A model for glacier flow is developed which incorporates longitudinal deviatoric stress contributions to the field equations. The underlying assumptions may be applied to develop models for various situations. Here, they are developed for steady-state and non-steady-state sliding glaciers in plane flow. The models reduce to a proper generalization of plane-flow pseudo-hydrostatic theory if longitudinal deviatoric stresses are neglected in comparison to basal shear stresses. Solution of this simpler reduced model allows an estimate to be made of the magnitude of the longitudinal deviatoric stress to test if it is negligible or, more generally, investigate under what conditions it can be neglected. The steady-state model predicts that longitudinal deviatoric stresses are negligible for very arbitrary non-uniform sliding-law distributions provided that the following conditions exist: the region must be distant from an ice divide or terminus and subject to normal (not extreme) accumulation or ablation. On the other hand, examples are produced where, under non-steady conditions, longitudinal deviatoric stresses are important and even dominant.

The problem of measuring surface height and snowpack characteristics from satellite radar altimeter echoes is investigated. In this paper, we perform an analysis of the ERS1 altimeter dataset acquired during a 3 day repeat orbit. The analysis reveals that there are temporal variations in shapes of the radar altimeter echo and that these variations are linked to meteorological phenomena. The time- and space-scales over which these variations apply are a few to tens of days and a few hundred kilometres, respectively. This phenomenon, if not accounted for, can create error in the height measurement. A numerical echo model is used to recover snowpack characteristics by taking advantage of the temporal variations of the radar echoes. A map of penetration depth of the radar waves in the Ku band over the Antarctic continent is obtained and suggests that grain-size produces the dominant effect on radar extinction in the snowpack at this frequency. Finally, a procedure is proposed to correct the height measurement within the context of ice-sheet mass-balance survey.

The debris-rich ice from the bottom 6 m of the 82 m deep CAROLINE (Coastal Antarctic Record of Last Interglacial Natural Environment) ice core reaching bedrock, and from five 2 m long surface cores at Moraine Prudhomme in Terre Adélie (Antarctica) is described and compared to debris-laden ice from the core-drilling site DIO. Isotopic, total-gas content, CO2 concentration and SEM investigations of embedded particles, together with ice textures and fabrics, rule out “pressure-melting” regelation around bed obstacles or “freezing-on” as possible mechanisms for the debris entrainment at the ice-bedrock interface. It is suggested that the debris entrapment by purely mechanical means (e.g. shearing) is an efficient process in forming basal ice layers (BIL) at sub-freezing temperatures. This process might be dominant at the margin of the Antarctic ice sheet where no ice shelf exists and where a ramp terminus or a buttressing coastal relief induces compressive flow.

Calculations of the regional variation of net mass balance around Crary Ice Rise, Antarctica, show significant rates of thickening up-stream of the ice rise and significant thinning down-stream (assuming zero basal melting or freezing). Thickening also is occurring on the south-west side of the ice rise nearest the Transantarctic Mountains. These imbalances imply migration of the rise and help explain its current non-equilibrium shape. The pattern of a suture line down-stream of the rise indicates a quasi-periodic mechanism of rift formation.

Nivation is a collective noun identifying a set of geomorphic processes, comprised of an indeterminate number of elements and of unknown relative importance, for which there is little likelihood of ever producing a precise definition. Instead, attention should first be directed towards the relationships between snow-packs and individual geomorphic processes. The relationship between freezing amplitude in the bedrock, snow cover, and aspect at an Arctic site in northern Norway and an alpine site in the Front Range, Colorado, U.S.A. is complex. Comparison of field data and laboratory criteria permit several conflicting interpretations. If oscillations across 0°C, regardless of freezing amplitude, are critical, the alpine site is potentially a more active freeze-thaw weathering regime, with a primary springtime peak and a secondary fall peak. If a freezing amplitude of –5°C is required for effective freeze-thaw weathering then the alpine site is largely inactive and the Arctic active (but with only a single fall peak). Chemical weathering is much more important at snow-patch sites than has traditionally been recognized. Mass wasting at colluvial sites subject to snow patches is dominated by interaction between overland flow and solifluction when the site is unvegetated, and by solifluction when it is vegetated. Given contemporary knowledge of snow and glacial geomorphology, there appears to be no threshold, only differences of intensity. Resolution of the disruptive mechanism associated with bedrock freezing and its constraining temperature and moisture requirements is the most pressing present problem in the field of snow geomorphology.

