In the present work, direct numerical simulation of a laboratory-scale lean premixed reacting jet in cross-flow was performed to explore the flow–flame structures and turbulence–flame interactions. A jet of lean premixed ethylene–air mixtures (equivalence ratio $\phi = 0.6$) was injected into a hot vitiated cross-flow. Both non-reacting and reacting cases were simulated. It was found that the reacting jet penetrates deeper in the cross-flow with a weaker shear layer compared with the non-reacting one. The wake of the non-reacting and reacting jet is characterized by vertical vortices and recirculation zones, respectively. As for the flame structure of the reacting case, the reaction intensity varies considerably in different flame zones. The heat release rate on the leeward side is higher than that on the windward side, but lower than that of the corresponding laminar flame. The analysis of the turbulence–flame interactions of the reacting case showed that the large local Damköhler number ($Da$) related to reaction-induced dilatations results in an increased tendency of the scalar gradient to align with the most extensive strain rate, which is more evident in the regions with high heat release rate on the leeward side. Negative dilatation regions with positive tangential strain rate and negative normal strain rate are observed on the windward side. High positive dilatations appear on the flame front of the leeward side. The tangential strain rate is negatively correlated with the normal strain rate and curvature. Regions with a high local $Da$ on the windward side correspond with high positive curvature regions.

In the present study, turbulent particle-laden boundary layer combustion over a flat plate is investigated using direct numerical simulation (DNS). A two-way coupled Eulerian–Lagrangian point particle method is used for the solid phase. The effects of particle Stokes numbers, mass loadings and chemical reactions on the interactions between particles and boundary layer turbulence in the near-wall region are explored. It was found that particle heat transfer is dominant over wall heat transfer in the reacting case with heavy particles and large mass loadings, resulting in a lower fluid temperature. Particle accumulation due to the turbophoresis effect in the near-wall region is observed, which is more prominent in the cases with a large Stokes number. The turbophoresis effect is examined via the magnitude of streamwise vorticity $\varOmega _x$. It is shown that $\varOmega _x$ is attenuated by heavy particles, and the attenuation increases with increasing mass loadings. Therefore, particle wall–accumulation is less prominent in the cases with large mass loadings. Compared with the non-reacting cases, the distribution of particles is more inhomogeneous for the reacting cases, where the particles move faster due to intense reactions with increasing wall-normal distance. Finally, the flow topologies and the Reynolds stress anisotropy are examined to understand turbulence modulation by combustion and particles. It was suggested that light particles augment the vortex-dominant topologies, whereas heavy particles have an opposite effect. The anisotropy mapping of the Reynolds stress shows that the flows become more one-dimensional in the near-wall region for the cases with combustion and/or large mass loadings.

The aim of this study is to establish a fundamental understanding of the flame structure and autoignition characteristics of supercritical hydrothermal flames in three-dimensional shear-driven turbulence. The study involves direct numerical simulation of a non-premixed flame (with fuel comprising a mixture of 10 % $\textrm {H}_2$ and 90 % $\textrm {H}_2\textrm {O}$ in terms of mole fraction) at 25.0 MPa in a slot jet; detailed reaction mechanism and multispecies real-fluid properties are considered in the simulation. Qualitative transient inspection revealed that the flame undergoes a three-stage development process in the streamwise direction: sparse autoignition kernels in the upstream region, intense ignitions and establishment of a continuous flame surface in the middle region, and massive flamelets in the downstream region. Ignition kernels primarily form in the interior of large-scale shear-driven vortices featuring a low scalar dissipation rate. Probability density function (p.d.f.) analysis further confirmed that these kernels mainly form in the premixed combustion mode and on the fuel-lean side, in contrast to the authors’ previous findings concerning autoignition in a two-dimensional mixing layer. Analysis of the preignition chemistry indicator (i.e. $\textrm {H}_2\textrm {O}_{2}$ radicals) revealed that although the fuel-rich condition has a shorter homogeneous autoignition delay time, it does not exhibit any remarkable preignition chemistry or intense heat release in the upstream or middle regions because of its large-scale flow structure. A volume rendering of the dimensionless Damköhler number ($Da$) reveals the distribution of autoignition spots and propagating flames. The joint p.d.f. of the mixture fraction and $Da$ reveals the transition from sparse ignition to intense ignition and, finally, to flame propagation.

