Aminocyclopyrachlor will control a variety of invasive weeds but may injure sensitive plant species if seeded into treated soil too soon after application. Aminocyclopyrachlor 50% dissipation time (DT50) ranged from 3 to > 112 d in four soils from the Northern Great Plains. The DT50 was dependent on several factors including soil type, moisture content, and temperature. Across four different soil textures, aminocyclopyrachlor dissipation generally increased as soil moisture content increased, but moisture had less of an impact in sandy soils. Aminocyclopyrachlor dissipation also increased as temperature increased in the four soils. The most rapid dissipation occurred in soils with higher clay content, which also had the highest organic matter content of the soils evaluated, and an average DT50 of less than 20 d. Seeding sensitive pasture, range, or crop species after aminocyclopyrachlor applications should be done with caution since the herbicide has potential for long persistence in the soil.

Field research was conducted in 2010 and 2011 to investigate the efficacy of herbicides for dallisgrass control when applied at various growing (GDD) or cooling degree day (CDD) –based application timings. Herbicide treatments included fluazifop-p-butyl (fluazifop; 105 g ai ha−1), mesotrione (280 g ai ha−1), tembotrione (92 g ai ha−1), topramezone (37 g ai ha−1), and tank mixtures of fluazifop plus mesotrione, tembotrione, or topramezone. Herbicide treatments were applied at either 75, 175, 375, 775 GDD, or 5 CDD. Treated plots were subjected to three tall fescue interseeding regimes: no seeding, seeding in spring, or seeding in fall (0, 353, and 353 kg pure live seed ha−1, respectively). In 2010, dallisgrass control from fluazifop applied at 75, 375, and 775 GDD was poor (< 50%) by 52 wk after treatment (WAT); in 2011, control from fluazifop application at these timings was higher (62 to 72%). When applied at 175 GDD or 5 CDD in 2010 and 2011, dallisgrass control from fluazifop ranged from 79 to 93% at 52 WAT. The addition of mesotrione, tembotrione, or topramezone to fluazifop did not affect dallisgrass control at any application timing, and control provided by these herbicides alone was low (< 65%). Interseeding tall fescue in the fall improved dallisgrass control from herbicides applied at 75 GDD in 2010 and 175, 375, and 775 GDD at 52 WAT in both years. Results suggest that timing of fluazifop applications at 175 GDD and 5 CDD enhances dallisgrass control.

Whole-plant bioassays using sugar beet, lettuce, cucumber, green bean, pea, and soybean as test crops were used to detect mesotrione residues in the soil. The test crops were planted in soil treated with mesotrione in the field the previous year at rates of 0 to 560 g ai ha−1 and in nontreated soil from the same field, with mesotrione added at concentrations of 0 to 320 μg kg−1. Experiments were conducted in the greenhouse for a 21-d period. Values for the dose giving a 50% response (I50) were predicted using a log-logistic nonlinear regression model. I50 values (mean ± SE) of 8.6 ± 1.8, 14.9 ± 2.0, 29.8 ± 11.0, 41.6 ± 7.3, 52.9 ± 6.4, and 67.9 ± 30.3 g ai ha−1 for sugar beet, lettuce, green bean, cucumber, pea, and soybean, respectively, indicate that these crops were effective bioassay test species for quantifying mesotrione residues. A greenhouse bioassay was a simple and sensitive tool to detect mesotrione at concentrations of less than 1.0 μg kg−1 with sugar beet and lettuce being the most sensitive test species. The I50 values for soil treated with known concentrations of mesotrione were lower than for field soil treated with mesotrione the previous year. Knowing the level of mesotrione residues in the soil, growers have flexibility in crop rotations following mesotrione use on corn. Growers can use this information to minimize risk of crop injury by choosing appropriate rotation crops that suffer little or no yield reduction.

As the amount of methyl bromide approved for use in Florida strawberry diminishes, growers are faced with a forced transition to alternative fumigants. Many of these methyl bromide alternatives have been associated with reductions in weed control, requiring additional but complementary measures. POST herbicide options for annual strawberry are limited, resulting in significant portions of the strawberry acreage in Florida being hand-weeded when troublesome weeds escape conventional control methods. Strawberry has shown acceptable tolerance to clopyralid in other areas and production systems; however, its integration into the Florida production system and ramifications of applications during fruiting warrants further research. Eight trials were conducted, with three common strawberry cultivars grown in West Central Florida subjected to POST spray and drip-tape-injected applications of clopyralid. Formation of new strawberry leaves was not affected by clopyralid application, except for a reduction in new leaves of the cultivar ‘Strawberry Festival' at the highest rate of application of 261 g ae ha−1 in comparison with the nontreated control. Strawberry leaf malformation was best explained by an exponential growth equation, whereas marketable yield followed the trend of a Weibull peak. At the maximum labeled rate (66 g ha−1), leaf malformation was less than 5% for all cultivars tested, and marketable yield was estimated at 104% of the nontreated control.

