Hairy buttercup and cutleaf evening primrose are winter annual weeds that have become more problematic for winter wheat growers in the southern Great Plains and the midsouthern United States in recent years. Little research exists on which to base recommendations for controlling hairy buttercup in wheat, and little research has been published on cutleaf evening primrose control in recent years. With growing concerns of increased herbicide resistance among winter annual weeds, incorporating new herbicide sites of action has become necessary. The objective of this study was to assess halauxifen-methyl as a novel herbicide to control these two problematic winter annual broadleaf weeds in winter wheat in Mississippi and Oklahoma. Studies were conducted across four site-years in Mississippi and one site-year in Oklahoma comparing 15 herbicide programs with and without halauxifen-methyl. Hairy buttercup and cutleaf evening-primrose control was the greatest when a synthetic auxin was combined with an acetolactate synthase–inhibiting herbicide. Treatments including halauxifen-methyl resulted in the greatest control of hairy buttercup, whereas a synthetic auxin herbicide plus chlorsulfuron and metsulfuron resulted in the greatest control of cutleaf evening primrose. Halauxifen-methyl is an effective addition for control of winter annual broadleaf weeds like hairy buttercup and cutleaf evening primrose in winter wheat.

There is increasing demand for the implementation of effects-based monitoring and surveillance (EBMS) approaches in the Great Lakes Basin to complement traditional chemical monitoring. Herein, we describe an ongoing multiagency effort to develop and implement EBMS tools, particularly with regard to monitoring potentially toxic chemicals and assessing Areas of Concern (AOCs), as envisioned by the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI). Our strategy includes use of both targeted and open-ended/discovery techniques, as appropriate to the amount of information available, to guide a priori end point and/or assay selection. Specifically, a combination of in vivo and in vitro tools is employed by using both wild and caged fish (in vivo), and a variety of receptor- and cell-based assays (in vitro). We employ a work flow that progressively emphasizes in vitro tools for long-term or high-intensity monitoring because of their greater practicality (e.g., lower cost, labor) and relying on in vivo assays for initial surveillance and verification. Our strategy takes advantage of the strengths of a diversity of tools, balancing the depth, breadth, and specificity of information they provide against their costs, transferability, and practicality. Finally, a series of illustrative scenarios is examined that align EBMS options with management goals to illustrate the adaptability and scaling of EBMS approaches and how they can be used in management decisions.

While the summit of the Antarctic Plateau has long been expected to harbor the best ground-based sites for terahertz (THz) frequency astronomical investigations, it is only recently that direct observations of exceptional THz atmospheric transmission and stability have been obtained. These observations, in combination with recent technological advancements in astronomical instrumentation and autonomous field platforms, make the recognition and realization of terahertz observatories on the high plateau feasible and timely. Here, we will explore the context of terahertz astronomy in the era of Herschel, and the crucial role that observatories on the Antarctic Plateau can play. We explore the important scientific questions to which observations from this unique environment may be most productively applied. We examine the importance and complementarity of Antarctic THz astronomy in the light of contemporary facilities such as ALMA, CCAT, SOFIA and (U)LDB ballooning. Finally, building from the roots of THz facilities in Antarctica to present efforts, we broadly highlight future facilities that will exploit the unique advantages of the Polar Plateau and provide a meaningful, lasting astrophysical legacy.

We have successfully grown SrTiO3 films on LaAlO3 and MgO substrates up to 2” in diameter using the deposition technique of reactive coevaporation. We have explored a wide range of deposition temperatures, oxygen pocket pressures, and compositions in order to determine the optimal growth process window. X-ray diffraction analyses indicate that the process window for growth on MgO substrates is narrower than for LaAlO3 substrates. Dielectric property measurements show that samples near stoichiometry have higher tunability, but their peak loss tangents are also high (∼0.02). The slightly Sr-poor samples (46-48 at.%) show a reduced loss tangent (<0.01) while maintaining an acceptable tunability (∼50%) at an average electric field of 1.7 V/μm.

Summary
GENERAL INTRODUCTION
The haemic system can be visualised as a dynamic three compartment model viz the bone marrow (generative) compartment, the vascular/lymphatic (distributive) compartment and the peripheral organ compartment. This is further sub-divided into cellular subsets comprising erythrocyte, platelet, polymorphonuclear, lymphocyte and monocyte. These cell lineages are defined on morphological, functional and clonogenic characteristics. The relationship of these cell lines to the three compartment model is shown in Figure 1. In addition, the micro-environment of the bone marrow compartment, necessary for normal haemopoiesis, and the haemostatic mechanisms of the peripheral blood compartment are considered parts of the haemic system. Toxic substances exert their effects on the haemic system in many ways. Some may affect only one cell line in one compartment, whilst others may affect all cell lines in all Compartments or alternatively all cell lines in one compartment.
The principle compartments and cellular subsets in which haematotoxicity has been demonstrated by a range of compounds are described below. Since the breadth of scientific and technical information available far exceeds the scope of a single Chapter, experimental methodology has been reviewed in detail for erythrocyte haemolysis and platelet aggregation tests only. The reader is referred to recent reviews cited in the bibliography for details of the many other various in vitro techniques available for the evaluation of the haemic system.
