An Fe–10Cr–4Al alloy containing reactive elements developed for application in high-temperature liquid lead environments was analyzed after exposure in 600 and 750°C lead with dissolved oxygen for 1,000–2,000 h. Atom probe tomography, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray scattering were all used to study the protective oxide formed on the surface. Exposure at 750°C resulted in a 2-μm thick oxide, whereas the 600°C exposure resulted in a 100-nm thick oxide. Both oxides were layered, with an Fe–Al spinel on top, and an alumina layer toward the metal. In the 600°C exposed material, there was a Cr-rich oxide layer between the spinel and the alumina. Metallic lead particles were found in the inner and middle parts of the oxide, related to pores. The combination of the experimental techniques, focusing on atom probe tomography, and the interpretations that can be done, are discussed in detail.

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a semiconductor that can be applied in different technological areas. In this work, we investigated the modifications of the electrical properties of thin films composed of TiO2 nanoparticles produced with different morphologies. The solvothermal route used for the synthesis allowed the production of nanoparticles with functionalized surfaces due to oleate groups. It was possible to modulate nanocrystals shape and size due to the detachment crystal growth mechanism, by changing the reaction time. Nanorods were obtained using 4 h of synthesis, and an increase in the reaction time to 64 h led to a bipyramidal morphology. The functionalization by the organic ligand allowed the preparation of stable colloidal solutions, which were used to prepare thin films by the dip-coating method. The films presented a homogeneous surface, an average thickness around 100 nm, and no agglomerations were observed. The electrical resistance measurements indicated a typical behavior of semiconductors, and they were dependent on the nanoparticle morphology. An exploratory test indicated that the thin films prepared using nanorod particles presented a higher electrical response compared with isotropic particles, when exposed in a liquefied petroleum gas vapor atmosphere. Therefore, the morphology of the nanoparticles is a key factor for the further application of these thin films in gas sensing. Employing an easy methodology which required simple apparatus, and by using reaction time modulation only, it was possible to prepare homogeneous thin films with a tunable electrical response.

The mitigation of CMAS (calcium–magnesium–aluminum–silicon oxide) infiltration is a major requirement for the stability of thermal barrier coatings. In this study, yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ)–Al2O3–SiC, YSZ–Al2O3–Ta2O5, and YSZ–Al2O3–Nb2O5 self-healing composites produced by uniaxially pressing powders were investigated as an alternative to YSZ. CMAS infiltration in these materials was tested at 1250 °C for 10 h. Comparing the depth of CMAS infiltration using scanning electron microscope (SEM) in tandem with electron-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), all self-healing materials were found to perform better than the reference materials. While standard YSZ shows massive CMAS infiltration, SEM micrographs and EDS maps revealed a 33-fold improvement in CMAS resistance for the YSZ–Al2O3–Nb2O5 system, which exhibited the best performance among the selected self-repairing materials. X-ray diffraction and high-resolution SEM micrographs taken 10 μm below the surface revealed that CMAS only infiltrated pores in the topmost region of the samples. Both YSZ–Al2O3–Ta2O5 and YSZ–Al2O3–Nb2O5 systems showed no signs of chemical reaction with CMAS.

Dissolution of oxides in aqueous solutions is fundamentally important for a range of applications and a critical process that determines the chemical durability of industrial ceramics, the performance of nuclear waste forms, and the chemical weathering of minerals. The thermodynamic equilibrium and kinetics of dissolution reactions are key to determining the rate at which oxides dissolve. The increase in collaborative research across disciplines in materials research necessitates a common background to tackle shared scientific problems across different fields. This review selectively examines the fundamentals of dissolution theories that have been developed in chemistry, geochemistry, and materials science, and assembles them into a single collective document for the broader materials science community. Applications of the theories are highlighted using examples from specific areas, but can be similarly applied to other areas. Challenges and future research needs for a predictive-level understanding are discussed in light of the current literature.

