Youthful Portrait of My Father

Summary

In the eyes, dream. The forehead seems to sense

some far-off thing. Great youth inheres in him;

his lips, unsmiling, make seductive hints.

Under the fully-braided ornaments —

his uniform imperially slim —:

the sabre's basket hilt, and hands that wait,

quite calm, composed, and aimless. Barely seen

now, how they seem to wish it were their fate

to fade while grasping what the distance strands.

And all the rest? Self-shrouded. Rubbed out clean

(as if my knowing never understands),

and greatly dimmed by what its depths will wipe

away. O fading fast Daguerreotype

in what are my more slowly disappearing hands.

Aussagendes. Die Stirne ohne Schlechtes

und gern im Schatten stiller Niederschau.

Das, als Zusammenhang, erst nur geahnt;

noch nie im Leiden oder im Gelingen

zusammgefaßt zu dauerndem Durchdringen,

doch so, als wäre mit zerstreuten Dingen

von fern ein Ernstes, Wirkliches geplant.
