Wearable electrochromic devices are considered as the essential components for the development of smart clothing with the intelligent sensing, actuating, and displaying functions. In this study, the electrochromic composite flexible membranes of polyaniline (PANI) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) were fabricated by in situ polymerization of aniline monomer in the presence of RGO dispersion. The effects of RGO concentration on the morphology, chemical structure, crystallinity, and electrochromic behavior of the composite membranes were studied. Our experimental results show that the conductivity of PANI/RGO composite membrane increases with the increasing of RGO concentration from 0.1 to 0.25 wt%, and the highest conductivity is 3.57 S/cm. An improved electrochemical performance with good electrochromic cycle characteristic of the PANI/RGO composite can be obtained, which shows a wide color range from green to black compared with the PANI membrane that ranging from green to dark blue. This research provides a systematical investigation of flexible PANI-based electrochromic membrane, which has the potential application in the field of wearable electrochromic devices in the future.

Cadmium telluride (CdTe) is one of the leading photovoltaic technologies with a market share of around 5%. However, there still exist challenges to fabricate a rear contact for efficient transport of photogenerated holes. Here, etching effects of various iodine compounds including elemental iodine (I2), ammonium iodide (NH4I), mixture of elemental iodine and NH4I (I−/I3− etching), and formamidinium iodide were investigated. The treated CdTe surfaces were investigated using Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The CdTe devices were completed with or without treatments and tested under simulated AM1.5G solar spectrum to find photoconversion efficiency (PCE). Based on Raman spectra, XRD patterns, and surface morphology, it was shown that treatment with iodine compounds produced Te-rich surface on CdTe films, and temperature-dependent current–voltage characteristics showed reduced back barrier heights, which are essential for the formation of ohmic contact and reduce contact resistance. Based on current–voltage characteristics, the treatment enhanced open-circuit voltage (VOC) up to 841 mV, fill factor (FF) up to 78.2%, and PCE up to 14.0% compared with standard untreated CdTe devices (VOC ∼ 814 mV, FF ∼ 74%, and PCE ∼ 12.7%) with copper/gold back contact.

Highly radioactive waste is incorporated into a glass matrix to convert it into a safe, passive form suitable for long-term storage and disposal. It is currently known that alpha decay can generate gaseous species, which can nucleate into bubbles, either through the production of helium or from ballistic collisions with the glass network that liberate oxygen. An effective method to probe this phenomenon utilizes ion beams to either directly implant helium or investigate the damage due to ballistic collisions. This paper provides an overview of the methodology, summarizes the results of current studies, and draws comparisons between them. We find that the irradiation scheme as well as the temperature and composition of the glass are important in determining whether bubble formation will occur. We also explore how analytical techniques can promote bubble formation and suggest avenues for further work.

Anti-solvent treatment assisted crystallization is currently one of the most widely used methods to obtain high-quality perovskite films ascribed to its great operability. However, choosing a proper anti-solvent toward high-quality perovskite film for perovskite solar cells (PSCs) remains elusive. In this study, we qualitatively evaluate the impact of anti-solvent treatment on the grain growth and phase composition of perovskite by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, and UV-vis absorption measurement, etc. The results demonstrate that the chemical groups in anti-solvents also affect the formation of perovskites, and anti-solvents with a low boiling point and good polarity contribute to the superior efficiency and reproducibility of PSCs. The device prepared using ether as an anti-solvent exhibits the best power conversion efficiency of 18.47%. The results indicate a new path toward selecting an ideal anti-solvent to improve the performance of PSCs.

Raman spectroscopy is a fundamental tool for the characterization of two-dimensional materials. It provides insights into the electronic and vibrational properties of these materials and is particularly rich in features when the incident laser energy approaches the electronic energy transition of the material. Among these features, the double resonance Raman process provides important information on the electron, phonon, and electron–phonon properties. It was on the study of carbon-related materials that the double resonance bands sparkled showing their potential and, since then, have been deeply searched in the study of novel 2D materials. Here, the authors review the double resonance Raman process in 2D materials focusing on graphene and semiconducting MoS2 highlighting the origin of the bands mediated by the two-phonon and phonon–defect processes. The authors discuss the observed properties of the double resonance bands and compare the processes for graphene and MoS2 to find guiding principles for the appearance of double resonance bands. The authors also discuss the new findings of the intervalley scattering process in transition metal dichalcogenides. A brief discussion of the defect-induced bands in both materials is also presented.

