This paper investigates the aerodynamics of a wing under figure-of-eight flapping motion based on Fluid–Structure Interaction (FSI) Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. The kinematic of a wing under figure-of-eight motion creates a condition with a variable angle-of-attack. The effect of using different angles of attack at an initial condition, namely initial pitch angles, for the wing and the spatial size of the figure-of-eight pattern, namely the input link angle, is investigated. The initial pitch angles input is varied from 0° to 330° in steps of 30°, and the input link angles used are 30°, 45°, and 60°. The Young’s modulus of the wing is 3.4 GPa spanwise, which is the elastic modulus of balsa wood material. In comparison with an initial pitch angle of 0°, the 90° initial pitch angle shows much better flight performance in terms of lift generated and stability. The results show that the maximum average lift coefficient of 0.393 occurs at the 90° initial pitch angle. The maximum lift-induced moment for the 90° initial pitch angle is only 5.55% of the maximum lift induced moment for the 0° initial pitch angle. A higher input link angle generates a greater lift force. The pressure distribution in the vicinity of the wing area and the von Mises stress of the wing are also presented.

Backstepping represents a promising control law for fixed-wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Its non-linearity and its adaptation capabilities guarantee adequate control performance over the whole flight envelope, even when the aircraft model is affected by parametric uncertainties. In the literature, several works apply backstepping controllers to various aspects of fixed-wing UAV flight. Unfortunately, many of them have not been implemented in a real-time controller, and only few attempt simultaneous longitudinal and lateral–directional aircraft control. In this paper, an existing backstepping approach able to control longitudinal and lateral–directional motions is adapted for the definition of a control strategy suitable for small UAV autopilots. Rapidly changing inner-loop variables are controlled with non-adaptive backstepping, while slower outer loop navigation variables are Proportional–Integral–Derivative (PID) controlled. The controller is evaluated through numerical simulations for two very diverse fixed-wing aircraft performing complex manoeuvres. The controller behaviour with model parametric uncertainties or in presence of noise is also tested. The performance results of a real-time implementation on a microcontroller are evaluated through hardware-in-the-loop simulation.

This work presents the Topology Optimisation of the Morphing Variable Span of Tapered Wing (MVSTW) using a finite element method. This topology optimisation aims to assess the feasibility of internal wing components such as ribs, spars and other structural components. This innovative approach is proposed for the telescopic mechanism of the MVSTW, which includes the sliding of the telescopically extended wing into the fixed wing segment. The optimisation is performed using the tools within ANSYS Mechanical, which allows the solving of topology optimisation problems. This study aims to minimise overall structural compliance and maximise stiffness to enhance structural performance, and thus to meet the structural integrity requirements of the MVSTW. The study evaluates the maximum displacements, stress and strain parameters of the optimised variable span morphing wing in comparison with those of the original wing. The optimised wing analyses are conducted on four wingspan extensions, that is, 0%, 25%, 50% and 75%, of the original wingspan, and for different flight speeds to include all flight phases (17, 34, 51 and 68m/s, respectively). Topology optimisation is carried out on the solid wing built with aluminium alloy 2024-T3 to distribute the wing components within the fixed and moving segments. The results show that the fixed and moving wing segments must be designed with two spar configurations, and seven ribs with their support elements in the high-strain area. The fixed and moving wing segments’ structural weight values were reduced to 16.3 and 10.3kg from 112 to 45kg, respectively. The optimised MVSTW was tested using different mechanical parameters such as strains, displacements and von Misses stresses. The results obtained from the optimised variable span morphing wing show the optimal mechanical behaviour and the structural wing integrity needed to achieve the multi-flight missions.

Most modern aircraft employ discrete ailerons for roll control. The induced drag, rolling moment, and yawing moment for an aircraft depend in part on the location and size of the ailerons. In the present study, lifting-line theory is used to formulate theoretical relationships between aileron design and the resulting forces and moments. The theory predicts that the optimum aileron geometry is independent of prescribed lift and rolling moment. A numerical potential flow algorithm is used to evaluate the optimum size and location of ailerons for a wide range of planforms with varying aspect ratio and taper ratio. Results show that the optimum aileron design to minimise induced drag always extends to the wing tip. Impacts to induced drag and yawing moment are also considered, and results can be used to inform initial design and placement of ailerons on future aircraft. Results of this optimisation study are also compared to theoretical optimum results that could be obtained from morphing-wing technology. Results of this comparison can be used to evaluate the potential benefits of using morphing-wing technology rather than traditional discrete ailerons.

