CGA 163935 was evaluated for its growth regulating effect on common bermudagrass for two years and ‘Tifway’ bermudagrass for four years. The vegetative growth of mowed common bermudagrass was suppressed for 5 wk when CGA 163935 was applied at 0.2 kg ha–1 followed by 0.1 kg ha–1 2 wk later and mowed Tifway bermudagrass was suppressed for 4 wk after application of 0.2 kg ha–1. CGA 163935 suppressed vegetative growth of non-mowed common bermudagrass for 9 wk and non-mowed Tifway bermudagrass for 2 to 8 wk at the same rates. Common bermudagrass tolerated CGA 163935 when applied initially at 0.2 kg ha–1 and followed by 0.1 kg ha–1 at a 2-wk interval for a total 0.3 kg ha–1 rate. However, common bermudagrass was severely injured (> 30%) when CGA 163935 was applied at 0.2 kg ha–1 in each of two applications for a total rate of 0.4 kg ha–1. Tifway bermudagrass tolerated CGA 163935 when applied at 0.2 kg ha–1 as a single application or when the 0.2 kg ha–1 was followed by 0.1 kg ha–1 at a 4-wk interval. Tifway bermudagrass was severely injured (> 30%) when CGA 163935 was applied at 0.4 kg ha–1 as a single application or when 0.2 kg ha–1 was followed by 0.1 kg ha–1 at 2- or 3-wk interval. Seedheads were suppressed in common bermudagrass for 1 to 2 wk with CGA 163935 at 0.4 kg ha–1.

Five field experiments were conducted during 1987–89 to determine the effectiveness of using activated carbon in transplant water to reduce injury to tobacco from herbicides incorporated before transplanting. Herbicides used were dicamba, chlorimuron, atrazine, lactofen, flumetralin, pendimethalin, pebulate, and imazaquin. Activated carbon was applied in the transplant water at a rate of 9 kg ha–1 in 1987 and 18 kg ha–1 in 1988 and 1989. Measurements taken were visual stunting ratings, yield, grade index, fresh and dry weights of roots and shoots, and percent sugars and total alkaloids in cured leaves. Activated carbon consistently reduced phytotoxicity of imazaquin and chlorimuron. As much as four- and two-fold yield increases were obtained when imazaquin and chlorimuron, respectively, were applied in conjunction with activated carbon. Less consistent results were obtained in reducing the phytotoxic effects of dicamba, atrazine, and flumetralin. Phytotoxicity without activated carbon was not consistently obtained with lactofen, pendimethalin, or pebulate.

Some annual weeds, perennial herbs, and suffrutescent half shrubs are unique in that their populations are cyclic in nature and relatively short-lived. This variability presents a confounding factor that makes management decisions about control of these weeds difficult. This paper presents a procedure, using Markov processes, that gives additional information for managing cyclic weed populations. The Markov chain model is used to evaluate the interyear patterns of broom snakeweed survival when growing on New Mexico rangeland.

Field studies were conducted to evaluate common cocklebur control in soybean with imazaquin applied preplant incorporated (PPI), preemergence (PRE), and postemergence (POST) at rates ranging from 24 to 140 g ai ha-1. With logistic regression analysis, predictions of common cocklebur control with imazaquin at 140 g ha-1 ranged from 92 to 95% (PPI), 87 and 92% (PRE), and 88 to 98% (POST) when rainfall was received for activation of PRE treatments and when weeds were not moisture stressed at time of POST application. When imazaquin was reduced to 70 g ha-1 under the same conditions, weed control was no higher than 88% PPI and 78% PRE. For all locations and years, common cocklebur control ranged from 79 to 91% for imazaquin POST at 24 g ha-1. Soybean yield was positively correlated with common cocklebur control (r = 0.66, P < 0.05).

The soil organic matter and/or humic matter fraction was highly correlated with the adsorption of ICIA-0051 herbicide onto five soils; clay content and other soil factors were less correlated. The Freundlich equation was used to describe the adsorption of ICIA-0051 by the various soils. Based on the K constants, the general order for adsorption for each soil was Hyde silty clay loam > Frederick silt loam > Davidson clay = Bojac sandy loam > Appling loamy sand. Across all soils, 25 to 50% of the amount adsorbed was removed by two desorptions. Appling, Bojac, and Davidson soils retained less herbicide after two desorptions than did Frederick and Hyde.

