A Banach space X is called a twisted sum of the Banach spaces Y and Z if it has a subspace isomorphic to Y such that the corresponding quotient is isomorphic to Z. A twisted Hilbert space is a twisted sum of Hilbert spaces. We prove the following tongue-twister: there exists a twisted sum of two subspaces of a twisted Hilbert space that is not isomorphic to a subspace of a twisted Hilbert space. In other words, being a subspace of a twisted Hilbert space is not a three-space property.

The main goal of the paper is the construction of a triangular mapping F of the square with zero topological entropy, possessing a minimal set M such that F|M is a strongly chaotic homeomorphism, as well as other properties that are impossible for continuous maps on an interval.

To do this we define a parametric class of triangular maps on Q × I, where Q is an infinite minimal set on the interval, which are extendable to continuous triangular maps F: I2 → I2. This class can be used to create other examples.

This note presents an analogue of the classical Heisenberg-Weyl uncertainty principle for the Dunkl transform on ℝN. Its proof is based on expansions with respect to generalised Hermite functions.

Roughly speaking, we show that a Banach space X has the fixed point property for nonexpansive mappings whenever X has the WORTH property and the unit sphere of X does not contain a triangle with sides of length larger than 2.

We find the spectrum of the Berezin operator T on L∞(Bn), then we show that if f ∈ L∞(Bn) satisfies Sf = rf for some r in the unit circle, where S is any convex combination of the iterations of T, then f is M-harmonic.

Finally we decompose the subspace of L∞(Bn) where lim Tkf exists into the direct sum of two subspaces of L∞(Bn).

We generalise a result of Hosaka and Kato by proving that if the set of periodic points of a continuous map of a tree is closed then each chain recurrent point is a periodic one. We also show that the topological entropy of a tree map is zero if and only if the w-limit set of each chain recurrent point (which is not periodic) contains no periodic points.

In this paper, we study the existence of solutions of generalised variational-like inequality problems by using a generalised form of the Fan-KKM-Theorem. We also introduce a gap function for generalised variational-like inequalities.

In this article we define symmetric geodesies on conformal compactifications of Euclidean Jordan algebras and classify symmetric geodesics for the Euclidean Jordan algebra of all n × n symmetric real matrices. Furthermore, we show that the closed geodesics for the Euclidean Jordan algebra of all 2 × 2 symmetric real matrices are realised as the torus knots in the Shilov boundary of a Lie ball.

A characterisation is given of all (finitely additive) spectral measures in a Banach space (and defined on an algebra of sets) which satisfy a Lipschitz condition. This also corrects (slightly) an analogous result in the more specialised setting of resolutions of the identity of scalar-type spectral operators (due to C.A. McCarthy).

We construct Poincaré series and Eisenstein series for automorphic pseudodifferential operators, and show that the space of automorphic pseudodifferential operators associated to cusp forms is generated by Poincaré series. We also obtain explicit formulas for such Poincaré series and Eisenstein series.

The recently introduced two-parameter eight-state Uq [gl(3|1)] supersymmetric fermion model is extended to include boundary terms. Nine classes of boundary conditions are constructed, all of which are shown to be integrable via the graded boundary quantum inverse scattering method. The boundary systems are solved by using the coordinate Bethe ansatz and the Bethe ansatz equations are given for all nine cases.

We investigate how varying the parameters of t-(ν, κ, λ) designs affects the sizes of smallest defining sets. In particular, we consider the effect of varying each of the parameters t, ν and λ. We establish a number of new bounds for the sizes of smallest defining sets and find the size of smallest defining sets for an infinite family of designs. We also show how one of our results can be applied to the problem of finding critical sets of Latin squares.

Polytopes of roots of type An−1 are investigated, which we call Pn. The polytopes, , of positive roots and the origin have been considered in relation to other branches of mathematics [4]. We show that exactly n copies of forms a disjoint cover of Pn. Moreover, those n copies of can be obtained by letting the elements of a subgroup of the symmetric group Sn generated by an n-cycle act on . We also characterise the faces of Pn and some facets of , which we believe to be useful in some optimisation problems. As by-products, we obtain an interesting identity on the number of lattice paths and a triangulation of the product of two simplices.

Boundedness and compactness of little Hankel operators from H∞ to the Bloch space and the little Bloch space are characterised.

Let L be a possibly infinite-dimensional Lie algebra of maximal class. We show that if L admits the structure of a Lie p-algebra then the dimension of L can be at most p + 1. Furthermore, this bound is best possible.

We study images of Hankel operators on the Bergman or Hardy space of the poly-disk. We give characterisations of pairs of antiholomorphic symbols inducing Hankel operators whose images are mutually orthogonal.

Let E(x) be a monic polynomial over the finite field q of q elements. A formula for the number of n × n matrices θ over q, satisfying E(θ) = 0 is obtained by counting the representations of the algebra q[x]/(E(x)) of degree n. This simplifies a formula of Hodges.

We obtain a new characterisation of finite representability of operators and present new results about uniformly convexifying, Rademacher cotype and Rademacher type operators on some classical Banach spaces, including JB* -triples and spaces of analytic functions.

Let be a homogeneous tree, o be a fixed reference point in , and be the closed ball of radius N in centred at o. In this paper we characterise the image under the Helgason–Fourier transformation ℋ of , the space of functions supported in , and of , the space of rapidly decreasing functions on . In both cases our results are counterparts of known results for the Helgason–Fourier transformation on noncompact symmetric spaces.

Every group acts transitively by conjugation on each of its conjugacy classes of elements. It is natural to wonder when this action becomes multiply transitive. In this paper, we determine all finite groups which act faithfully and 2-transitively on a conjugacy class of elements. We also give some consequences including a solvability criterion based on what fraction of elements belong to conjugacy classes upon which the group acts faithfully and 2–transitively.
