The behaviour of a strongly magnetised collisional electron–positron plasma that is optically thin to cyclotron radiation is considered, and the distribution functions accessible to it on the various timescales in the system are calculated. Particular attention is paid to the limit in which the collision time exceeds the radiation emission time, making the electron distribution function strongly anisotropic. Indeed, these are the exact conditions likely to be attained in the first laboratory electron–positron plasma experiments currently being developed, which will typically have very low densities and be confined in very strong magnetic fields. The constraint of strong magnetisation adds an additional complication in that long-range Coulomb collisions, which are usually negligible, must now be considered. A rigorous collision operator for these long-range collisions has never been written down. Nevertheless, we show that the collisional scattering can be accounted for without knowing the explicit form of this collision operator. The rate of radiation emission is calculated and it is found that the loss of energy from the plasma is proportional to the parallel collision frequency multiplied by a factor that only depends logarithmically on plasma parameters. That is, this is a self-accelerating process, meaning that the bulk of the energy will be lost in a few collision times. We show that in a simple case, that of straight field-line geometry, there are no unstable drift waves in such plasmas, despite being far from Maxwellian.

The exact energy and angular momentum conservation laws are derived by the Noether method for the Hamiltonian and symplectic representations of the gauge-free electromagnetic gyrokinetic Vlasov–Maxwell equations. These gyrokinetic equations, which are solely expressed in terms of electromagnetic fields, describe the low-frequency turbulent fluctuations that perturb a time-independent toroidally-axisymmetric magnetized plasma. The explicit proofs presented here provide a complete picture of the transfer of energy and angular momentum between the gyrocentres and the perturbed electromagnetic fields, in which the crucial roles played by gyrocentre polarization and magnetization effects are highlighted. In addition to yielding an exact angular momentum conservation law, the gyrokinetic Noether equation yields an exact momentum transport equation, which might be useful in more general equilibrium magnetic geometries.

While several results have pointed to the existence of exactly quasisymmetric fields on a surface (Garren & Boozer, Phys. Fluids B, vol. 3, 1991, pp. 2805–2821; 2822–2834; Plunk & Helander, J. Plasma Phys., vol. 84, 2018, 905840205), we have obtained the first such solutions using a vacuum surface expansion formalism. We obtain a single nonlinear parabolic partial differential equation for a function $\eta$ such the field strength satisfies $B = B(\eta )$. Closed-form solutions are obtained in cylindrical, slab and isodynamic geometries. Numerical solutions of the full nonlinear equations in general axisymmetric toroidal geometry are obtained, resulting in a class of quasihelical local vacuum equilibria near an axisymmetric surface. The analytic models provide additional insight into general features of the nonlinear solutions, such as localization of the surface perturbations on the inboard side. The local solutions thus obtained can be continued globally only for special initial surfaces.

The propagation of radio-frequency (RF) waves in tokamaks can be affected by filamentary structures, or blobs, that are present in the edge plasma and the scrape-off layer. The difference in the permittivity between the surrounding plasma and interior of a filament leads to reflection, refraction and diffraction of the waves. This, in turn, can affect the power flow into the core of the plasma and reduce the efficiency of heating and/or current generation. The scattering of RF waves, lower hybrid, helicon and ion cyclotron waves, by a single cylindrical filament, embedded in a background plasma, is studied using a full-wave analytical theory developed previously (Ram & Hizanidis, Phys. Plasmas, vol. 23, 2016, 022504). The theory assumes that the plasma in and around a filament is homogeneous and cold. A detailed scattering analysis reveals a variety of common features that exist among the three distinctly different RF waves. These common attributes can be inferred intuitively based on an examination of the cold plasma dispersion relation. The physical intuition is a useful step to understanding experimental observations on scattering, as well as results from simulations that include general forms of edge plasma turbulence. While a filament can affect the propagation of RF waves, the radiation force exerted by the waves can influence the filament. The force on a filament is determined using the Maxwell stress tensor. In 1905, Poynting was the first to evaluate and measure the radiation force on an interface separating two different dielectric media (Poynting, London Edinburgh Dublin Philos. Mag. J. Sci., vol. 9, 1905, pp. 393–406). For ordinary light propagating in vacuum and incident on a glass surface, Poynting noted that the surface is ‘pulled’ towards the vacuum. In a magnetized cold plasma, there are two independent wave modes. Even if only one of these modes is excited by an RF antenna, a filament will couple power to the other mode: a consequence of electromagnetic boundary conditions. This facet of scattering has consequences on the radiation force that go beyond Poynting's seminal contribution. The direction of the force depends on the polarization of the incident wave and on the mode structure of the waves inside and in the vicinity of a filament. It can either pull the filament toward the RF source or push it away. For slow lower hybrid waves, filaments with densities greater than the ambient density are pulled in, while filaments with lower densities are pushed out, thereby enhancing the density in front of the antenna. In the case of fast helicon and ion cyclotron waves, the direction of the force depends on the plasma and wave parameters; in particular, on the ambient density. The radiation force, in all three frequency ranges, is large enough to affect the motion of a filament and could be measured experimentally. This also suggests the possibility of modifying the edge turbulence using RF waves.

