Summary
GABO ISLAND, Vic. (gay-boh), 37 34S 149 55E (map 16), a small island to the east of mallacoota inlet important mainly for its lighthouse. James Cook gave it what he thought to be its Aboriginal name.
GAGEBROOK, Tas. (gage-brook), a northern Hobart suburb in the Municipality of brighton (map 24:A1). It was named after a house built there in 1880 by John Frederick Gage.
GAILES, Qld (gaylz), a south-western Brisbane suburb just inside the north-eastern border of the City of ipswich (map 23:B4).
GALIWINKU, NT (galĭ-win-koo), the name of an island off the coast of arnhem land (map 3) and of the Aboriginal community (pop. 1027) near its south-western point. The island, formerly known as Elcho Island, is about 50 km long and 10 km wide. The community is self-governing through the Galiwinku Community Inc. Its members produce timber and vegetables but largely live a traditional hunting and gathering life.
GALSTON, NSW (gawl-stŏn), a town (pop. 1162) in hornsby Shire on the north-western fringes of metropolitan Sydney (map 13:D6). It was named after a town in Scotland. Until recently the district was mainly a producer of citrus and stone fruit, but it is rapidly becoming residential.
GAMMON RANGES NATIONAL PARK, SA (gamm-ŏn), 3025S 13905E, a park (128 200 ha) to the west of BELTANA (map 4). It is in the flinders ranges and features rugged wilderness.
GANMAIN, NSW (gan-main), 34 48S 147 02E (map 17), a town (pop. 614) most of which is in narrandera Shire and the remainder within the boundaries of the City of wagga wagga.
