We study identities for the distribution of the number of edges at time t back (i.e. measured backwards) in a coalescent tree whose subtrees have no mutations. This distribution is important in the infinitely-many-alleles model of mutation, where every mutation is unique. The model includes, as a special case, the number of edges in a coalescent tree at time t back when mutation is ignored. The identities take the form of expected values of functions of Zt=eiXt, where Xt is distributed as standard Brownian motion. Associated identities are also found for the distributions of the time to the most recent common ancestor, the time until loss of ancestral lines by coalescence or mutation, and the age of a mutation. Hypergeometric functions play an important role in the identities. The identities are of mathematical interest, as well as potentially being formulae to use for numerical integration or simulation to compute distributions that are usually expressed as alternating-sign series expansions, which are difficult to compute.

In this paper, we adapt the very effective Berry-Esseen theorems of Chen and Shao (2004), which apply to sums of locally dependent random variables, for use with randomly indexed sums. Our particular interest is in random variables resulting from integrating a random field with respect to a point process. We illustrate the use of our theorems in three examples: in a rather general model of the insurance collective; in problems in geometrical probability involving stabilizing functionals; and in counting the maximal points in a two-dimensional region.

We analyse SIS epidemics among populations partitioned into households. The analysis considers both the stochastic and deterministic models and, unlike in previous analyses, we consider general infectious period distributions. For the deterministic model, we prove the existence of an endemic equilibrium for the epidemic if and only if the threshold parameter, R*, is greater than 1. Furthermore, by utilising Markov chains we show that the total number of infectives converges to the endemic equilibrium as t → ∞. For the stochastic model, we prove a law of large numbers result for the convergence, to the deterministic limit, of the mean number of infectives per household. This is followed by the derivation of a Gaussian limit process for the fluctuations of the stochastic model.

This paper concerns two families of Markov decision problem that fall within the family of (bi-directional) restless bandits, an intractable class of decision processes introduced by Whittle. The spinning plates problem concerns the optimal management of a portfolio of reward-generating assets whose yields grow with investment but otherwise tend to decline. In the model of asset exploitation called the squad system, the yield from an asset tends to decline when it is used but will recover when the asset is at rest. In all cases, simply stated conditions are given that guarantee indexability of the problem, together with conditions necessary and sufficient for its strict indexability. The index heuristics for asset activation that emerge from the analysis are assessed numerically and found to perform very strongly.

We present a new iterative procedure for solving the multiple stopping problem in discrete time and discuss the stability of the algorithm. The algorithm produces monotonically increasing approximations of the Snell envelope which coincide with the Snell envelope after finitely many steps. Unlike backward dynamic programming, the algorithm allows us to calculate approximative solutions with only a few nestings of conditional expectations and is, therefore, tailor-made for a plain Monte Carlo implementation.

In this paper we develop methods for reducing the study, the computation, and the construction of stochastic functionals to those of standard concepts such as the moments of the pertinent random variables. Principally, our methods are based on the notion of ladder height densities and their Laguerre expansions, and our results provide a unifying framework for the distinct approaches of Dufresne (2000) and Schröder (2005).

In DNA sequences, specific words may take on biological functions as marker or signalling sequences. These may often be identified by frequent-word analyses as being particularly abundant. Accurate statistics is needed to assess the statistical significance of these word frequencies. The set of shuffled sequences - letter sequences having the same k-word composition, for some choice of k, as the sequence being analysed - is considered the most appropriate sample space for analysing word counts. However, little is known about these word counts. Here we present exact formulae for word counts in shuffled sequences.

Gaussian wave models have been successfully used since the early 1950s to describe the development of random sea waves, particularly as input to dynamic simulation of the safety of ships and offshore structures. A drawback of the Gaussian model is that it produces stochastically symmetric waves, which is an unrealistic feature and can lead to unconservative safety estimates. The Gaussian model describes the height of the sea surface at each point as a function of time and space. The Lagrange wave model describes the horizontal and vertical movements of individual water particles as functions of time and original location. This model is physically based, and a stochastic version has recently been advocated as a realistic model for asymmetric water waves. Since the stochastic Lagrange model treats both the vertical and the horizontal movements as Gaussian processes, it can be analysed using methods from the Gaussian theory. In this paper we present an analysis of the stochastic properties of the first-order stochastic Lagrange waves model, both as functions of time and as functions of space. A Slepian model for the description of the random shape of individual waves is also presented and analysed.

Fractional Laplace motion is obtained by subordinating fractional Brownian motion to a gamma process. Used recently to model hydraulic conductivity fields in geophysics, it might also prove useful in modeling financial time series. Its one-dimensional distributions are scale mixtures of normal laws, where the stochastic variance has the generalized gamma distribution. These one-dimensional distributions are more peaked at the mode than is a Gaussian distribution, and their tails are heavier. In this paper we derive the basic properties of the process, including a new property called stochastic self-similarity. We also study the corresponding fractional Laplace noise, which may exhibit long-range dependence. Finally, we discuss practical methods for simulation.

We study the tail behavior of regularly varying infinitely divisible random vectors and additive processes, i.e. stochastic processes with independent but not necessarily stationary increments. We show that the distribution of an infinitely divisible random vector is tail equivalent to its Lévy measure and we study the asymptotic decay of the probability for an additive process to hit sets far away from the origin. The results are extensions of known univariate results to the multivariate setting; we exemplify some of the difficulties that arise in the multivariate case.