The present paper focuses on the structures and dynamics of flame edges in planar turbulent non-premixed flames bounded with a wall using direct numerical simulation (DNS). The global quenching behaviour was first examined and the flame edges were identified based on the intersections of mixture fraction and OH mass fraction iso-surfaces. For the upper branch of the planar jet flame, it is observed that the structures of flame edges change from tribrachial to monobrachial with increasing scalar dissipation rate. The flame edge speed is negatively correlated with the scalar dissipation rate in regions away from the wall, highlighting the role of turbulent mixing on the flame edge dynamics. During flame–wall interactions, the propagation speed of flame edges is mainly affected by the projection of edge flame normal in the wall-normal direction, i.e. $\boldsymbol {N}_{Z}\boldsymbol {\cdot }\boldsymbol {N}_{wall}$. In particular, the propagation speed increases with increasing $\boldsymbol {N}_{Z}\boldsymbol {\cdot }\boldsymbol {N}_{wall}$ in the near-wall region. The interactions of flame edges and turbulence bounded with a wall are characterized by the alignment between edge flame normal and principal strain rates. The normal of quenching edges has a tendency to align with the most extensive strain rate $\boldsymbol {e}_{1}$ in regions where the heat-release-induced dilatation is dominant over turbulent strain. In contrast, when the heat loss by cold wall effect is large enough to counteract the heat release induced by chemical reactions, turbulent strain is prevalent and the edge flame normal of the quenching edges preferentially aligns with the most compressive strain rate $\boldsymbol {e}_{3}$.

During the last few decades, bed-elevation profiles from radar sounders have been used to quantify bed roughness. Various methods have been employed, such as the ‘two-parameter’ technique that considers vertical and slope irregularities in topography, but they struggle to incorporate roughness at multiple spatial scales leading to a breakdown in their depiction of bed roughness where the relief is most complex. In this article, we describe a new algorithm, analogous to wavelet transformations, to quantify the bed roughness at multiple scales. The ‘Self-Adaptive Two-Parameter’ system calculates the roughness of a bed profile using a frequency-domain method, allowing the extraction of three characteristic factors: (1) slope, (2) skewness and (3) coefficient of variation. The multi-scale roughness is derived by weighted-summing of these frequency-related factors. We use idealized bed elevations to initially validate the algorithm, and then actual bed-elevation data are used to compare the new roughness index with other methods. We show the new technique is an effective tool for quantifying bed roughness from radar data, paving the way for improved continental-wide depictions of bed roughness and incorporation of this information into ice flow models.

Three-dimensional (3-D) measurements of flame stretch are experimentally challenging. In this paper, two-dimensional (2-D) and 3-D measurements of flame stretch and turbulence–flame interactions were examined using direct numerical simulation (DNS) data of turbulent premixed flames, and models to estimate 3-D statistics of flame stretch-related quantities by correcting 2-D measurements were developed. A variety of DNS cases were simulated, including three freely propagating planar flames without a mean shear and a slot-jet flame with a mean shear. The main findings are summarized as follows. First, the mean shear mainly influences the flame orientations. However, it does not change the flame stretch and turbulence–flame interactions qualitatively. The distributions of out-of-plane angle of all cases are nearly isotropic. Second, models were proposed to approximate the 3-D statistics of flame stretch-related quantities using 2-D measurements, the performance of which was verified by comparing modelled and actual 3-D surface averages and probability density functions of tangential strain rate, curvature and displacement velocity. Third, 2-D measurements of flame stretch capture properly the trends of the 3-D results, with flame surface area being produced in low curvature regions and destroyed in highly curved regions. However, the magnitude of flame stretch was under-estimated in 2-D measurements. Finally, 2-D and 3-D turbulence–flame interactions were examined. The flame normal vector is aligned with the most compressive strain rate in both 2-D and 3-D measurements. Meanwhile, the flame normal vector is misaligned (weakly aligned) with the most extensive strain rate in 3-D (2-D) measurements, highlighting the difference in 2-D and 3-D results of turbulence–flame interactions.

