Field evaluations were made on the effects of imazaquin {2-[4,5-dihydro-4-methyl-4-(1-methylethyl)-5-oxo-1H-imidazol-2-yl]-3-quinolinecarboxylic acid} on Florida beggarweed [Desmodium tortuosum (SW) DC. # DEDTO] and sicklepod (Cassia obtusifolia L. # CASOB) control in peanuts (Arachis hypogaea L.). Crop yield was reduced at 392 and 504 g ae/ha and with preemergence applications. Florida beggarweed control was not achieved with this herbicide. Maximum sicklepod control (approximately 80%) was achieved with 392 and 504 g/ha applied postemergence. In a separate study, several herbicide systems utilizing imazaquin were compared to a standard weed control program. All these systems provided weed control and yields that were comparable to the standard weed control system; thus the inclusion of imazaquin offered no advantage over the standard system.

Analysis of fluometuron [1,1-dimethyl-3-(α,α,α-trifluoro-m-tolyl)urea] in soil solution after application of 0.5 or 1.0 ppmw revealed up to five-fold differences among three Alabama soils (Lucedale fine sandy loam, Decatur silty clay loam, and Sacul loam). Differences in fluometuron in soil solution were attributed to variable organic matter present and clay fractions. Fluometuron concentration in soil solution for each soil correlated well with control of four broadleaf weed species in a field experiment.

Results from identical experiments conducted at Headland, AL, and Plains, GA, from 1980 through 1982 show insecticide treatment had little effect on soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr. ‘Coker 237′] growth and morphology. Maximum insecticide applications increased soybean seed weight in two of five trials. Soybeans maintained free of sicklepod (Cassia obtusifolia L. ♯3 CASOB) for 4 weeks after emergence produced yields equal to those receiving season-long control in all trials, and 2-week control was equal to season-long maintenance in three trials. Length of weed interference-free maintenance did not affect soybean height. The number of pods per plant and seed weight were decreased when there was no control. Sicklepod shoot fresh weight and numbers decreased as the weed-free period increased from 0 weeks through the season. Row spacing had no effect on soybean height or seed size; however, the number of pods per plant was higher in 80- than in 40-cm rows. Row spacing influenced yield in only one trial where 20-cm rows outyielded 40-cm rows. A significant interaction occurred between the weed-free period and row spacing in two trials. Soybeans in 20-cm rows outyielded those in 40- and 80-cm rows when sicklepod was not controlled (i.e., 0 weeks interference-free maintenance).

Field experiments were conducted in 1994 and 1995 to determine if the sodium salt of pyrithiobac or bromoxynil applied in a low-volume, air-assist spray system controlled entireleaf morningglory, pitted morningglory, and smallflower morningglory as well as treatments applied with a conventional hydraulic fan spraying system, and to determine if herbicide rates could be reduced when using the low-volume spraying system. Pyrithiobac at 0.035 and 0.071 kg ai/ha and bromoxynil at 0.56 and 1.12 kg ai/ha were applied alone and in combination with DSMA at 1.7 kg ai/ha or MSMA at 1.7 kg ai/ha. Spraying systems were calibrated to deliver 26 L/ha and 140 L/ha for the low-volume and conventional systems, respectively. No significant differences in control were noted between low-volume and conventional spray systems when herbicides were applied at the suggested use rates of 0.071 and 1.12 kg ai/ha for pyrithiobac and bromoxynil, respectively. Morningglory control was reduced when pyrithiobac and bromoxynil were applied at one-half the suggested use rate regardless of the spraying systems. Bromoxynil alone generally controlled pitted and entireleaf morningglory better than pyrithiobac alone regardless of rate and application method. However, pyrithiobac generally provided better control of smallflower morningglory than bromoxynil. Adding MSMA or DSMA to bromoxynil and pyrithiobac increased control of both weed species.

