Fifty to eighty-five percent of schizophrenic patients are impaired on ocular pursuit paradigms. However, results regarding the relatives are more discordant. The aim of this study was to investigate whether eye movement disorders could be a vulnerability marker of schizophrenia.

Objectives: Antisaccade error rate has been proposed to be one of the most promising endophenotypes for schizophrenia. Increased error rate in patients has been associated with working memory, attention and other executive function impairments. The relationship between antisaccade error rate and other neuropsychological processes in patients compared to healthy controls has not been explored in depth. This study aimed to replicate the finding of heightened antisaccade error rate in patients and determine which cognitive processes were most strongly associated with antisaccade error rate in both patients and controls. In addition, the study investigated whether different antisaccade task paradigms engage different cognitive processes. Methods: One hundred and ninety-one participants (54 patients with schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder and 137 controls) completed the antisaccade task, which included both gap and step task parameters. Neuropsychological measures were obtained using the MCCB and the Stroop task. Results: The current study replicated a pronounced antisaccade error rate deficit in patients. In patients, working memory variance was most significantly associated with antisaccade errors made during the step condition, while attentional processes were most associated with errors made during the gap condition. In controls, overall global cognitive performance was most associated with antisaccade rates for both gap and step conditions. Conclusions: The current study demonstrates that in schizophrenia patients, but not controls, elevated antisaccade error rate is associated with attention and working memory, but not with global cognitive impairment or psychopathological processes. Our novel findings demonstrate that the gap and step conditions of the antisaccade task engage different cognitive processes. (JINS, 2019, 25, 174–183)

Twelve healthy subjects underwent investigation of averaged (electroencephalogram) EEG potentials during preparation for motor activity and in the latent period (LP) of visually evoked saccades by presentation of stimuli using Posner's (1980) design of “cost-benefit.” It has been shown that covert spatial attention orientation leads to an increase in amplitude and decrease in latency of presaccadic initiation potential peaks within the saccadic latent period (LP) (P-100, N –50). Processes of covert orientation of attention during the interstimulus interval period of anticipation of the target stimulus correlate with the increase of slow negativity of fronto-parietal-temporal localization. Spatial-temporal changes of presaccadic potentials are evidence of the fact that orientation of attention during motor preparation and saccadic initiation is reflected in intensification of fronto-parietal networks of saccadic control and attention, activating the fronto-medio-thalamic and thalamo-parietal modulating systems.

Though many previous studies have reported enhanced cognitive control in bilinguals, few have investigated if such control is modulated by language proficiency. Here, we examined the inhibitory control of high and low proficient Hindi–English bilinguals on an oculomotor Stroop task. Subjects were asked to make a saccade as fast as possible towards the appropriate colour patch among competitors and distractors suppressing an eye movement evoked by the meaning of the word. High proficient bilinguals quickly oriented their attention towards the correct colour patch while effectively controlling the Stroop interference compared with low proficient subjects, on both colour and direction words. High proficient bilinguals also had fewer saccadic errors and demonstrated overall faster saccadic latency on all trial types. The results provide strong evidence for enhanced oculomotor control in proficient bilinguals compared with the less proficient ones.

Purely parallel neural networks can model object recognition in brief displays – the same conditions under which illusory conjunctions (the incorrect combination of features into perceived objects in a stimulus array) have been demonstrated empirically (Treisman 1986; Treisman & Gelade 1980). Correcting errors of illusory conjunction is the “tag-assignment” problem for a purely parallel processor: the problem of assigning a spatial tag to nonspatial features, feature combinations, and objects. This problem must be solved to model human object recognition over a longer time scale. Our model simulates both the parallel processes that may underlie illusory conjunctions and the serial processes that may solve the tag-assignment problem in normal perception. One component of the model extracts pooled features and another provides attentional tags that correct illusory conjunctions. Our approach addresses two questions: (i) How can objects be identified from simultaneously attended features in a parallel, distributed representation? (ii) How can the spatial selectional requirements of such an attentional process be met by a separation of pathways for spatial and nonspatial processing? Our analysis of these questions yields a neurally plausible simulation of tag assignment based on synchronizing feature processing activity in a spatial focus of attention.