Steady plane flow under gravity of an axisymmetric ice sheet resting on a horizontal rigid bed, subject to surface accumulation and ablation, basal drainage, and basal sliding is treated according to a power law between shear traction and velocity. The surface accumulation is taken to depend on height, and the drainage and sliding coefficient also depend on the height of overlying ice. The ice is described as a general non-linearly viscous incompressible fluid, and temperature variation through the ice sheet is neglected. Illustrations are presented for Glen’s power law (including the special case of a Newtonian fluid), and the polynomial law of Colbeck and Evans. The analysis follows that of Morland and Johnson (1980) where the analogous problem for an ice sheet deforming under plane flow was considered. Comparisons are made between the two models and it is found that the effect of the third dimension is to reduce (or leave unchanged) the aspect ratio for the cases considered, although no general formula can be obtained. This reduction is seen to depend on both the surface accumulation and the sliding law.

In conducting tension and compression tests on snow samples, strains and strain-rates are usually determined from the displacements of the ends of the samples. In this work, a strain-gage which mounts directly onto the snow sample during testing, was developed and was found to give accurate and direct measurements of strain and strain-rates.

A commercially available 0-28 pF variable capacitor was modified to perform the required strain measurements. It is a polished metallic plunger sliding inside a metal-coated glass tube. The plunger and tube were each soldered to the end of a spring-steel wire arm. To the other end of these arms were soldered to 10 mm square pads made of thin brass shim stock. The whole device weighs 2.5 g and the low coefficient of friction in the capacitor resulted in a very low actuation force. To mount the strain gage, the pads are wetted and frozen onto the snow sample.

A high degree of sensitivity was achieved through the use of “phase-lock-loop” electronic circuitry. The capacitance change caused by the strain in the sample, changes the frequency of output signal from an oscillator and thus causes the change in output from the system. In the locked state, to which the system is constantly driven by a feed-back loop, the system output is almost ripple free.

The strain gages were calibrated in the field in order to take into account the effects of very low field temperatures. The calibration curves were almost linear over the travel of 15 mm, the maximum limit. The sensitivity of the system is 4 mV per strain unit, but this could be increased by an order of magnitude by minor adjustments in the circuit.

Constant strain-rate tensile tests were performed on natural snow at Berthoud Pass, Colorado, U.S.A., in the density range of 140-290 kg m-3. Four strain gages were mounted onto the samples to sense any non-uniform deformation which otherwise would have gone unnoticed or caused scatter in the data. The average indication of these gages was used to construct stress—strain curves for various types of snow at different strain-rates. The effect of strain-rate on the behavior of snow was studied.

“Ratcheting” in the stress-strain curve in the region where the snow becomes plastic was observed first by Kinosita in his compression tests. A similar phenomenon was observed in these tension tests. It was found that directly measured strain is quite different from that which would be calculated from sample end movement. Strain softening was not observed in these tests up to total strains of 8%. The strain-rate effects found were comparable to the results of other investigators.

On 19 and 20 August 1984, an ice-marginal lake drained through a subglacial tunnel beneath the ede of the Greenland ice sheet, discharging about 22.3 × 106 m3 of water in less than 19 h. The event, which may occur annually, modified ice-margin dynamics at the lake site and along a 3 km stretch of ice margin 11 km down-stream.

The longitudinal component of the velocity of a particle at or near a glacier surface is considered, its position as a function of time being termed its trajectory. Functional relationships are derived for obtaining the trajectory from the spatial distribution of velocity and for obtaining the velocity distribution from the trajectory. It is established that the trajectory end-points impose only an integral condition on the velocity distribution, and that no individual point on the velocity distribution can be determined if only the end-points are known. An example is given of a deduced velocity distribution that is consistent with (although not uniquely determined by) the end-points of several trajectories on the lower reach of Columbia Glacier, Alaska. It is shown that constructing a velocity distribution by assigning the average trajectory velocity to the trajectory mid-point can be subject to errors of several per cent for velocity distribution features that are typical of actual glaciers. The error in this method is determined, and closed-form expressions for the trajectory are obtained, for linear velocity distributions and for two classes of second-degree distributions. The class of functions is identified to which the velocity distribution must belong for this error to be zero.

The identification of a small region of grounded ice in the north-western sector of the Ross Ice Shelf has forced a re-evaluation of the mass-balance calculations carried out by Thomas and Bentley (1978). Those authors concluded that the Ross Ice Shelf up-stream of Crary Ice Rise was thickening, but they did not take into account the effects on the velocity field of grounded ice (of which they were unaware), which is located near the input gate to their volume element. Reasonable estimates of the degree to which the ice velocity just up-stream of the grounded ice is diminished indicate that it is no longer possible to conclude that the ice shelf is thickening using Thomas and Bentley’s original flow band. Therefore, a new flow band was chosen which was grid east of Thomas and Bentley’s band and unaffected by any nearby grounded areas. The mass balance in this flow band was found to be zero within experimental error; a difference exceeding about 0.2 m a−1 in magnitude between the thickening and bottom freeze-on rates is unlikely.