The evolution of the radial profile of the rotation of a weakly magnetized plasma column is investigated experimentally in a radio-frequency argon plasma at low pressure when a strong electron current is emitted by large emissive cathodes. Current injection from large emissive cathodes over a background plasma column (with a plasma density of a few $10^{18}\ \textrm {m}^{-3}$) is characterized. Radial scans of the ion velocity show that a continuous control of the rotation profile may be obtained using two spatial configurations for the locations of the emissive cathodes (either in the centre or at the edge of the plasma column). The rotation profile results from the electric drift velocity, damped by the drag exerted on the ions. We demonstrate that the evolution of the rotation profile with the injected current is then controlled by the modification of the plasma potential profile in the presence of strongly emissive cathodes.

The propagation characteristics of linear waves in high-energy-density magnetoplasmas are investigated using a relativistic magnetohydrodynamic model based on the framework of relativistic quantum theory. Based on the covariant Wigner function approach, a relativistic quantum magnetohydrodynamic model is established. Starting from the relativistic quantum magnetohydrodynamic equations and the Maxwell equations, the dispersion equation for relativistic quantum magnetoplasmas is derived. The contributions of both quantum effects and relativistic effects are shown in the dispersion relations for perpendicular, parallel propagation with respect to a background magnetic field. Results show that the corrections of both quantum effects and relativistic effects are significant when choosing the plasma parameters of laser-based plasma compression schemes.

Electron energization during merging of magnetized plasmas is studied using the OMEGA and OMEGA EP laser facilities by colliding two plasma plumes, each containing a Biermann-battery self-generated magnetic field. Two neighbouring plasma plumes are produced by intense laser beams, and the anti-parallel Biermann fields merge and reconnect in the process of the plumes’ expansion and collision. To isolate the merging as an acceleration source, the electron energy spectra obtained from two-plume collision shots are compared with the spectra from single-plume shots. Single-plume shots exhibit an energized electron tail with energies up to ${\sim }250\ \textrm {keV}$. The electrons in merging experiments are additionally accelerated by ${\sim }50\text {--}100$ keV compared to single-plume shots.

