Let K/Kobe a finitely generated field extension of transcendence degree 1. Byan element with the uniqueness propertyfor (K, v)/(K0, v0) (or more briefly for v/v0)we mean an element / of Khaving u-valuation 0 which satisfies (i) the image of tunder the canonicalhomomorphism from the valuation ring of vonto the residue field of v(henceforth referred to as the v-residue ot t) is transcendental over ko; that is vcoincides with the Gaussian valuation on the subfield K0(t) defined by (ii) vis the only valuation of K (up to equivalence) extending the valuation .

If X is a class of groups, the class of counter-Xgroups is defined to consist of all groups having no non-trivial X-quotients. The counter-abelian groups are the perfect groups and the counter-counter-abelian groups are the imperfect groups studied by Berrick and Robinson [2]. This paper is concerned with the class of counter-counterfinite groups. It turns out that these are the groups in which any non-trivial quotient has a non-trivial representation over any finitely generated domain (Theorem 1.1), so we shall call these groups highly representable or HR-groups.

Let R be a ring with identity and let Eij ∈ Mn(R) be the usual n X n matrix units, where n ≥ 2 and 1≤i, j≤N. Let En(R) be the subgroup of GLn(R) generated by all Tij(q where r ∈ R and i ≄ j. For each (two-sided) R-ideal q let En(R, q) be the normal subgroup of En(R) generated by Tij(q), where q ∈ q. The subgroup En(R, q) plays an important role in the theory of GLn(R). For example, Vaserˇstein has proved that, for a larger class of rings (which includes all commutative rings), every subgroup S of GLn(R), when R ∈ and n≥3, contains the subgroup En(R, q0), where q0 is the R-ideal generated by αij, rαij-αjjr (i ≄ j, r ∈ R), for all (αij) ∈ S. (See [13, Theorem 1].) In addition Vaseršstein has shown that, for the same class of rings, En(R, q) has a simple set of generators when n ≥ 3. Let Ên(R, q) be the subgroup of En(R, q) generated by Tij(r)Tij(q)Tij(−r), where r ∈ R, q ∈ q. Then Ên(R, q) = En(R, q), for all q, when R ∈ and n ≥ 3.(See [13, Lemma 8].)

We consider sequences (Ah)defined over the field ℚ of rational numbers and satisfying a linear homogeneous recurrence relation

with polynomial coefficients sj;. We shall assume without loss of generality, as we may, that the sj, are defined over ℤ and the initial values A0A]…, An−1 are integer numbers. Also, without loss of generality we may assume that S0 and Sn have no non-negative integer zero. Indeed, any other case can be reduced to this one by making a shift h → h – l – 1 where l is an upper bound for zeros of the corresponding polynomials (and which can be effectively estimated in terms of their heights)

Let S be a semigroup and let be an S-graded ring. Rs = 0 for all but finitely many elements s ∈ S1, then R is said to have finite support. In this paper we concern ourselves with the question of whether a graded ring R with finite support inherits a given ring theoretic property from the homogeneous subrings Re corresponding to idempotent semigroup elements e.

Let Fr denote the free group of rank r and Out Fr: = AutFr/Inn Fr the outer automorphism group of Fr (automorphisms modulo inner automorphisms). In [10] we determined the maximal order 2rr! (for r > 2) for finite subgroups of Out Fr as well as the finite subgroup of that order which, for r > 3, is unique up to conjugation. In the present paper we determine all maximal finite subgroups (that is not contained in a larger finite subgroup) of Out F3, up to conjugation (Theorem 2 in Section 3). Here the considered case r = 3 serves as a model case: our method can be applied for other small values of r (in principle for any value of r) but the computations become considerably longer and are more apt for a computer then; the method can also be applied to determine the maximal finite subgroups of the automorphism group Aut Fr of Fr. Note that the canonical projection Aut Fr ⃗ Out Fr is injective on finite subgroups of Aut Fr; however, not all finite subgroups of Out Fr lift to finite subgroups of Aut Fr.

In the thirty years since it was proved that 0, 1 and 144 were the only perfect squares in the Fibonacci sequence [1, 9], several generalisations have been proved, but many problems remain. Thus it has been shown that 0, 1 and 8 are the only Fibonacci cubes [6] but there seems to be no method available to prove the conjecture that 0, 1, 8 and 144 are the only perfect powers.

The main object of study in this paper is the quantized Weyl algebra which arises from the work of Maltsiniotis [10] on noncommutative differential calculus. This algebra has been studied from the point of view of noncommutative ring theory by various authors including Alev and Dumas [1], the second author [9], Cauchon [3], and Goodearl and Lenagan [5]. In [9], it is shown that has n normal elements zi and, subject to a condition on the parameters, the localization obtained on inverting these elements is simple of Krull and global dimension n. It is easy to show that each of these normal elements generates a height one prime ideal and that these are all the height one prime ideals of . The purpose of this paper is to determine, under a stronger condition on the parameters, all the prime ideals of and to compare the prime spectrum with that of a related algebra . This algebra has more symmetric defining relations than those of but it shares the same simple localization which again is obtained by inverting n normal elements zi. Like the alternative algebra can be regarded as an algebra of skew differential (or difference) operators on the coordinate ring of quantum n-space.

In the paper [3] the following lemma was proved.

A group G is called Dedekindian if every subgroup ofG is normal in G.

The structure of the finite Dedekindian groups is well-known [3, Satz 7.12]. They are either abelian or direct products of the form Q × A × B, where Q is the quaternion group of order 8, Ais abelian of odd order and exp(B) ≤ 2.