Sugarcane brown rust, caused by Puccinia melanocephala, is one of the main diseases of sugarcane in China. The identification and discovery of new resistance genes have important theoretical and practical significance for preventing outbreaks of brown rust and ensuring the sustainable production of sugarcane. To screen for polymorphic simple-sequence repeat (SSR) molecular markers for localization of brown rust resistance genes, we used two populations that are suitable for genetic linkage map construction and mapping of new resistance genes to construct resistant and susceptible genetic pools. We then screened 449 pairs of primers to identify polymorphic SSR markers in the parental lines and the resistant/susceptible genetic pools. The results showed that 25 pairs of primers directed amplification of polymorphic DNA fragments between the parents of the cross combination ‘Yuetang 03-393’ × ‘ROC 24’, and 16 pairs of primers amplified polymorphic fragments between the parents of the cross combination ‘Liucheng 03-1137’ × ‘Dezhe 93-88’. Four pairs of primers (SMC236CG, SCESSR0928, SCESSR0636 and SCESSR2551) amplified polymorphic DNA fragments between the parental lines and the resistant/susceptible genetic pools in ‘Yuetang 03-393’ × ‘ROC 24’. The results of this study will establish a solid foundation for the mapping of new brown rust resistance genes, genetic linkage map construction and the development of closely-associated molecular markers in sugarcane.

In this study, direct numerical simulation of the dispersion and motion of inertial particles in a spatially developing compressible turbulent boundary layer at a Mach number of 2 is performed with the Eulerian–Lagrangian point particle method. Two cases are simulated with different particle diameters (Stokes number) but identical inflow particle numbers. Statistical characteristics and preferential accumulation of particles in the very-near-wall and wake regions are systematically investigated through conditional sampling and mechanism analysis. The results reveal that particle streaks are formed in low-speed regions near the wall because of the influence of dominating ejection events. After normalization with the local minimum particle number density, the particle number density profile reveals a self-similar feature at different streamwise positions. Compared with small particles, large particles are more significantly influenced by turbophoresis and demonstrate stronger preferential accumulation; thus, more large particles are clustered in the near-wall regions and the deviation between the mean velocities of the particle and the fluid increases. With the wall effect, both large and small particles are selectively accumulated in high-vorticity regions in the buffer layer in contrast to turbulence without walls. In comparison with incompressible wall-bounded turbulence, a new mechanism for particle preferential accumulation based on local fluid density is discovered. Large particles are located in low-density regions in the inner zones and high-density regions in the outer zones. Nevertheless, small particles remain located in regions with low fluid density, as illustrated by the mechanism analysis of particle dilatation.

We assessed inheritance of resistance to sugarcane brown rust (Puccinia melanocephala) in selfing F1 populations of wild sugarcane germplasm Erianthus rockii ‘Yundian 95-19’ and E. rockii ‘Yundian 95-20’. We tested parent and selfing F1 individuals for the brown rust resistance gene, Bru1, that has been shown to confer resistance to brown rust in sugarcane. The Bru1 gene was not detected in E. rockii ‘Yundian 95-19’, E. rockii ‘Yundian 95-20’ or their selfing F1 individuals, and we found there was segregation of resistance in the two selfing F1 populations (segregation ratio: 3:1). The results confirmed resistance in E. rockii ‘Yundian 95-19’ and E. rockii ‘Yundian 95-20’ to sugarcane brown rust is controlled by a novel, single dominant gene.

The hydrogen embrittlement of 12Cr2Mo1R(H) steel at different strain rates were investigated after hydrogen precharging for 4 h in a 0.5 M H2SO4 solution with 2 g/L ammonium thiocyanate. Results showed that the embrittlement index increased and gradually reached a relative stable value of about 20% at the strain rate of 5 × 10−5 s−1 with the decrease of strain rates. SEM images depicted small and deep flakes at high strain rates, while flakes grew larger at slow strain rates. Most hydrogen-induced cracks (HICs) were transgranular fracture through lath grain of bainitic ferrite. High strain field surrounds the crack tips, which makes the crack tips of two close and parallel cracks deflect toward each another and even form crack coalescence. The electron backscatter diffraction technique was used to investigate the effects of grain boundaries, recrystallization fraction, kernel average misorientation map, texture component, and coincidence site lattice boundaries on the HIC propagation. High densities of dislocations and strain concentrations were found around the cracks, where grains are highly sensitive to HIC.

