In strong-field physics experiments with ultraintense lasers, a single-shot cross-correlator (SSCC) is essential for fast optimization of the pulse contrast and meaningful comparison with theory for each pulse shot. To simultaneously characterize an ultrashort pulse and its long pedestal, the SSCC device must have both a high resolution and a large temporal window. However, the resolution and window in all kinds of single-shot measurement contradict each other in principle. Here we propose and demonstrate a novel SSCC device with two separate measurement channels: channel-1 for the large-window pedestal measurement has a moderate resolution but a large window, while channel-2 for the ultrashort pulse measurement has a small window but a high resolution; this allows the accurate characterization of the pulse contrast in a single shot. A two-channel SSCC device with a 200-fs resolution and 114-ps window has been developed and tested for its application in ultraintense lasers at 800 nm.

In this paper, we review the status of the multifunctional experimental platform at the National Laboratory of High Power Laser and Physics (NLHPLP). The platform, including the SG-II laser facility, SG-II 9th beam, SG-II upgrade (SG-II UP) facility, and SG-II 5 PW facility, is operational and available for interested scientists studying inertial confinement fusion (ICF) and a broad range of high-energy-density physics. These facilities can provide important experimental capabilities by combining different pulse widths of nanosecond, picosecond, and femtosecond scales. In addition, the SG-II UP facility, consisting of a single petawatt system and an eight-beam nanosecond system, is introduced including several laser technologies that have been developed to ensure the performance of the facility. Recent developments of the SG-II 5 PW facility are also presented.

In this paper, we propose an integral equation approach for pricing an American-style Parisian up-and-out call option under the Black–Scholes framework. The main difficulty of pricing this option lies in the determination of its optimal exercise price, which is a three-dimensional surface, instead of a two-dimensional (2-D) curve as is the case for a “one-touch” barrier option. In our approach, we first reduce the 3-D pricing problem to a 2-D one by using the “moving window” technique developed by Zhu and Chen (2013, Pricing Parisian and Parasian options analytically. Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control, 37(4): 875-896), then apply the Fourier sine transform to the 2-D problem to obtain two coupled integral equations in terms of two unknown quantities: the option price at the asset barrier and the optimal exercise price. Once the integral equations are solved numerically by using an iterative procedure, the calculation of the option price and the hedging parameters is straightforward from their integral representations. Our approach is validated by a comparison between our results and those of the trusted finite difference method. Numerical results are also provided to show some interesting features of the prices of American-style Parisian up-and-out call options and the behaviour of the associated optimal exercise boundaries.

We present new estimates on evaporation and groundwater recharge in the Badain Jaran Desert, western Inner Mongolia of northwestern China, based on a modified Penman Equation suitable for lakes in China. Geochemical data and water balance calculations suggest that local rainfall makes a significant contribution to groundwater recharge and that past lake-level variations in this desert environment should reflect palaeoclimatic changes. The chronology of lake-level change, established by radiocarbon and U-series disequilibrium dating methods, indicates high lake levels and a wetter climate beginning at ca. 10 ka and lasting until the late mid-Holocene in the Badain Jaran Desert. The greatest extension of lakes in the inter-dune depressions indicates that the water availability was greatest during the mid-Holocene. Relicts of Neolithic tools and pottery of Qijia Culture (2400–1900 BC) suggest relatively intensive human activity in the Badain Jaran Desert during the early and middle Holocene, supporting our interpretation of a less harsh environment. Wetter climates during the Holocene were likely triggered by an intensified East Asian summer monsoon associated with strong insolation.

We derive an analytical solution for the value of Parisian up-and-in calls by using the “moving window” technique for pricing European-style Parisian up-and-out calls. Our pricing formula can be applied to both European-style and American-style Parisian up-and-in calls, due to the fact that with an “in” barrier, the option holder cannot do or decide on anything before the option is activated, and once the option is activated it is just a plain vanilla call, which could be of American style or European style.

The work presented in this paper is a study of output temporal contrast degradation by near-field quality deterioration, such as intensity modulation and wavefront deviation, in a large aperture high power short pulse laser system. A two-step focusing algorithm with a coordinate transform based on the Fresnel approximation in the space domain is used for simulating the output focused by an off-axis parabolic mirror. The temporal contrast degradation by intensity modulation and wavefront deviation is analyzed and the influence of the diameter on the temporal contrast degradation is revealed. The simulation and assumption results based on the parameters of the Shen Guang-II laser system are compared with the online experimental temporal contrast data. The near-field quality deterioration might lead to temporal contrast degradation, hindering higher temporal contrast in large aperture high power short pulse laser systems.

A stable mesoporous multilamellar silica vesicle (MSV) was developed with a gallery pore size of about 14.0 nm. A simulative enzyme, hemoglobin (Hb), was immobilized on this newly developed MSV and a conventional mesoporous silica material SBA-15. The structures and the immobilization of Hb on the mesoporous supports were characterized with x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, Fourier transform infrared, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and so forth. MSV is a promising support for immobilizing Hb due to its large pore size and high Hb immobilization capacity (up to 522 mg/g) compared to SBA-15 (236 mg/g). Less than 5% Hb was leached from Hb/MSV at pH 6.0. The activity study indicated that the immobilized Hb retained most peroxidase activity compared to free Hb. Thermal stability of the immobilized Hb was improved by the proctetive environment of MSV and SBA-15. Such an Hb-mesoporous support with high Hb immobilization capacity, high activity, and enhanced thermal stability will be attractive for practical applications.

Fatigue properties of a wrought Ni-base superalloy treated by laserglazing and post heat treatments have been investigated. Tests have been run both by the rotating bend fatigue at 700°C and the vibration fatigue of turbine blades at room temperature. The results showed that the fatigue property of laserglazed specimens was obviously deteriorated because of resolution of γ′ phase and grain boundary carbide, interdendritic segregation of TiC and microcrack caused by thermal stress. However, suitable preheating and post heat treatment added before and after laserglazing can eliminate these defects and recover the fatigue life of this superalloy. Selected laser processing technology was applied to repairing blades rejected due to microcracks at trailing edge. The vibration fatigue life of blades repaired by laserglazing and post heat treatment was over two times as high as that of normal used blades with same service time.