Absorption of foliar-applied 14C-imazaquin {2-[4,5-dihydro-4-methyl-4-(1-methylethyl)-5-oxo-1H-imidazol-2-yl]-3-quinolinecarboxylic acid} 72 h after treatment was higher than 90% for soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr. ‘Braxton’], peanut (Arachis hypogaea L. ‘Florunner’), common cocklebur (Xanthium strumarium L. # XANST), sicklepod (Cassia obtusifolia L. # CASOB), and Florida beggarweed [Desmodium tortuosum (SW.) # DEDTO]. Both symplasmic and apoplasmic translocation of the herbicide were evident. Imazaquin half-life was 4.4 days in soybean, 5.3 days in peanut, 9.6 days in Florida beggarweed, 12.7 days in sicklepod, and 39.8 days in cocklebur. Tolerance of these species to foliar-applied imazaquin as determined in greenhouse studies with 21-day-old seedlings was as follows: soybean = peanut > Florida beggarweed > sicklepod > cocklebur. Tolerance was directly correlated to imazaquin halflife within the tissue of the respective species.

Soybean field experiments were conducted to compare weed interference data obtained from small 2.7-m2 plots to that obtained from large 11-m2 plots. Soybean row spacings of 15, 30, 45, and 90 cm were used. Sicklepod, common cocklebur, and soybean biomass as dry matter were harvested from small plots 10 weeks after planting and were compared to weed biomass and soybean seed yield from the large plots. Sicklepod and common cocklebur biomass in small plots increased and soybean biomass decreased as soybean row spacing increased. Soybean biomass was not affected by row spacing when weeds were not present. Sicklepod and common cocklebur biomass in large plots increased and soybean seed yield decreased as soybean row spacing increased. Soybean seed yield was not affected by row spacing when weeds were not present. Comparison of regression coefficients for paired regression lines indicates that soybean biomass from small plots may be substituted for seed yield from large plots as a measure of sicklepod or common cocklebur interference if both size plots use the same soybean row spacing and are irrigated until harvest.

Chlorimuron applied postemergence at 2.2, 4.4, 8.8, 18, and 35 g ai/ha to cotton at either the 4-leaf, pinhead-square, first-bloom, or full-bloom growth stage was evaluated for potential as a plant growth regulator. Chlorimuron did not reduce bolls per plant at any rate or time of application, but the proportion of open to closed bolls decreased as rate increased. Seed cotton yields decreased with increasing chlorimuron rate and cotton age. The use of chlorimuron as a plant growth regulator for cotton appears limited.

Three adjuvants, ARD 54, ARD 93, and ARD 1836, were evaluated for their ability to reduce metribuzin [4-amino-6-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-3-(methylthio)-1,2,4-triazin-5(4H)-one] phytotoxicity to soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] in sandy soils. A reduction in metribuzin phytotoxicity was observed, usually without reductions in sicklepod (Cassia obtusifolia L. # CASOB) control. The addition of linseed oil to a spray suspension containing 1% ARD 1836 reduced sicklepod control slightly at one of two locations. The addition of these adjuvants and linseed oil to the spray solution had no effect on soybean yield. These adjuvants slightly reduced movement of metribuzin in thin-layer soil chromatography but had no influence on sorption in batch-equilibrium experiments.

Field experiments were conducted in Alabama from 1992 through 1994 to evaluate the potential of the methyl ester of bensulfuron applied at sublethal rates as a plant growth regulator for reducing plant height and boll rot in cotton. Bensulfuron at 0.017 and 0.034 g ai/ha or mepiquat chloride at 10 g ai/ha was applied POST alone at the pinhead square or early-bloom stage of cotton growth or sequentially at 0.017 followed by (fb) 0.017 g/ha, 0.034 fb 0.034 g/ha of bensulfuron and 5 fb 5, 10 fb 10, 10 fb 20, or 20 fb 20 g/ha of mepiquat chloride. Mepiquat chloride had no effect on yield in 1992 and 1994 but decreased yield when applied sequentially in 1993. Bensulfuron was generally detrimental to first position fruit retention, and it delayed maturity. Treatments that reduced plant height did not reduce boll rot. Bensulfuron treatments that reduced plant height also reduced yield; therefore, the potential for its use as a growth regulator in cotton appears limited.

The effect of irrigation and weed control by various mechanical and chemical means was evaluated over a 4-yr period on newly planted pecans [Carya illinoensis (Wang.) K. Koch]. Weed control effect on tree growth became evident in the second growing season, and became more pronounced after the third and fourth season. After the fourth season, the maximum increase in tree diameter (384%) was achieved with comprehensive, herbicide-based weed control. Mowing provided a 224% increase, which was equivalent to the untreated (229%). Disking and selective chemical control of grass weeds resulted in 339 and 292% increase, respectively. Cumulative increase in tree diameter was 316 and 271% with and without irrigation, respectively.