Methyl bromide (MeBr), a widely used soil fumigant in tomato production, has been banned for ordinary agricultural uses. In the absence of MeBr, a viable alternative is imperative for weed control and prevention of economic loss in tomato production. A field study was conducted in the summers of 2010 and 2011 at Fayetteville, AR, to compare the efficacy and economics of herbicide programs consisting of pre-transplant followed by (fb) post-transplant herbicides in low-density polyethylene (LDPE) mulched tomato. Pre-transplant imazosulfuron at 0.112, 0.224, and 0.336 kg ai ha−1 and S-metolachlor at 1.6 kg ai ha−1 were fb a post-transplant mixture of trifloxysulfuron plus halosulfuron at 0.008 and 0.027 kg ai ha−1 at 4 wk after transplant (WATP). The standard MeBr treatment (2:1 mixture of MeBr plus chloropicrin at 390 kg ai ha−1), weed-free (hand weeding) control, and nontreated weedy check were used for comparison. Pre-transplant S-metolachlor fb post-transplant herbicides controlled Palmer amaranth ≥ 89%, large crabgrass ≥ 88%, and yellow nutsedge ≥ 90%, which was comparable to the control with MeBr. Tomato recovered the injury (≤ 19% at 6 WATP) from post-transplant herbicides in the later weeks. S-metolachlor–containing herbicide programs yielded marketable tomato fruit comparable to the yield with MeBr. Economic evaluation of the herbicide programs demonstrated a net return of $3,758.50 ha−1 from the S-metolachlor–containing herbicide program in LDPE-mulched tomato. Likewise, this herbicide program showed minimum loss of ≤ $671.61 ha−1 in net return relative to MeBr. In conclusion, a herbicide program consisting of pre-transplant S-metolachlor fb post-transplant trifloxysulfuron plus halosulfuron is a viable alternative to MeBr for weed control and marketable yield in LDPE-mulched tomato production.

Annual bluegrass is a problematic weed in bermudagrass and other intensively maintained turfgrasses. Flumioxazin is reported to control annual bluegrass both PRE and POST; however, as a contact herbicide, flumioxazin injures actively growing bermudagrass. Research was conducted in Alabama and California to evaluate optimal flumioxazin application timing for annual bluegrass control, bermudagrass response, and overall sward quality in the field, and to assess annual bluegrass control at various growth stages in the greenhouse. November and December application timings resulted in the best balance of the three parameters. When bermudagrass was not dormant at application, treatment resulted in necrosis of green tissues and thus induced dormancy. The herbicide-induced dormancy resulted in better sward quality due to more uniform and therefore more aesthetically pleasing dormant turfgrass relative to natural dormancy. Flumioxazin at 0.43 kg ai ha−1 resulted in better annual bluegrass control and improved sward quality relative to 0.21 kg ha−1. Incomplete POST annual bluegrass control from later applications was attributed to larger weed size, limiting the effectiveness of this contact herbicide. Greenhouse data corroborated field results and indicated that flumioxazin at 0.43 kg ha−1 controlled ≥ 95% of annual bluegrass up to two tillers. Flumioxazin can be utilized for PRE and POST annual bluegrass control, but utilization of this herbicide is limited to dormant bermudagrass unless induced dormancy can be tolerated, and POST control is limited to annual bluegrass plants ≤ two tillers in size.

Selective annual bluegrass (ABG) control with mesotrione is often inconsistent, and sequential applications might be required for complete control. The complementary nature of p-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD)- and photosystem II (PSII)-inhibiting herbicides is well documented. The HPPD-inhibiting herbicide mesotrione and the PSII-inhibiting herbicide amicarbazone both have efficacy against annual bluegrass and safety on certain cool-season turfgrasses. Topramezone is a HPPD-inhibiting herbicide being investigated for use in turfgrass. Field and greenhouse experiments were conducted to examine single applications of topramezone and mesotrione alone or in combination with amicarbazone for POST ABG control in spring. In greenhouse experiments, the combination of mesotrione (280 g ai ha−1) and amicarbazone (75 g ai ha−1) controlled ABG 70% by 21 d after treatment, > 29% more than either herbicide applied alone; these combinations were determined to be synergistic. Amicarbazone combined with topramezone (14.5 g ai ha−1) provided < 10% ABG control and was not synergistic. When combined with mesotrione, increasing amicarbazone rate to 150 or 255 g ha−1 did not increase ABG control compared to 75 g ha−1in field experiments. Combining mesotrione with amicarbazone resulted in a synergistic increase in POST ABG control at 1 and 2 wk after treatment (WAT). When applied alone or in combination with amicarbazone, increasing the mesotrione rate from 90 to 280 g ha−1 increased efficacy on ABG in field experiments. The combination of mesotrione at 280 g ha−1 and amicarbazone at 75 g ha−1 provided > 90% ABG control in field experiments. Future research should focus on sequential applications of mesotrione–amicarbazone combinations for ABG control in locations where ABG is historically more difficult to control.

