We address the question of the dualizability of nilpotent Mal’cev algebras, showing that nilpotent finite Mal’cev algebras with a nonabelian supernilpotent congruence are inherently nondualizable. In particular, finite nilpotent nonabelian Mal’cev algebras of finite type are nondualizable if they are direct products of algebras of prime power order. We show that these results cannot be generalized to nilpotent algebras by giving an example of a group expansion of infinite type that is nilpotent and nonabelian, but dualizable. To our knowledge this is the first construction of a nonabelian nilpotent dualizable algebra. It has the curious property that all its nonabelian finitary reducts with group operation are nondualizable. We were able to prove dualizability by utilizing a new clone theoretic approach developed by Davey, Pitkethly, and Willard. Our results suggest that supernilpotence plays an important role in characterizing dualizability among Mal’cev algebras.

Suppose that ${\Gamma }^{+ } $ is the positive cone of a totally ordered abelian group $\Gamma $, and $(A, {\Gamma }^{+ } , \alpha )$ is a system consisting of a ${C}^{\ast } $-algebra $A$, an action $\alpha $ of ${\Gamma }^{+ } $ by extendible endomorphisms of $A$. We prove that the partial-isometric crossed product $A\hspace{0.167em} { \mathop{\times }\nolimits}_{\alpha }^{\mathrm{piso} } \hspace{0.167em} {\Gamma }^{+ } $ is a full corner in the subalgebra of $\L ({\ell }^{2} ({\Gamma }^{+ } , A))$, and that if $\alpha $ is an action by automorphisms of $A$, then it is the isometric crossed product $({B}_{{\Gamma }^{+ } } \otimes A)\hspace{0.167em} {\mathop{\times }\nolimits }^{\mathrm{iso} } \hspace{0.167em} {\Gamma }^{+ } $, which is therefore a full corner in the usual crossed product of system by a group of automorphisms. We use these realizations to identify the ideal of $A\hspace{0.167em} { \mathop{\times }\nolimits}_{\alpha }^{\mathrm{piso} } \hspace{0.167em} {\Gamma }^{+ } $ such that the quotient is the isometric crossed product $A\hspace{0.167em} { \mathop{\times }\nolimits}_{\alpha }^{\mathrm{iso} } \hspace{0.167em} {\Gamma }^{+ } $.

We define a Cayley sum digraph of ideals of $R$, denoted by $\overrightarrow{\mathrm{Cay}}^+ (I(R),S)$, as a directed graph whose vertex set is the set $I(R)$ and, for every two distinct vertices $I$ and $J$, there is an arc from $I$ to $J$, denoted by $I\longrightarrow J$, whenever $I+K=J$, for some ideal $K $ in $S$. Also, the Cayley sum graph $ \mathrm{Cay}^+ (I(R), S)$ is an undirected graph whose vertex set is the set $I(R)$ and two distinct vertices $I$ and $J$ are adjacent whenever $I+K=J$ or $J+K=I$, for some ideal $K $ in $ S$. In this paper, we study some basic properties of the graphs $\overrightarrow{\mathrm{Cay}}^+ (I(R),S)$ and $ \mathrm{Cay}^+ (I(R), S)$ such as connectivity, girth and clique number. Moreover, we investigate the planarity, outerplanarity and ring graph of $ \mathrm{Cay}^+ (I(R), S)$ and also we provide some characterization for rings $R$ whose Cayley sum graphs have genus one.

An extension of Rademacher’s theorem is proved for Lipschitz mappings between Banach spaces without the Radon–Nikodým property.

In this paper, we give an explicit formula for the number of times a value in $\{0,1,\ldots,b-1\}$ occurs in the periodic part of the base-$b$ expansion of $1/p^m$. As a consequence of this result, we prove two recent conjectures of Aragón Artacho et al. [‘Walking on real numbers’, Math. Intelligencer35(1) (2013), 42–60] concerning the base-$b$ expansion of Stoneham numbers.

Let $M$ be a complete hyperbolic 3-manifold homotopy equivalent to a compact surface $\Sigma $. Let $\Phi $ be a proper subsurface of $\Sigma $, whose boundary is sufficiently short in $M$. We show that the union of all Margulis tubes and cusps homotopic into $\Phi $ lifts to a uniformly quasiconvex subset of hyperbolic 3-space.

We prove that for a large class of Banach function spaces continuity and holomorphy of superposition operators are equivalent and that bounded superposition operators are continuous. We also use techniques from infinite dimensional holomorphy to establish the boundedness of certain superposition operators. Finally, we apply our results to the study of superposition operators on weighted spaces of holomorphic functions and the $F(p, \alpha , \beta )$ spaces of Zhao. Some independent properties on these spaces are also obtained.

Let ${ \mathbb{K} }^{m\times n} $ denote the set of all $m\times n$ matrices over a skew field $ \mathbb{K} $. In this paper, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of the group inverse of $P+ Q$ and its representation under the condition $PQ= 0$, where $P, Q\in { \mathbb{K} }^{n\times n} $. In addition, in view of the natural characters of block matrices, we give the existence and representation for the group inverse of $P+ Q$ and $P+ Q+ R$ under some conditions, where $P, Q, R\in { \mathbb{K} }^{n\times n} $.

This generalizes a classical result from the theory of set addition.

