Summary

I.

They have been left behind as if great breakers

had long gone out — floodtides that once had surged

and washed these stones until their forms emerged

with qualities that from their ebbed forsakers’

far too giving hands they were the takers

of, until their stone forms stood fixed fast.

They have been left there, basalt forms at last:

a halo or a mitre from their makers.

Or sometimes, set off by a private smile,

a clock-like face, as if with silent dial,

has kept time's peaceful hours for its own.

Now empty-portal-deep, these cannot hear

that listened like a shell once — like an ear

that caught this city's every mortal groan.

II.

All this is filled with an immense intent:

the way the back-dropped scenery in a play

must stand in for the world; and in the way

some role-dressed hero's entrance may be meant:

That's how this portal's darkness, coming on,

enacts as infinite a tragedy

deep down inside — as bountiful and free —

as God. Like Him, it makes itself a Son

so wondrously — a Son apportioned to

a host of minor parts — the silent kind —

drawn from the stock of miserable despair.

For thus emerges (this we know is true),

amidst the jettisoned, insane, and blind,

the Savior as the only actor there.

III

So ragen sie, die Herzen angehalten

(sie stehn auf Ewigkeit und gingen nie);

nur selten tritt aus dem Gefäll der Falten

eine Gebärde, aufrecht, steil wie sie,

und bleibt nach einem halben Schritte stehn

wo die Jahrhunderte sie überholen.

Sie sind im Gleichgewicht auf den Konsolen,

in denen eine Welt, die sie nicht sehn,

die Welt der Wirrnis, die sie nicht zertraten,

Figur und Tier, wie um sie zu gefährden,

sich krümmt und schüttelt und sie dennoch hält:

weil die Gestalten dort wie Akrobaten

sich nur so zuckend und so wild gebärden,

damit der Stab auf ihrer Stirn nicht fällt.