The trajectories of saccadic eye movements evoked electrically from many brain structures are dependent to some degree on the initial position of the eye. Under certain conditions, likely to occur in stimulation experiments, local feedback models of the saccadic system can yield eye movements which behave in this way. The models in question assume that an early processing stage adds an internal representation of eye position to retinal error to yield a signal representing target position with respect to the head. The saccadic system is driven by the difference between this signal and one representing the current position of the eye. Albano & Wurtz (1982) pointed out that lesions perturbing the computation of eye position with respect to the head can result in initial position dependence of visually evoked saccades. It is shown here that position-dependent saccades will also result if electrical stimulation evokes a signal equivalent to retinal error but fails to effect a complete addition of eye position to this signal. Also, when multiple or staircase saccades are produced, as during long stimulus trains, they will have identical directions but decrease progressively in amplitude by a factor related to the fraction of added eye position.

The cervico-ocular reflex (COR) was investigated in the chameleon. Two kinds of responses were observed by oscillating the body (sine-wave stimuli) in the fixed-head animal: a "smooth response" of very low gain (around 0.08) and a saccadic response composed of 1–12 saccades per cycle of stimulation (depending on the stimulation frequency). Both responses were elicited in the compensatory direction (same direction as the stimulation) and exhibited a frequency dependence with low-pass properties. The saccadic response was especially developed and displayed a higher gain (up to 0.4) than the smooth response. In darkness, the saccades were triggered near the zero point (head-body alignment), whereas in the presence of a fixed visual surround they were elicited more regularly throughout the stimulation cycle. The amplitude of saccades was increased in the light. Consequently, the gain and the phase lag of the saccadic reponse were enhanced by the visual input. No visuo-cervical interaction was observed for the smooth response. Oscillating the body at a constant velocity (seesaw or ramp stimuli) revealed a frequency effect on the number of saccades (during a cycle of stimulation), but not on the gain of the response. Increasing the amplitude of oscillations augmented only very slightly the amplitude of saccades and consequently decreased the gain. Hence, the best working range of the saccadic response corresponds to body or head movements of low amplitude (up to ±20 deg) and low frequency (up to 0.25 Hz), and is improved by a visual input. These properties are discussed on a comparative point of view. It is proposed that, in chameleons, the saccadic response could contribute to gaze stabilization and add to the vestibulo-ocular and the optokinetic responses.

The nonretinotopic portion of the macaque pulvinar complex is interconnected with the occipitoparietal and occipitotemporal transcortical visual systems where information about the location and motion of a visual object or its form and color are modulated by eye movements and attention. We recorded from single cells in and about the border of the dorsal portion of the lateral pulvinar and the adjacent medial pulvinar of awake behaving Macaca mulatta in order to determine how the properties of these two functionally dichotomous cortical systems were represented. We found a class of pulvinar neurons that responded differentially to ten different patterns or broadband wavelengths (colors). Thirty-four percent of cells tested responded to the presentation of at least one of the pattern or color stimuli. These cells often discharged to several of the patterns or colors, but responded best to only one or two of them, and 86% were found to have statistically significant pattern and/or color preferences. Pattern/color preferential cells had an average latency of 79.1 ± 46.0 ms (range 31–186 ms), responding well before most inferotemporal cortical cell responses. Visually guided and memory-guided saccade tasks showed that 58% of pattern/color preferential cells also had saccade-related properties e.g. directional presaccadic and postsaccadic discharges, and inhibition of activity during the saccade. In the pulvinar, the mean presaccadic response latency was earlier, and the mean postsaccadic response latency was later, than those reported for parietal cortex. We also discovered that the strength of response to patterns or colors changed depending upon the behavioral setting. In comparison to trials in which the monkey fixated dead ahead during passive presentations of pattern and color stimuli, 92% of the cells showed attenuated responses to the same passive presentation of patterns and colors during fixation when these trials were interleaved with trials which also required active saccades to pattern and color targets in the periphery. We conclude that properties which represent the functionally dichotomous object and spatial visual systems are found together in single pulvinar neurons and that the responses of these cells to pattern or color stimuli are influenced by the focus of spatial attention. The pulvinar is the first structure in the brain shown to have neurons which integrate both object and spatial properties and the response latencies indicate that this information is processed before that in cortex. These results are discussed in terms of role of the pulvinar in visual attention as well as its unique role in providing both object feature and spatial location information to the inferotemporal cortex.