We study the reflexivity and transitivity of a double triangle lattice of subspaces in a Hilbert space. We show that the double triangle lattice is neither reflexive nor transitive when some invertibility condition is satisfied (by the restriction of a projection under another). In this case, we show that the reflexive lattice determined by the double triangle lattice contains infinitely many projections, which partially answers a problem of Halmos on small lattices of subspaces in Hilbert spaces.

In this paper, we investigate the properties of locally univalent and multivalent planar harmonic mappings. First, we discuss coefficient estimates and Landau’s theorem for some classes of locally univalent harmonic mappings, and then we study some Lipschitz-type spaces for locally univalent and multivalent harmonic mappings.

An additive map $\delta {:}\ R\to Q_{mr}(R)$ is called a (left) $b$-generalized derivation with associated map $d$ if $\delta (xy)=\delta (x)y+bxd(y)$ for all $x, y\in R$. This gives a unified viewpoint of derivations, generalized derivations and generalized $\sigma $-derivations with an X-inner automorphism $\sigma $. We give a complete characterization of $b$-generalized derivations of $R$ having nilpotent values of bounded index. This extends several known results in the literature.

In this paper we investigate some subclasses of strongly regular congruences on an $E$-inversive semigroup $S$. We describe the minimum and the maximum strongly orthodox congruences on $S$ whose characteristic trace coincides with the characteristic trace of given congruences and, in each case, we present an alternative characterization for them. A description of all strongly orthodox congruences on $S$ with characteristic trace $\tau $ is given. Further, we investigate the kernel relation of strongly orthodox congruences on an $E$-inversive semigroup and give the least and the greatest element in the class of the same kernel with a given congruence.

Groebner bases for the ideals determining mod $\def \xmlpi #1{}\def \mathsfbi #1{\boldsymbol {\mathsf {#1}}}\let \le =\leqslant \let \leq =\leqslant \let \ge =\geqslant \let \geq =\geqslant \def \Pr {\mathit {Pr}}\def \Fr {\mathit {Fr}}\def \Rey {\mathit {Re}}2$ cohomology of the real flag manifolds $F(1,1,n)$ and $F(1,2,n)$ are obtained. These are used to compute appropriate Stiefel–Whitney classes in order to establish some new nonembedding and nonimmersion results for the manifolds $F(1,2,n)$.

Let ${C}_{d} ({\tau }_{1} , \ldots , {\tau }_{n} )\subset { \mathbb{R} }^{d} $ denote the cyclic polytope of dimension $d$ with $n$ vertices $({\tau }_{1} , { \tau }_{1}^{2} , \ldots , { \tau }_{1}^{d} ), \ldots , ({\tau }_{n} , { \tau }_{n}^{2} , \ldots , { \tau }_{n}^{d} )$. We are interested in finding the smallest integer ${\gamma }_{d} $ such that if ${\tau }_{i+ 1} - {\tau }_{i} \geq {\gamma }_{d} $ for $1\leq i\lt n$, then ${C}_{d} ({\tau }_{1} , \ldots , {\tau }_{n} )$ is normal. One of the known results is ${\gamma }_{d} \leq d(d+ 1)$. In the present paper a new inequality ${\gamma }_{d} \leq {d}^{2} - 1$ is proved. Moreover, it is shown that if $d\geq 4$ with ${\tau }_{3} - {\tau }_{2} = 1$, then ${C}_{d} ({\tau }_{1} , \ldots , {\tau }_{n} )$ is not very ample.

We study lens space surgeries along two different families of 2-component links, denoted by ${A}_{m, n} $ and ${B}_{p, q} $, related with the rational homology $4$-ball used in J. Park’s (generalized) rational blow down. We determine which coefficient $r$ of the knotted component of the link yields a lens space by Dehn surgery. The link ${A}_{m, n} $ yields a lens space only by the known surgery with $r= mn$ and unexpectedly with $r= 7$ for $(m, n)= (2, 3)$. On the other hand, ${B}_{p, q} $ yields a lens space by infinitely many $r$. Our main tool for the proof are the Reidemeister-Turaev torsions, that is, Reidemeister torsions with combinatorial Euler structures. Our results can be extended to the links whose Alexander polynomials are same as those of ${A}_{m, n} $ and ${B}_{p, q} $.

We study the Mahler measure of the trinomials ${z}^{n} \pm {z}^{k} \pm 1$. We give two criteria to identify those whose Mahler measure is less than $1. 381\hspace{0.167em} 356\cdots = M(1+ {z}_{1} + {z}_{2} )$. We prove that these criteria are true for $n$ sufficiently large.

We prove that ${ \mathbb{Z} }_{{p}^{n} } $ and ${ \mathbb{Z} }_{p} [t] / ({t}^{n} )$ are polynomially equivalent if and only if $n\leq 2$ or ${p}^{n} = 8$. For the proof, employing Bernoulli numbers, we explicitly provide the polynomials which compute the carry-on part for the addition and multiplication in base $p$. As a corollary, we characterize finite rings of ${p}^{2} $ elements up to polynomial equivalence.

In this paper we prove the existence of complete minimal surfaces in some metric semidirect products. These surfaces are similar to the doubly and singly periodic Scherk minimal surfaces in ${ \mathbb{R} }^{3} $. In particular, we obtain these surfaces in the Heisenberg space with its canonical metric, and in ${\mathrm{Sol} }_{3} $ with a one-parameter family of nonisometric metrics.
