It is known that the Dickson polynomial of the second kind permutes the elements of the finite prime field (p odd) when n + 1 = ±2 to each of the moduli and . Based on numerical evidence it has been conjectured that these congruences are necessary for the polynomial to permute . The conjecture is established here by a new method

Two Steiner triple systems (V, 𝓑) and (V, 𝓓) are orthogonal if they have no triples in common, and if for every two distinct intersecting triples {x,y,z} and {x, y, z} of 𝓑, the two triples {x,y,a} and {u, v, b} in (𝓓 satisfy a ≠ b. It is shown here that if v ≡ 1,3 (mod 6), v ≥ 7 and v ≠ 9, a pair of orthogonal Steiner triple systems of order v exist. This settles completely the question of their existence posed by O'Shaughnessy in 1968.

L'homotopie de l'espace des équivalences homotopie fibrées, est limite d'une suite spectrale dont on calcule ici la première différentielle. On montre, sous des hypothèses assez générales et dans le cas où le fibré admet une section, que cette différentielle est la somme des trois opérations suivantes:

La différentielle de la suite spectrale associée à l'homotopie de l'espace des équivalences d'homotopie d'un espace s'obtient en prenant la base réduite à un point. Ce calcul prolonge certains résultats de [KA 69], [CO-HA].

It is shown that the space hp(D,X) has the Kadec-Klee property with respect to pointwise norm convergence in the Banach space X if and only if X has the Radon-Nikodym property and every point of the unit sphere of X is a denting point of the unit ball of X. In addition, it is shown that hp(D,X) is locally uniformly rotund if and only if X is locally uniformly rotund and has the Radon-Nikodym property.

For any variety of groups, the relative inner rank of a given groupG is defined to be the maximal rank of the -free homomorphic images of G. In this paper we explore metabelian inner ranks of certain one-relator groups. Using the well-known Quillen-Suslin Theorem, in conjunction with an elegant result of Artamonov, we prove that if r is any "Δ-modular" element of the free metabelian group Mn of rank n > 2 then the metabelian inner rank of the quotient group Mn/(r) is at most [n/2]. As a corollary we deduce that the metabelian inner rank of the (orientable) surface group of genus k is precisely k. This extends the corresponding result of Zieschang about the absolute inner ranks of these surface groups. In continuation of some further applications of the Quillen-Suslin Theorem we give necessary and sufficient conditions for a system g = (g1,..., gk) of k elements of a free metabelian group Mn, k ≤ n, to be a part of a basis of Mn. This extends results of Bachmuth and Timoshenko who considered the cases k = n and k < n — 3 respectively.

Let G = GL(n, F) where F is a p-adic field, and let 𝓗(G) denote the Hecke algebra of spherical functions on G. Let u1,..., up denote a complete set of representatives for the unipotent conjugacy classes in G. For each 1 ≤ i ≤ p, let μi be the linear functional on such that μi(f) is the orbital integral of f over the orbit of ui. Waldspurger proved that the μi, 1 ≤ i ≤ p, are linearly independent. In this paper we give an elementary proof of Waldspurger's theorem which provides concrete information about the Hecke functions needed to separate orbits. We also prove a twisted version of Waldspurger's theorem and discuss the consequences for SL(n, F).

Chinburg's third invariant Ω(N/K, 3) ∊ C1(Z[Γ]) of a Galois extension N/K of number fields with group Γ is closely related to the Galois structure of unit groups and ideal class groups, and deep unsolved problems such as Stark's conjecture.

We give a formula for Ω(N/K, 3) modulo D(ZΓ) in the factorisability defect class group, reminiscent of analytic class number formulas. Specialising to the case of an absolutely abelian, real field N, we give a natural conjecture in terms of Hecke factorisations which implies the vanishing of the invariant in the defect class group.

We prove this conjecture when N has prime-power conductor using Euler systems of cyclotomic units, Ramachandra units and Hecke factorisation. This supports a general conjecture of Chinburg, which in our situation specialises to the statement that Ω(N/K, 3) = 0 for such extensions.

We also develop a slightly extended version of Euler systems of units for general abelian extensions, which will be applied to abelian extensions of imaginary quadratic fields elsewhere

In this paper we show that multi-dimensional bounded Besicovitch weights are good weights for the pointwise ergodic theorem for Dunford-Schwartz operators and positively dominated contractions of LP. This in particular implies new weighted results for multi-parameter measure preserving point transformations. The proofs show that Besicovitch weights are a very natural class when considered from the operator point of view. We also show that for 1 ≤ r < ∞, the r-bounded Besicovitch classes are all the same, generalizing a result of Bellow and Losert.

The main topic of this paper is to give characterizations of geometric properties of O-dimensional subschemes in terms of the algebraic structure of the canonical module of their projective coordinate ring. We characterize Cayley- Bacharach, (higher order) uniform position, linearly and higher order general position properties, and derive inequalities for the Hilbert functions of such schemes. Finally we relate the structure of the canonical module to properties of the minimal free resolution of X.

A new and very general and simple, yet powerful approach is introduced for obtaining new Tauberian theorems for a summability method V from known Tauberian conditions for V, where V is merely assumed to be linear and conservative. The technique yields the known theorems on the weakening of Tauberian conditions due to Meyer-König and Tietz and others and also improves many of them. Several new results are also obtained, even for classical methods of summability, including analogues of Tauber's second theorem for the Borel and logarithmic methods. The approach yields also new Tauberian conditions for the passage from summability by a method V to summability by a method V', as well as to more general methods of summability like absolute summability or summability in abstract spaces; the present paper however confines itself to ordinary summability.

We study operator algebras with contractive approximate identities and their double centralizer algebras. These operator algebras can be characterized as L∞- Banach algebras with contractive approximate identities. We provide two examples, which show that given a non-unital operator algebra A with a contractive approximate identity, its double centralizer algebra M(A) may admit different operator algebra matrix norms, with which M(A) contains A as an M-ideal. On the other hand, we show that there is a unique operator algebra matrix norm on the unitalization algebra A1 of A such that A1 contains A as an M-ideal.

The paper is concerned with the comparison of two solutions for a one-dimensional stochastic partial differential equation. Noting that support compactness of solutions propagates with passage of time, we define the SCP property and show that the SCP property and the strong positivity are two contrasting properties of solutions for one-dimensional SPDEs, which are due to degeneracy of the noise-term coefficient

The heat kernel of an amenable Lie group satisfies either pt ~ exp(—ct1/3) or pt ~ t-a as t → ∞. We give a condition on the Lie algebra which characterizes the two cases.