Nuclear fuel debris generated at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant during the loss of coolant accident in 2011, still resides within the reactor units, constantly cooled by water. Until it is retrieved, the fuel debris will corrode, releasing radioactive elements into the coolant water and the ground surrounding the reactors. To predict the corrosion behaviour of these materials, and to establish parameters for experiments with U-containing and real fuel debris, the corrosion of two surrogate fuel debris materials, with a composition of Ce(1-x)ZrxO2 (x = 0.2 and 0.4), was investigated. Materials were synthesised by a wet chemistry route and pellets were sintered at 1700°C in air atmosphere. Due to the slow corrosion kinetics, aggressive conditions were applied, and corrosion experiments were performed in 9 mol.L-1 HNO3 under static conditions. The incorporation of Zr into the structure of Ce reduced the normalised dissolution rate; from (3.75 ± 0.15) × 10-6 g.m-2.d-1 to (4.96 ± 0.28) × 10-6 g.m-2.d-1 for RL(Ce) of Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 and Ce0.6Zr0.4O2, respectively.

We investigate, from first principles, the electrochemical sodiation mechanism of rutile-type vanadium dioxide as a possible electrode material for sodium-ion batteries. The computed voltages versus sodium metal are low in comparison to current state-of-the-art sodium-ion battery cathodes, which we can relate to the large space demand of sodium ions in the compact rutile structure and the resulting severe lattice deformations compared to other working metals. Due to the same reason large anisotropic unit cell volume changes are predicted during cycling. We furthermore find a change of the preferred reaction mechanism during discharge, with a switching between insertion- and conversion-type reaction at higher degrees of sodiation. The predicted capacities on the other hand are appreciable, making a further consideration of this material as high-potential anode in combination with sodium working metal interesting.

Burnups can cause major structural changes in the edge of the fuel rod and a general degradation of the thermal conductivity. In irradiated mixed oxide fuels of UO2, PuO2 with NpO2 as fission products (FP) various chemical states depending on the conditions of the fuel is developed. This work, we firstly applied the MD relation to obtain the thermal conductivity of UO2, PuO2, and (U, Pu) O2 in temperature range of 300–2000 K. Lattice parameter, Burnup and the thermal conductivity were then calculated for specified UO2 and PuO2. This calculation relates the degradation of thermal conductivity with a number of pores and increasing temperature. Finally, the migration energy barrier and the recovery energies of the obstruction type defects were calculated with molecular dynamics simulation.

Ceria (CeO2) possesses a distinctive redox property due to a reversible conversion to its nonstoichiometric oxide and has been considered as a promising catalyst in the oxidative coupling of methane. Since a heterogeneously catalytic process usually takes place only on the surface of catalysts, it is reasonably expected that the performance of a catalyst, such as CeO2, highly relies on its size- and shape-dependent surface structure. We report our recent progress in achieving exclusive crystal facet-terminated CeO2 nanocrystals using a shape-controlled synthesis protocol in a one-pot colloidal system. We modified a two-phase solvothermal approach to fabricate cubic and truncated octahedral CeO2 nanocrystals with a size-control. During the two-phase solvothermal process, we propose that the Ce-precursors transfer from the aqueous layer to the interface of the organic phase, promoted by the capping ligands (as known as phase-transfer catalysts), for the oxidation and nucleation, and subsequently form CeO2 nanocrystals in the organic layer. As different capping ligands favor binding on diverse crystal facets, tuning the composition of the capping ligand with a precise control could generate nanocrystals that are dominated by a single type of facets with a relatively narrow size distribution.

Bio-reduction agents are being explored to synthesised nanoparticles to minimize the effects of toxic chemicals. The present study was focused on green approach for the synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles using aqueous seeds extract of Papaver somniferum. The biosynthesised ZnO NPs (27.8nm) were characterized by using of spectroscopy and microscopy instruments. The surface morphology and the structural analysis confirms the formation of hexagonal nanostructure and a pure zincite nature of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) respectively. The EDS spectrum confirms pure ZnO NPs were synthesised. From electrochemical properties, the CV indicates both anodic and cathodic sweep are quasi-reversible properties whose intensity increases with the scan rates. The bode plot shows the maximum angles of 74o which is an indication of a higher conductivity of ZnO NPs.

