Simple internal multiband monopole antenna with low specific absorption rate (SAR) for most wireless communication applications is presented in this paper. The proposed antenna is an unequal arms monopole antenna with a meander stripoin the other substrate side. The antenna has a simple structure and it is sufficiently small in size to be easily fitted on the housing of a mobile phone or a universal serial bus (USB) dongle with size 20 × 50 × 0.8 mm3. The antenna is designed to operate in different bands to cover most of allocated wireless communication bands in the frequency range from 0.9 to 6 GHz. The proposed antenna has an acceptable average gain of about 2.75 dBi and an average efficiency of about 85% while providing a monopole radiation pattern in both horizontal and elevation planes, with average half-power beam width of 65° in the elevation plane. The simulation and the experimental results of the antenna are in agreement. The SAR in the human head is investigated by using CST 2012 Microwave Studio Hugo Voxel Model.

In this paper, a novel compact microstrip lowpass filter (LPF) using diamond-shaped resonator with wide rejection and sharp transition band is presented. The proposed filter has −3 dB cut off frequency at 2.6 GHz. The maximum insertion loss is only 0.1 dB in the passband and the rejection band extends from 2.89 to 20.84 GHz with the attenuation level better than −21 dB. The transition band is only 0.288 GHz, from 2.606 to 2.894 GHz with corresponding attenuation levels of −3 and −20 dB, respectively. The filter size is 12.4 × 11.5 mm2. The proposed filter is fabricated and tested, where the measurement results are in good agreement with the simulation results. The proposed LPF has compact size, simple structure, wide rejection band, and low insertion loss, where all of these characteristics are essential for LPF in the modern communication circuits.

In this work, a novel method for the mode content extrapolation in multimode waveguides with focus on the characterization of mode converters is presented. The proposed method is based on the direct determination of the correlation coefficients between the structural functions of all possible propagating modes and the complex measured near-field pattern. To implement the method, standard near-field equipment is simply required. Test simulations and measurements from 4 to 8 GHz on a 6-in. circular pipe for radar level monitoring are reported in the last section and demonstrate that the proposed technique provides accurate information about the mode content of the structure under test.

Cognitive radio (CR) has generated a lot of interest because of the promise of wide instantaneous bandwidths which will improve data rates. Current social trends suggest that CR nodes will ultimately be mobile and handheld. This produces a need for small wideband antennas. The Chu limit imposes a restriction on what is obtainable with passive matching. In this paper, it is shown how a negative impedance converter (NIC) can be used to broadband match a chassis antenna beyond what is obtainable with passive matching. It is also shown how to predict and overcome the instabilities which have limited the top frequency achievable with NICs. The noise and linearity performance of the NIC matched antenna is also shown.

Digital predistortion (DPD) of a nonlinear power amplifier (PA) is made challenging when the observation bandwidth (OBW) used to measure the output signal is narrower than the intermodulation distortion (IMD) spectrum generated. Wide bandwidth input signals stimulate memory effects within the PA thereby requiring the model order of the DPD to be expanded to include memory correction coefficients. However, if the model order is over-specified relative to the OBW, the estimation of the DPD coefficients will be ill-conditioned and the distortion cancellation will be degraded. This paper proposes a method of selecting the best model order of the DPD coefficient estimation for the available OBW. Adjacent channel power ratio (ACPR) is used as an independent measure of the distortion cancellation for a given model order. Experimental results demonstrate the relationship between the model order of the estimation, the OBW, and the ACPR performance of the wide bandwidth IMD cancellation.

This paper presents a comprehensive study on the design of a 30 GHz, circularly polarized (CP), single horn-fed, metallic electromagnetic band gap (EBG) antenna. Three different approaches have been studied in order to create a 20 dBi antenna with an axial ratio (AR) lower than 1 dB over a 500 MHz bandwidth. Based on theoretical and experimental results, a conclusion is given on the best solution to obtain the desired characteristics. Perspectives and guidelines are also given for the design of multi-feed EBG antenna as a reflector focal feed for Ka-Band Space Applications.

Detailed analysis of the polarization tracking modules for Ku band active phased array antennas is presented. The proposed transmitter (14.0–14.5 GHz) and receiver (12.25–12.75 GHz) modules are based on the low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) technique, containing orthogonal dual channels with different phases controlled by phase shifters. The effect of amplitude and phase inconsistency between two channels on polarization tracking performance is analyzed. The validity of the analysis is verified by the measurements of the manufactured prototypes. The measured patterns of the active phased array antenna are given to illustrate the effects of the modules on polarization agility, which may be used for Ku band satellite antennas on mobile terminals.