Real-time flight data from the Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS-B) has been integrated, through a data interface, with a flight performance computer program to predict aviation emissions at altitude. The ADS-B, along with data from Mode-S, are then used to ‘fly’ selected long-range aircraft models (Airbus A380-841, A330-343 and A350-900) and one turboprop (ATR72). Over 2,500 flight trajectories have been processed to demonstrate the integration between databases and software systems. Emissions are calculated for altitudes greater than 3,000 feet (609m) and exclude landing and take-off cycles. This proof of concept fills a gap in the aviation emissions inventories, since it uses real-time flights and produces estimates at a very granular level. It can be used to analyse emissions of gases such as carbon dioxide ($\mathrm{CO}_2$), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides ($\mathrm{NO}_x$) and water vapour on a specific route (city pair), for a specific aircraft, for an entire fleet, or on a seasonal basis. It is shown how $\mathrm{NO}_x$ and water vapour emissions concentrate around tropospheric altitudes only for long-range flights, and that the cruise range is the biggest discriminator in the absolute value of these and other exhaust emissions.

Aircraft performance parameters play a critical role in maintaining economic and environmental sustainability in aviation. Furthermore, the ability to calculate aircraft performance parameters accurately for the cruise range contributes to aviation in areas such as the preliminary design of aircraft and air traffic management. This study is focused on cruise range performance, as this is critical to both the evaluation and understanding of the economic and environmental impacts of commercial aircraft. Quick Access Recorders (QAR) data were used for more accurate analysis of the cruise range. The QAR data used in this study included 6,574 short-distance domestic flights by narrow-body turbofan commercial aircraft between 31 different city pairs. To obtain a more accurate cruise range equation, parameters affecting the cruise range performance were determined and studied. First, the drag polar model was improved to take the cambered profile, compressibility effects and cruise airspeeds of commercial aircraft into consideration using the real flight data. Second, Thrust-Specific Fuel Consumption (TSFC) models were compared and the most suitable one for the cruise phase was selected. After these steps, cruise range values were calculated using the Breguet range equation with these improved parameters. When the results of this enhanced range model were compared with the real flight data, the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) was found to be 2.5% for all the Aircraft and Engine Type Groups (AETGs) considered in the data. This figure corresponds to a 7.9% smaller error than provided by previous range models based on simple parabolic drag polar and TSFC models. According to these results, the application of a simple parabolic drag polar and TSFC is not appropriate for cruise range calculations.

Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles (UCAVs) are believed by many to be the future of aerial strike/reconnaissance capability. This belief led to the design of the UCAV 1303 by Boeing Phantom Works and the US Airforce Lab in the late 1990s. Because UCAV 1303 is expected to take on a wide range of mission roles that are risky for human pilots, it needs to be highly adaptable. Geometric morphing can provide such adaptability and allow the UCAV 1303 to optimise its physical feature mid-flight to increase the lift-to-drag ratio, manoeuvrability, cruise distance, flight control, etc. This capability is extremely beneficial since it will enable the UCAV to reconcile conflicting mission requirements (e.g. loiter and dash within the same mission). In this study, we conduct several modifications to the wing geometry of UCAV 1303 via Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to analyse its aerodynamic characteristics produced by a range of different wing geometric morphs. Here we look into two specific geometric morphing wings: linear twists on one of the wings and linear twists at both wings (wash-in and washout). A baseline CFD of the UCAV 1303 without any wing morphing is validated against published wind tunnel data, before proceeding to simulate morphing wing configurations. The results show that geometric morphing wing influences the UCAV-1303 aerodynamic characteristics significantly, improving the coefficient of lift and drag, pitching moment and rolling moment.

This paper proposes an alternating elliptical impingement chamber in the leading edge of a gas turbine to restrain the cross flow and enhance the heat transfer, and investigates the detailed flow and heat transfer characteristics. The chamber consists of straight sections and transition sections. Numerical simulations are performed by solving the three-dimensional (3D) steady Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations with the Shear Stress Transport (SST) k– $\omega$ turbulence model. The influences of alternating the cross section on the impingement flow and heat transfer of the chamber are studied by comparison with a smooth semi-elliptical impingement chamber at a cross-flow Velocity Ratio (VR) of 0.2 and Temperature Ratio (TR) of 1.00 in the primary study. Then, the effects of the cross-flow VR and TR are further investigated. The results reveal that, in the semi-elliptical impingement chamber, the impingement jet is deflected by the cross flow and the heat transfer performance is degraded. However, in the alternating elliptical chamber, the cross flow is transformed to a pair of longitudinal vortices, and the flow direction at the centre of the cross section is parallel to the impingement jet, thus improving the jet penetration ability and enhancing the impingement heat transfer. In addition, the heat transfer in the semi-elliptical chamber degrades rapidly away from the stagnation region, while the longitudinal vortices enhance the heat transfer further, making the heat transfer coefficient distribution more uniform. The Nusselt number decreases with increase of VR and TR for both the semi-elliptical chamber and the alternating elliptical chamber. The alternating elliptical chamber enhances the heat transfer and moves the stagnation point up for all VR and TR, and the heat transfer enhancement is more obvious at high cross-flow velocity ratio.

