Summary

Already, though far off, the pilgrim — shy

and foreign — senses how the Buddha's gold

drips down, as if whole guilty realms knew why

to leave here riches that cannot be told.

But as he draws near, he becomes confused

before such eyebrows full of dignity.

For these are not the cups those kingdoms used,

nor women's earrings. So, then: can there be

someone who knows this; someone who can tell us

just which golden things were melted down

to set this image on this flower-chalice:

more silent still — more yellow in its place —

than anything of gold, and all around,

touching itself the way it touches space.

Borghese

wie einen unbekannten Gegenstand;

sich selber ruhig in der schönen Schale

verbreitend ohne Heimweh, Kreis aus Kreis,

nur manchmal träumerisch und tropfenweis

sich niederlassend an den Moosbehängen

zum letzten Spiegel, der sein Becken leis

von unten lächeln macht mit Übergängen.