Radar sensors are used widely in modern driver assistance systems. Available sensors nowadays often operate in the 77 GHz band and can accurately provide distance, velocity, and angle information about remote objects. Increasing the operation frequency allows improving the angular resolution and accuracy. In this paper, the technical feasibility to move the operation frequency beyond 100 GHz is discussed, by investigating dielectric properties of radome materials, the attenuation of rain and atmosphere, radar cross-section behavior, active circuits technology, and frequency regulation issues. Moreover, a miniaturized antenna at 150 GHz is presented to demonstrate the possibilities of high-resolution radar for cars.

Time-domain characterization of a microstrip patch antenna with circular corner truncation to achieve polarization reconfigurability is presented. By applying zero bias, forward bias, and reverse bias to the four PIN diodes, the antenna can radiate with linear polarization (LP), right hand circular polarization (RHCP), and left hand circular polarization (LHCP). The circular cuts reduce centre-frequency shift from linear to circularly polarized states, compared with conventional straight cuts. Time-domain simulation and measurement are carried out to show the switching characteristics of the proposed antenna, and it is established that satisfactory switching speed can be obtained using a simple low-cost driver circuit.

In many base-station applications, the load/usage fluctuates over time periods of hours to days, thereby varying the required transmit power by as much as 10 dB. It is desirable to maintain high efficiency and linearity in the power amplifier under these back-off conditions in order to achieve high long-term efficiency. This paper demonstrates a scalable digital predistortion (DPD) approach that can be applied under different power back-off levels in envelope-tracking (ET) amplifiers and quantifies the associated efficiency. Efficiency comparisons are made with other amplifier configurations such as Class B and Doherty. Efficiency of 60% at full power (35 W average power) and >30% efficiency at 10 dB average power back-off are measured in an ET amplifier with a 7.54 dB peak-to-average ratio (PAPR) single-carrier WCDMA signal while meeting linearity specifications. Long-term base-station usage probability functions are presented. The long-term efficiency of the ET amplifiers is simulated to be greater than that of Class B and Doherty amplifiers.

This paper reports on the design of a new power cell dedicated to Ku-band power amplifier (PA) applications. This cell called “integrated cascode” has been designed in order to propose a strong decrease in terms of circuit size for PA. The technology used relies on 0.25-μm GaAs pseudomorphic high electron mobility transistors (PHEMT) of United Monolithic Semiconductors (UMS) foundry. A distributed approach is proposed in order to model this power cell. The challenge consists of obtaining, with a better shape factor (ratio between the vertical and horizontal sizes of the transistor), the same performances than a single transistor with the same gate width. In order to design a 2W amplifier, we have used two 12 × 100 μm transistors. Cascode vertical size is 413 μm whereas a transistor with the same gate width exhibits a vertical size of 790 μm. Therefore, the shape factor is nearly one as compared to a shape factor of 4 for a classical parallel architecture. This new device allows us to decrease the Monolithic microwave integrated circuit amplifier area of 40% compared to amplifier based on single transistors.

A stepped-impedance configuration for coaxial resonators is employed to realize filters in the L-, S-, and C-bands exhibiting a wide spurious-free range. The geometry of a single rod resonator is optimized, by enlarging its top head, in order to maximize the ratio between the frequency of the first higher-order mode and that of the fundamental mode. This leads to the design of a very compact filter with high Q-factors and wide spurious-free bands, up to nearly 5 times the center frequency. To prove the effectiveness of the approach, a sixth-order filter has been designed and manufactured; the comparison between the full-wave simulations and the measurement show excellent agreement.

We studied the viability of the embedded wafer level ball grid array (eWLB) package environment as an antenna platform for 77 GHz automotive radar sensors and the effects of package fabrication tolerances on the antenna performance. The investigation of different antenna concepts in the eWLB package and their characterization methods are addressed. The design procedures for electrically large, differentially fed loop antennas in a multilayer package structure are introduced. Two different planar antennas are developed and measured in an eWLB package showing promising results such as a gain of 9 GHz and an impedance bandwidth of 8 GHz. An acceptable antenna performance is recorded within the tolerance limits. Therefore, the eWLB package is seen as an appropriate platform for mm-wave antennas and as a good candidate for an antenna-in-package (AiP) concept.

A waveguide shunt slot-fed microstrip patch antenna (WGMPA) element is proposed and analyzed with method of moments (MOM) using entire-domain basis functions. The developed analysis has been utilized to obtain parametric observation of power-coupling versus transverse offset of feeding slot from the waveguide axis. Expressions for the radiation pattern as a summation of contributions of individual basis functions are reported. The proposed element is amenable to building-up series-fed linear arrays by a simple cascading of elements at the through-end of the feeding waveguide. The authors propose that arbitrary amplitude excitations may be applied to such linear arrays for desired tailored array pattern characteristics. The required transverse offsets for each array element may be computed using the reported parametric result. As a demonstration of concept, two distributions are designed – uniform amplitudes and Dolph–Chebyshev for reduced side lobes. Computed element patterns from MOM are used with an array factor formulation for arbitrary element positions. Both modules show radiation characteristics closely matching the expected directivity and sidelobe envelopes. Analysis validation is achieved using a proven finite element method (FEM)-based solver; the comparison is close and is reported. Efficacy of the waveguide shunt-slot fed patch element for building linear array modules with prescribed amplitude distributions is thus established.