Magnetic reconnection, a plasma process converting magnetic energy to particle kinetic energy, is often invoked to explain magnetic energy releases powering high-energy flares in astrophysical sources including pulsar wind nebulae and black hole jets. Reconnection is usually seen as the (essentially two-dimensional) nonlinear evolution of the tearing instability disrupting a thin current sheet. To test how this process operates in three dimensions, we conduct a comprehensive particle-in-cell simulation study comparing two- and three-dimensional evolution of long, thin current sheets in moderately magnetized, collisionless, relativistically hot electron–positron plasma, and find dramatic differences. We first systematically characterize this process in two dimensions, where classic, hierarchical plasmoid-chain reconnection determines energy release, and explore a wide range of initial configurations, guide magnetic field strengths and system sizes. We then show that three-dimensional (3-D) simulations of similar configurations exhibit a diversity of behaviours, including some where energy release is determined by the nonlinear relativistic drift-kink instability. Thus, 3-D current sheet evolution is not always fundamentally classical reconnection with perturbing 3-D effects but, rather, a complex interplay of multiple linear and nonlinear instabilities whose relative importance depends sensitively on the ambient plasma, minor configuration details and even stochastic events. It often yields slower but longer-lasting and ultimately greater magnetic energy release than in two dimensions. Intriguingly, non-thermal particle acceleration is astonishingly robust, depending on the upstream magnetization and guide field, but otherwise yielding similar particle energy spectra in two and three dimensions. Although the variety of underlying current sheet behaviours is interesting, the similarities in overall energy release and particle spectra may be more remarkable.

Alfvén waves as excited in black hole accretion disks and neutron star magnetospheres are the building blocks of turbulence in relativistic, magnetized plasmas. A large reservoir of magnetic energy is available in these systems, such that the plasma can be heated significantly even in the weak turbulence regime. We perform high-resolution three-dimensional simulations of counter-propagating Alfvén waves, showing that an $E_{B_{\perp }}(k_{\perp }) \propto k_{\perp }^{-2}$ energy spectrum develops as a result of the weak turbulence cascade in relativistic magnetohydrodynamics and its infinitely magnetized (force-free) limit. The plasma turbulence ubiquitously generates current sheets, which act as locations where magnetic energy dissipates. We show that current sheets form as a natural result of nonlinear interactions between counter-propagating Alfvén waves. These current sheets form owing to the compression of elongated eddies, driven by the shear induced by growing higher-order modes, and undergo a thinning process until they break-up into small-scale turbulent structures. We explore the formation of current sheets both in overlapping waves and in localized wave packet collisions. The relativistic interaction of localized Alfvén waves induces both Alfvén waves and fast waves, and efficiently mediates the conversion and dissipation of electromagnetic energy in astrophysical systems. Plasma energization through reconnection in current sheets emerging during the interaction of Alfvén waves can potentially explain X-ray emission in black hole accretion coronae and neutron star magnetospheres.

Alfvén wave collisions are the primary building blocks of the non-relativistic turbulence that permeates the heliosphere and low- to moderate-energy astrophysical systems. However, many astrophysical systems such as gamma-ray bursts, pulsar and magnetar magnetospheres and active galactic nuclei have relativistic flows or energy densities. To better understand these high-energy systems, we derive reduced relativistic magnetohydrodynamics equations and employ them to examine weak Alfvénic turbulence, dominated by three-wave interactions, in reduced relativistic magnetohydrodynamics, including the force-free, infinitely magnetized limit. We compare both numerical and analytical solutions to demonstrate that many of the findings from non-relativistic weak turbulence are retained in relativistic systems. But, an important distinction in the relativistic limit is the inapplicability of a formally incompressible limit, i.e. there exists finite coupling to the compressible fast mode regardless of the strength of the magnetic field. Since fast modes can propagate across field lines, this mechanism provides a route for energy to escape strongly magnetized systems, e.g. magnetar magnetospheres. However, we find that the fast-Alfvén coupling is diminished in the limit of oblique propagation.

A one-dimensional (1-D) model for thinning of the Earth's plasma sheet (Chao et al., Planet. Space Sci., vol. 25, 1977, p. 703) according to the current disruption (CD) model of auroral breakup is extended to two dimensions. A rarefaction wave, which is a signature component of the CD model, is generated with an initial disturbance. In the 1-D gas model, the rarefaction wave propagates tailward at sound velocity and is assumed to cause thinning. Extending to a two-dimensional (2-D) gas model of a simplified plasma sheet configuration, the rarefaction wave is weakened, and the thinning ceases to propagate. Extending further to a 2-D plasma model by adding magnetic field into the lobes, the rarefaction wave is quickly lost in the plasma sheet recompression, but the plasma sheet thinning is still present. It propagates at a slower velocity than a 1-D model suggests, behind a wave train of pulses of increased pressure generated by the thinning process itself. This shows that the dynamics of plasma sheet thinning may be dominated by sheet–lobe interactions that are absent from the 1-D model and may not support the behaviour assumed by the CD model.

