was observed in all patients with cancer cachexia (n 3084). In addition, a significantly stronger positive association between TSF and the 1-year survival of patients with cancer cachexia was observed in participants aged > 65 years (OR: 0·94; 95 % CI 0·89, 0·99) than in those aged ≤ 65 years (OR: 0·96; 95 % CI 0·93, 0·99; Pinteraction = 0·013) and in participants with no chronic disease (OR: 0·92; 95 % CI 0·87, 0·97) than in those with chronic disease (OR: 0·97; 95 % CI 0·94, 1·00; Pinteraction = 0·049). According to this study, TSF might be a good anthropometric measurement for predicting 1-year survival in patients with cancer cachexia.

The present study evaluated whether fat mass assessment using the triceps skinfold (TSF) thickness provides additional prognostic value to the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) framework in patients with lung cancer (LC). We performed an observational cohort study including 2672 LC patients in China. Comprehensive demographic, disease and nutritional characteristics were collected. Malnutrition was retrospectively defined using the GLIM criteria, and optimal stratification was used to determine the best thresholds for the TSF. The associations of malnutrition and TSF categories with survival were estimated independently and jointly by calculating multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (HR). Malnutrition was identified in 808 (30·2 %) patients, and the best TSF thresholds were 9·5 mm in men and 12 mm in women. Accordingly, 496 (18·6 %) patients were identified as having a low TSF. Patients with concurrent malnutrition and a low TSF had a 54 % (HR = 1·54, 95 % CI = 1·25, 1·88) greater death hazard compared with well-nourished individuals, which was also greater compared with malnourished patients with a normal TSF (HR = 1·23, 95 % CI = 1·06, 1·43) or malnourished patients without TSF assessment (HR = 1·31, 95 % CI = 1·14, 1·50). These associations were concentrated among those patients with adequate muscle mass (as indicated by the calf circumference). Additional fat mass assessment using the TSF enhances the prognostic value of the GLIM criteria. Using the population-derived thresholds for the TSF may provide significant prognostic value when used in combination with the GLIM criteria to guide strategies to optimise the long-term outcomes in patients with LC.

There is a paucity of evidence about the prevalence and risk factors for symptomatic infection among children. This study aimed to describe the prevalence of symptomatic coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and its risk factors in children and adolescents aged 0–18 years in Qatar. We conducted a cross-sectional study of all children aged 0–18 years diagnosed with COVID-19 using polymerase chain reaction in Qatar during the period 1st March to 31st July 2020. A generalised linear model with a binomial family and identity link was used to assess the association between selected factors and the prevalence of symptomatic infection. A total of 11 445 children with a median age of 8 years (interquartile range (IQR) 3–13 years) were included in this study. The prevalence of symptomatic COVID-19 was 36.6% (95% confidence interval (CI) 35.7–37.5), and it was similar between children aged <5 years (37.8%), 5–9 years (34.3%) and 10 + years (37.3%). The most frequently reported symptoms among the symptomatic group were fever (73.5%), cough (34.8%), headache (23.2%) and sore throat (23.2%). Fever (82.8%) was more common in symptomatic children aged <5 years, while cough (38.7%) was more prevalent in those aged 10 years or older, compared to other age groups. Variables associated with an increased risk of symptomatic infection were; contact with confirmed cases (RD 0.21; 95% CI 0.20–0.23; P = 0.001), having visited a health care facility (RD 0.54; 95% CI 0.45–0.62; P = 0.001), and children aged under 5 years (RD 0.05; 95% CI 0.02–0.07; P = 0.001) or aged 10 years or older (RD 0.04; 95% CI 0.02–0.06; P = 0.001). A third of the children with COVID-19 were symptomatic with a higher proportion of fever in very young children and a higher proportion of cough in those between 10 and 18 years of age.

As threats to biodiversity proliferate, establishment and expansion of protected areas have increasingly been advocated in recent decades. In establishing a network of protected areas, recurrent assessments of the biodiversity conservation actually afforded by these areas is required. Gap analysis has been useful to evaluate the sufficiency and performance of protected areas. We surveyed Reeves’s Pheasant Syrmaticus reevesii populations in 2018–2019 across its distribution range in central China to quantify the distribution of habitat suitable for this species. Our goal was to ascertain the current distribution of Reeves’s Pheasant and then identify the gaps in protecting Reeves’s Pheasant of the existing national nature reserve (NNR) network to provide suggestions for improving the conservation of this important species. The existing NNR network encompassed only 17.0% of the habitat suitable for Reeves’s Pheasant. Based on the current distributions of both suitable habitat and NNRs for Reeves’s Pheasant, we suggest most currently unprotected areas comprised moderately suitable habitat for species and should be prioritized in the future. A multiple species approach using Reeves’s Pheasant as a flagship species should be considered to understand the extent of mismatch between the distributions of protected areas and suitable habitat to improve the management effectiveness of NNRs. This case study provides an example of how the development of a conservation reserve network may be based on species distribution and habitat assessments and is useful to conservation efforts in other regions and for other species.

