For an abelian extension L/K of number fields, the Equivariant Tamagawa Number Conjecture (ETNC) at s = 0, which is equivalent to the Lifted Root Number Conjecture (LRNC), implies Rubin's Conjecture by work of Burns [3]. We show that, for relative biquadratic extensions L/K satisfying a certain condition on the splitting of places, Rubin's Conjecture in turn implies the ETNC/LRNC. We conclude with some examples.

For a derivation δ of a commutative Noetherian ${\mathbb C}$-algebra A, a homeomorphism is established between the prime spectrum of the Ore extension A[z;δ] and the Poisson prime spectrum of the polynomial algebra A[z] endowed with the Poisson bracket such that {A,A}=0 and {z,a}=δ(a) for all a ∈ A.

We examine the solubility of a diagonal, translation invariant, quadratic equation system in arbitrary (dense) subsets $\mathcal{A}$ ⊂ ℤ and show quantitative bounds on the size of $\mathcal{A}$ if there are no non-trivial solutions. We use the circle method and Roth's density increment argument. Due to a restriction theory approach we can deal with equations in s ≥ 7 variables.

Measure homology was introduced by Thurston (W. P. Thurston, The geometry and topology of 3-manifolds, mimeographed notes (Princeton University Press, Princeton, NJ, 1979)) in order to compute the simplicial volume of hyperbolic manifolds. Berlanga (R. Berlanga, A topologised measure homology, Glasg. Math. J. 50 (2008), 359–369) endowed measure homology with the structure of a graded, locally convex (possibly non-Hausdorff) topological vector space. In this paper we completely characterize Berlanga's topology on measure homology of CW-complexes, showing in particular that it is Hausdorff. This answers a question posed by Berlanga.

Let n be any positive integer and p be any prime. Also, let X be any spectrum and let K(n) denote the nth Morava K-theory spectrum. Then we construct a descent spectral sequence with abutment π∗(LK(n)(X)) and E2-term equal to the continuous cohomology of Gn, the extended Morava stabilizer group, with coefficients in a certain discrete Gn-module that is built from various homotopy fixed point spectra of the Morava module of X. This spectral sequence can be contrasted with the K(n)-local En-Adams spectral sequence for π∗(LK(n)(X)), whose E2-term is not known to always be equal to a continuous cohomology group.

For the mapping class group of 3-manifold with respect to a Heegaard splitting, a simplicial complex is constructed such that its group of automorphisms is identified with the mapping class group.

We introduce the concept of homological Frobenius functors as the natural generalization of Frobenius functors in the setting of triangulated categories, and study their structure in the particular case of the derived categories of those of complexes and modules over a unital associative ring. Tilting complexes (modules) are examples of homological Frobenius complexes (modules). Homological Frobenius functors retain some of the nice properties of Frobenius ones as the ascent theorem for Gorenstein categories. It is shown that homological Frobenius ring homomorphisms are always Frobenius.

Suppose we are given complex manifolds X and Y together with substacks $\mathcal{S}$ and $\mathcal{S}'$ of modules over algebras of formal deformation $\mathcal{A}$ on X and $\mathcal{A}'$ on Y, respectively. Also, suppose we are given a functor Φ from the category of open subsets of X to the category of open subsets of Y together with a functor F of prestacks from $\mathcal{S}$ to $\mathcal{S}'\circ\Phi$. Then we give conditions for the existence of a canonical functor, extension of F to the category of coherent $\mathcal{A}$-modules such that the cohomology associated to the action of the formal parameter $\hbar$ takes values in $\mathcal{S}$. We give an explicit construction and prove that when the initial functor F is exact on each open subset, so is its extension. Our construction permits to extend the functors of inverse image, Fourier transform, specialisation and micro-localisation, nearby and vanishing cycles in the framework of $\mathcal{D}[[\hbar]]$-modules. We also obtain the Cauchy–Kowalewskaia–Kashiwara theorem in the non-characteristic case as well as comparison theorems for regular holonomic $\mathcal{D}[[\hbar]]$-modules and a coherency criterion for proper direct images of good $\mathcal{D}[[\hbar]]$-modules.

For a given (d−1)-dimensional simplicial complex Γ, we denote its h-vector by h(Γ)=(h0(Γ),h1(Γ),. . .,hd(Γ)) and set h−1(Γ)=0. The known Swartz equality implies that if Δ is a (d−1)-dimensional Buchsbaum simplicial complex over a field, then for every 0 ≤ i ≤ d, the inequality ihi(Δ)+(d−i+1)hi−1(Δ) ≥ 0 holds true. In this paper, by using these inequalities, we give a simple proof for a result of Terai (N. Terai, On h-vectors of Buchsbaum Stanley–Reisner rings, Hokkaido Math. J. 25(1) (1996), 137–148) on the h-vectors of Buchsbaum simplicial complexes. We then generalize the Swartz equality (E. Swartz, Lower bounds for h-vectors of k-CM, independence, and broken circuit complexes, SIAM J. Discrete Math. 18(3) (2004/05), 647–661), which in turn leads to a generalization of the above-mentioned inequalities for Cohen–Macaulay simplicial complexes in co-dimension t.