To improve the endurance performance of long-endurance Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), a smart morphing method to adjust the UAV and flight mode continuously during flight is proposed. Using this method as a starting point, a smart morphing long-endurance UAV design is conducted and the resulting improvement in the endurance performance studied. Firstly, the initial overall design of the smart morphing long-endurance UAV is carried out, then the morphing form is designed and various control parameters are selected. Secondly, based on multi-agent theory, an architecture for the smart morphing control system is built and the workflow of the smart morphing control system is planned. The morphing decision method is designed in detail based on the particle swarm optimisation algorithm. Finally, a simulation of the smart morphing approach in the climb and cruise stages is carried out to quantitatively verify the improvement in the endurance performance. The simulation results show that the smart morphing method can improve the cruise time by 4.1% with the same fuel consumption.

This paper mainly focuses on the cooperative control of formation configuration for multiple flight vehicles in the three-dimensional space. Considering the external disturbance of the system, the adaptive non-singular terminal sliding mode control law (NTSMC) is designed based on the virtual leader-follower method, which aims to ensure that each flight vehicle reaches the expected terminal position in a limited time and meet the configuration constraints. Further considering the first-order dynamic characteristic of the autopilot, a novel second-order sliding mode control (SOSMC) law is deduced with using the estimated information of sliding mode disturbance observer. The proposed control method ensures that all flight vehicles form the required space formation configuration simultaneously at a pre-designed time, and the chattering phenomenon of the sliding mode surface and acceleration response that nears the equilibrium point is effectively weaken. The stability of the proposed control law is verified by theoretical analysis and lots of mathematical simulations. The results show that the control algorithm in this paper can be used to guidance the formation controller design of multiple flight vehicles in the mid-guidance phase to some extent, and thus the cooperative flight stability of the system can be effectively improved.

Large birds have evolved an effective wing anatomy and mechanics, enabling airborne mastery of manoeuvres and endurance. For these very reasons, they are difficult to replicate and study. The aim of the present work is to achieve active wing articulations to mimic natural bird flapping towards efficient and agile Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). The proposed design, bio-mimicking the black-headed gull, Larus ridibundus, has three active and independent servo-controlled wing joints at the shoulder, elbow and wrist to achieve complex controls. The construction of the wing is realised through a polymeric skin and carbon fibre–epoxy composite spars and ribs. The wing movements (flapping, span reduction and twisting) envelopes of the full-scale robotic gull (Robogull) are examined using the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique and laser displacement sensing. Its aerodynamic performance was evaluated in a wind tunnel at various flapping parameters, wind speeds and angles of attack. It is observed that a flapping amplitude of 45 $^\circ$ is more favourable than 90 $^\circ$ for generating higher lift and thrust, while also depending on the presence of span reduction, twist and wind speed. The model performs better at a flying velocity of 4m/s as compared with 8m/s. Both lift and thrust are high at a higher flapping frequency of 2.5Hz. Combined variation of the flapping frequency and stroke ratio should be considered for better aerodynamic performance. The combination of a lower stroke ratio of 0.5 with a flapping frequency of 2.5Hz generates higher lift and thrust than other combinations. Span reduction and wing twist notably and independently enhance lift and thrust, respectively. An increase in the angle-of-attack increases lift but decreases thrust. The model can also generate a significant rolling moment when set at a bank angle of 20 $^\circ$ and operated with independently controlled flapping amplitudes for the wings (45 $^\circ$ for the left wing and 90 $^\circ$ for the right wing). Based on the optimal values for the flapping amplitude (45 $^\circ$ ), flapping frequency (2.5Hz) and flying velocity (4m/s), the Strouhal number (St) of the Robogull model is 0.24, lying in the optimal range ( $0.2 < \mathrm{St} < 0.4$ ) for natural flyers and swimmers.