In [5] Professor Hooley announced without proof the following result which is a variant of well-known work by Heilbronn [4]and Danicic [3] (see [1]).

A Banach space operator has property (δ) if and only if it is the quotient of a decomposable operator, equivalently, if and only if its adjoint has Bishop's property (β). Within this class of operators, it is shown that quasisimilarity preserves essential spectra.

A famous theorem of Kegel and Wielandt states that every finite group which is the product of two nilpotent subgroups is soluble (see [1], Theorem 2.4.3). On the other hand, it is an open question whether an arbitrary group factorized by two nilpotent subgroups satisfies some solubility condition, and only a few partial results are known on this subject. In particular, Kegel [6] obtained an affirmative answer in the case of linear groups, and in the same article he also proved that every locally finite group which is the product of two locally nilpotent FC-subgroups is locally soluble. Recall that a group G is said to be an FC-group if every element of G has only finitely many conjugates. Moreover, Kazarin [5] showed that if the locally finite group G = AB is factorized by an abelian subgroup A and a locally nilpotent subgroup B, then G is locally soluble. The aim of this article is to prove the following extension of the Kegel–Wielandt theorem to locally finite products of hypercentral groups.

The most classical sufficient condition for the fixed point property of non-expansive mappings FPP in Banach spaces is the normal structure (see [6] and [10]). (See definitions below). Although the normal structure is preserved under finite lp-product of Banach spaces, (1<p≤∞), (see Landes, [12], [13]), not too many positive results are known about the normal structure of an l1,-product of two Banach spaces with this property. In fact, this question was explicitly raised by T. Landes [12], and M. A. Khamsi [9] and T. Domíinguez Benavides [1] proved partial affirmative answers. Here we give wider conditions yielding normal structure for the product X1⊗1X2.

Throughout kwill denote a field. If a group Γ acts on aset A we say an element is Γ-orbital if its orbit is finite and write ΔΓ(A) for the subset of such elements. Let I be anideal of a group algebra kA; we denote by I+ the normal subgrou(I+1)∩A of A. A subgroup B of an abelian torsion-free group A is said to be dense in A if A/B is a torsion-group. Let I be an ideal of a commutative ring K; then the spectrum Sp(I) of I is the set of all prime ideals P of K such that I≤P. If R is a ring, M is an R-module and x ɛ M we denote by the annihilator of x in R. We recall that a group Γ is said to have finite torsion-free rank if it has a finite series in which each factoris either infinite cyclic or locally finite; its torsion-free rank r0(Γ) is then defined to be the number of infinite cyclic factors in such a series.

The introduction of curvature considerations in the past decade into Combinatorial Group Theory has had a profound effect on the study of infinite discrete groups. In particular, the theory of negatively curved groups has enjoyed significant and extensive development since Cannon's seminal study of cocompact hyperbolic groups in the early eighties [7]. Unarguably the greatest influence on the direction of this development has been Gromov's tour de force, his foundational essay in [12] entitled Hyperbolic Groups. Therein Gromov hints at the prospect of developing a corresponding theory of “non-positively curved groups” in his non-definition (Gromov's terminology) of a semihyperbolic group as a group that “looks as if it admits a discrete co-compact isometric action on a space of nonpositive curvature”; [12, p. 81]. Such a development is now occurring and is closely related to the other notable outgrowth of the theory of negatively curved groups, that of automatic groups [10]; we mention here the works [3] and [6] as developments of a theory of nonpositively curved groups along with Chapter 6 of Gromov's more recent treatise [13]. A natural question that serves both to guide and organize the developing theory is: to what extent is the well-developed theory of negatively curved groups reflected in and subsumed under the developing theory of nonpositively curved groups? Our overall interest is in one aspect of this question—namely, as the question relates to the boundaries of groups and spaces: can one define the boundary of a nonpositively curved group intrinsically in a way that generalizes that of negatively curved groups and retains some of their essential features?

Throughout, R denotes a commutative domain with 1, and Q (≠R) its field of quotients, which is viewed here as an R-module. The symbol K will stand for the R-module Q/R, while R denotes the multiplicative monoid R/0.

In this paper we consider examples of orders in restricted power semigroups, where for any semigroup Sthe restricted power semigroup is given by with multiplication XY = {xy:x ∈ X, y ∈ Y} for all X, Y ∈ . We use the notion of order introduced by Fountain and Petrich in [2] which first appears in the form used here in [3]. If S is a subsemigroup of Q then S is an order in Q and Q is a semigroup of quotients of S if any q ∈ Q can be written as q = a*b = cd* where a, b, c, d ∈ S is the inverse of a(d) in a subgroup of Q, and in addition, all elements of S satisfying a weak cancellability condition called square-cancellability lie in a subgroup of Q.

We present an elementary proof of the theorem, usually attributed to Noether, that if L/K is a tame finite Galois extension of local fields, then is a free -module where Γ=Gal(L/K. The attribution to Noether is slightly misleading as she only states and proves the result in the case where the residual characteristic of K does not divide the order of Γ [4]. In this case is a maximal order in KΓ which is not true for general groups Γ. There is an elegant proof in the standard reference [2], but this relies on a difficult result in representation theory due to Swan. Our proof depends on a close examination of the structure of tame local extensions, and uses only elementary facts about local fields. It also gives an explicit construction of a generator element, and the same proof works both for localizations of number fields and of global function fields.
