Summary
(These verses follow the Hebrew (though see p. 260 n. a for verses 1 and 4.)
Then they rent their clothes, and mighty strength was given to them, and they laded every man his ass, and returned to the city.
(These verses follow the Hebrew.)
And Judah said, ‘What shall we say unto my lord concerning the former money, and what shall we speak concerning the second money? or how shall we be innocent concerning the cup? From before the Lord hath been found out the iniquity of thy servants; behold, we are my lord's bondmen, both we, and he also in whose hand the cup is found.’
And he said, ‘God forbid that I should do so: the man in whose hand the cup is found, he shall be my bondman; but as for you, get you up in peace unto your father.’
Then Judah came near unto him, and said, ‘Oh my lord, let thy servant, I pray thee, speak a word in my lord's ears, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant: for at the hour when we came to you, you said to us: “I fear the Lord.” But now your judgements are made as the judgements of Pharaoh.’
(These verses follow the Hebrew, except that verse 21 adds, ‘… set mine eyes upon him for good’; and verse 29 is interpreted in the same way as xlii. 38.)
