Summary
Missions to Mercury are challenging because of the planet’s proximity to the Sun, as close as one-third the mean Earth–Sun distance. This location imparts a stressing thermal environment because of intense solar illumination, as well as major propulsion requirements because of the energy gained by a spacecraft descending from Earth into the Sun’s gravity well. Although Mercury has been a primary exploration target since the 1960s, it was not until the discovery of gravity-assist trajectories to Mercury that robotic exploration became feasible. The Mariner 10 flybys in the 1970s revealed many of Mercury's characteristics and whetted the appetite of the science community for an orbiter mission. Enabled by multiple planetary gravity assists and innovations in spacecraft and instrumentation, MESSENGER successfully orbited Mercury from 2011 into 2015 and revolutionized our understanding of the planet. New questions raised by the MESSENGER results motivate the much larger, dual-spacecraft BepiColombo mission, scheduled to arrive at Mercury in late 2025. Even after BepiColombo, many key questions central to understanding Mercury’s formation will likely require a Mercury lander mission, potentially enabled by sufficiently large launch vehicles. The return of samples from Mercury to Earth may long remain an aspiration for future generations of scientists and engineers.

Background
It is still thought by some that a common wall is to be found in the normal heart between the attachments of the caval and pulmonary veins, with absence of this wall underscoring the presence of sinus venosus defects. Recent findings using episcopic microscopy in developing mice have shown the deficiencies of this notion. Understanding that the superior rim of the oval fossa is a fold, rather than a true septum, which can be distorted in the presence of partially anomalous pulmonary venous drainage, has provided an alternative explanation for the morphogenesis of sinus venosus defects.
MethodsWe reviewed our experience with patients suspected of having a sinus venosus defect from August, 2011, through October, 2015, analysing the findings in light of the current hypotheses used to explain the development of the defects, along with correlations made by inspection of autopsy specimens.
ResultsWe evaluated findings from 16 patients, with a mean age of 7.7 years, ranging from 2.7 to 15 years. Of the group, 13 were ultimately diagnosed with a superior sinus venosus defect, two with an inferior defect, and one with isolated anomalous pulmonary venous connection in the absence of an interatrial communication. Initially, two patients were thought to have oval fossa defects, one from each subtype, but were correctly diagnosed following cardiac magnetic resonance interrogation. Anomalous pulmonary venous connections were present in all cases.
ConclusionAppreciation of the changes occurring during normal cardiac development helps in understanding the anatomical substrate underscoring the spectrum of sinus venosus defects. The lesions are veno-venous connections due to partially anomalous pulmonary venous connections, producing interatrial communications outside the confines of the interatrial septum.

The use of both tablet devices and social media is increasingly popular among the American public. With this in mind, this article discusses our use of the technologies in a course about the 2012 US election campaign. We provided all students in our course with an iPad, created a private Facebook group, and devised a variety of approaches for integrating the technologies into the course. Surveys at the beginning and the end of the course showed that students frequently used their iPad for political and instructional purposes and that their self-confidence in using tablet devices, apps, and social media for political purposes increased during the semester. Open-ended responses and our own observations also suggest that use of the technologies fostered active online conversations about course material. In particular, use of the iPad and the Facebook group in combination during in-class video screenings, guest speakers, and debates facilitated lively, creative interactions among students and between students and instructors.

The time course of brain activation prior to onset of auditory/ verbal hallucinations was characterised using functional magnetic resonance imaging in six dextral patients with schizophrenia. Composite maps of pre-hallucination periods revealed activation in the left anterior insula and in the right middle temporal gyrus, partially replicating two previous case reports, as well as deactivation in the anterior cingulate and parahippocampal gyri. These findings may reflect brain events that trigger or increase vulnerability to auditory/verbal hallucinations.

Sinus venosus defects are relatively uncommon forms of interatrial communication in which one of the caval veins has a biatrial connection, and partial anomalous pulmonary venous connections are the rule. The variety related to the inferior caval vein is much the rarer of the two forms, and here the defect is posterior and inferiorly placed. To determine whether an inferior sinus venosus defect could be identified preoperatively, we reviewed retrospectively the available echocardiograms and cineangiograms of the five patients with an inferior sinus venosus defect who underwent surgical repair between January 1983 and December 1991. A cross-sectional echocardiogram had been performed preoperatively in four of these patients, but the correct diagnosis had been made in only one case. Retrospective study, however, showed that the extent of the true atrial septum and the nature of the junction of the inferior caval vein with the atriums could be evaluated from the subcostal position in three of these four patients. Each of the three had an interatrial communication located posteriorly and inferiorly adjacent to the atrial connection of the inferior caval vein, along with abnormally connected right pulmonary veins. The oval fossa was intact and the coronary sinus was normal in all. Cardiac catheterization had been performed in three of the five patients. Anomalous return of right pulmonary veins was noted in each, and the posterior and inferior location of the interatrial communication was evident in two. An interatrial communication adjacent to the atrial connection of the inferior caval vein, along with anomalous connection of the right-sided pulmonary veins, are the diagnostic features of the inferior variety of sinus venosus defects. These features can be demonstrated by cross-sectional echocardiography from the subcostal position.