Direct numerical simulations of particle-laden flows in a spatially developing turbulent thermal boundary layer over an isothermally heated wall have been performed with realistic fully developed turbulent inflow boundary conditions. To the authors’ best knowledge, this is the first time the effects of inertial solid particles on turbulent flow and heat transfer in a flat-plate turbulent boundary layer have been investigated, using a two-way coupled Eulerian–Lagrangian method. Results indicate that the presence of particles increases the mean streamwise velocity and temperature gradients of the fluid in the near-wall region. As a result, the skin-friction drag and heat transfer are significantly enhanced in the particle-laden flows with respect to the single-phase flow. The near-wall sweep and ejection motions are suppressed by the particles and hence the Reynolds shear stress and wall-normal turbulent heat flux are attenuated, which leads to reductions in the production of the turbulent kinetic energy and temperature fluctuations. In addition, the coherence and spacing of the near-wall velocity and temperature streaky structures are distinctly increased, while the turbulent vortical structures appear to be disorganized under the effect of the particles. Moreover, the intensity of the streamwise vortices decreases monotonically with increasing particle inertia.

A new ternary compound Al5NdNi2 was prepared by melting a stoichiometric mixture of aluminum, neodymium, and nickel in an arc furnace and annealing in vacuum. The crystal structure of Al5NdNi2 was studied by X-ray powder diffraction technique and Rietveld analysis. All diffraction lines of Al5NdNi2 were indexed, and the lattice parameters were refined with an orthorhombic structure type of space group Immm (No.71) using Rietveld analysis program DBWS-9807. The lattice parameters are presented, a = 7.0508(1) Å, b = 9.5690(1) Å, c = 3.9792(1) Å, V = 268.47 Å3, Z = 2, ρ = 4.91 g cm−3, and RIR = 1.23.

In this paper, a systematic investigation of turbulence modulation by particles and its underlying physical mechanisms in decaying compressible isotropic turbulence is performed by using direct numerical simulations with the Eulerian–Lagrangian point-source approach. Particles interact with turbulence through two-way coupling and the initial turbulent Mach number is 1.2. Five simulations with different particle diameters (or initial Stokes numbers, $St_{0}$) are conducted while fixing both their volume fraction and particle densities. The underlying physical mechanisms responsible for turbulence modulation are analysed through investigating the particle motion in the different cases and the transport equations of turbulent kinetic energy, vorticity and dilatation, especially the two-way coupling terms. Our results show that microparticles ($St_{0}\leqslant 0.5$) augment turbulent kinetic energy and the rotational motion of fluid, critical particles ($St_{0}\approx 1.0$) enhance the rotational motion of fluid, and large particles ($St_{0}\geqslant 5.0$) attenuate turbulent kinetic energy and the rotational motion of fluid. The compressibility of the turbulence field is suppressed for all the cases, and the suppression is more significant if the Stokes number of particles is close to 1. The modifications of turbulent kinetic energy, the rotational motion and the compressibility are all related with the particle inertia and distributions, and the suppression of the compressibility is attributed to the preferential concentration and the inertia of particles.