Saccades evoked electrically from the deep layers of the superior colliculus have been examined in the alert cat with its head fixed. Amplitudes of the vertical and horizontal components varied linearly with the starting position of the eye. The slopes of the linear-regression lines provided an estimate of the sensitivity of these components to initial eye position. In observations on 29 sites in nine cats, the vertical and horizontal components of saccades evoked from a given site were rarely influenced to the same degree by initial eye position. For most sites, the horizontal component was more sensitive than the vertical component. Sensitivities of vertical and horizontal components were lowest near the representations of the horizontal and vertical meridians, respectively, of the collicular retinotopic map, but otherwise exhibited no systematic retinotopic dependence. Estimates of component amplitudes for saccades evoked from the center of the oculomotor range also diverged significantly from those predicted from the retinotopic map. The results of this and previous studies indicate that electrical stimulation of the cat's superior colliculus cannot yield a unique oculomotor map or one that is in register everywhere with the sensory retinotopic map. Several features of these observations suggest that electrical stimulation of the colliculus produces faulty activation of a saccadic control system that computes target position with respect to the head and that small and large saccades are controlled differently.

Cognitive impairments in patients with basal ganglia dysfunction are primarily revealed where performance relies on internal, voluntary control processes. Evidence suggests that this also extends to impaired control of more automatic processes, including visuospatial attention. The present study used a non-predictive peripheral cueing paradigm to compare and contrast visuospatial deficits in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) with those previously revealed in patients with Huntington's disease (HD) (Fielding et al., 2006a). Compared to age-matched controls, both PD and HD patients exhibited increased distractibility or poor fixation, however only PD patients responded erroneously to cue stimuli more frequently than control subjects. All subjects demonstrated initial facilitation for valid versus invalid cues following the shorter stimulus-onset asynchronies (SOAs) and a performance decrement at the longer SOAs (inhibition of return), although there was a clear differentiation between these groups for immediate SOAs. Unlike both control and PD subjects, where IOR manifested between 350 and 1000 msec, IOR was evident as early as 150 msec for HD patients. Further, for PD patients, spatially valid cues resulted in hyper-reflexivity following 150 msec SOAs, with saccadic latencies shorter than those generated in response to un-cued targets. Thus contrasting deficits were revealed in PD and HD, emphasizing the important contribution of the basal ganglia in the control of more automatic behaviors (JINS, 2006, 12, 657–667.)

The image on the retina is almost never static. Eye, head, and body movements, and externally generated motion create rapid and continual changes in the retinal image (“active vision”). Virtually all vision in animals such as primates, which make saccades as often as 3–4 times/s, is based on information that must be derived from the first few hundred milliseconds after sudden, global changes in the retinal image. These changes may be accompanied by large changes in area mean luminance, as well as higher order image contrast statistics. This study investigated how retinal ganglion cell responses, whose response properties have been typically studied and defined in a stable stimulus regime, are affected by sudden changes in mean luminance that are characteristic of active vision. Specifically, the steady-state responses of retinal ganglion cells to static or moving square-wave grating stimuli were recorded in an isolated, superfused rabbit eyecup preparation and compared to responses after saccade-like changes in luminance. The manner of coding after luminance changes was different for different ganglion cell classes; both suppression and enhancement of responses to patterns following luminance changes were found. Brisk-transient Off cells unambiguously signaled the darkening of the overall image, but were also modulated by the subsequently appearing grating stimulus. Several types of On-center cell behavior were observed, ranging from strong suppression of the subsequent response by luminance changes, to strong enhancement. Overall, most ganglion cells distinguished static patterns after a luminance change via differences in their spike discharges nearly as well as before, although there were clear asymmetries between the On and Off pathways. Changes in mean luminance in some ganglion cells, such as On–Off directionally selective ganglion cells, could create large phase shifts in the response to patterned, moving stimuli, although these stimuli were still detected immediately after luminance changes. The results of this study show that the image dynamics of active vision may be a fundamental challenge for the visual system because of strong effects on retinal ganglion cell function. However, rapid extraction of unambiguous information after luminance changes appears to be encoded in differences in the spike discharges in different retinal ganglion cell classes. Asymmetries among ganglion cell classes in sensitivity to luminance changes may provide a basis by which some provide the “context” for interpreting the firing of others.

The frequency with which express saccades are generated under a variety of conditions in rhesus monkeys was examined. Increasing the gap time between fixation spot termination and target onset increased express saccade frequency but was progressively less effective in doing so as the number of target positions in the sample was increased. Express saccades were rarely produced when two targets were presented simultaneously and the choice of either of which was rewarded; a temporal asynchrony of only 17 ms between the targets reinstated express saccade generation. Express saccades continued to be generated when the vergence or pursuit systems was coactivated with the saccadic system.

