The effectiveness of single and repeated annual preharvest glyphosate applications (1 to 2 wk before crop harvest) to reduce Canada thistle populations was evaluated in field experiments near Bezanson, AB, Scott, SK, and St. Albert, AB. Single applications of glyphosate at 0.45 to 1.8 kg/ha at Bezanson and St. Albert reduced Canada thistle shoot density by more than 75% but in the three experiments at Scott 1.8 kg/ha was required to consistently obtain a similar reduction. Four consecutive, annual applications of glyphosate at 0.45 kg/ha or more did not eliminate Canada thistle but reduced shoot densities by more than 98% at Bezanson. At Scott, similar reductions occurred in two of three sites following two consecutive, annual preharvest applications of glyphosate at the same rates. In the third Scott site the 1.8 kg/ha rate of glyphosate provided a similar reduction but lower rates did not. At Bezanson, barley yields following the first, second, and third applications of glyphosate at 0.45 kg/ha or more were 14% greater than check plots where MCPA was applied in the spring. Yields of wheat seeded 1 yr after a single application of glyphosate at St. Albert were 26% greater than from unsprayed checks. Barley yields seeded 1 yr after each glyphosate application at Scott were not affected because Canada thistle populations were sparse.

Glyphosate, alone and in combination with other herbicides or additives, was evaluated as a spot or shielded treatment for the control of silverleaf nightshade in cotton in three experiments over four years. Glyphosate used at 10.8 g ae/L in 1985 on dryland cotton controlled 81 to 98% of the silverleaf nightshade, but cotton lint yields were reduced by all treatments compared to the weed-free check. Glyphosate used at 7.2 g ae/L in 1986 on irrigated cotton controlled 6 to 83% of the silverleaf nightshade, and lint yields were reduced only when multiple spot applications were made. Spot applications of glyphosate were effective for silverleaf nightshade control when applied 7 wk after crop emergence in 1988. Weed control and cotton injury were lower with shielded applications than spot applications. In 1989, retreatments during a season or the next year resulted in 95% or greater silverleaf nightshade control. Cotton yield increases from herbicide treatment were not observed in 1988; however, yield increases were observed in 1989 when spot treatments were applied to the more successful 1988 plots.

Winter wheat grain contaminated with jointed goatgrass joints is often discounted as much as 20% by grain buyers. A mail survey to Nebraska farmers in 1984 identified jointed goatgrass as one of the ten worst weed problems in winter wheat, but a field survey to the same area in 1986 found it in less than 1% of surveyed fields. The objective of this survey was to map the geographic distribution and severity of jointed goatgrass contaminating winter wheat grain in western Nebraska. Jointed goatgrass was found in 25, 29, and 20% of all wheat samples collected in 1990, 1991, and 1992, respectively. Nebraska counties bordering Colorado were found to have the highest percentage of wheat samples contaminated with jointed goatgrass joints, ranging from 23% in Cheyenne county in 1992 to 61% in Keith county in 1991.

Various mechanical plus chemical weed control systems for dry bean production were evaluated at Carrington, ND and Crookston and Staples, MN during 1991 and 1992. A dozen tillage plus herbicide weed control systems are available to growers that can provide selective and effective weed control in dry beans without reliance on chloramben—a standard herbicide on dry beans that has been lost. Dry bean yields were similar with low or high level tillage treatments because most of the herbicide treatments with one cultivation gave adequate weed control and any additional tillage did not improve weed control. Kidney bean yields and prices were greater than either pinto or navy beans so the net returns (bean market value minus production costs) were much greater for kidney bean production. Dry bean producers in the North Central part of the U.S. have at their disposal dependable mechanical plus chemical weed control systems, and their market value has been sufficient to make dry bean production very economical in this region.

Downy brome control in winter wheat is often inadequate. The effects of three crop rotations and two tillage intensities on downy brome populations and associated crop yields were determined in an experiment at Lethbridge, Alberta from 1987 to 1993. Downy brome densities in continuous winter wheat increased from 24 to 970 plants/m2 between 1988 and 1993; and were often higher with zero tillage. Inclusion of fallow or spring canola in rotation with winter wheat suppressed downy brome densities to less than 55 and 100 plants/m2, respectively, over the six years. In continuous winter wheat, yields decreased as downy brome densities increased progressively over years, indicating that monoculture winter wheat production will not be viable in regions where downy brome is prevalent unless effective herbicides are developed. In the more arid areas of the Canadian prairies, a winter wheat-fallow rotation may be most suitable but in higher precipitation areas, a winter wheat-canola rotation is a viable alternative. Crop rotation is a key component of an improved management system for control of downy brome.

