Summary

Now Sarai Abram's wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar, the daughter of Pharaoh, whom Pharaoh gave to her for a handmaid at the time when he took her for a wife and was struck by a word from before the Lord.

And Sarai said unto Abram, ‘Behold now, the Lord hath restrained me from bearing; go in, now, unto my handmaid, and I will set her free; it may be that I shall be builded by her’. And Abram etc.

And Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar the Egyptian, her handmaid, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and set her free and gave her to Abram her husband to be his wife.

And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, she despised (the honour of) her mistress in her eyes.

And Sarai said unto Abram: ‘All my affliction is from you: trusting that you would act justly towards me, I left my country and my father's house, and I came up with you to a strange land. And because I was not able to bear, I set free my handmaid and I gave her to lie in your bosom; and when she saw that she was with child she held my honour in contempt before her.