A polar transmitter driven by digital input signals for envelope and phase is demonstrated, using a band-switching output resonator to achieve multiband operation. A new digital pulse width modulation algorithm is also shown to partially suppress spurious signals associated with the digital input envelope signal. The transmitter consists of a current-mode class-D (CMCD) CMOS power amplifier (PA), together with a buck converter with a dead-time generator for improved efficiency. The CMCD PA is tuned by band-switching capacitors that can handle up to 9 V, and is measured to have approximately 30 dBm output power with 31–35% drain efficiency under single-tone testing. The proposed spurious signal reduction technique works to partially suppress quantization noise without increasing power consumption. Overall efficiencies of 27.1/25.6% are obtained at 30.2/28.9 dBm continuous wave (CW) output powers and 0.85/1.75 GHz carrier frequencies, respectively. Spur suppression of 9–10 dB peak is achieved when the proposed algorithm is applied with wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) modulation.

With the ever-increasing need for wireless communication and the emergence of many systems, it is important to design broadband antennas to cover a wide frequency range. The aim of this paper is to design a broadband patch antenna, employing the three techniques of slotting, adding directly coupled parasitic elements and fractal electromagnetic band gap (EBG) structures.The bandwidth is improved from 9.3 to 23.7%. A wideband ranging from 4.15 to 5.27 GHz is obtained. Also, a comparative analysis of embedding EBG structures at different heights is also done. The composite effect of integrating these techniques in the design provides a simple and efficient method for obtaining low-profile, broadband, and high-gain antenna. By the addition of parasitic elements the bandwidth was increased to 18%. Later on by embedding EBG structures the bandwidth was increased up to 23.7%. The design is suitable for a variety of wireless applications like WLAN and radar applications.

In this paper, for the first time, we present a novel Pi-shaped structure using resonators for multiband applications. The multiband Pi-shaped structure with LC resonators is analyzed. In order to demonstrate the proposed multiband Pi-shaped structure, one tri-band Wilkinson power divider and one tri-band rat-race coupler are designed, fabricated, and tested. The compactness of the two demonstrated components is well kept by putting all stubs with resonators inside the components themselves. Measured results are in good agreement with the simulated results.

This paper presents a low-power and low-noise amplifier (LNA) with resistive-feedback configuration. The design consists of two resistive-feedback amplifiers. In order to reduce the chip area, a resistive-feedback inverter is adopted for input matching. The output stage adopts basic topology of an RC feedback for output matching, and adds two inductors for inductive peaking at the high band. The implemented LNA has a peak gain of 10.5 dB, the input reflection coefficient S11 is lower than −8 dB and the output reflection S22 is lower than −10.8 dB, and noise figure of 4.2–5.2 dB is between 1 and 10 GHz while consuming 12.65 mW from a 1.5 V supply. The chip area is only 0.69 mm2 and the figure of merit is 6.64 including the area estimation. The circuit was fabricated in a TSMC 0.18 um CMOS process.

This paper describes a digital signal processing (DSP) method for achieving “ideal” amplification, maximizing both the average output signal power and power-added-efficiency for any signal waveform and any power amplifier (PA) transfer characteristic. Detailed algorithms are described for optimally accomplishing peak reduction (PR), predistortion (PD) linearization, and integration of these DSP techniques with envelope tracking PAs. Hardware characterization results validate the theories of PD and PR operation.

This paper presents a new approach for improving the localization of passive ultra high frequency radio frequency identification (RFID) tags in line-of-sight channels using a received signal strength indicator (RSSI) technique. In practice, the complex propagation in the indoor channels and also the variability of some parameters of the RFID equipment itself introduces significant amount of errors when the operation of localization carries out the RSSI technique. Indeed, as the calculation is based on a trilateration, the incomplete knowledge of the propagation and some parameters of RFID tags leads to estimate distances which are wrong, and therefore the localization cannot be correct. In order to overcome this drawback, the proposed method takes into account the presence of unknown parameters relying on a dichotomous algorithm which includes probabilistic parameters. The presented simulation results are in good agreement with the expected theoretical results. Experimental results show that the proposed method strongly increases the accuracy of the estimated position of tags. Compared to other approaches based on the improvement of the RSSI technique, this method does not require too much complexity in terms of materials (no need for specific architecture or reference tags) and processing (fast and simple algorithm).