The dynamic response of structured materials, such as regular lattices, is nontrivial partly due to the interaction of mechanical waves throughout the structure and free surfaces as the material is dynamically compressed. The existence of an elastic precursor wave in additively manufactured lattices was recently shown to match theoretical predictions and simulation results. Following up on this work, we have investigated the behavior of the elastic precursor with propagation distance, impact speed, and impact material. Through a series of gas gun experiments coupled to X-ray phase contrast imaging measurements and complementary simulations, the elastic precursor wavespeed appears to be nearly independent of impact speed and impact material. We observed evidence for the sustained elastic wave propagation through many unit cells at four significantly different impact conditions. We compared these results with direct numerical simulations of the experiments and found good agreement.

Oriented attachment (OA) is a particle-based crystallization pathway in which nanocrystals self-assemble in solution and attach along certain crystallographic direction often forming highly organized three-dimensional crystal morphologies. The pathway offers the potential for a general synthetic approach of hierarchical nanomaterials, in which multiscale structural control is achieved by manipulating the interfacial nucleation and self-assembly of nanoscale building blocks. Here, the current status of the development of a predictive theoretical framework for modeling crystallization by OA is reviewed. A particular emphasis is made on recent developments in understanding the microscopic details of solvent-mediated forces that drive nanocrystal reorientation and alignment for face-selective attachment. Interactions arising from the correlated solvent dynamics at particle interfaces emerge as the main sources of long-range face-specific interparticle forces and short-range torque for fine particle alignment into lattice matching configuration. These findings shift the focus of the experimental and theoretical research of OA onto the detailed study of interfacial solvent structure and dynamics.

Fabrication and characterization of solution-processed, all-inorganic quantum dots (QDs) light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) incorporating colloidal CdSe/ZnS QDs are presented. Using a simple solvothermal process, Cu-doped NiO nanocrystals were fabricated and applied as a hole transport layer in all inorganic QLEDs. Cu-doped NiO nanocrystals are ascribed to bunsenite cubic structure. The transmittance of the film is more than 81%. The hole-only devices of Au/QDs/Cu–NiO/ITO structures showed that 5% mol Cu doped NiO film obtained the largest hole current. The resulting devices show pure QD electroluminescent emissions with a maximum electroluminescence brightness of 2258 cd/m2 after doping 5% mol Cu in NiO, which is almost 4-fold compared with that of intrinsic NiO due to the enhanced carrier concentration and conductivity. The current efficiency and EQE of the assembled all-inorganic QLED exhibited the maximum values of 1.18 cd/A and 1.223%, respectively.

Nanostructured multiphase metallic materials present extraordinary properties, such as high strength, enhanced fatigue and radiation resistance, and thermal stability, compared to conventional bulk metallic materials. Previous research studies have shown that their deformation and fracture behavior are dominated by defect interactions at internal interfaces. In situ straining, including nanoindentation, compression, and tension, in a transmission electron microscope (TEM) has emerged as a powerful tool to investigate the physics of defect–interface interactions at the nano-scale and even atomic scale. The mechanistic insights gained from these experiments coupled with dislocation theory and atomistic modeling has helped develop a fundamental understanding of the mechanical properties. In this article, through some recent investigations on observing dislocation and interface activities, crack propagation, and nanopillar compression, we present current progress in utilizing in situ TEM straining to examine interface-dominated deformation mechanisms.

In this work, carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-templated binuclear metallophthalocyanines (MTAPcCF3)2C (M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) assemblies (MTAPcCF3)2C–COOH–CNTs are designed and obtained. Whereafter, the structure and morphology of target products are analyzed by many means such as infrared, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The electrocatalytic performances of lithium-thionyl chloride battery catalyzed by (MTAPcCF3)2C–COOH–CNTs were carried out. The result shows that all catalysts can improve the battery performance including the discharge time and the initial voltage. The catalytic performance of (MTAPcCF3)2C–COOH–CNTs is ordered following the central metal: Mn > Fe > Ni > Co > Cu > Zn. The cell capacity catalyzed by optimal catalyst (MnTAPcCF3)2C–COOH–CNTs can expand to 28.08 mAˑh, with increase by 142.07%, and the (MnTAPcCF3)2C–COOH–CNTs can extend the discharge time to 551.6 s. Besides, the reaction mechanism is presented on the basis of cyclic voltammetry measurements.