The E-Z Reader model (Reichle et al. 1998; 1999) provides a theoretical framework for understanding how word identification, visual processing, attention, and oculomotor control jointly determine when and where the eyes move during reading. In this article, we first review what is known about eye movements during reading. Then we provide an updated version of the model (E-Z Reader 7) and describe how it accounts for basic findings about eye movement control in reading. We then review several alternative models of eye movement control in reading, discussing both their core assumptions and their theoretical scope. On the basis of this discussion, we conclude that E-Z Reader provides the most comprehensive account of eye movement control during reading. Finally, we provide a brief overview of what is known about the neural systems that support the various components of reading, and suggest how the cognitive constructs of our model might map onto this neural architecture.

Abnormalities during a smooth pursuit eye movement task (SPEM) are common in schizophrenic patients and their relatives. This study assessed various components of SPEM performance in first-degree unaffected relatives of schizophrenic patients. One hundred individuals with schizophrenia, 137 unaffected first-degree relatives, and 69 normal controls completed a 16.7°/s SPEM task. Smooth pursuit gain, catch-up saccades (CUS), large anticipatory saccades, and leading saccades (LS) were identified. Groups were compared with parametric and admixture analyses. Schizophrenic patients performed more poorly than unaffected relatives and normals on gain, CUS, and LS. Unaffected relatives were more frequently impaired than normals only on gain and LS. Relatives of childhood-onset and adult-onset probands had similar impairments. Gain and frequency of leading saccades may be genetic endophenotypes in childhood-onset and adult-onset schizophrenia.

We studied the visuomotor activity of corticotectal (CT) cells in two visual cortical areas [area 17 and the posteromedial lateral suprasylvian cortex (PMLS)] of the cat. The cats were trained in simple oculomotor tasks, and head position was fixed. Most CT cells in both cortical areas gave a vigorous discharge to a small stimulus used to control gaze when it fell within the retinotopically defined visual field. However, the vigor of the visual response did not predict latency to initiate a saccade, saccade velocity, amplitude, or even if a saccade would be made, minimizing any potential role these cells might have in premotor or attentional processes. Most CT cells in both areas were selective for direction of stimulus motion, and cells in PMLS showed a direction preference favoring motion away from points of central gaze. CT cells did not discharge with eye movements in the dark. During eye movements in the light, many CT cells in area 17 increased their activity. In contrast, cells in PMLS, including CT cells, were generally unresponsive during saccades. Paradoxically, cells in PMLS responded vigorously to stimuli moving at saccadic velocities, indicating that the oculomotor system suppresses visual activity elicited by moving the retina across an illuminated scene. Nearly all CT cells showed oscillatory activity in the frequency range of 20–90 Hz, especially in response to visual stimuli. However, this activity was capricious; strong oscillations in one trial could disappear in the next despite identical stimulus conditions. Although the CT cells in both of these regions share many characteristics, the direction anisotropy and the suppression of activity during eye movements which characterize the neurons in PMLS suggests that these two areas have different roles in facilitating perceptual/motor processes at the level of the superior colliculus.

Schizophrenia patients and their relatives have saccadic abnormalities characterized by problems inhibiting a response. The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and its associated circuitry ostensibly mediate inhibition and support correct delayed response performance. In this context, two components of delayed response task performance are of interest: memory saccade metrics and error saccades made during the delay. To evaluate these variables, an ocular motor delayed response task was presented to 23 schizophrenia patients, 25 of their first-degree biological relatives, and 19 normal subjects. The measure that best differentiated groups was an increased frequency of error saccades generated during the delay by schizophrenia subjects and relatives. Decreased memory saccade gain also characterized patients and relatives. The similar pattern of results demonstrated by the patients with schizophrenia and their relatives suggests that performance on ocular motor delayed response tasks, either alone or in combination with other saccadic variables, may provide useful information about neural substrates associated with a liability for developing schizophrenia.

Research studies have found that smooth pursuit eye movement dysfunction may serve as an index of genetic liability to develop schizophrenia. The heritability of various measures of smooth pursuit eye tracking proficiency and the saccades that occur during smooth pursuit was examined in 64 monozygotic (MZ) and 48 dizygotic (DZ) twin pairs. Two age cohorts were assessed (11–12 and 17–18 years of age). Intraclass correlations indicated significant similarity in the MZ twins for almost all measures in both age cohorts, whereas few of the DZ twin correlations attained significance. Biometrical modeling indicated that genetic mechanisms influence performance on both global and specific eye tracking measures, accounting for about 40% to 60% of the variance. These findings suggest that the underlying brain systems responsible for smooth pursuit and saccade generation during pursuit are under partial genetic control.