In herbicide-selectivity experiments, response can be measured by visual inspection, stand counts, plant mortality, and biomass. Some response types are relative to nontreated control. We developed a nondestructive method by analyzing digital color images to quantify color changes in leaves caused by herbicides. The range of color components of green and nongreen parts of the plants and soil in Hue, Saturation, and Brightness (HSB) color space were used for segmentation. The canopy color changes of barley, winter wheat, red fescue, and brome fescue caused by doses of a glyphosate and diflufenican mixture, cycloxydim, diquat dibromide, and fluazifop-p-butyl were described with a log-logistic dose–response model, and the relationship between visual inspection and image analysis was calculated at the effective doses that cause 50% and 90% response (ED50 and ED90, respectively). The ranges of HSB components for the green and nongreen parts of the plants and soil were different. The relative potencies were not significantly different from one, indicating that visual and image analysis estimations were about the same. The comparison results suggest that image analysis can be used to assess color changes of plants in response to some herbicides and may have the potential to provide an objective measurement of symptoms.

Soybean consultants from Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee were surveyed by direct mail and by on-farm visits in fall 2011 to assess weed management practices and the prevalence of weed species in midsouth U.S. soybean. These consultants represented 15, 21, 5, and 10% of total soybean planted in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee, respectively, in 2011. Collectively, 93% of the total scouted area in these four states was planted with glyphosate-resistant (RR) soybean. The adoption of glufosinate-resistant (LL) soybean was greatest in Arkansas (12%), followed by Tennessee (4%), Mississippi (2%), and Louisiana (< 1%). Only 17% of the RR soybean was treated solely with glyphosate, compared with 35% of LL soybean treated solely with glufosinate. Across four states, average cost of herbicides in RR and LL soybean systems was US$78 and US$91 ha−1, respectively. Collectively across states, total scouted area under conventional tillage was 42%, stale seedbed was 37%, and no-tillage was 21%. Palmer amaranth and morningglories were the most problematic weeds in all four states. Additionally, barnyardgrass and horseweed were the third most problematic weeds of Arkansas and Tennessee, respectively, and Italian ryegrass was the third most problematic weed in Louisiana and Mississippi. Glyphosate-resistant Palmer amaranth infested fewer fields in Louisiana (16% of fields) than it did in the remaining three states (54% collectively). Average Palmer amaranth hand-weeding costs in the midsouth was US$59 ha−1. Three-fourths of the midsouth consultants stipulated the need for continued research and education focused on management of glyphosate-resistant and glyphosate-tolerant weed species.

Crop consultants in Arkansas and Mississippi were sent a direct-mail survey in fall of 2011 with questions concerning weed management in rice. The goal of the survey was to document the extent of imidazoline-resistant rice hectares, the herbicides most commonly recommended in rice, the weeds perceived to be most troublesome in rice including those resistant to herbicides, and suggested areas of research and educational focus that would improve weed management in rice. When appropriate, results from this survey were compared to a similar survey conducted in 2006. Completed rice surveys were returned by 43 consultants, accounting for 179,500 ha of scouted rice or 38% of the rice hectarage in Arkansas and Mississippi. Imidazolinone-resistant rice was grown on 64% of the hectares, and this technology was used continually for the past 5 yr on 11% of the rice hectares. Of the area planted to imidazolinone-resistant rice, 42% of this hectarage was treated solely with an acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicide. Consultants listed improved control options for barnyardgrass and Palmer amaranth as the most important research and educational need in rice. The top five weeds in order of importance were (1) barnyardgrass, (2) sprangletops, (3) red rice, (4) northern jointvetch, and (5) Palmer amaranth. From a predetermined list of research and educational topics, consultants gave the highest ratings of importance to (1) control of herbicide-resistant weeds, (2) strategies to reduce the occurrence and spread of herbicide-resistant weeds, and (3) development of new economical herbicide-resistant rice varieties which was comparable to economical weed control options. Findings from this survey point to the overuse of imidazolinone-resistant rice and a lack of preemptive resistance management strategies such as crop rotation and use of multiple effective herbicide modes of action by some growers, which has likely contributed to selection for the ALS-resistant barnyardgrass and rice flatsedge recently confirmed in Arkansas and Mississippi rice.

New tools for controlling weeds would be useful for soybean production in organic systems. Air-propelled abrasive grit is one such tool that performs well for in-row weed control in corn, but crop safety in soybean is unknown. Responses to abrasion by corn-cob grit of soybean seedlings were examined at VE, VC, VU, V1, V2 (emergence, cotyledon, unifoliate, first trifoliate, and second trifoliate, respectively) and combinations of these growth stages, in both greenhouse and field settings. Seedling leaf areas and dry weights in greenhouse experiments were reduced by treatments that included abrasion at VC, with the primary effect expressed through reductions in the size of the unifoliate leaf. In the field, soybean stand also was reduced by grit applications at VC, especially if followed by a second application at VU or V1. However, soybean yield was not reduced by grit applied at any soybean stage of growth. End-of-season weed dry weights did not differ from hand-weeded checks, and weeds did not impact soybean yields. Thus, abrasive grit for in-row weed control can be applied at least twice at VE through V2 growth stages without lowering soybean yield, but applications at VC probably should be avoided.
