A new Markov process is introduced, describing growth or spread in two dimensions, via the aggregation of particles or the filling of cells. States of the process are configurations of part of the boundary of the growing aggregate, and transitions are captures or escapes of single particles. For suitably chosen transition rates, the process is dynamically reversible, leading to an explicit stationary distribution and a statistical description of the boundary. The growth rate is calculated and growth behaviour described. Different asymptotic relations between transition rates lead to different growth patterns or regimes. Besides the regimes familiar in polymer crystal growth, several new ones are described. The aggregate can have a porous structure resembling thin solid films deposited from vapour. Two measures of porosity, one for the boundary and one for the bulk, are calculated. The process is relevant to growing colonies of bacteria or the like, to the spread of epidemics and grass or forest fires, and to voter models.

Given a two-dimensional Poisson process, X, with intensity λ, we are interested in the largest number of points, L, contained in a translate of a fixed scanning set, C, restricted to lie inside a rectangular area.

The distribution of L is accurately approximated for rectangular scanning sets, using a technique that can be extended to higher dimensions. Reasonable approximations for non-rectangular scanning sets are also obtained using a simple correction of the rectangular result.

The ‘scanning process' Z(t), t ∈ ℝk of the title is a Gaussian random field obtained by associating with Z(t) the value of a set-indexed Brownian motion on the translate t + A0 of some ‘scanning set' A0. We study the basic properties of the random field Z relating, for example, its continuity and other sample path properties to the geometrical properties of A0. We ask if the set A0 determines the scanning process, and investigate when, and how, it is possible to recover the structure of A0 from realisations of the sample paths of the random field Z.

On independent random points U1,· ··,Un distributed uniformly on [0, 1]d, a random graph Gn(x) is constructed in which two distinct such points are joined by an edge if the l∞-distance between them is at most some prescribed value 0 ≦ x ≦ 1. Almost-sure asymptotic rates of convergence/divergence are obtained for the maximum vertex degree of the random graph and related quantities, including the clique number, chromatic number and independence number, as the number n of points becomes large and the edge distance x is allowed to vary with n. Series and sequence criteria on edge distances {xn} are provided which guarantee the random graph to be empty of edges, a.s.

Consider a continuum percolation model in which, at each point of a d-dimensional Poisson process of rate λ, a ball of radius 1 is centred. We show that, for any d ≧ 3, there exists a phase where both the regions, occupied and vacant, contain unbounded components. The proof uses the concept of enhancement for the Boolean model, and along the way we prove that the critical intensity of a Boolean model defined on a slab is strictly larger than the critical intensity of a Boolean model defined on the whole space.

This article continues an investigation begun in [2]. A random graph Gn(x) is constructed on independent random points U1, · ··, Un distributed uniformly on [0, 1]d, d ≧ 1, in which two distinct such points are joined by an edge if the l∞-distance between them is at most some prescribed value 0 < x < 1.

Almost-sure asymptotic results are obtained for the convergence/divergence of the minimum vertex degree of the random graph, as the number n of points becomes large and the edge distance x is allowed to vary with n. The largest nearest neighbor link dn, the smallest x such that Gn(x) has no vertices of degree zero, is shown to satisfy Series and sequence criteria on edge distances {xn} are provided which guarantee the random graph to be complete, a.s. These criteria imply a.s. limiting behavior of the diameter of the vertex set.

The empty space function of a stationary point process in ℝd is the function that assigns to each r, r > 0, the probability that there is no point within distance r of O. In a recent paper Van Lieshout and Baddeley study the so-called J-function, which is defined as the ratio of the empty space function of a stationary point process and that of its corresponding reduced Palm process. They advocate the use of the J-function as a characterization of the type of spatial interaction.