Standard quasilinear descriptions are based on the constant magnetic field form of the quasilinear operator so improperly treat the trapped electron modifications associated with tokamak geometry. Moreover, successive poloidal transits of the Landau resonance during lower hybrid current drive in a tokamak are well correlated, and these geometrical details must be properly retained to account for the presence of trapped electrons that do not contribute to the driven current. The recently derived quasilinear operator in tokamak geometry accounts for these features and finds that the quasilinear diffusivity is proportional to a delta function with a transit or bounce averaged argument (rather than a local Landau resonance condition). The new quasilinear operator is combined with the Cordey (Nucl. Fusion, vol. 16, 1976, pp. 499–507) eigenfunctions to properly derive a rather simple and compact analytic expression for the trapped electron modifications to the driven lower hybrid current and the efficiency of the current drive.

The impact of temperature inhomogeneity, surface charge and surface mass densities on the stability analysis of charged surface waves at the interface between dense, incompressible, radiative, self-gravitating magnetized electron–ion plasma and vacuum is investigated. For such an incompressible plasma system, the temperature inhomogeneity is governed by an energy balance equation. Adopting the one-fluid magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) approximation, a general dispersion relation is obtained for capillary surface waves, which takes into account gravitational, radiative and magnetic field effects. The dispersion relation is analysed to obtain the conditions under which the plasma–vacuum interface may become unstable. In the absence of electromagnetic (EM) pressure, astrophysical objects undergo gravitational collapse through Jeans surface oscillations in contrast to the usual central contraction of massive objects due to enhanced gravity. EM radiation does not affect the dispersion relation much, but actually tends to stabilize the Jeans surface instability. In certain particular cases, pure gravitational radiation may propagate on the plasma vacuum interface. The growth rate of radiative dissipative instability is obtained in terms of the wavevector. Our theoretical model of the Jeans surface instability is applicable in astrophysical environments and also in laboratory plasmas.

The electron runaway phenomenon in plasmas depends sensitively on the momentum- space dynamics. However, efficient simulation of the global evolution of systems involving runaway electrons typically requires a reduced fluid description. This is needed, for example, in the design of essential runaway mitigation methods for tokamaks. In this paper, we present a method to include the effect of momentum-dependent spatial transport in the runaway avalanche growth rate. We quantify the reduction of the growth rate in the presence of electron diffusion in stochastic magnetic fields and show that the spatial transport can raise the effective critical electric field. Using a perturbative approach, we derive a set of equations that allows treatment of the effect of spatial transport on runaway dynamics in the presence of radial variation in plasma parameters. This is then used to demonstrate the effect of spatial transport in current quench simulations for ITER-like plasmas with massive material injection. We find that in scenarios with sufficiently slow current quench, owing to moderate impurity and deuterium injection, the presence of magnetic perturbations reduces the final runaway current considerably. Perturbations localised at the edge are not effective in suppressing the runaways, unless the runaway generation is off-axis, in which case they may lead to formation of strong current sheets at the interface of the confined and perturbed regions.

Space plasmas are known to be out of (local) thermodynamic equilibrium, as observations show direct or indirect evidences of non-thermal velocity distributions of plasma particles. Prominent are the anisotropies relative to the magnetic field, anisotropic temperatures, field-aligned beams or drifting populations, but also, the suprathermal populations enhancing the high-energy tails of the observed distributions. Drifting bi-Kappa distribution functions can provide a good representation of these features and enable for a kinetic fundamental description of the dispersion and stability of these collision-poor plasmas, where particle–particle collisions are rare but wave–particle interactions appear to play a dominant role in the dynamics. In the present paper we derive the full set of components of the dispersion tensor for magnetized plasma populations modelled by drifting bi-Kappa distributions. A new solver called DIS-K (DIspersion Solver for Kappa plasmas) is proposed to solve numerically the dispersion relations of high complexity. The solver is validated by comparing with the damped and unstable wave solutions obtained with other codes, operating in the limits of drifting Maxwellian and non-drifting Kappa models. These new theoretical tools enable more realistic characterizations, both analytical and numerical, of wave fluctuations and instabilities in complex kinetic configurations measured in-situ in space plasmas.