In field studies effective dogfennel control was obtained with glyphosate, dicamba + 2,4-D, triclopyr + 2,4-D, and fluroxypyr at rates of 1.68, 0.44 + 1.25, 0.56 + 1.12, and 0.28 kg ai/ha, respectively, applied after dogfennel was 75 cm tall. Mowing alone reduced dogfennel regrowth by 81% and when combined with dicamba + 2,4-D or triclopyr + 2,4-D regrowth was reduced over 94%. Triclopyr, dichlorprop, and sulfometuron also controlled dogfennel greater than 90% but metsulfuron did not.

Field studies were conducted from 1987 through 1990 on Sharkey clay to determine effect of weed control treatment (WTRT) on yield and net return from soybean grown with no irrigation (NI) or irrigation (I) during reproductive development. Weed control treatments were: 1) PRE glyphosate plus metribuzin plus metolachlor or pendimethalin, followed by POST bentazon plus acifluorfen or 2,4-DB plus linuron (high WTRT); 2) PRE glyphosate at a rate to kill existing weeds at planting (medium WTRT); or 3) PRE paraquat at a rate to desiccate but not necessarily kill existing weeds at planting (low WTRT). POST cultivation was used in all treatments. Weed ground cover in the high, medium, and low WTRT's was composed of annual grass and moderately competitive broadleaf species, and averaged 7, 25, and 49%, respectively, at harvest in 1990. Yield declined with decreasing weed control in the I treatment after the first year, but average net returns from the high and medium WTRT's were not different, and both exceeded average returns from the low WTRT. Yields from the high and medium WTRT's in the NI treatment were not different, and both exceeded yield from the low WTRT. Average net returns from the medium WTRT were greater than those from the high and low WTRT's in all years. Yield increase from irrigation and difference in average net returns between I and NI declined with decreasing weed control.

This study characterized the emergence pattern of a weed community of 16 species between April 1 and August 31 over a 7-yr period. Weed seedlings were counted weekly in quadrats established in winter wheat stubble within no-till and conventional-till production systems. Weed emergence showed two peaks, the first between April 25 and May 9, and the second between May 30 and June 13. Tillage did not affect the weed community emergence pattern. Knowledge of weed community emergence pattern in conjunction with crop simulation models could be used to suggest cultural practices such as optimal planting dates that favor a crop over weeds, and possibly reduce herbicide use for within-crop weed control.

Sicklepod control mid-season in cultivated soybean was higher when imazaquin plus AC 263,222 or AC 263,222 alone was applied POST following pendimethalin plus imazaquin PPI compared with only the PPI treatment. Pendimethalin plus imazaquin PPI followed by imazaquin plus AC 263,222 at 36 + 18 g ai/ha or followed by AC 263,222 at 18 g ai/ha with cultivation controlled sicklepod equal to pendimethalin PPI followed by imazaquin plus AC 263,222 at 71 + 18 g ai/ha or followed by a sequential application of AC 263,222 at 13 g ai/ha early POST followed by 9 g ai/ha late POST. Control with these treatments was no higher than for the standard of pendimethalin plus metribuzin PPI followed by chlorimuron POST at 9 g ai/ha, which controlled 86% sicklepod. Averaged across herbicide treatments, cultivation reduced percent sicklepod seed in harvested soybean samples 33% and increased soybean yield 19% compared with no cultivation. Soybean yield was highest for the chlorimuron standard and greater than that for the other treatments when averaged across cultivation treatments.