Experimental controlled release starch granules (CRSG) containing 5.3% a.i. (w/w) norflurazon or 6% a.i. (w/w) simazine retarded the leaching of both herbicides in loamy sand soil columns when compared to commercial formulations of norflurazon [80% (w/w) dry flowable] or simazine [90% (w/w) water dispersible granule]. Barley bioassays indicated norflurazon and simazine remained in the surface 0 to 2.5 cm of soil when applied as CRSG formulations and moved to a depth of 15 cm when applied as commercial dry formulations and leached with 6 cm of water. CRSG placed on pre-wetted soil columns began to release norflurazon by 7 d at 25 C or 14 d at 15 C, and subsequent leaching moved norflurazon beyond the top 2.5 cm of the soil column.

Effects of linuron on annual bluegrass control and Kentucky bluegrass cultivar tolerance were studied in field and growth chamber experiments. In controlled environment experiments, linuron at 0.06, 0.12, 0.25, 0.50, and 0.75 kg ai ha-1 was applied to pure stands of annual bluegrass and eight Kentucky bluegrass cultivars. Linuron at the two highest rates controlled annual bluegrass, reducing the clipping dry weight by more than 85% 4 wk after treatment, and by 65 to 92% 6 wk after treatment. Growth of Kentucky bluegrass was reduced with the most severe reduction occurring 2 wk after linuron application. All cultivars exhibited normal growth 8 wk after treatment. In field experiments, linuron at rates from 1.5 to 2.0 kg ai ha-1 controlled annual bluegrass in old (> 5 yr) Kentucky bluegrass stands, and in 16 cultivars of 1-yr and 2-yr-old Kentucky bluegrass stands, with little or no damage. At rates of 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 kg ai ha-1 linuron, damage to newly seeded cultivars was moderate to severe. However, 6 to 7 wk after linuron application to newly seeded cultivars, stand density and turf quality were equivalent to untreated checks.

Velvetleaf from Mississippi and Wisconsin and soybean (var. Williams) were grown in five temperature regimes (12/4, 19/11, 26/18, 33/25, and 40/32 C day/night) in controlled-environment chambers. Leaf appearance rates increased with temperature in both species, ranging from 0.06 to 0.69 leaves per day in velvetleaf and 0.07 to 0.38 leaves per day in soybean. The threshold temperature for leaf appearance in both species was 5 to 6 C. The largest leaves of both species were produced at 26/18 C. By 55 d after emergence, the greatest total leaf area per plant occurred at 26/18 C or above in both species. Reproductive development occurred earliest at 33/25 C in velvetleaf and at 26/18 C in soybean. This limited vegetative growth in velvetleaf more than in soybean. The weed/crop ratio for total leaf area increased with increasing temperature, indicating that velvetleaf probably would be more competitive with soybean under higher temperatures. The two populations of velvetleaf generally responded similarly to temperatures.

The persistence of herbicide-resistant biotypes within a given weed population can be highly correlated with the longevity of its seed in the soil and its reproductive ability. This study compared seed longevity of sulfonylurea-susceptible (S) and -resistant (R) biotypes of prickly lettuce in soil at three depths and two locations. Seed longevity in soil was not different between R and S biotypes. Seed longevity was longer when seed were buried compared to seed placed on the soil surface. A field study on seed production showed that prickly lettuce plants produced an average of 14 flower heads and 181 seed per day. Average seed weight was 0.6 mg. No differences were observed in the fecundity or seed viability between the R and S biotypes. However, seed from R biotype plants germinated as fast or faster than seed from S biotype plants.

