Echinococcus shiquicus is peculiar to the Qinghai–Tibet plateau of China. Research on this parasite has mainly focused on epidemiological surveys and life cycle studies. So far, limited laboratory studies have been reported. Here, experimental infection of E. shiquicus metacestode in BALB/c mice and Mongolian jirds (Meriones unguiculatus) was carried out to establish alternative laboratory animal models. Intraperitoneal inoculation of metacestode material containing protoscoleces (PSCs) obtained from infected plateau pikas were conducted on BALB/c mice. Furthermore, metacestode material without PSCs deriving from infected BALB/c mice was intraperitoneally inoculated to Mongolian jirds. Experimental animals were dissected for macroscopic and histopathological examination. The growth of cysts in BALB/c mice was infiltrative, and they invaded the murine entire body. Most of the metacestode cysts were multicystic, but a few were unilocular. The cysts contained sterile vesicles, which had no PSCs. The metacestode materials were able to successfully infect new mice. In the jirds model, E. shiquicus cysts were typically formed freely in the peritoneal cavity; the majority of these cysts were free while a small portion adhered loosely to nearby organs. The proportion of fertile cysts was high, and contained many PSCs. The PSCs produced in Mongolian jirds also successfully infected new ones, which confirms that jirds can serve as an alternative experimental intermediate host. In conclusion, a laboratory animal infection was successfully established for E. shiquicus using BALB/c mice and Mongolian jirds. These results provide new models for the in-depth study of Echinococcus metacestode survival strategy, host interactions and immune escape mechanism.

Mode distortion induced by stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) has become a new obstacle for the further development of high-power fiber lasers with high beam quality. Here, an approach for effective suppression of the SRS-induced mode distortion in high-power fiber amplifiers has been demonstrated experimentally by adjusting the seed power (output power of seed source) and forward feedback coefficient of the rear port in the seed source. It is shown that the threshold power of the SRS-induced mode distortion can be increased significantly by reducing the seed power or the forward feedback coefficient. Moreover, it has also been found that the threshold power is extremely sensitive to the forward feedback power value from the rear port. The influence of the seed power on the threshold power can be attributed to the fact that the seed power plays an important role in the effective length of the gain fiber in the amplifier. The influence of the forward feedback coefficient on the threshold power can be attributed to the enhanced SRS configuration because the end surface of the rear port together with the fiber in the amplifier constitutes a half-opening cavity. This suppression approach will be very helpful to further develop the high-power fiber amplifiers with high beam quality.

Echinococcus shiquicus is currently limited to the Qinghai–Tibet plateau, a large mountainous region in China. Although the zoonotic potential remains unknown, progress is being made on the distribution and intermediate host range. In this study, we report E. shiquicus within Gansu and Qinghai provinces in regions located not only around the central areas but also the southeast edge of the plateau and describe their genetic relationship with previous isolates from the plateau. From 1879 plateau pikas examined, 2.39% (95% CI 1.79–3.18) were infected with E. shiquicus. The highest prevalence of 10.26% (4.06–23.58) was recorded in Makehe town, Qinghai province. Overall the prevalence was marginally higher in Qinghai (2.5%, CI 1.82–3.43) than in Gansu (2%, CI 1.02–3.89). The cox1 and nad1 genes demonstrated high and low haplotype and nucleotide diversities, respectively. The median-joining network constructed by the cox1–nad1 gene sequences demonstrated a star-like configuration with a median vector (unsampled haplotype) occupying the centre of the network. No peculiar distinction or common haplotype was observed in isolates originating from the different provinces. The presence of E. shiquicus in regions of the southeast and northeast edges of the Qinghai–Tibet plateau and high genetic variation warrants more investigation into the haplotype distribution and genetic polymorphism by exploring more informative DNA regions of the mitochondrial genome to provide epidemiologically useful insight into the population structure of E. shiquicus across the plateau and its axis.

Magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (MIONPs) are particularly attractive in biosensor, antibacterial activity, targeted drug delivery, cell separation, magnetic resonance imaging tumor magnetic hyperthermia, and so on because of their particular properties including superparamagnetic behavior, low toxicity, biocompatibility, etc. Although many methods had been developed to produce MIONPs, some challenges such as severe agglomeration, serious oxidation, and irregular size are still faced in the synthesis of MIONPs. Thus, various strategies had been developed for the surface modification of MIONPs to improve the characteristics of them and obtain multifunctional MIONPs, which will widen the applicational scopes of them. Therefore, the processes, mechanisms, advances, advantages, and disadvantages of six main approaches for the synthesis of MIONPs; surface modification of MIONPs with inorganic materials, organic molecules, and polymer molecules; applications of MIONPs or modified MIONPs; the technical challenges of synthesizing MIONPs; and their limitations in biomedical applications were described in this review to provide the theoretical and technological guidance for their future applications.