Toroidal (ring-like) structures are common in organic chemistry, but at the nanoscale level, the inorganic nanorings and nanotori are limited and represented mainly by carbon, several p- and noble metals (Ag, Au, Al, and Au/Co/Au), metal and nonmetal oxides (ZnO, MoO2, Fe2O3, and SiO2), hydroxides (Co(OH)2), and salts (PbI2 and metal selenides), and some combinations of carbon nanotori with fullerenes and carbon chains, as well as doped nanorings, are known. The nanotori are closely related to ball-type nanostructures as nano-onions, nanoballs, and nanospheres. Despite their relative low existence, they possess several useful properties and respective applications as isolators, sensors, optoelectronics, as traps for atoms and ions, and counterparts in lubricants, thus causing a certain interest in their development. The properties of nanotori have been studied mainly by DFT calculations. Several nanorings possess stabilities up to 3000 K before unfolding, multiresonant properties and magneto–optical activity, paramagnetism, and ferromagnetism. The carbon nanorings are studied considerably better, being compared with other compounds. This review summarizes the state of the art of all available inorganic toroidal nanostructures, believing that a considerable higher number of inorganic systems might be prepared in this form, taking into account their unusual properties.

The effects of specimen size, Hall–Petch (H-P) grain or subgrain size, particle size plus spacing, and crack size on the yield strength, plastic deformation, and fracturing properties of crystalline materials are described on a dislocation mechanics basis. The size effects are assessed at relevant macro- and/or micro-and/or nano-scale dimensions; in the latter case, at the upper-limiting strength levels. The description is applied mostly to face-centered cubic (FCC), body-centered cubic (BCC), and hexagonal close-packed (HCP) metals but also involves grain size/particle size–dependent (composite) steel material behaviors. Competition is described for the role of dislocation pile-ups versus hole-joining mechanisms for ductile failure. Grain size–dependent microhardness and strain rate sensitivity measurements are presented for nano-grain size strengthening and grain size weakening, respectively. An intrinsic size effect is demonstrated for silicon crystal nano-indentation hardness testing, which, on microscale loading, leads to evaluation of crack size dependence and, for polycrystalline alumina, to associated H-P behavior for the fracture mechanics stress intensity.

In the present work, a β-Ti alloy (Ti–15V–3Sn–3Cr–3Al) was unidirectionally cold rolled to 80% thickness reduction, followed by recrystallization at two temperatures: (i) 1013 K and (ii) 1053 K. The microstructural developments were studied using light optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy X-ray peak profile analysis, and electron backscattered diffraction. The bulk texture of deformed and fully recrystallized samples was studied using X-ray diffraction. The deformed microstructures showed the presence of high fraction of shear bands, and these bands were preferentially formed in γ-fiber grains than in the grains with other orientations. Cold rolled β-Ti alloy samples were fully recrystallized in 10 min at 1053 K and in 90 min at 1013 K. Strong α- and γ-fibers were formed after 80% cold rolling, while strong discontinuous γ-fiber (with very strong {111}〈112〉 component) was formed after complete recrystallization. Oriented nucleation was found to be the dominant mechanism for the development of recrystallization texture.

Numerous studies have reported that amyloid-beta 42 (Aβ-42) protein is a high-profile risk factor associated with the onset and progression of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Accumulation of extracellular senile plaques, synaptic degeneration, and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles were recorded as essential features that facilitate the onset of Aβ-42, resulting in AD. Hence, we attempted a new screening technique to discover potential inhibitors against Aβ-42 using an in silico deep neural network approach. We screened PubChem compounds library and found wgx-50 as a potential inhibitor of Aβ-42. Also, synergistic effects of wgx-50–gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) complex induced significant inhibition of Aβ-42, compared with those of wgx-50 alone. Further, molecular docking analysis, systems biology approach, and time course simulation confirmed that synergistic effects of wgx-50–AuNPs complex have potential application in the treatment for AD. Additionally, we proposed the biological circuit for AD induced by Aβ-42 that can be used to monitor the effect of drugs on AD.

The mechanical properties of core–shell bimetallic composite nanowires, forming the bases of nanoporous metallic foams, have been investigated and compared with pure metal nanowires using molecular dynamics simulations. In the current study, pure copper and gold nanowires under uniaxial loading were tested at room temperature and compared to composite nanowires of the same materials (core) with a nickel coating (shell). The core radius ranged from 1 to 15 nm, and the shell thickness ranged from 0.1 to 5 nm. The tension strain was performed along the [001] direction under room temperature. Both coherent and semi-coherent composite nanowires were studied, and the effect of coating layer thickness was investigated. The strengthening mechanisms of the core–shell structures due to the presence of the two different types of interfaces were investigated for various nickel thicknesses. The atomistic simulation results revealed that the addition of the nickel shell strengthens the structure when the layer thickness exceeds a critical value.