Myrmekites occurring in monzodiorite from the Meichuan pluton in the Dabie ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic belt were investigated. The petrographic evidence demonstrates a metasomatic origin for myrmekite formation at the scale of individual alkali feldspar grains, and that the myrmekitic quartz and plagioclase matrix are generated simultaneously replacing precursor feldspar. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and electron microprobe analysis indicate a low anorthite content in the narrow rim of host plagioclase near the myrmekite–alkali-feldspar interface. The Ca2+, Na+ proportion of hydrothermal fluids replacing precursor alkali feldspar is 1:5.4, calculated from the anorthite content of the inner part of the host plagioclase and the neighbouring alkali feldspar. Electron back-scattered diffraction was used to identify the crystallographic orientation of the myrmekitic quartz, plagioclase matrix and the precursor alkali feldspar. The crystallographic orientation relationships (110)Kfs//(11$\bar{2}\bar{1}$)Qtz, (20$\bar{1}$)Kfs//(11$\bar{2}$1)Qtz and [11$\bar{2}3]$Qtz//[001]Kfs between myrmekitic quartz and adjacent alkali feldspar were obtained from statistical analysis. No clear crystallographic orientation relationship between quartz and plagioclase was found. The growth of myrmekitic quartz is constrained by the precursor alkali feldspar rather than the simultaneously crystallised plagioclase. This research is helpful for understanding the intergrowth mechanism during metasomatism.

As far as plastron is sustained, superhydrophobic (SHPo) surfaces are expected to reduce skin-friction drag in any flow conditions including large-scale turbulent boundary-layer flows of marine vessels. However, despite many successful drag reductions reported using laboratory facilities, the plastron on SHPo surfaces was persistently lost in high-Reynolds-number flows on open water, and no reduction has been reported until a recent study using certain microtrench SHPo surfaces underneath a boat (Xu et al., Phys. Rev. Appl., vol. 13, no. 3, 2020, 034056). Since scientific studies with controlled flows are difficult with a boat on ocean water, in this paper we test similar SHPo surfaces in a high-speed towing tank, which provides well-controlled open-water flows, by developing a novel $0.7\ \textrm {m} \times 1.4\ \textrm {m}$ towing plate, which subjects a $4\ \textrm {cm} \times 7\ \textrm {cm}$ sample to the high-Reynolds-number flows of the plate. In addition to the 7 cm long microtrenches, trenches divided into two in length are also tested and reveal an improvement. The skin-friction drag ratio relative to a smooth surface is found to be decreasing with increasing Reynolds number, down to 73 % (i.e. 27 % drag reduction) at $Re_x\sim 8\times 10^6$, before starting to increase at higher speeds. For a given gas fraction, the trench width non-dimensionalized to the viscous length scale is found to govern the drag reduction, in agreement with previous numerical results.

In a back pressured duct with incident shocks, the shock train exhibits violent oscillations or even a rapid movement when it passes through a shock-wave–boundary-layer interaction (SWBLI) region. In this study, the dynamics of a shock train system was investigated. Linear stability analysis was used to identify the underlying cause of the unstable behaviour. Results from the eigenvalue analysis indicated that as the shock train enters the SWBLI region, the divergent vibration, which is the outcome of a Hopf bifurcation, emerges. An analysis based on the feedback mechanism identified a criterion for this instability, i.e. the sign of the gradient of the maximal pressure that the boundary layer can sustain. Different unstable motions were also investigated according to the condition of the non-existence of a limit cycle. These motions were associated with the speed of the shock train and the configurations of the flow parameter gradients. It was shown in the controllability matrix that the rapid movement is uncontrollable, which indicates that there is a low correlation between the shock train motion and the flap actuator in the SWBLI region. However, for the remaining part of the unstable motion, a fast-response actuator is required. According to the observability analysis, the shock train movement contributes more to the variation in the pressure behind the first separation shock than the backpressure further downstream, which confirms that monitoring the pressure change along the tunnel is a better method for shock train detection rather than a polynomial model using the backpressure.

Hubei province in China has had the most confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases and has reported sustained transmission of the disease. Although Lu'an city is adjacent to Hubei province, its community transmission was blocked at the early stage, and the impact of the epidemic was limited. Therefore, we summarised the overall characteristics of the entire epidemic course in Lu'an to help cities with a few imported cases better contain the epidemic. A total of 69 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 11 asymptomatic carriers were identified in Lu'an during the epidemic from 12 January to 21 February 2020. Fifty-two (65.0%) cases were male, and the median age was 40 years. On admission, 56.5% of cases had a fever as the initial symptom, and pneumonia was present in 89.9% of cases. The mean serial interval and the mean duration of hospitalisation were 6.5 days (95% CI: 4.8–8.2) and 18.2 days (95% CI: 16.8–19.5), respectively. A total of 16 clusters involving 60 cases (17 first-generation cases and 43 secondary cases) were reported during the epidemic. We observed that only 18.9% (7/37) index cases resulted in community transmission during the epidemic in Lu'an, indicating that the scale of the epidemic was limited to a low level in Lu'an city. An asymptomatic carrier caused the largest cluster, involving 13 cases. Spread of COVID-19 by asymptomatic carriers represents an enormous challenge for countries responding to the pandemic.
