A spatial epidemic process where the individuals are located at positions in the Euclidean space R2 is considered. The infective individuals, with an infection period that is exponentially distributed with parameter µ, move in R2 according to a Brownian motion with a diffusion coefficient σ2. The susceptible individuals may also move. But we shall use the approximation that they remain unchanged in numbers and therefore assume that the averaged ‘density' of susceptibles per unit area is the same throughout space and time. The transition probability rate of infection of a susceptible in the infinitesimal element of area dy by an infective in dx is assumed to be a function h(x – y |) of the distance | x – y | between x and y. Then our process can be considered as a two-dimensional birth and death Brownian motion. Let be the number of infective individuals in the set D at time t and . The almost everywhere convergence of the random variables to a limit random variable W(D) is established.

The branching diffusion with immigration is studied. Under general branching and diffusion laws, the process is shown to be mixing, according to Brillinger's definition. Brillinger's central limit theorem for spatially homogeneous mixing processes is generalized to prove that, under a renormalization transformation, the distribution of the branching diffusion with immigration converges to a completely random Gaussian random measure. In addition, the existence of a steady-state distribution is proven in the case of subcritical branching, and this distribution is shown to be mixing. Hence the steady-state random field also obeys a spatial central limit theorem.

Neyman, Park and Scott (1956) describe an experiment which they performed to determine the spatial distribution of Tribolium confusum developing within a closed container. To explain the concentration of beetles at the boundary a birth–death–migration model is developed in which the beetles may migrate over a set of lattice points, and this is shown to produce a distribution of the required shape. Not only is this distribution independent of the number of lattice points, but it is also indistinguishable from the associated diffusion process.

The purpose of this paper is to give some very simple applications of martingales to epidemics. The results are all connected with stopping times T (for instance the classical end of epidemic) and include the expression of the joint generating function Laplace transform of and and simple relations between moments of these three variables. (Here Xt and Yt respectively denote the numbers of susceptibles and carriers.) We also give several relations between different types of epidemics. Although this paper only deals with Downton's model, some of the methods are still valid for more general models.

The limiting behavior of the probability of extinction of critical age-dependent branching processes with generation dependence is obtained using Goldstein's methods. Regularity conditions on the mean and variance of the birth distributions are assumed. Also the lifespan distribution is assumed to satisfy suitable regularity conditions.

The stochastic version of the simple epidemic is considered in this paper. A method which has computational advantages is developed for computing the probability distribution of the process. The method is based on the Jordan canonical form of the matrix representing the system of differential-difference equations for the simple epidemic. It is also shown that the method can be applied to the general epidemic as well as any other right-shift process.

We consider the standard epidemic model and several extensions of this model, including Downton's carrier-borne epidemic model. A random time-scale transformation is used to obtain equations for the size distribution and to derive asymptotic approximations for the size distribution for each of the models

In biological populations, several strategies for engaging in intraspecific contests may be present. Investigations of stability show that the mean strategy in use in the population can prove stable but that neutrally stable and gradually changing polymorphisms in strategy are to be expected when the contest affects reproductive success.

A simple epidemic process in which the number of individuals who can become infected at any point in time is itself a random variable is described. The discrete asymptotic behaviour of such a process is discussed. In particular, the associated marginal distribution of the limiting process is considered.

We consider an individual which ultimately dies or divides, and whose state is subject to drift and jumps caused by external perturbations. The mortality and division rates being state-dependent, the present paper deals with the time-dependent distribution of the individual's position in the state-space and with its lifetime distribution. The results are applied to a model of a biological cell which is exposed to ionizing radiation. Under certain conditions on the parameters of the type of perturbation one can show that the division probability decreases and the mean regeneration time increases with increasing frequency and ‘effect' of the perturbations.

Zipf's laws are probability distributions on the positive integers which decay algebraically. Such laws have been shown empirically to describe a large class of phenomena, including frequency of words usage, populations of cities, distributions of personal incomes, and distributions of biological genera and species, to mention only a few. In this paper we present a Dirichlet–multinomial urn model for describing the above phenomena from a stochastic point of view.

We derive the Zipf's law under certain regularity conditions; some limit theorems are also obtained for the urn model under consideration.

In this paper it is shown that a random time-scale transformation leads to a simple derivation of some asymptotic results describing the progress of a major outbreak in the standard epidemic model. These results find application in approximation of the size distribution and in estimation of the threshold parameter.

Consider the pieces of a randomly broken stick. How long is the j th longest piece? How many breaks are necessary for getting all pieces less than a given length? These and related questions are studied in particular when the number of pieces is large. Using simple properties of the exponential distribution new proofs are given of old results and new results are obtained.

The connection between the age distribution of a discrete-time Markov chain and a certain time-reversed Markov chain is exhibited. A method for finding properties of age distributions follows simply from this approach. The results, which have application in several areas in applied probability, are illustrated by examples from population genetics.

In the Taylor series expansion about s = 1 of the probability generating function f(s) of a non-negative integer-valued random variable with finite nth factorial moment the remainder term is proportional to another p.g.f. This leads to simple proofs of other power series expansions for p.g.f.'s, including an inversion formula giving the distribution in terms of the moments (when this can be done). Old and new inequalities for the extinction probability of a branching process are established.

In addition to the concept of the evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS), developed specifically for considering intraspecific conflicts, concepts such as the Nash equilibrium from game theory and the attractor or sink from dynamical systems theory appear relevant to the problem of characterizing populations of stable composition. The three concepts mentioned are discussed for one simple standard population model. It is found that evolutionarily stable strategies of one type are necessarily Nash equilibrium strategies, although the converse is not true. The dynamical systems characterization is found to provide a model for populations susceptible to invasion by ‘co-operative' strategies, but capable of evolving back in average to the original equilibrium.

The age and type distributions (conditioned on non-extinction) in a critical Bellman-Harris process are shown to converge in probability to a deterministic distribution under a finite first-moment hypothesis on the offspring distribution and a tightness condition on the lifetime distributions.

We prove in the setting of the system of unbounded spins developed by Lebowitz and Presutti, a strong variational principle analogous to Lanford and Ruelle's for discrete spins. We establish this result for finite-range regular and superstable potentials satisfying a condition which enables us to define the thermodynamic energy of the system.

Let F be the infinite-horizon minimal cost function, and FKS the minimal cost function for horizon s and terminal cost function K. In Section 2 we define the ‘stable domain' (the set of K for which ), determine some of its properties, and relate these to the questions of stability of the process (whether ) and whether a given solution of the dynamic programming equation can be identified with F These ideas are developed in Sections 3 and 5 for various strengthenings and weakenings of the hypothesis of non-negative costs. In Section 5 we derive a new sufficient condition for stability and for characterisation of F.

A general branching process is extended to allow life length and reproduction probabilities to depend on randomly changing environmental states. First and second moments of the population size with respect to time are derived assuming that the environmental process is semi-Markovian. The results are similar to Markov-renewal type equations which allow, under discrete time, iterative computation of both moments of the population through time.