A novel technique providing a cost effective sustainable wet chemical etching method of synthesizing black Moly thin films rapidly has been presented. A top- down method for fabricating MoO3 has been investigated to understand the effect of chemical etchant concentration on the structural, morphological and optical properties of the thin films on Mo substrates. The XRD patterns demonstrated the formation of Tugarinovite MoO2 films on Mo substrate after annealing at 500°C in a vacuum. In this work, we developed nanostructured MoO3 on Mo substrate solar absorber, with a high solar absorptance of over 89%. These results suggest that solar absorbers made from refractory metal oxide nanostructures can be used for solar thermal applications.

Wide-bandgap oxide semiconductors have received significant attention as they can produce devices with high output and breakdown voltage. p-Type conductivity control is essential to realize bipolar devices. Therefore, as a rare wide-bandgap p-type oxide semiconductor, NiO (3.7 eV) has garnered considerable attention. In view of the heterojunction device with Ga2O3 (4.5–5.0 eV), a p-type material with a large bandgap is desired. Herein, we report the growth of a Ni1-xMgxO thin film, which has a larger bandgap than NiO, on α-Al2O3 (0001) substrates that was developed using the mist chemical vapor deposition method. The Ni1-xMgxO thin films epitaxially grown on α-Al2O3 substrates showed crystallographic orientation relationships identical to those of NiO thin films. The Mg composition of Ni1-xMgxO was easily controlled by the Mg concentration of the precursor solution. The Ni1-xMgxO thin film with a higher Mg composition had a larger bandgap, and the bandgap reached 3.9 eV with a Ni1-xMgxO thin film with x = 0.28. In contrast to an undoped Ni1-xMgxO thin film showing insulating properties, the Li-doped Ni1-xMgxO thin film had resistivities of 101–105 Ω∙cm depending on the Li precursor concentration, suggesting that Li effectively acts as an acceptor.

The oxide films formed on spent fuel claddings are regarded as a potential source of the instantaneous release of radionuclides, such as 14C, after waste disposal. We investigated the instant release fraction using the irradiated oxide exfoliated from a Zircaloy-2 water rod, whose bundle burnup was 53.0 GWd/MTU. We performed a rapid leaching test in a dilute NaOH solution (pH of 12.5) for 10 min in an ultrasonic bath to ensure the release of radionuclides. The activity ratios of the leached amount to the total amount for 14C, 60Co, and 125Sb were extremely low at approximately 10-4 to 10-3, among which the maximum value was 2.65 × 10-3 for 125Sb. These ratios were higher than that predicted from the thermodynamic solubility of ZrO2, i.e., less than 10-6. However, given the low ratios, it is too conservative to regard the inventory of all radionuclides in the Zircaloy oxide as instantaneous release. A small part of the released 14C was found as volatile species.

The phase evolution of reactive radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtered Cr0.28Zr0.10O0.61 coatings has been studied by in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction during annealing under air atmosphere and vacuum. The annealing in vacuum shows t-ZrO2 formation starting at ∼750–800 °C, followed by decomposition of the α-Cr2O3 structure in conjunction with bcc-Cr formation, starting at ∼950 °C. The resulting coating after annealing to 1140 °C is a mixture of t-ZrO2, m-ZrO2, and bcc-Cr. The air-annealed sample shows t-ZrO2 formation starting at ∼750 °C. The resulting coating after annealing to 975 °C is a mixture of t-ZrO2 and α-Cr2O3 (with dissolved Zr). The microstructure coarsened slightly during annealing, but the mechanical properties are maintained, with no detectable bcc-Cr formation. A larger t-ZrO2 fraction compared with α-Cr2O3 is observed in the vacuum-annealed coating compared with the air-annealed coating at 975 °C. The results indicate that the studied pseudo-binary oxide is more stable in air atmosphere than in vacuum.