This paper presents results from studies of snow-drifts formed by vertical-slat “Canadian” and horizontal-slat “Wyoming” snow fences having 50% porosity and heights H from 0.8 to 3.8 m, on nearly level terrain. Characteristics of equilibrium lee drifts behind the Wyoming fence include cross-sectional area 19.3H 2, length 30H, maximum depth 1.20H. and water-equivalent volume 6.8H2.18. Up-wind drift dimensions include maximum depth 0.5H and length 12H. Drifts behind Canadian fences are about 25% smaller than for the Wyoming design. Polynomial regression equations are fitted to drift profiles for both fence types. Relationships are presented for the effects of wind orientation and curvature of drifts near fence ends, as well as empirical equations describing pre-equilibrium geometry relative to degree of saturation. Mean density ρ (kg/m3) of drifted snow having depth y (m), is given by ρ = 376+158 log y.

Geosat-altimeter wave forms from the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets are analyzed using an algorithm based upon a combined surface-and volume-scattering model. The results demonstrate that sub-surface volume-scattering occurs over major parts of the ice sheets. Quantitative estimates of geographic variations in the near-surface ice-sheet properties are derived by retracking individual altimeter wave forms. The derived surface properties correlate with elevation, latitude and microwave brightness-temperature data. Specifically, the extinction coefficient of snow obtained by this method varies from 0.48 to 0.13 m−1 over the latitudes from 65° to 72°N on the central part of the Greenland ice sheet and from 0.20 to 0.10 m−1 over a section of Wilkes Land in East Antarctica where the elevation increases from 2550 to 3150 m.

Analysis of passive-microwave data over East Antarctica shows that the brightness temperature increases with elevation as the extinction coefficient decreases. Larger snow grain-sizes occur at lower elevations of the ice sheet because of higher mean annual temperatures. The larger grain-sizes increase the extinction coefficient of snow and decrease the emitted energy (brightness temperature) from greater snow depths. The passive-microwave data are also used to determine the average number of melt d year−1 (1979–87) for the central part of the Greenland ice sheet. For latitudes from 65° to 68.5° N, the average number of melt days decreases from 3.5 to 0.25 d year, whereas no melt events are observed for latitudes above 69°N over the 8 year period. Snow subjected to alternate melting and freezing has enhanced grain-sizes compared to that of dry snow. This accounts for the larger values and larger spatial variations of ke on the Greenland ice sheet compared to East Antarctica, where surface temperatures are never high enough to cause surface melting.

Satellite imagery has substantially improved the quality of sea-ice observation over the last decades. Therefore, for a 25 year period, a statistical study based on the monthly Arctic sea-ice data and the monthly mean 700 mbar maps of the Northern Hemisphere was carried out to establish the relationships between sea-ice conditions and the general circulation of the atmosphere. It was found that sea-ice conditions have two opposing effects on the zonal circulation intensity, depending on the season. Heavier than normal ice in winter causes stronger than normal zonal circulation in the subsequent months, whereas heavier than normal ice in the summer-fall causes weaker zonal circulation in the subsequent months. Analyzing the two sectors, the Atlantic and Pacific ones separately, a negative correlation was found, which means a heavy ice year in the Atlantic Ocean is normally associated with a light one in the Pacific Ocean and vice versa.

Bending shear was observed to produce nearly vertical shear bands in a calving ice wall standing on dry land on Deception Island (lat. 63.0°S., long. 60.6 W.), and slabs calved straight downward when shear rupture occurred along these shear bands (Hughes, 1989). A formula for the calving rate was developed from the Deception Island data, and we have attempted to justify generalizing this formula to include ice walls standing along beaches or in water. These are environments in which a wave-washed groove develops along the base of the ice wall or along a water line above the base. The rate of wave erosion provides an alternative mechanism for controlling the calving rate in these environments. We have determined that the rate at which bending creep produces nearly vertical shear bands, along which shear rupture occurs, controls the calving rate in all environments. Shear rupture occurs at a calving shear stress of about 1 bar. Our results justify using the calving formula to compute the calving rate of ice walls in computer models of ice-sheet dynamics. This is especially important in simulating retreat of Northern Hemisphere ice sheets during the last deglaciation, when marine and lacustrine environments were common along retreating ice margins. These margins would have been ice walls standing along beaches or in water, because floating ice shelves are not expected in the ablation zone of retreating ice sheets.

The position of the UpB camp on Ice Stream B, West Antarctica, has been measured 14 times during three field seasons. TRANSIT (doppler) satellite receivers were used. At the resolution of our measurements (2 m), no significant velocity variation was detected over time intervals ranging from 1 d to 2 years.