Addition of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to copper materials significantly enhances their properties. However, the performance of CNTs/Cu composites is often not as good as expected mainly because of difficulties in controlling growth and uniform dispersion of CNTs in the matrix. Our study provides an effective way to prepare CNTs/CuCr and CNTs/CuCrY composites using chemical vapor deposition. The morphology and structure of these composites were characterized by scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy to understand how Y incorporation affects properties of these composites. Our results showed that addition of 0.1 wt% Y enhances the catalytic properties of Cr and helps to obtain purer and pristine Cu substrate. We also studied tensile strength, electric conductivity, corrosion, and wear resistance of these composites. When Y was added, composite properties improved significantly. Tensile strength and corrosion resistance increased by 35.21 and 53.28%, respectively. Electric conductivity increased to 90.9% International Annealed Copper Standard and the coefficient of friction reduced to 0.3.

The formation of low-angle grain boundaries (LABs) in the rejoined platforms of a Ni-based single crystal superalloy under different directional solidification rates was investigated by the experimental investigation and the ProCAST simulation. The results showed that the growth morphology and orientation evolution of dendrites in the platforms were different under the withdrawal rates in the range of 60–100 μm/s and then resulted in different types of LABs. At lower withdrawal rates, the longitudinal LABs were common in the rejoined platforms. Both the sliver defects and the orientation deviation of original primary dendrites from two independent growth paths could cause the longitudinal LABs in the platforms. At higher withdrawal rates, the dendrite growth patterns were more complex and the secondary branches with lateral growth tended to deviate from their original orientation, eventually leading to the formation of some transverse LABs. Finally, some suggestions to prevent the formation of different LABs are provided.

In certain alloy systems, a liquid of a fixed composition freezes to form a mixture of two solid phases, one of which may be faceted and the other nonfaceted (i.e., a ‘degenerate’ or irregular eutectic). The role of trace metallic additions on the microstructure of the eutectic has received significant research interest over the last half-century, culminating in advances in theoretical, computational, and experimental fronts. The drastic morphological, topological, and crystallographic changes that accompany metallic additions strongly influence the mechanical properties of the as-synthesized eutectic microstructure. In this review, we survey the mechanistic origins leading to a modified eutectic microstructure and describe the current status in the field of eutectic solidification in the presence of metallic modifying agents. We will also discuss the remaining challenges and future opportunities that would help move the field forward and enable bottom–up tuning of the complex degenerate microstructures to technological demands.

[K0.5Na0.5NbO3]1−x[BaNi0.5Nb0.5O3−δ]x (KNBNNO, 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.3) films have been fabricated on different substrates for the first time, using a modified chemical solution deposition method. The microstructure, optical properties, ferromagnetism, and substrate effects of KNBNNO films were assessed, and we found that BaNi0.5Nb0.5O3−δ (BNNO) content was a key factor in determining the properties of the final products. The lower band gap of KNBNNO is due to the band-to-band transition from hybridized Ni 3d and O 2p to Nb 4d states. Moreover, with increasing x from 0 to 0.3, the magnetism transition process of the samples from diamagnetism to ferromagnetism may originate from the competition between ferromagnetic exchange interactions in Ni2+–VO2−–Ni2+ and superexchange interactions in Ni2+–Ni2+. Notably, absorption behaviors in the visible light wave band for KNBNNO films have been realized, which makes it possible to use KNBNNO films for perovskite solar cell applications.

The effect of severe warm rolling on microstructure and texture homogeneities was investigated in a lamellar (L12 + B2) AlCoCrFeNi2.1 eutectic high-entropy alloy (EHEA). The EHEA 90% warm-rolled at 400 °C showed disordering of the L12 phase and a remarkable increase in hardness. A much finer microstructure was observed on ND-RD (Normal Direction-Rolling Direction) plane as compared with that on the RD-TD (Rolling Direction-Transverse Direction) plane. The L12/Face Centered Cubic (FCC) phase developed α-fiber texture ND//〈110〉 with a particularly strong brass ({110}〈112〉) component, while the B2 phase developed the usual RD (//〈110〉) and ND (//〈111〉) fibers. Nevertheless, inhomogeneities in texture were noticed. Upon annealing at 800 °C, the ND-RD showed an ultrafine microduplex structure, while the RD-TD showed a retained lamellar structure. A rather uniform microduplex structure evolved after annealing at 1200 °C due to the accelerated kinetics of transformation at higher temperatures. The L12/FCC phase showed the retention of the α-fiber components, while the B2 phase showed stronger ND-fiber after annealing, although inhomogeneities in texture existed.