The effect of different density profiles on micron-sized hydrogen plasma spheres is investigated when the plasma gets irradiated with an ultrashort circularly polarized laser. In this study, we show that significant improvement in the characteristics of the accelerated protons viz. maximum proton energy, as well as their monoenergetic behaviour, is possible by using a plasma sphere having a tailored density profile. A linear-shaped density inhomogeneity is introduced in the plasma sphere such that the density is peaked at the centre and gradually dropping outwards. The density gradient is tuned by changing the peak density at the centre. The optimum regime of steepness is found for the maximum energy attained by the protons where the target is opaque enough for the radiation pressure to play its role, however not too opaque to inhibit efficient target heating. A novel Gaussian-shaped density profile is suggested which plays an important role in suppressing the sheath field. With a decreased rear-side field, a visible improvement of the monoenergetic feature of the protons is observed.

This work aims to analyse the possibility of directly driven imploding spherical targets in order to create a source of energetic particles (neutrons, protons, alphas, tritium and 3He ions) for the Laser MégaJoule facility. D3He gas-filled spherical SiO2 glass pellets, irradiated by an absorbed laser intensity of 1014 W cm−2 or 1015 W cm−2 have been considered. Depending on the absorbed laser intensity and the amount of the ablated glass layer two distinct regimes have been identified: a massive pusher and an exploding pusher. Both regimes are analysed in terms of hydrodynamics and fast particle spectra. Energetic particle time-resolved spectra are calculated and used to infer ionic temperatures and total areal densities. A parametric study has been performed by varying the shell thickness and target inner radius for both laser absorbed intensities.

Particle acceleration via magnetic reconnection is a fundamental process in astrophysical plasmas. Experimental architectures are able to confirm a wide variety of particle dynamics following the two-dimensional Sweet–Parker model, but are limited in their reproduction of the fan-spine magnetic field topology about three-dimensional (3-D) null points. Specifically, there is not yet an experiment featuring driven 3-D torsional magnetic reconnection. To move in this direction, this paper expands on recent work toward the design of an experimental infrastructure for inducing 3-D torsional fan reconnection by predicting feasible particle acceleration profiles. Solutions to the steady-state, kinematic, resistive magnetohydrodynamic equations are used to numerically calculate particle trajectories from a localized resistivity profile using well-understood laboratory plasma parameters. We confine a thin, 10 eV helium sheath following the snowplough model into the region of this localized resistivity and find that it is accelerated to energies of ${\approx }2$ keV. This sheath is rapidly accelerated and focused along the spine axis propagating a few centimetres from the reconnection region. These dynamics suggest a novel architecture that may hold promise for future experiments studying solar coronal particle acceleration and for technology applications such as spacecraft propulsion.

A warm degenerate plasma (containing ultra-relativistically or non-relativistically warm degenerate inertia-less electron species, non-relativistically warm degenerate inertial light nucleus species and stationary heavy nucleus species) is considered. The basic features of planar and non-planar solitary structures associated with the degenerate pressure-driven nucleus-acoustic waves propagating in such a warm degenerate plasma system are investigated. The reductive perturbation method, which is valid for small- but finite-amplitude solitary waves, is used. It is found that the effects of non-planar cylindrical and spherical geometries, non- and ultra-relativistically degenerate electron species and the temperature of degenerate electron species significantly modify the basic features (i.e. speed, amplitude and width) of the solitary potential structures associated with degenerate pressure-driven nucleus-acoustic waves. The warm degenerate plasma model under consideration is applicable not only to all cold white dwarfs, but also to many hot white dwarfs, such as DQ white dwarfs, white dwarf H1504+65, white dwarf PG 0948+534, etc.