The aim of this study was to explore whether the morphology of polar bodies (PBs) estimated at 16–18 h after insemination can be used as an additional marker for predicting human embryo quality or pregnancy outcome. The data from 355 patients who received standard in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) treatment after controlled ovarian hyperstimulation were recruited. Normal fertilized 3048 zygotes from 382 cycles were divided into two groups, PBs intact or fragmented, according to the morphology of PBs assessed at 16–18 h after insemination. Embryo quality and pregnancy outcome were compared between the two groups. It was shown that the day 3 (D3) good embryo rate, good quality blastocyst rate and available embryo rate of the PBs intact group were all significantly higher than that of the corresponding fragmented groups. However, no significant differences in pregnancy rate (PR) or implantation rate (IR) were observed between the intact and fragmented groups. Although PBs morphology estimated at 16–18 h after insemination had little effect on PR or IR in fresh embryo transfer cycles, a better embryo quality can be achieved in the PB-intact group, which is valuable for embryo selection.

Discovery of well-preserved specimens from the Nanba section in Yiyang, Hunan Province, in combination with a literature review, enabled us to re-evaluate and revise the graptolite genus Ancoragraptus. This is a genus of biradiate, multiramous anisograptids with horizontal to reclined rhabdosomes and free lower part of the metasicula and slightly isolated autothecal apertures. According to the revised definition, two species are included in Ancoragraptus, i.e., Ancoragraptus bulmani (Spjeldnæs, 1963) and Ancoragraptus psigraptoides Cho, Kim, and Jin, 2009. It is the first time that A. bulmani has been reported from China. The occurrences of Ancoragraptus reported worldwide are reviewed in the present study and found to be restricted to the lower upper Tremadocian. The restriction of Ancoragraptus in stratigraphical distribution makes it a taxon with a high potential for precise biostratigraphical correlation at both regional and global scale.

We propose to build up a facility of sub-picosecond hard X-ray pulses based on Thomson scattering between femtosecond laser pulses and relativistic electrons which is a useful tool for the purpose of material investigation, plasma diagnostics, and shock wave measurement. This article reviews the principles and the development of X-ray sources based on Thomson scattering. Then New Light Source®, the Thomson scattering X-ray facility we will develop is introduced. The characteristics of a Thomson scattering X-ray source are analyzed. A computer model of the Thomson source to be developed is described in order to provide a source of the rays used in a ray tracing method, which has proved to be an essential computer tool for designing and optimizing the optical system of high brightness X-ray facilities. A code for the ray tracing source model is created based on the Monte Carlo approach. It is able to evaluate the properties and performances of the light source under development using this model. According to the simulation results, we discuss the dependence of imaging quality and source properties including spectral distribution, emittance, flux which depends on the laser and electron beam parameters, in order to check if operation performances are as expected. We also estimate the possibility of measuring the energy spectrum of a Thomson scattering source by using a crystal diffraction method. Ray tracing calculations are performed using SHADOW program package, and a new model of Thomson scattering X-ray source which can be processed in that program is established with additional code.

Typical titanium-based perovskite oxides Eu1−xBaxTiO3 (x = 0.6−0.8), Eu1−xKxTiO3 (x = 0.2,0.32), and La0.7 (Na,K)0.3TiO3 were synthesized by high pressure and temperature using RE2O3 (RE = La,Eu), TiO2, alkaline, or alkaline earth carbonates as the starting materials. X-ray diffraction data analysis showed that there was a structural transformation in Eu1−xBaxTiO3 by varying Ba content [i.e., from cubic (x = 0.6,0.7) to tetragonal (x = 0.8)], and that samples Eu1−xKxTiO3 and La0.7(Na,K)0.3TiO3 crystallized in the cubic perovskite structure. 151Eu Mössbauer spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance measurements revealed mixed valence of Eu2+/Eu3+ in samples Eu1−xBaxTiO3 and Eu1−xKxTiO3, while Ti ions were present in pure Ti4+ state. Cubic Eu1−xKxTiO3 was metastable, which decomposed into a mixture of perovskite and pyrochlore phases at high temperatures as accompanied by an oxidation process from Eu2+ to Eu3+. For samples La0.7 (Na,K)0.3TiO3, Ti3+ signals were clearly observed. The reduction mechanisms for Eu ions at A site and Ti ions at B site in the perovskite oxides are discussed in terms of the chemical nature of the framework ions and substitution ions under high pressure and temperature.
