Summary
Now Jacob saw that provisions could be bought, and corn brought down from Egypt, and Jacob said unto his sons, ‘Why are you afraid to go down to Egypt?’
(These verses follow the Hebrew.)
But Benjamin, Joseph's brother, Jacob sent not with his brethren; for he said, ‘Behold, he is young, and I fear lest death befall him.
And the sons of Israel came each one by one gate, lest the evil eye should have power over them, since they went together to buy among the Canaanites who went to buy, for the famine was in the land of Canaan.
And Joseph was the governor over the land, and he knew that his brothers had come to buy, because he had put overseers in the gates of the city to record, of everyone who came there that day, his name and his father's name. He it was that sold corn to all the people of the land: and Joseph's brethren came, and they searched in the camps and open places and brothels, but they did not find him, and they went to his house, and bowed down themselves to him with their faces to the earth.
And Joseph saw his brethren, and he knew them, but made himself in their eyes as a stranger, and spake roughly with them; and he said unto them, ‘Whence come ye?’ And they said, ‘From the land of Canaan to buy food’.