The present study explored the mechanisms of dietary Zn influencing Zn and lipid deposition in the fore- and mid- intestine in yellow catfish Pelteobagrus fulvidraco, and investigated whether the mechanism was intestinal-region dependent. For this purpose, yellow catfish were fed three diets containing Zn levels of 8·83, 19·20 and 146·65 mg Zn/kg, respectively. Growth performance, intestinal TAG and Zn contents as well as activities and mRNA expression of enzymes and genes involved in Zn transport and lipid metabolism in the fore- and mid-intestine were analysed. Dietary Zn increased Zn accumulation as well as activities of Cu-, Zn-superoxide dismutase and ATPase in the fore- and mid-intestine. In the fore-intestine, dietary Zn up-regulated mRNA levels of ZnT1, ZnT5, ZnT7, metallothionein (MT) and metal response element-binding transcription factor-1 (MTF-1), but down-regulated mRNA levels of ZIP4 and ZIP5. In the mid-intestine, dietary Zn up-regulated mRNA levels of ZnT1, ZnT5, ZnT7, MT and MTF-1, but down-regulated mRNA levels of ZIP4 and ZIP5. Dietary Zn reduced TAG content, down-regulated activities of 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6PGD), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), malic enzyme (ME) and fatty acid synthase (FAS) activities, and reduced mRNA levels of 6PGD, G6PD, FAS, PPARγ and sterol-regulator element-binding protein (SREBP-1), but up-regulated mRNA levels of carnitine palmitoyltransferase IA, hormone-sensitive lipase (HSLa), adipose TAG lipase (ATGL) and PPARα in the fore-intestine. In the mid-intestine, dietary Zn reduced TAG content, activities of G6PD, ME, isocitrate dehydrogenase and FAS, down-regulated mRNA levels of 6PGD, G6PD, FAS, acetyl-CoA carboxylase a, PPARγ and SREBP-1, but up-regulated mRNA expression of HSLa, ATGL and PPARγ. The reduction in TAG content following Zn addition was attributable to reduced lipogenesis and increased lipolysis, and similar regulatory mechanisms were observed between the fore- and mid-intestine.

Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii is often used as a traditional medicine in China. In our recent work, we found that the ethanol crude extract of Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii could reduce phytotoxicity of acetochlor on rice. The crude extract of Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii was isolated and purified by activity-guided fractionation. Two coumarins, isopimpinellin and 5-methoxypsoralen (5-MOP) were identified, and their bioactivity was tested in a growth chamber. The results showed that the two coumarins increased herbicide tolerance of rice shoots, and 5-MOP demonstrated better protection than isopimpinellin. The treatment of 5-MOP at 50 g ai ha−1 recovered the shoot height of rice from 42.6% (treated with acetochlor only) to 81.6% of the control treated without acetochlor, whereas the phytocidal activity of acetochlor on barnyardgrass was not impaired by 5-MOP. Further study suggested that 5-MOP increases herbicide tolerance of rice by enhancing the glutathione S-transferase level of activity in rice. Our findings suggest that isopimpinellin and 5-MOP have the potential to be applied as safeners for rice.

The new ternary compound of Al2Cu3Gd was prepared by melting with stoichiometric composition in an electric arc furnace. The X-ray powder diffraction data of Al2Cu3Gd have been collected by the Rigaku Smart Lab X-ray powder diffractometer. The Rietveld refinement method had been used to study the crystal structure of Al2Cu3Gd. The results showed that the Al2Cu3Gd, new compound have the hexagonal structure, space group P6/mmm (No. 191) with a = 5.1822 (1) Å, c = 4.1566 (1) Å, V = 96.67 Å3, Z = 1, and the density is 6.62 g cm−3, and the intensity ratio reference intensity ratio is 1.29.

Direct numerical simulations of particle-laden spatially developing turbulent boundary layers over a flat plate have been performed to investigate the effect of inertial particles on turbulence modulation, using the Eulerian–Lagrangian point-particle approach with two-way coupling. The particles are smaller than the Kolmogorov length scale of the dilute flow, and inter-particle collisions are not considered. The simulation results show that the addition of small solid particles increases the mean streamwise fluid velocity, which in turn leads to a reduction in the boundary layer integral parameters and an increase in the skin-friction drag. These effects become more pronounced as the particle Stokes number and mass loading increase. The streamwise turbulence intensity is slightly enhanced in the close vicinity of the wall but damped in the outer layer. In contrast, the Reynolds stress and the turbulence intensities in the wall-normal and spanwise directions are substantially attenuated across the entire boundary layer, and the levels of attenuation increase monotonically with both particle Stokes number and mass loading. The exchange of kinetic energy between particles and fluid indicates that particle–fluid interactions cause extra energy dissipation, which plays a crucial role in turbulence modulation.

