The Advanced Laser–Plasma High-Energy Accelerators towards X-rays (ALPHA-X) programme at the University of Strathclyde is developing laser–plasma accelerators for the production of ultra-short high quality electron bunches. Focussing such LWFA bunches into an undulator, for example, requires particular attention to be paid to the emittance, electron bunch duration and energy spread. On the ALPHA-X wakefield accelerator beam line, a high intensity ultra-short pulse from a 30 TW Ti:Sapphire laser is focussed into a helium gas jet to produce femtosecond duration electron bunches in the range of 90–220 MeV. Measurements of the electron energy spectrum, obtained using a high resolution magnetic dipole spectrometer, show electron bunch r.m.s. energy spreads down to 0.5%. A pepper-pot mask is used to obtain transverse emittance measurements of a 128 ± 3 MeV mono-energetic electron beam. An average normalized emittance of ϵrms,x,y = 2.2 ± 0.7, 2.3 ± 0.6 π-mm-mrad is measured, which is comparable to that of a conventional radio-frequency accelerator. The best measured emittance of ϵrms,x, = 1.1 ± 0.1 π-mm-mrad corresponds to the resolution limit of the detection system. 3D particle-in-cell simulations of the ALPHA-X accelerator partially replicate the generation of low emittance, low energy spread bunches with charge less than 4 pC and gas flow simulations indicate both long density ramps and shock formation in the gas jet nozzle.

Arbitrary amplitude dust-acoustic double-layers (DA-DLs) in two high-energy tail ion distributions are investigated. The electron number density has been assumed sufficiently depleted during the charging of dust grains on account of the attachment of background plasma electrons on the surface of dust grains. It is found that under certain conditions DA-DLs may be admitted. The degree of suprathermality of the low-temperature component has a sensitive role on their formation and a small change in this degree can even prevent the DL formation. The ‘Maxwellianization’ of the high-temperature component involves a suprathermalization process of the low-temperature component for the existence of localized DA-DLs. Our results may be relevant to a number of space dusty plasma systems, particularly the Saturn's F-ring where electron depletion and suprathermality are thought to come into play.

The Paschen curve for D.C. electric field-driven sources like conductively coupled plasmas is examined. The considered plasma gases are metals. The minimum breakdown requirement is related to the ionization energy and the collision cross section of the considered plasma. The dominant collisions to consider may depend on the plasma source.

The role of static inductance on ion beam emission in plasma focus devices, based on anomalous resistivity, is reported. The effect of gas pressure variation on the process of energy transfer into plasma is investigated and discussed by using Lee's model. The dependence of ion beam production on filling gas pressure along with change in static inductance is studied. The results show that increase of static inductance in a specific range of operating pressure can enhance the efficiency of dense plasma focus device.

Double Alfvén wave solutions of the magnetohydrodynamic equations in which the physical variables (the gas density ρ, fluid velocity u, gas pressure p, and magnetic field induction B) depend only on two independent wave phases ϕ1(x,t) and ϕ2(x,t) are obtained. The integrals for the double Alfvén wave are the same as for simple waves, namely, the gas pressure, magnetic pressure, and group velocity of the wave are constant. Compatibility conditions on the evolution of the magnetic field B due to changes in ϕ1 and ϕ2, as well as constraints due to Gauss's law ∇ · B = 0 are discussed. The magnetic field lines and hodographs of B in which the tip of the magnetic field B moves on the sphere |B| = B = const. are used to delineate the physical characteristics of the wave. Hamilton's equations for the simple Alfvén wave with wave normal n(ϕ), and with magnetic induction B(ϕ) in which ϕ is the wave phase, are obtained by using the Frenet–Serret equations for curves x=X(ϕ) in differential geometry. The use of differential geometry of 2D surfaces in a 3D Euclidean space to describe double Alfvén waves is briefly discussed.

Numerical investigations of the Polar Mesosphere Summer Echoes (PMSE) Overshoot Effect have to date been undertaken under the premise of plasma neutrality and current equilibrium at any time. We find it necessary to revisit the calculations without these restrictions, since electrons and ions are attached to and absorbed by mesospheric dust particles at vastly different rates under PMSE conditions. We find that differences to earlier modeling might be so significant as to warrant further investigation. Furthermore, we conduct comprehensive studies of the PMSE Overshoot Effect and put the results in the context of experimental realities.

New technique is suggested in plasma polarimetry: Differential equations for angular parameters of polarization ellipse, characterizing the amplitude ratio and the phase difference between orthogonal components of the wave field. Equations for angular variables ‘amplitude ratio–phase difference’ are derived, which allow direct calculation of the parameters of polarization ellipse, omitting solutions for the Stokes vector. The simplest analytical solutions are presented for the pure Faraday and the pure Cotton–Mouton effects. Behavior of angular parameters in the homogeneous and inhomogeneous plasmas is illustrated by numerical modeling in conditions when the Faraday and Cotton–Mouton effects are large enough and comparable in strength.