Therefore it is natural to ask whether J ≡ 1 implies that the point process is Poisson. We restrict our analysis to the one-dimensional case and show that a classical construction by Szász provides an immediate counterexample. In this example the interpoint distances are still exponentially distributed. This raises the question whether it is possible to have J ≡ 1 but non-exponentially distributed interpoint distances. We construct a point process with J ≡ 1 but where the interpoint distances are bounded.

We study properties of the clusters of a system of fully penetrable balls, a model formed by centering equal-sized balls on the points of a Poisson process. We develop a formal expression for the density of connected clusters of k balls (called k-mers) in the system, first rigorously derived by Penrose [15]. Our integral expressions are free of inherent redundancies, making them more tractable for numerical evaluation. We also derive and evaluate an integral expression for the average volume of k-mers.

The shape of a rectangular prism in (d + 1)-dimensions is defined as Y = (Y1, Y2, · ··, Yd), Yn = Ln/Ln+1 where the Ln are the prism's edge lengths, in ascending order. We investigate shape distributions that are invariant when the prism is cut into two, also rectangular, prisms, with one prism retained for measurement and the other discarded. Interesting new distributions on [0, 1]d arise.

For a stationary point process X of sets in the convex ring in ℝd, a relation is given between the mean particles of the section process X ∩ E (where E varies through the set of k-dimensional subspaces in ℝd) and a mean particle of X. In particular, it is shown that the mean bodies of all planar sections of X determine the Blaschke body of X and hence the mean normal distribution of X.

In this paper we study some topics of interest to specialists in computer tomography. These are the following. (a) The Radon transform and its applications to computer tomography. (b) Problems of computer tomography with partially known data. Estimates of stability will be given for different types of distance in the space of probability distributions. We consider the problem with partially known tomographic data as a stability problem for appropriately chosen distances. This approach allows us to give a solution of the so-called computer tomography paradox. (c) The relation of quantum mechanics to computer tomography. An intriguing method for ‘measuring' wavefunctions by tomographic methods (CAT scans) opens a new approach to various problems in quantum mechanics. Using the method outlined for the solution of the computer tomography paradox, we derive inequalities that estimate the amount of information on the wavefunctions resulting from real CAT scans, i.e. CAT scans based on the finite number of measured marginals (projections) of the Wigner distributions. In conclusion, we propose a new version of the mathematical justification of CAT scans.

Assessing the reliability of computer software has been an active area of research in computer science for the past twenty years. To date, well over a hundred probability models for software reliability have been proposed. These models have been motivated by seemingly unrelated arguments and have been the subject of active debate and discussion. In the meantime, the search for an ideal model continues to be pursued. The purpose of this paper is to point out that practically all the proposed models for software reliability are special cases of self-exciting point processes. This perspective unifies the very diverse approaches to modeling reliability growth and provides a common structure under which problems of software reliability can be discussed.

The gating mechanism of a single ion channel is usually modelled by a continuous-time Markov chain with a finite state space, partitioned into two classes termed ‘open’ and ‘closed’. It is possible to observe only which class the process is in. A burst of channel openings is defined to be a succession of open sojourns separated by closed sojourns all having duration less than t0. Let N(t) be the number of bursts commencing in (0, t]. Then are measures of the degree of temporal clustering of bursts. We develop two methods for determining the above measures. The first method uses an embedded Markov renewal process and remains valid when the underlying channel process is semi-Markov and/or brief sojourns in either the open or closed classes of state are undetected. The second method uses a ‘backward’ differential-difference equation.

The observed channel process when brief sojourns are undetected can be modelled by an embedded Markov renewal process, whose kernel is shown, by exploiting connections with bursts when all sojourns are detected, to satisfy a differential-difference equation. This permits a unified derivation of both exact and approximate expressions for the kernel, and leads to a thorough asymptotic analysis of the kernel as the length of undetected sojourns tends to zero.

