Summary

IDALIA, Qld (eye-dayl-yă), a south-eastern locality in the City of townsville (map 5).

ILFRACOMBE, Qld (tll-fră-kohm), a shire (pop. 327) and township (23 30S 144 30E, map 5) to the east of longreach. It was named after Ilfracombe in Devon, England. There are no other centres in the shire.

ILLAMURTA SPRINGS, NT (illă-mer-tă), a conservation reserve (130 ha) some 190 km by road south-west of alice springs (map 3). Within the reserve are the ruins of a police station established there in 1891 in an attempt to prevent Aborigines killing cattle.

ILLAWARRA, NSW (illă-worră), a district and statistical division on the south coast (maps 6B & 14B). The Illawarra District extends from just north of stanwell park to the shoalhaven river and is bounded on the west by plateaus and spurs of the great dividing range. Local government areas within the Illawarra Statistical Division are the Cities of shoalhaven and wollongong, the Municipalities of kiama and shellharbour and part of the Shire of wingecarribee. Its population of 309 345 constitutes about 6% of that of the State as a whole. The name ‘Illawarra’ probably came from a Dharawal Aboriginal term, elouera, said to mean either ‘high place by the sea’ or ‘white clay mountain’, but there is no linguistic evidence for this.

General description. The Illawarra District is generally fertile, with the grazing of dairy cattle the main form of land use. The dairying breed Australian Illawarra Shorthorn was evolved there.
