Summary

LA PEROUSE, NSW (lah pĕrooz), a south-eastern Sydney beachside suburb in randwick Municipality (map 26:G4). It stands on the north-ern side of the entrance to botany bay. The name commemorates the French navigator the Compte de la Pérouse, who encountered Governor Arthur Phillip in Botany Bay in 1788. La Perouse has a considerable Aboriginal population and there is an Aboriginal art gallery in the museum there.

LAANECOORIE RESERVOIR, Vic. (lană-koo- ree), a storage on the loddon river near dunolly (map 15) used for irrigation.

LABILLARDIERE STATE RESERVE, Tas. (lă-bill-ah-dee-air), a reserve (2332 ha) on bruny island (map 7) featuring coastal heath.

LABRADOR, Qld (lab-ră-daw), a northern locality of the City of gold coast (map 10).

LACEPEDE, SA (lassă-peed), a district council area (pop. 2377) administered from kingston south east (map 9). It takes its name from lacepede bay, on which it stands. Other localities within the district council's boundaries include Blackford, Rosetown and Wangolina.

LACEPEDE BAY, SA (lassă-peed), 36 51S 139 47E (map 9), a shallow bay at the southern end of The coorong. The French explorer Nicolas Baudin named it in honour of the Compte Lacépède, a notable naturalist. kingston south east is the only port on the bay, and a fishery is based there.

LACHLAN, NSW (lock-lan), a shire (pop. 8049) centred on condobolin (map 6A). It takes its name from the lachlan river.