The double tearing mode (DTM) instability with two qs = 1 rational surfaces is investigated by taking into account the collisionless effects, including electron inertia and electron viscosity in a cylindrical geometry. The calculations show that for q-profile with a small distance between two rational surfaces, Δrs, there exists a broad linear spectrum of collisionless DTMs. The collisionless effects not only can significantly increase the linear growth rate of DTMs but can also enlarge the width of spectrum of unstable modes. For the q-profile with fixed Δrs and fixed magnetic shears at two rational surfaces, the high-order harmonics with smaller wavelength, such as the m/n = 2/2, 3/3 and 4/4 modes, can be easily excited to have larger growth rates than the m/n = 1/1 mode by ‘lifting’ the safety factor value between two rational surfaces. The characteristics of eigenmode structures of the most unstable and secondly unstable DTMs with various mode numbers are analyzed in detail and the corresponding collisionless scalings are numerically obtained and verified theoretically based on the previous relevant analytical theories. In addition, the synergetic effects of plasma resistivity, electron inertia and electron viscosity on the linear growth rates of DTMs are analyzed.

Optimization of laser wakefield acceleration involves understanding and control of the laser evolution in tenuous plasmas, the response of the plasma medium, and its effect on the accelerating particles. We explore these phenomena in the weakly nonlinear regime, in which the laser power is similar to the critical power for self-focusing. Using Particle-In-Cell simulations with the code QuickPIC, we demonstrate that a laser pulse can remain focused in a plasma channel for hundreds of Rayleigh lengths and efficiently accelerate a high-quality electron beam to 100GeV (25GeV) in a single stage with average gradient 3.6GV/m (7.2GV/m).

For vortex-like ion distribution dusty plasmas, the modified KP equation is obtained by using the traditional perturbation method. The growth rate of a solitary wave solution for a higher order disturbance propagating in an arbitrary direction is obtained. We find that the solitary wave is stable under higher order disturbance in this system. However, the growth rate is different with different propagating direction.

A one-dimensional fluid model is built to study the effect of radio frequency (RF) on the characteristics of RF nitrogen discharge with induced argon plasma at high pressure. The model is solved by a finite difference method, and the numerical results are obtained. The numerical results show that by modulating driven frequency, the discharge can obtain higher plasma density. Moreover, the discharge is operated in a stable α mode in a range of 100 MHz of driven frequency.

We report production of a self-injected, collimated (8 mrad divergence), 600 pC bunch of electrons with energies up to 350 MeV from a petawatt laser-driven plasma accelerator in a plasma of electron density ne = 1017 cm−3, an order of magnitude lower than previous self-injected laser-plasma accelerators. The energy of the focused drive laser pulse (150 J, 150 fs) was distributed over several hot spots. Simulations show that these hot spots remained independent over a 5 cm interaction length, and produced weakly nonlinear plasma wakes without bubble formation capable of accelerating pre-heated (~1 MeV) plasma electrons up to the observed energies. The required pre-heating is attributed tentatively to pre-pulse interactions with the plasma.

The finite ion Larmor radius (FLR) stabilization of the magnetic curvature-driven Rayleigh–Taylor (MCD RT) instability in a low beta plasma with nonzero ion temperature gradient is investigated. Finite electron temperature effects and ion temperature perturbations are incorporated. A new set of nonlinear equations for flute waves with arbitrary wavelengths as compared with the ion Larmor radius in a plasma with curved magnetic field lines is derived. Particular attention is paid to the waves with spatial scales of the order of the ion Larmor radius. In the linear limit, a Fourier transform of these equations yields an improved dispersion relation for flute waves. The dependence of the MCD RT instability growth rate on the equilibrium plasma parameters and the wavelengths is studied. The condition for which the instability cannot be stabilized by the FLR effects is found.

The dust-ion-acoustic solitary waves (DIA SWs) in an unmagnetized dusty plasma containing non-thermal electrons, cold mobile positive ions, and stationary arbitrarily (positively and negatively) charged static dust have been theoretically studied. The reductive perturbation technique has been employed to derive the Korteweg-de Vries equation, which admits SW solutions under certain conditions. It has been also shown that the basic features (amplitude, width, speed, etc.) of DIA SWs are significantly modified by the polarity of dust and non-thermal electrons. The implications of our results in space and laboratory dusty plasma situations are briefly discussed.

The laser wakefield structure in a magnetized underdense plasma is studied analytically and numerically. Because of the DC magnetic field perpendicular to the laser propagation direction, an electromagnetic component appears in addition to the normal electrostatic component. This electromagnetic component can transmit partially into vacuum at the plasma–vacuum boundary as shown by particle-in-cell simulation. It is found that the emission has components both at the fundamental plasma frequency and its harmonics if the wakefield is driven at a high amplitude. Comparing with the emission at the plasma frequency, the harmonic emission depends weakly upon the density profile at plasma–vacuum boundary and it can pass through the boundary almost without energy loss, providing a new method for the diagnostic of wakefields.