The quadratic constitutive relation was proposed as an extension of minimal complexity to linear eddy-viscosity models in order to improve mean flow predictions by better estimating turbulent stress distributions. However, the successes of this modification have been relatively modest and are limited to improved calculations of flow along streamwise corners, which are influenced by weak secondary vortices. This paper revisits the quadratic constitutive relation in an attempt to explain its capabilities and deficiencies. The success in streamwise corner flows cannot be entirely explained by significant improvements in turbulent stress estimates in general, but is instead due to better prediction of the particular turbulent stress combinations which appear in the mean streamwise vorticity equation. As a consequence of this investigation, a new formulation of turbulent stress modification is proposed, which appears to better predict the turbulent stress distributions for a variety of flows: channel flow, equilibrium boundary layers, pipe flow, separated boundary layers and square duct flow.

Landing gear are exposed to cyclic loads from the ground manoeuvres that aircraft perform in-service. Variability is observed in the loading magnitude associated with ground manoeuvres, along with the per-flight variability in ground manoeuvre occurrence and sequencing. Whilst loading magnitude variability has been widely characterised, significant assumptions are required regarding manoeuvre occurrence and sequencing when constructing landing gear load spectra for fatigue design. These assumptions are required due to the limited availability of data concerning ground manoeuvre occurrence and sequencing relating to aircraft in-service and require validation to facilitate the design of more efficient components. ‘Big-Data’ approaches, employing Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) transponder data, enable aircraft ground tracks to be identified. This paper presents a methodology to characterise the variability in ground manoeuvre occurrence and sequencing using ADS-B data sourced from Flightradar24® for a wide-body aircraft fleet. Using statistics generated for the fleet, it was identified that significant variability exists in the occurrence and sequencing of turning and braking manoeuvres. The statistics also validate existing assumptions, including that the proportional share of left and right turning manoeuvres is equal. Finally, this paper discusses the utility of ADS-B datasets for constructing landing gear load spectra and monitoring of landing gear in-service.

The stability and control derivatives are essential parameters in the flight operation of aircraft, and their determination is a routine task using classical parameter estimation methods based on maximum likelihood and least-squares principles. At high angle-of-attack, the unsteady aerodynamics may pose difficulty in aerodynamic structure determination, hence data-driven methods based on artificial neural networks could be an alternative choice for building models to characterise the behaviour of the system based on the measured motion and control variables. This research paper investigates the feasibility of using a recurrent neural model based on an extreme learning machine network in the modelling of the aircraft dynamics in a restricted sense for identification of the aerodynamic parameters. The recurrent extreme learning machine network is combined with the Gauss–Newton method to optimise the unknowns of the postulated aerodynamic model. The efficacy of the proposed estimation algorithm is studied using real flight data from a quasi-steady stall manoeuvre. Furthermore, the estimates are validated against the parameters estimated using the maximum likelihood method. The standard deviations of the estimates demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Finally, the quantities regenerated using the estimates present good agreement with their corresponding measured values, confirming that a qualitative estimation can be obtained using the proposed estimation algorithm.

Active flow control for aerofoils has been proven to be an effective way to improve the aerodynamic performance of aircraft. A conceptual hybrid design with surfaces embedded with Shape-Memory Alloy (SMA) and trailing Macro Fibre Composites (MFC) is proposed to implement active flow control for aerofoils. A Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model has been built to explore the feasibility and potential performance of the proposed conceptual hybrid design. Accordingly, numerical analysis is carried out to investigate the unsteady flow characteristics by dynamic morphing rather than using classical static simulations and complicated coupling. The results show that camber growth by SMA action could cause an evident rise of Cl and Cd in the take-off/landing phases when the Angle-of-Attack (AoA) is less than 10°. The transient tail vibration behaviour in the cruise period when using MFC actuators is studied over wide ranges of frequency, AoA and vibration amplitude. The buffet frequency is locked in by the vibration frequency, and a decrease of 1.66–2.32% in Cd can be achieved by using a proper vibration frequency and amplitude.

Turbulence and gusts cause variations in the aerodynamic forces and moments applied to the structure of aircraft, resulting in passenger discomfort and dynamic loads on the structure that it must be designed to support. By designing Gust Load Alleviation (GLA) systems, two objectives can be achieved: first, realizing higher passenger comfort; and second, reducing the dynamic structural loads, which allows the design of lighter structures. In this paper, a methodology for designing combined feedback/feedforward GLA systems is proposed. The methodology relies on the availability of a wind profile ahead of the aircraft measured by a Doppler LIDAR sensor, and is based on $H_{\infty}$-optimal control techniques and a discrete-time preview-control problem formulation. Moreover, to allow design trade-offs between those two objectives (to achieve design flexibility) as well as to allow specification of robustness criteria, a variant of the problem using multi-channel $H_{\infty}$-optimal control techniques is introduced. The methodology developed in this paper is intended to be applied to large aircraft, e.g. transport aircraft or business jets. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed design methodology in accounting for the measured wind profile to achieve the two mentioned objectives, while ensuring both design flexibility and controller robustness and optimality.