Macro-mesoporous zirconium titanate monoliths have been successfully prepared via a sol–gel process accompanied by phase separation, with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) as a phase separation inducer and N-methylformamide (NFA) as a gelation accelerator. The size and morphology of macropores are controlled by the PEO and NFA amount. By choosing appropriate starting composition, the co-continuous structure could be obtained. The as-dried gel is amorphous, the pore size is in the range of 0.05–0.5 μm, the porosity is 46%, and the surface area is 111 m2/g. After heat treatment at 500 °C, the gel transforms into the phase ZrTiO4, the macropore diameter decreases slightly, the porosity increases to 63%, and the surface area decreases to 40 m2/g. Moreover, the macroporous structure is well maintained, and the skeleton becomes dense and smooth. The samples have macropores, mesopores, and micropores before and after heat treatment.

The system GeO2–TiO2 was studied experimentally at high pressure and temperature to measure the miscibility of the two components and to test its applicability as a temperature sensor in high-pressure experiments. Significant solubility between the two end-members was found, with two coexisting solid solutions at high pressure exhibiting mutual solubility that increases with temperature along a solvus. The two solid solution compositions at the solvus can be distinguished readily by X-ray diffraction. At higher temperatures, a complete solid solution exists between the two end-members. The complete solution occurs above a critical line in P–T space (a critical point at each pressure). The critical point is located near 1630 °C and mole fraction ${X_{{\rm{Ti}}{{\rm{O}}_{\rm{2}}}}} = 0.57$ at 6.6 GPa and changes by 60 ± 5° per GPa in the region from 4 to 7 GPa. A model for the shape of the solvus is developed using X-ray diffraction data points from a series of quench experiments and an in situ experiment, and the model is used to estimate the thermal gradients in a Kawai-type multianvil assembly.

Enthalpy increments, $\Delta _{298}^T{H^0}$, for highly nonstoichiometric SrFeO3−δ (δ = 0.18–0.41) were obtained between 373 and 1273 K in air using drop calorimetry. The analysis of the $\Delta _{298}^T{H^0}\left( T \right)$ dependence at lower temperatures allowed evaluating the enthalpy of tetragonal to cubic ${{I4} / {mmm}} \,{\tf="TeX CM Bold Maths Symbols"\char33}\, Pm\bar{3}m$ phase transition at 560 K, 1.57 kJ/mol, and the Maier–Kelley function for $\Delta _{298}^T{H^0}\left( T \right)$ of tetragonal SrFeO3−δ (space group ${{I4} / {mmm}}$). Combined investigation of oxygen nonstoichiometry $\bolddelta \left( T \right)$ dependence, measured by thermogravimetry, and higher-temperature $\Delta _{298}^T{H^0}\left( T \right)$ of cubic SrFeO3−δ (space group $Pm\bar{3}m$) yielded the temperature-dependent reduction (oxygen release) enthalpy, $\Delta H_{{\rm{red}}}^{\rm{0}}$. Calorimetrically-determined $\Delta H_{{\rm{red}}}^{\rm{0}}$ of SrFeO3−δ increases from 65 ± 7 kJ/mol O at 873–973 K to 84 ± 7 kJ/mol O at 1073–1273 K, which may indicate that the short-range vacancy ordering in SrFeO3−δ is hampered at higher temperatures.

In the present study, TiO2NT coatings grown on simulated body fluid-based electrolyte were investigated as drug delivery devices. Nanotubes (NTs) were grown over commercially pure Ti and Ti6Al4V alloy. Morphology analysis showed that NTs in alloy samples present an inner diameter of 10 nm smaller in average than NTs grown over pure Ti. The surface wettability in water decreased with the anodizing time for both substrates. The application of coatings as drug delivery devices has been studied through the incorporation of ciprofloxacin. To control the drug release, collagen was used as the diffusional barrier. It was observed the drug release follows a Fick’s kinetics. Bioactivity assays showed the absence of hemolytic activity. The concentration of the drug during the release interval remained below the toxic concentration limit, presenting a bacteriostatic activity. All coatings prepared presented a high antibacterial activity, being the area of inhibition of bacterial growth above 13 times the area of the implant.