Experiments conducted in the greenhouse indicated that 2,4-D antagonism of glyphosate toxicity to wheat was sodium salt = butoxyethyl ester ≥ diethanolamine. Isopropylamine salt of 2,4-D generally was not antagonistic to glyphosate phytotoxicity. Isopropylamine salt of 2,4-D did not influence the antagonism of glyphosate by inorganic salts in the spray carrier. Antagonism of glyphosate toxicity to wheat by 2,4-D increased when sodium bicarbonate, calcium chloride, and ferric sulfate were in the spray carrier water. Isopropylamine alone as an adjuvant enhanced glyphosate toxicity to wheat, and overcame ferric sulfate and sodium bicarbonate antagonism of glyphosate. Diammonium sulfate adjuvant overcame antagonism to glyphosate phytotoxicity from 2,4-D, sodium bicarbonate, and calcium chloride each alone or the salts in combination with 2,4-D. Nonionic surfactants differed in enhancement of glyphosate but none overcame antagonism from salts or 2,4-D.

Trifluralin-resistant Palmer amaranth populations were confirmed at eight locations within two of the ten-county cotton growing region of South Carolina. Different levels of resistance to six dinitroaniline herbicides were observed, but no resistance was observed to herbicides from nine other chemical groups. Five to six times more trifluralin was required to control a resistant than a susceptible biotype under field conditions.

Tolerances of soybean and rotational crops wheat and corn to chlorimuron (0.02 to 0.14 kg ai ha–1), clomazone (0.56 to 3.36 kg ha–1), imazaquin (0.07 to 0.42 kg ha–1) and imazethapyr (0.05 to 0.31 kg ha–1) were evaluated in field studies. No visible soybean injury was observed. No reduction in soybean population, height, or yield occurred from the use of these herbicides, in 1986 or 1987. Differences in wheat yields among treatments were not significant in 1987 or 1988. Corn population, number of ears, ear weight, or yield were not different.

The effect of methylated seed oil (MSO), the organosilicone adjuvant DC-X2-5394, and ammonium sulfate on the efficacy, absorption, and spray retention of primisulfuron applied alone or with atrazine, dicamba, and bentazon to shattercane and giant foxtail was evaluated. Primisulfuron efficacy on both species was reduced by the three tank-mix combinations. Atrazine antagonism was not explained by decreases in foliar absorption and/or spray retention. Reductions in primisulfuron absorption and/or foliar spray retention appeared to cause bentazon antagonism on both weeds and dicamba antagonism on shattercane. MSO, DC-X2-5394, and ammonium sulfate completely reversed dicamba and bentazon antagonism on shattercane and partially reversed bentazon antagonism on giant foxtail by increasing foliar absorption and/or spray retention. Compared with non-ionic surfactant, MSO and DC-X2-5394 consistently increased giant foxtail control with primisulfuron by increasing foliar absorption and/or spray retention.

Six commercial petroleum oil (PO) adjuvants differed in their enhancement of imazethapyr phytotoxicity to green foxtail and kochia but not to redroot pigweed, when imazethapyr was applied postemergence at 17 g ha–1. Imazethapyr at 5 g ha–1 plus 27 combinations of three oils and nine emulsifiers reduced kochia growth by 61 to 88%. Optimum emulsifier concentration in a PO adjuvant ranged from 15 to 20% (v/v). All PO adjuvants tested produced fair to excellent oil-inwater emulsions with imazethapyr; however, emulsion stability did not correlate with weed control.

Field experiments were conducted at the Lacombe Research Station from 1989 to 1991 to determine the influence of various adjuvants on sethoxydim activity. In all experiments sethoxydim was applied at 100 g ai ha-1 to green foxtail, wheat, wild oat, and barley seeded in a canola crop. Of the four grass species, green foxtail was the most susceptible and barley was the least susceptible to sethoxydim. CC 16255 was the most effective adjuvant followed by either of two sources of ammonium sulphate (liquid or granular) and then Merge. Liquid and granular forms of ammonium sulphate were equally effective in enhancing sethoxydim activity. Several other adjuvants, including Enhance, Savol, and XE 1167, were moderately effective in the enhancement of sethoxydim activity. Adding Canplus 411 to Merge was not usually beneficial, but additions of Canplus 411 to Enhance often increased sethoxydim activity compared with sethoxydim and Enhance alone. Agral 90 and LI-700 were of little or no value as adjuvants with sethoxydim.