In this paper we present a novel approach to calculate Block Time and Fuel (BTF) consumed for an aircraft model during a flight. The BTF model computes the ground distance between the origin and destination airports, derives the flight’s cruise altitude and by integrating two institutional data sets calculates the duration and the fuel consumed for the whole of taxi-out, take-off, climb, cruise, descent, approach, landing and taxi-in phases. We use the French Association for Operational Research and Decision Support (ROADEF) 2009 Challenge flight rotation to sample our model. The statistical analysis of the results consisted of comparing BTF results for the block time and those from the ROADEF Challenge 2009 with the real ones retrieved from Flightaware® for the same origin and destination airports and aircraft model. Statistical results are reported for percentile and root mean square error, and we show that, using simple calculations, the BTF computational results for block time are in a lower percentile and have lower root mean square error than the block times used by the ROADEF 2009 Challenge. To compare the fuel consumed, we used the values for the real flights published in the literature review. We were able to verify a good fit between the BTF results and those values. Since the BTF model computational results are obtained within a few seconds, we also conclude that the BTF model is suited for flight planning and disruption recovery in commercial aviation.

The aerodynamic performance of a deployable and low-cost unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is investigated and improved in present work. The parameters of configuration, such as airfoil and winglet, are determined via an optimising process based on a discrete adjoint method. The optimised target is locked on an increasing lift-to-drag ratio with a limited variation of pitching moments. The separation that will lead to a stall is delayed after optimisation. Up to 128 design variables are used by the optimised solver to give enough flexibility of the geometrical transformation. As much as 20% enhancement of lift-to-drag ratio is gained at the cruise angle-of-attack, that is, a significant improvement in the lift-to-drag ratio adhering to the preferred configuration is obtained with increasing lift and decreasing drag coefficients, essentially entailing an improved aerodynamic performance.

In order to know the characteristics of reducing the exhaust gas infrared signal of the lobed mixer according to the external air mixing ratio, an infrared signal and temperature distribution measurement using a micro-turbojet engine is performed. A certain amount of compressed air is supplied through an external duct mounted on the micro-turbojet engine exhaust to simulate bypass flow, which is mixed with high-temperature core air and ejected to the atmosphere. The exhaust nozzle used in the experiment is a lobed mixer with a lobe of sinusoidal shape and is designed to have a penetration of 0.2. Exhaust gas temperature and infrared signal are measured according to distance from nozzle outlet under conditions of bypass ratio of 0.5, 1.0 and 1.4. Infrared reduction rates are compared to data without compressed air supply. As a result of the experiment, as the bypass ratio increased, the infrared signal of the exhaust gas and the temperature decrease with bypass ratio increase, and in the case of a bypass ratio of 1.4, the effect of reducing the temperature is observed even at a long distance. In addition, we compared the results of previous studies of a simple cone shape without mixer with infrared reduction effect. The results show that the lobed mixer has a greater effect on reducing the temperature of the exhaust gas and reducing the infrared signal than the cone nozzle. The structure of the mixed jet flow is also studied through Schlieren visualisation and 3D temperature distribution.

The design and performance quantification of four Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) architectures for a canard-type aircraft configuration are presented. The aero-structural sizing of the canard configuration and the sizing procedure for the proposed VTOL configurations are described and discussed. The proposed VTOL architectures are based on a range of rotor distances to the centre of gravity, quad- and tri-rotor configurations, retractable front rotors and tilt rear rotors. The aerodynamic performance, total installed power and VTOL system mass were modelled and experimentally validated. The results show that a fully exposed VTOL system penalises the Lift-over-Drag (L/D) ratio significantly relative to a clean configuration. The VTOL system mass can be reduced by up to 32% by using a tilt tri-rotor configuration when compared with an equidistant quad-rotor+pusher configuration. The fraction of installed power usable for forward flight can be increased by up to 80% with a tilt configuration. For the proposed mission, the range can be significantly increased if a tri-rotor tilt configuration is adopted in place of an equidistant quad-rotor+pusher configuration.