In this paper we develop a constructive structure theory for a class of exponential functionals of Brownian motion which includes Asian option values. This is done in two stages of differing natures. As a first step, the functionals are represented as Laguerre reduction series obtained from main results of Schröder (2006), this paper's companion paper. These reduction series are new and given in terms of the negative moments of the integral of geometric Brownian motion, whose structure theory is developed in a second step. Providing a new angle on these processes, this is done by establishing connections with theta functions. Integral representations and computable formulae for the negative moments are thus derived and then shown to furnish highly efficient ways for computing the negative moments. Application of this paper's Laguerre reduction series in numerical examples suggests that one of the most efficient methods for the explicit valuation of Asian options is obtained. The paper also provides mathematical background results referred to in Schröder (2005c).

We present recursions for the total number, Sn, of mutations in a sample of n individuals, when the underlying genealogical tree of the sample is modelled by a coalescent process with mutation rate r>0. The coalescent is allowed to have simultaneous multiple collisions of ancestral lineages, which corresponds to the existence of large families in the underlying population model. For the subclass of Λ-coalescent processes allowing for multiple collisions, such that the measure Λ(dx)/x is finite, we prove that Sn/(nr) converges in distribution to a limiting variable, S, characterized via an exponential integral of a certain subordinator. When the measure Λ(dx)/x2 is finite, the distribution of S coincides with the stationary distribution of an autoregressive process of order 1 and is uniquely determined via a stochastic fixed-point equation of the form with specific independent random coefficients A and B. Examples are presented in which explicit representations for (the density of) S are available. We conjecture that Sn/E(Sn)→1 in probability if the measure Λ(dx)/x is infinite.

Let F(x) denote a distribution function in Rd and let F*n(x) denote the nth convolution power of F(x). In this paper we discuss the asymptotic behaviour of 1 - F*n(x) as x tends to ∞ in a certain prescribed way. It turns out that in many cases 1 - F*n(x) ∼ n(1 - F(x)). To obtain results of this type, we introduce and use a form of subexponential behaviour, thereby extending the notion of multivariate regular variation. We also discuss subordination, in which situation the index n is replaced by a random index N.

We study the harmonic moments of Galton-Watson processes that are possibly inhomogeneous and have positive values. Good estimates of these are needed to compute unbiased estimators for noncanonical branching Markov processes, which occur, for instance, in the modelling of the polymerase chain reaction. By convexity, the ratio of the harmonic mean to the mean is at most 1. We prove that, for every square-integrable branching mechanism, this ratio lies between 1-A/k and 1-A/k for every initial population of size k>A. The positive constants A and Aͤ are such that A≥Aͤ, are explicit, and depend only on the generation-by-generation branching mechanisms. In particular, we do not use the distribution of the limit of the classical martingale associated with the Galton-Watson process. Thus, emphasis is put on nonasymptotic bounds and on the dependence of the harmonic mean upon the size of the initial population. In the Bernoulli case, which is relevant for the modelling of the polymerase chain reaction, we prove essentially optimal bounds that are valid for every initial population size k≥1. Finally, in the general case and for sufficiently large initial populations, similar techniques yield sharp estimates of the harmonic moments of higher degree.

We consider the class of real-valued stochastic processes indexed on a compact subset of R or R2 with almost surely absolutely continuous sample paths. We obtain an implicit formula for the distributions of their maxima. The main result is the derivation of numerical bounds that turn out to be very accurate, in the Gaussian case, for levels that are not large. We also present the first explicit upper bound for the distribution tail of the maximum in the two-dimensional Gaussian framework. Numerical comparisons are performed with known tools such as the Rice upper bound and expansions based on the Euler characteristic. We deal numerically with the determination of the persistence exponent.

We give three applications of the Pecherskii-Rogozin-Spitzer identity for Lévy processes. First, we find the joint distribution of the supremum and the epoch at which it is ‘attained’ if a Lévy process has phase-type upward jumps. We also find the characteristics of the ladder process. Second, we establish general properties of perturbed risk models, and obtain explicit fluctuation identities in the case that the Lévy process is spectrally positive. Third, we study the tail asymptotics for the supremum of a Lévy process under different assumptions on the tail of the Lévy measure.

In this paper, we analyze a queueing system characterized by a space-time arrival process of customers served by a countable set of servers. Customers arrive at points in space and the server stations have space-dependent processing rates. The workload is seen as a Radon measure and the server stations can adapt their power allocation to the current workload. We derive the stability region of the queueing system in the usual stationary ergodic framework. The analysis of this stability region gives some counter-intuitive results. Some specific subclasses of policy are also studied. Wireless communications networks is a natural field of application for the model.

We consider growing random recursive trees in random environments, in which at each step a new vertex is attached (by an edge of random length) to an existing tree vertex according to a probability distribution that assigns the tree vertices masses proportional to their random weights. The main aim of the paper is to study the asymptotic behaviour of the distance from the newly inserted vertex to the tree's root and that of the mean numbers of outgoing vertices as the number of steps tends to ∞. Most of the results are obtained under the assumption that the random weights have a product form with independent, identically distributed factors.

In this paper we study the busy period in GI/G/1 work-conserving queues. We give the exact asymptotics of the tail distribution of the busy period under the light tail assumptions. We also study the workload process in the M/G/1 system conditioned to stay positive.

We model the evolution of the credit migration of a corporate bond as an inhomogeneous semi-Markov chain. The valuation of a defaultable bond is done with the use of the forward probability of no default up to maturity time. It is proved that, under the forward probability measure, the semi-Markov property is maintained. We find the functional relationships between the forward transition probability sequences and the real-world probability sequences. The stochastic monotonicity properties of the inhomogeneous semi-Markov model, which play a prominent role in these issues, are studied in detail. Finally, we study the term structure of credit spread, provide an algorithm for the estimation of the forward probabilities of transitions under the risk premium assumptions, and present an estimation method for the real-world probability sequences.