A four-state study was initiated in 1988 to evaluate the influence of cultivation frequency and initiation on the cotton plant. When cultivations were initiated at 1 or 2 wk after emergence and cultivated weekly at a frequency of zero, one, two, four, or six times, seed cotton yields were not affected on a consistent basis. When averaged over cultivation frequency, seed cotton yields were increased for three of nine year-locations when cultivations were initiated at 2 wk after emergence when compared with 1 wk after emergence. At two locations, when seed cotton yields were averaged over initiation timing, it was shown that only two cultivations were necessary to achieve optimum seed cotton yields.

Traditional weed control systems based on soil-applied herbicides and cultivations were compared with systems utilizing postemergence grass herbicides for Texas panicum (Panicum texanum Buckle. # PANTE) control in peanut (Arachis hypogaea L. ‘Florunner′) production. Maximum net returns ($150/ha) and peanut yield were achieved with traditional systems utilizing benefin [N-butyl-N-ethyl-2,6-dinitro-4-(trifluoromethyl)benzenamine] applied preplant incorporated plus alachlor [2-chloro-N-(2,6-diethylphenyl)-N-(methoxymethyl)acetamide] and dinoseb [2-(1-methylpropyl)-4,6-dinitrophenol] applied at ground cracking and two cultivations. The postemergence system using alachlor plus dinoseb applied at ground cracking and sethoxydim {2-[1-(ethoxyimino)butyl]-5-[2-(ethylthio) propyl]-3-hydroxy-2-cyclohexen-1-one} applied postemergence also provided maximum net returns ($146/ha) and peanut yield.

Paraquat (1,1′-dimethyl-4,4′-bipyridinium ion) was applied to peanuts (Arachis hypogaea L. ‘Florunner’) for Texas panicum (Panicum texanum Buckl. # PANTE) control at 0.07, 0.14, and 0.28 kg ai/ha under five application schedules; a single application at 0, 1, 3, or 5 weeks after ground cracking, or multiple applications at 1 + 5 weeks or 1 + 3 + 5 weeks after ground cracking. Peanuts were planted at two different times (normal and late). A herbicide application at the third week (normal planting), or the third or fifth week after ground cracking (late planting) provided acceptable Texas panicum control. Control generally increased with rate. However, increasing paraquat rates with single applications on late-planted peanuts or multiple applications to normal- and late-planted peanuts tended to reduce yield and grade. A single application of 0.07 or 0.14 kg/ha applied the third week after ground cracking consistently provided the best balance between Texas panicum control and crop safety.

Tolerance of species to foliar applications of the ethyl ester of chlorimuron as determined in greenhouse studies with 21-day-old seedlings was: soybean = peanut > prickly sida > sicklepod > Florida beggarweed > common cocklebur. Absorption of foliar-applied 14C-chlorimuron 72 h after application was similar in soybean, peanut, sicklepod, common cocklebur, and prickly sida, but much less in Florida beggarweed. Slight symplasmic and apoplasmic translocation of the herbicide was evident in all species. Metabolism of chlorimuron 72 h after application was greatest in soybean and least in common cocklebur. Species tolerance to chlorimuron was directly correlated (r2 = 0.93) to the amount of unmetabolized chlorimuron (dpm/g dry wt) in the plant. Peanut exhibited increased tolerance to chlorimuron with age; this result was attributed to reduced absorption and translocation and more extensive metabolism of the absorbed herbicide by older plants.

Greenhouse and field studies were conducted to determine the interaction of clethodim sprayed in low volume with pyrithiobac or bromoxynil and to determine the influence of these mixtures on large crabgrass control. A low-volume, air-assisted spraying system was calibrated to deliver 26 L/ha and was compared to a conventional hydraulic fan spraying system calibrated to deliver 140 L/ha. Greenhouse data indicated that carrier volume had no effect on large crabgrass control with clethodim. The addition of pyrithiobac to clethodim in mixture was antagonistic compared to control with clethodim applied alone. The addition of bromoxynil to clethodim in mixture was synergistic. Field studies showed similar results.