The sensitivities of tobacco, tomato, pepper, and cucumber seedlings to an aquatic herbicide, fluridone, were examined in growth chamber and greenhouse studies. New leaves of tobacco seedlings became chlorotic after 6-d exposure to fluridone concentrations of 5 μg/L or greater in hydroponic float culture, and dry weights were significantly reduced at 100 μg/L or greater. When treated only once at the beginning of a 2-wk evaluation period, all crops except cucumber exhibited injury symptoms at 100 μg/L. When grown in sand, pepper and tomato were injured at 25 μg/L; tobacco injury occurred at 10 μg/L. Dry weights of pepper, tobacco, and tomato seedlings decreased significantly at 250, 50, and 250 μg/L, respectively, on potting mix; effects on dry weights were not significant for plants on sand. Cucumber was injured by treatment at 100 μg/L or greater in sand, but there were no effects on dry weights in either sand or potting mix. When treated three times weekly for 2 wk with fluridone, pepper, tobacco, and tomato grown in potting mix were injured by 50, 25, and 100 μg/L; when grown in sand, injury occurred at 10, 5, and 10 μg/L, respectively. Dry weights of pepper, tobacco, and tomato were reduced by 50,50, and 100 μg/L, respectively, in potting mix; effects on dry weights were not significant for plants in sand. Cucumber seedlings were damaged by 250 μg/L or higher on potting mix and 100 μg/L or higher on sand, but there were no effects on dry weights regardless of substrate. Threshold injury levels for plants grown in potting mix to the second true leaf stage and then treated three times weekly were 25 μg/L for pepper and tobacco and 50 μg/L for tomato; dry weights were significantly reduced in pepper at 25 μg/L and in tobacco and tomato at 50 μg/L. Cucumber seedlings were not injured by any treatment in this test.

In growth chamber research, infection by Puccinia punctiformis, a rust fungus, reduced flowering and vegetative reproduction in Canada thistle. Disease symptoms were greatest when Canada thistle roots were stored at 5, 10, or 15 C following inoculation. Exposure of roots to different temperatures before inoculation did not affect disease. All Canada thistle clones tested, regardless of gender became diseased although there were differences in susceptibility to P. punctiformis.

Interference between itchgrass and soybean was evaluated over two years using area-of-influence procedures. Soybean seed weight within 20 cm of the weed was reduced 15 to 21%. In the first year, seed weight reduction of 9% was detected at a distance of 40 to 60 cm from the weed. Weight reductions were attributed to decreases in seed number of 12 to 22% within 40 cm of the weed compared with the 140 to 160 cm control area. Itchgrass interference increased soybean height within 40 cm of the weed, but soybean canopy width was generally unaffected. Soybean interference did not affect height of itchgrass plants, but did reduce weed stem numbers 89 to 94% when compared with weeds growing alone. With interference of 8 wk or less, both itchgrass green and dry weights were similar when weeds were growing alone or within the soybean row. Green and dry weights were reduced approximately 80% when itchgrass was in competition with soybean for 10 wk.

Experiments were conducted to determine the efficacy of imidazolinone and sulfonylurea herbicides applied alone or in combination to control leafy spurge. Imazapyr (840 g ai/ha), imazethapyr (140 g/ha), sulfometuron (100 g/ha), and chlorsulfuron (20 g/ha) were applied in the fall on rangeland sites near Ainsworth and Columbus, NE. Imidazolinone and sulfonylurea herbicide combinations did not improve leafy spurge control nor affect forage grass yields when compared with herbicides applied alone. Imazapyr and sulfometuron were the most efficacious, providing greater than 80% leafy spurge control 9 mo after treatment (MAT). Imazethapyr provided 80% control of leafy spurge 9 MAT when applied to a coarse textured, low organic matter soil. In contrast, leafy spurge control was only 15% when imazethapyr was applied to a fine textured soil. Chlorsulfuron did not control leafy spurge, regardless of site characteristics. Imazapyr reduced perennial grass yields by more than 60%.

The influence of green kyllinga and white kyllinga on common bermudagrass growth was compared by planting one to three green or white kyllinga rhizomes with two bermudagrass stolons. White kyllinga reduced bermudagrass shoot fresh weight to 56% of the control, but green kyllinga did not reduce bermudagrass shoot fresh weight significantly. Increased planting densities of both kyllinga species linearly increased kyllinga shoot fresh weight and decreased bermudagrass shoot fresh weight similarly. White kyllinga produced more leaf fresh weight, leaf area, and roots and rhizomes than green kyllinga, which produced more shoots and inflorescences.

The repeated use of sulfonylurea (SU) herbicides to control broadleaf weeds in wheat fields and right-of-ways has selected for herbicide-resistant Russian thistle populations. A survey was conducted in 1991 and 1992 to ascertain the relative occurrence of SU-resistant Russian thistle in eastern Washington state. The 55 574 km2 survey area was divided into 149 equal sample areas. All sample areas were surveyed for Russian thistle and seed was collected from plants in 86 sample areas. No Russian thistle was found in the center of the remaining 63 sample areas. Seeds were collected, by plant, from 30 plants at each site. Site samples were tested in the greenhouse for resistance or susceptibility to chlorsulfuron. Populations that were either homogeneous or heterogeneous for chlorsulfuron-resistance were found in 70% of the sample areas and all of the plants were susceptible in 30% of the sample areas.