The development of high-order schemes has been mostly concentrated on the limiters and high-order reconstruction techniques. In this paper, the effect of the flux functions on the performance of high-order schemes will be studied. Based on the same WENO reconstruction, two schemes with different flux functions, i.e., the fifth-order WENO method and the WENO-Gas-kinetic scheme (WENO-GKS), will be compared. The fifth-order finite difference WENO-SW scheme is a characteristic variable reconstruction based method which uses the Steger-Warming flux splitting for inviscid terms, the sixth-order central difference for viscous terms, and three stages Runge-Kutta time stepping for the time integration. On the other hand, the finite volume WENO-GKS is a conservative variable reconstruction based method with the same WENO reconstruction. But, it evaluates a time dependent gas distribution function along a cell interface, and updates the flow variables inside each control volume by integrating the flux function along the boundary of the control volume in both space and time. In order to validate the robustness and accuracy of the schemes, both methods are tested under a wide range of flow conditions: vortex propagation, Mach 3 step problem, and the cavity flow at Reynolds number 3200. Our study shows that both WENO-SW and WENO-GKS yield quantitatively similar results and agree with each other very well provided a sufficient grid resolution is used. With the reduction of mesh points, the WENO-GKS behaves to have less numerical dissipation and present more accurate solutions than those from the WENO-SW in all test cases. For the Navier-Stokes equations, since the WENO-GKS couples inviscid and viscous terms in a single flux evaluation, and the WENO-SW uses an operator splitting technique, it appears that the WENO-SW is more sensitive to the WENO reconstruction and boundary treatment. In terms of efficiency, the finite volume WENO-GKS is about 4 times slower than the finite differenceWENO-SW in two dimensional simulations. The current study clearly shows that besides high-order reconstruction, an accurate gas evolution model or flux function in a high-order scheme is also important in the capturing of physical solutions. In a physical flow, the transport, stress deformation, heat conduction, and viscous heating are all coupled in a single gas evolution process. Therefore, it is preferred to develop such a scheme with multi-dimensionality, and unified treatment of inviscid and dissipative terms. A high-order scheme does prefer a high-order gas evolution model. Even with the rapid advances of high-order reconstruction techniques, the first-order dynamics of the Riemann solution becomes the bottleneck for the further development of high-order schemes. In order to avoid the weakness of the low order flux function, the development of high-order schemes relies heavily on the weak solution of the original governing equations for the update of additional degree of freedom, such as the non-conservative gradients of flow variables, which cannot be physically valid in discontinuous regions.

A method for quantitative characterization of a phase's depth distribution is discussed in detail. Both model-independent and model-dependent nonlinear least squares technique methods were developed; in addition, an inverse Laplace transformation method is presented to solve the problem directly in mathematics. The methods can also be used for samples with preferred orientation. Furthermore, the technique is expanded to the technique of computed depth profiling of XRD patterns; then the depth profiles of other structural information that is based on the peak intensity, peak position, and line profile can be determined. A feasibility test was also performed.

SONG (Stellar Observations Network Goup) is a low-cost ground based international collaboration aimed at two cutting edge problems in contemporary astrophysics in the time-domain: 1) Direct diagnostics of the internal structure of stars and 2) looking for and studying extra solar planets, possibly in the habitable zone. The general plan is to set up a network of 1m telescopes uniformly distributed in geographic latitude (in both hemispheres). China jointed the collaboration (initiated by Danish astronomers) at the very beginning. In addition to SONG's original plan (http://song.phys.au.dk), the Chinese team proposed a parallel photometry subnet work in the northern hemisphere, namely 50BiN (50cm Binocular Network, previously known as mini-SONG), to enable a large field photometric capability for the network, therefore maximising the potential of the network platform. The network will be able to produce nearly continuous time series observations of a number of selected objects with high resolution spectroscopy (SONG) and accurate photometry (50BiN), and to produce ultra-high accuracy photometry in dense field to look for micro-lensing events caused by planetary systems. This project has great synergy with Chinese Astronomical activities in Antarctica (Dome A), and other similar networks (e.g. LCOGT). The plan and current status of the project are overviewed in this poster.