A new family of zerofree region of the Riemann Zeta-function ζ is identified by using Turán's (P. Turán, Eine neue Methode inter Analysis und deren Anwendungen (Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest, Hungary, 1953); Analytic number theory, Proc. Symp. Pure Math., vol. XXIV (Amer. Math. Soc. Providence, RI, 1972)) localization criterion linking zeros of ζ with uniform local suprema of sets of Dirichlet polynomials expanded over the primes. The proof is based on a randomization argument. An estimate for local extrema for some finite families of shifted Dirichlet polynomials is established by preliminary considering their local increment properties by means of Montgomery-Vaughan's variant of Hilbert's inequality. A covering argument combined with Turán's localization criterion allows to conclude.

We consider which integers g can occur as the genus and of a curve defined over a field of characteristic p which admits an automorphism of degree pq, where p and q are distinct primes. This investigation leads us to consider a certain family of three-dimensional Frobenius problems and prove explicit formulas giving their solution in many cases.

A group is called a T-group if all its subnormal subgroups are normal. It is proved here that if G is a periodic (generalized) soluble group in which all subnormal subgroups of infinite rank are normal, then either G is a T-group or it has finite rank. It follows that if G is an arbitrary group whose Fitting subgroup has infinite rank, then G has the property T if and only if all its subnormal subgroups of infinite rank are normal.

In [3] the authors (M. Borodzik and S. Friedl, Unknotting number and classical invariants (preprint 2012)) associated to a knot K ⊂ S3 an invariant nℝ(K), which is defined using the Blanchfield form and which gives a lower bound on the unknotting number. In this paper, we express nℝ(K) in terms of the Levine-Tristram signatures and nullities of K. We also show in the proof that the Blanchfield form for any knot K is diagonalisable over ℝ[t±1].

In this paper, we consider the question about length distortions under quasiconformal mappings with respect to quadratic differential metrics. More precisely, let X and Y be closed Riemann surfaces with genus at least 2, and f: X → Y being a K-quasiconformal mapping. Given two quadratic differential metrics |q1| and |q2| with unit areas on X and Y respectively, whether there exists a constant $\mathcal C$ depending only on K such that $\frac{1}{\mathcal C} l_{q_1} (\gamma) \leq l_{q_2} (f(\gamma)) \leq \mathcal C l_{q_1} (\gamma)$ holds for any simple closed curve γ ⊂ X. Here lqi(α) denotes the infimum of the lengths of curves in the homotopy class of α with respect to the metric |qi|, i = 1, 2. We give positive answers to this question, including the aspects that the desired constant ${\mathcal C}$ explicitly depends on q1, q2 and K, and that the constant $\mathcal C$ is universal for all the quantities involved.

We study orthogonal projections of generic embedded hypersurfaces in ℝ4 with boundary to 2-spaces. Therefore, we classify simple map germs from ℝ3 to the plane of codimension less than or equal to 4 with the source containing a distinguished plane which is preserved by coordinate changes. We also go into some detail on their geometrical properties in order to recognize the cases of codimension less than or equal to 1.

A natural class of ideals, almost isometric ideals, of Banach spaces is defined and studied. The motivation for working with this class of subspaces is our observation that they inherit diameter 2 properties and the Daugavet property. Lindenstrauss spaces are known to be the class of Banach spaces that are ideals in every superspace; we show that being an almost isometric ideal in every superspace characterizes the class of Gurariy spaces.

For a formation $\mathfrak F$, a subgroup M of a finite group G is said to be $\mathfrak F$-pronormal in G if for each g ∈ G, there exists x ∈ 〈U,Ug〉$\mathfrak F$ such that Ux = Ug. Let f be a subgroup embedding functor such that f(G) contains the set of normal subgroups of G and is contained in the set of Sylow-permutable subgroups of G for every finite group G. Given such an f, let fT denote the class of finite groups in which f(G) is the set of subnormal subgroups of G; this is the class of all finite groups G in which to be in f(G) is a transitive relation in G. A subgroup M of a finite group G is said to be $\mathfrak F$-normal in G if G/CoreG(M) belongs to $\mathfrak F$. A subgroup U of a finite group G is called K-$\mathfrak F$-subnormal in G if either U = G or there exist subgroups U = U0 ≤ U1 ≤ . . . ≤ Un = G such that Ui–1 is either normal or $\mathfrak F$-normal in Ui, for i = 1,2, …, n. We call a finite group G an $fT_{\mathfrak F}$-group if every K-$\mathfrak F$-subnormal subgroup of G is in f(G). In this paper, we analyse for certain formations $\mathfrak F$ the structure of $fT_{\mathfrak F}$-groups. We pay special attention to the $\mathfrak F$-pronormal subgroups in this analysis.

We construct an algebraic almost closed 1-form with zero scheme not expressible (even locally) as the critical locus of a holomorphic function on a non-singular variety. The result answers a question of Behrend–Fantechi. We correct here an error in our paper (D. Maulik, R Pandharipande and R. P. Thomas, Curves on K3 surfaces and modular forms, J. Topol.3 (2010) 937–996. arXiv:1001.2719v3), where an incorrect construction with the same claimed properties was proposed.

In this paper we investigate the nature of family of pairs of separable Banach spaces (X, Y) such that $\mathcal{K}(X,Y)$ is complemented in $\mathcal{L}(X,Y)$. It is proved that the family of pairs (X,Y) of separable Banach spaces such that $\mathcal{K}(X,Y)$ is complemented in $\mathcal{L}(X,Y)$ is not Borel, endowed with the Effros–Borel structure.

We provide conditions under which a Riesz operator defined on a Banach space is a finite rank operator.