Field studies were conducted at Tifton, GA and Gainesville, FL to quantify the phytotoxicity of endothall formulation, rate, and time of application on peanut in a weed-free experiment. Peanut treated with mono (N,N-dimethylalkylamine) salt of endothall (DMAA endothall) were more necrotic than those treated with dipotassium salt of endothall (DP endothall), though necrosis was temporary. Injury from DMAA endothall at rates of 0.6 to 1.1 kg ai/ha was similar to the standard treatment of bentazon plus paraquat for most parameters. Peanut treated with the highest rate of DMAA endothall (4.5 kg/ha) were more necrotic and took longer to recover than lower rates. The highest rate of DP endothall (4.5 kg ai/ha) stunted peanut more than any DMAA endothall treatment. However, lower rates of DP endothall (0.6 to 2.2 kg/ha) were generally less injurious than DMAA endothall at equivalent rates. Peanut yields were not affected by either formulation of endothall at 0.6 to 1.1 kg/ha, applied from vegetative emergence through 4 wk after emergence.

Commercially available cabinet sprayers are not well suited for making low volume applications (<30 L/ha) of herbicides to woody forest species that can be up to 1.5 m tall. A simple, inexpensive laboratory sprayer that overcomes some limitations of commercial cabinet sprays can be built from materials readily available at local building and electronic suppliers. The only specialized equipment required is a positive displacement pump and a rotary disk atomizer. The atomizer is attached to the end of a variable height arm mounted on a laboratory cart. A positive displacement pump ensures controlled flow. The operator pushes the cart along a metal rub rail which keeps the cart tracking in a straight line. Travel speed is regulated by the operator following a marker on a clothesline-like loop of fishing line and is driven by a variable-speed drill attached to a variable voltage power supply.

Laboratory, greenhouse, and field experiments were conducted at the Lacombe Research Station to determine if CCC, ethephon, or CCC/ethephon had direct activity on quackgrass rhizome buds, and to determine if foliar applications of CCC/ethephon could predispose quackgrass to more effective control with sethoxydim. CCC, ethephon, and CCC/ethephon had growth regulating effects on the axillary buds and the apex of detached quackgrass rhizomes. CCC increased rhizome bud sprouting on rhizomes with the apex excised, but not on rhizomes with an intact apex. Ethephon or CCC/ethephon inhibited bud sprouting on rhizomes with an intact or excised apex. CCC/ethephon, but not CCC or ethephon alone, increased rhizome elongation on rhizomes with intact apices. In the greenhouse, pretreatments of CCC/ethephon increased sethoxydim activity on quackgrass rhizome buds and caused lower shoot emergence from one-bud rhizome segments. Results of field experiments were less consistent than those in the greenhouse. However, sometimes CCC or CCC/ethephon pretreatments resulted in increased quackgrass control in the field with sethoxydim.

Greenhouse and laboratory studies were conducted to evaluate the effects of rye residues on germination and growth of three triazine-resistant weed species, barnyardgrass, willowherb, and horseweed. Soil containing rye roots was used to determine rye residue influence on seed germination. Willowherb and horseweed germination was inhibited up to 50% with the highest rate of rye, but there was no inhibition of barnyardgrass germination. Aqueous extracts of rye shoot tissue inhibited incubator germination of horseweed and willowherb, but did not significantly influence barnyardgrass germination. Although there were no germination differences between the susceptible and resistant biotypes, both were totally inhibited when a 5% w/v solution was used. Growth inhibition of the selected weeds was evaluated using rye root residues in soil. All combinations of biotypes, species, and rye seeding rates showed significant growth inhibition.

Redroot pigweed is a major weed worldwide. Increasing emphasis on modeling physiological processes of weeds for use in weed control decision support systems requires a knowledge of the response of weeds to resource levels and environmental conditions. The purpose of this study was to determine functional relationships for carbon exchange rate (CER) and transpiration based on photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) and temperature from measurements made on field-grown redroot pigweed. Measurements were made using a portable photosynthesis system on four dates. An equation that had the form of a power function on PPFD and a quadratic polynomial on temperature was fit to the data. The equation fit the measured CER data better than the measured transpiration data. The equations should be useful in modeling the physiological processes of pigweed within crop canopies.