Given a random integer N ≧ 0 and a sequence of random variables Ai ≧ 0, we define a transformation T on the class of probability measures on [0, ∞) by letting Tμ be the distribution of , where {Zi} are independent random variables with distribution μ, which are independent of N and of {Ai} as well. We obtain the optimal conditions for the functional equation μ = Tμ to have a non-trivial solution of finite mean, and we study the existence of moments of the solutions. The work unifies the corresponding theorems of Kesten-Stigum concerning the Galton-Watson process, of Biggins for branching random walks, of Kahane-Peyrière for a model of turbulence of Yaglom made precise by Mandelbrot, and of Durrett-Liggett for the study of invariant measures for certain infinite particle systems.

We derive a variety of estimates for the survival probability of a branching process in a random environment. There are three cases of interest, the critical, weakly and strongly subcritical. The large deviation result, first obtained by Dekking for the class of finite state space i.i.d. environments, is shown to hold in more general environments. We also obtain some finer convergence results.

This paper discusses the distribution of tumor size at detection derived within the framework of a new stochastic model of carcinogenesis. This distribution assumes a simple limiting form, with age at detection tending to infinity which is found to be a generalization of the distribution that arises in the length-biased sampling. Two versions of the model are considered with reference to spontaneous and induced carcinogenesis; both of them show similar asymptotic behavior. When the limiting distribution is applied to real data analysis its adequacy can be tested through testing the conditional independence of the size, V, and the age, A, at detection given A > t*, where the value of t* is to be estimated from the given sample. This is illustrated with an application to data on premenopausal breast cancer. The proposed distribution offers the prospect of the estimation of some biologically meaningful parameters descriptive of the temporal organization of tumor latency. An estimate of the model stability to the prior distribution of tumor size and some other stability results for the Bayes formula are given.

Whole genome amplification is important for multipoint mapping by sperm or oocyte typing and genetic disease diagnosis. Polymerase chain reaction is not suitable for amplifying long DNA sequences. This paper studies a new technique, designated PEP-primer-extension-preamplification, for amplifying long DNA sequences using the theory of branching processes. A mathematical model for PEP is constructed and a closed formula for the expected target yield is obtained. A central limit theorem and a strong law of large numbers for the number of kth generation target sequences are proved.

The accuracy of the Normal or Poisson approximations can be significantly improved by adding part of an asymptotic expansion in the exponent. The signed-compound-Poisson measures obtained in this manner can be of the same structure as the Poisson distribution. For large deviations we prove that signed-compound-Poisson measures enlarge the zone of equivalence for tails.

Consider a system of interacting finite Markov chains in continuous time, where each subsystem is aggregated by a common partitioning of the state space. The interaction is assumed to arise from dependence of some of the transition rates for a given subsystem at a specified time on the states of the other subsystems at that time. With two subsystem classes, labelled 0 and 1, the superposition process arising from a system counts the number of subsystems in the latter class. Key structure and results from the theory of aggregated Markov processes are summarized. These are then applied also to superposition processes. In particular, we consider invariant distributions for the level m entry process, marginal and joint distributions for sojourn-times of the superposition process at its various levels, and moments and correlation functions associated with these distributions. The distributions are obtained mainly by using matrix methods, though an approach based on point process methods and conditional probability arguments is outlined. Conditions under which an interacting aggregated Markov chain is reversible are established. The ideas are illustrated with simple examples for which numerical results are obtained using Matlab. Motivation for this study has come from stochastic modelling of the behaviour of ion channels; another application is in reliability modelling.

The dynamical aspects of single channel gating can be modelled by a Markov renewal process, with states aggregated into two classes corresponding to the receptor channel being open or closed, and with brief sojourns in either class not detected. This paper is concerned with the relation between the amount of time, for a given record, in which the channel appears to be open compared to the amount in which it is actually open and the difference in their proportions; this may be used to obtain information on the unobserved actual process from the observed one. Results, with extensions, on exponential families have been applied to obtain relevant generating functions and asymptotic normal distributions, including explicit forms for the parameters. Numerical results are given as illustration in special cases.