Pecan trees subjected to different weed control and irrigation regimes from planting in 1986 through 1993 produced similar yields when irrigated (400 kg/ha, 3-yr avg) and not irrigated (320 kg/ha, 3-yr avg). Trees receiving total chemical weed control produced over five times more pecans (735 kg/ha, 3-yr avg) than weedy trees (131 kg/ha, 3-yr avg). Trees receiving disking produced more pecans when irrigated (677 kg/ha, 3-yr avg) than when not irrigated (339 kg/ha, 3-yr avg). Growth rate, expressed as increase in tree stem diameter, decreased for trees in all treatments once trees began bearing.

Field trials were conducted from 1991 to 1993 in the northern cotton-producing area of Alabama to evaluate the interaction of various production inputs for pest management and cotton development, maturity, and yield. Two levels of tillage (conventional and no-till), herbicide (1.12 and 2.24 kg ai ha−1 fluometuron, preemergence, with post-directed herbicides), insecticide (0.5 and 0.85 kg ai ha−1 aldicarb, in-furrow), and fungicide (0.9 kg ai ha−1 quintozene plus ethridazole, in-furrow or 0.14 kg ai ha−1 metalaxyl, hopper-box) programs were evaluated. The inputs investigated did not interact significantly to change the overall production strategy. Prickly sida required a higher level of herbicide input than did the entireleaf/ivyleaf morningglory complex. Both species were sufficiently controlled using reduced levels of fluometuron without sacrificing yield; however, cultivation was necessary in conventional tillage treatments to maintain control. A postemergence-directed herbicide treatment was also necessary for weed control, regardless of tillage. Decreasing the levels of each input simultaneously did not interact to affect cotton stand, height, early-season thrips counts, cotton maturity, or yield. Cotton was shorter in no-till than conventional plots.

Field experiments were conducted at one location in Georgia (1994) and at two locations in Alabama (1994 and 1995) to evaluate the effects of MSMA or DSMA plus pyrithiobac applied postemergence (POST) in cotton. Pyrithiobac at 0.07 kg ai/ha was applied POST alone or in combination with MSMA at 1.1 kg ai/ha or DSMA at 1.7 kg ai/ha at the pinhead square stage of cotton growth. Cotton was tolerant to the POST applications of pyrithiobac. Adding MSMA or DSMA to pyrithiobac injured cotton similar to MSMA or DSMA applied alone. Plant mapping data indicated that all treatments had no effect on height : node ratio, reproductive or vegetative node production, or square retention at the first or second fruiting position. Cotton maturity response to MSMA and DSMA ranged from no effect to delayed maturity. Adding DSMA to pyrithiobac increased Florida beggarweed and common cocklebur control over pyrithiobac applied alone in 1995 but did not increase control in 1994. Adding DSMA to pyrithiobac increased sicklepod control over pyrithiobac applied alone in the three site years it was rated in the Alabama tests. Where sicklepod is present, the addition of an arsenical herbicide to pyrithiobac will generally increase control but has the potential to delay maturity and decrease cotton yield equal to the arsenical herbicide applied alone.

Imidazolinone herbicides injure currently available commercial field corn cultivars; however, cultivars resistant to these herbicides have been developed. Sicklepod, Texas panicum, and annual morningglory control using AC 263,222 (36 and 72 g ai/ha), imazethapyr (36 and 72 g ai/ha), or nicosulfuron (35 g ai/ha) applied POST at 2,4, and 6 wk after planting were evaluated in imidazolinone-tolerant corn. Studies were conducted at Attapulgus and Plains, Georgia from 1992 through 1993. Nicosulfuron and AC 263,222 at 72 g/ha controlled Texas panicum at least 87% when applied 2 wk after planting. Imazethapyr did not consistently control Texas panicum or sicklepod, regardless of application rate. AC 263,222 at both rates and nicosulfuron controlled sicklepod at least 86% when applied 2 wk after planting; however, later application or application under dry conditions generally resulted in reduced control. All herbicides controlled the entireleaf and pitted morningglory complex at least 84% when applied 2 wk after planting. Imidazolinone-tolerant corn was tolerant to all herbicides, regardless of rate and timing, and generally yielded greater when weeds were controlled early in the season.