Field experiments were conducted in 1989 and 1990 to evaluate the tolerance of ‘Penncross' creeping bentgrass and ‘Tifway’ bermudagrass fall-overseeded with perennial ryegrass to irrigation water containing simazine. Creeping bentgrass was more sensitive to simazine than the bermudagrass/ryegrass mixture. The predicted critical simazine concentration necessary to reduce creeping bentgrass quality ≤ 60% was 0.22 mg L–1 which corresponded to a cumulative simazine rate of 98 g ha–1. For bermudagrass/ryegrass, the predicted critical simazine concentration and cumulative simazine rate that reduced quality ≤ 60% was 0.68 mg L–1 and 306 g ha–1, respectively.

Field studies were conducted to examine hairy nightshade control with, and potato tolerance to, bentazon or bentazon plus nonionic surfactant (NIS), petroleum oil concentrate (POC), methylated seed oil (MSO), BCH-815, or urea-ammonium nitrate (UAN). Bentazon treatments were applied early or late POST. Hairy nightshade control with bentazon at 0.56 kg ha–1 plus POC, MSO, BCH-815, or UAN was equal to or better than bentazon alone at 1.12 kg ha–1 regardless of time of application. Potato injury with bentazon plus additives applied late POST was sometimes greater than with bentazon alone, but use of additives did not reduce potato yield or quality. Yield of US ♯1 tubers was lower when bentazon was applied late POST than when applied early POST in one of two years.

Germinability and viability of leafy spurge seeds following ingestion by sheep and goats were evaluated. Four sheep and four goats were separated into eight pens and fed individually a known number of leafy spurge seeds. Following ingestion, goats and sheep passed leafy spurge seeds for 4 and 9 d, respectively. Eighteen percent of the seeds fed were recovered in the fecal material of both species of livestock. Number of seeds recovered, expressed as percent of total seeds fed, decreased with time (P < 0.01). Germinability and viability of the recovered seeds were less than the control (P < 0.01). Sheep were more effective than goats in reducing germinability and viability of leafy spurge seeds (P < 0.01). Results indicate that sheep and goats are effective biological tools for reducing spread of leafy spurge seeds. However, animals grazing mature leafy spurge should be confined for 5 d, until all viable seeds have passed through the digestive system, before they are rotated onto pastures that are devoid of leafy spurge.

Field experiments were conducted from 1985 through 1989 to evaluate herbicide selectivity and impact on seeding-year yields of spring oat and underseeded alfalfa, and carryover weed control benefits from increased legume-fixed N for second-year dryland no-till corn. PRE metolachlor, pendimethalin, and prodiamine controlled green foxtail and POST bromoxynil or 2,4-DB controlled broadleaf weeds. These herbicides caused 0 to 20% alfalfa injury and 0 to 17% oat injury, and increased oat yield one of three years but did not increase the yield of underseeded alfalfa. POST pyridate, thifensulfuron, and tribenuron were too injurious to either oat, alfalfa, or both crops. Forage yields of annual ‘Nitro’ and perennial ‘Wrangler’ alfalfa seeded alone were greater than when they were underseeded in oat, with herbicides applied in both systems. As a result of drought in 1988 and 1989, yield of second-year corn planted after one-year alfalfa was not increased from potentially greater legume-fixed N. Dryland corn yield following monoculture oat or corn was 254% higher than corn following alfalfa.

The interaction of imazethapyr and selected graminicides on annual grass control was studied in field experiments. Tank-mix combinations of imazethapyr with clethodim, fluazifop-P, quizalofop, or sethoxydim resulted in an antagonistic interaction. Control of large crabgrass, fall panicum, and broadleaf signalgrass by each graminicide decreased when tank-mixed with imazethapyr as compared with each graminicide applied alone. Sequential applications of imazethapyr, relative to each graminicide, successfully overcame the antagonism. Imazethapyr applied 5 d before or 1 d after each of the graminicides did not decrease grass weed control compared with each graminicide alone. Imazethapyr applied 3 or 1 d before, or the same day as the graminicides, generally decreased grass weed control.
