Finding the so-called characteristic numbers of the complex projective plane $ \mathbb{C} {P}^{2} $ is a classical problem of enumerative geometry posed by Zeuthen more than a century ago. For a given $d$ and $g$ one has to find the number of degree $d$ genus $g$ curves that pass through a certain generic configuration of points and at the same time are tangent to a certain generic configuration of lines. The total number of points and lines in these two configurations is $3d- 1+ g$ so that the answer is a finite integer number. In this paper we translate this classical problem to the corresponding enumerative problem of tropical geometry in the case when $g= 0$. Namely, we show that the tropical problem is well posed and establish a special case of the correspondence theorem that ensures that the corresponding tropical and classical numbers coincide. Then we use the floor diagram calculus to reduce the problem to pure combinatorics. As a consequence, we express genus 0 characteristic numbers of $ \mathbb{C} {P}^{2} $ in terms of open Hurwitz numbers.

We prove formulas for the number of Jordan blocks of the maximal size for local monodromies of one-parameter degenerations of complex algebraic varieties where the bound of the size comes from the monodromy theorem. In the case when the general fibers are smooth and compact, the proof calculates some part of the weight spectral sequence of the limit mixed Hodge structure of Steenbrink. In the singular case, we can prove a similar formula for the monodromy on the cohomology with compact supports, but not on the usual cohomology. We also show that the number can really depend on the position of singular points in the embedded resolution, even in the isolated singularity case, and hence there are no simple combinatorial formulas using the embedded resolution in general.

This paper proves two results on the field of rationality $\mathbb{Q}({\it\pi})$ for an automorphic representation ${\it\pi}$, which is the subfield of $\mathbb{C}$ fixed under the subgroup of $\text{Aut}(\mathbb{C})$ stabilizing the isomorphism class of the finite part of ${\it\pi}$. For general linear groups and classical groups, our first main result is the finiteness of the set of discrete automorphic representations ${\it\pi}$ such that ${\it\pi}$ is unramified away from a fixed finite set of places, ${\it\pi}_{\infty }$ has a fixed infinitesimal character, and $[\mathbb{Q}({\it\pi}):\mathbb{Q}]$ is bounded. The second main result is that for classical groups, $[\mathbb{Q}({\it\pi}):\mathbb{Q}]$ grows to infinity in a family of automorphic representations in level aspect whose infinite components are discrete series in a fixed $L$-packet under mild conditions.

Let $\nu _{f}(n)$ be the $n\mathrm{th}$ normalized Fourier coefficient of a Hecke–Maass cusp form $f$ for ${\rm SL }(2,\mathbb{Z})$ and let $\alpha $ be a real number. We prove strong oscillations of the argument of $\nu _{f}(n)\mu (n) \exp (2\pi i n \alpha )$ as $n$ takes consecutive integral values.

A compact semisimple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ induces a Poisson structure $\pi _{\mathbb{S}}$ on the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}(\mathfrak{g}^*)$ in $\mathfrak{g}^*$. We compute the moduli space of Poisson structures on $\mathbb{S}(\mathfrak{g}^*)$ around $\pi _{\mathbb{S}}$. This is the first explicit computation of a Poisson moduli space in dimension greater or equal than three around a degenerate (i.e. not symplectic) Poisson structure.

A trisymplectic structure on a complex $2n$-manifold is a three-dimensional space ${\rm\Omega}$ of closed holomorphic forms such that any element of ${\rm\Omega}$ has constant rank $2n$, $n$ or zero, and degenerate forms in ${\rm\Omega}$ belong to a non-degenerate quadric hypersurface. We show that a trisymplectic manifold is equipped with a holomorphic 3-web and the Chern connection of this 3-web is holomorphic, torsion-free, and preserves the three symplectic forms. We construct a trisymplectic structure on the moduli of regular rational curves in the twistor space of a hyperkähler manifold, and define a trisymplectic reduction of a trisymplectic manifold, which is a complexified form of a hyperkähler reduction. We prove that the trisymplectic reduction in the space of regular rational curves on the twistor space of a hyperkähler manifold $M$ is compatible with the hyperkähler reduction on $M$. As an application of these geometric ideas, we consider the ADHM construction of instantons and show that the moduli space of rank $r$, charge $c$ framed instanton bundles on $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^{3}$ is a smooth trisymplectic manifold of complex dimension $4rc$. In particular, it follows that the moduli space of rank two, charge $c$ instanton bundles on $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^{3}$ is a smooth complex manifold dimension $8c-3$, thus settling part of a 30-year-old conjecture.

We study the McKay correspondence for representations of the cyclic group of order $p$ in characteristic $p$. The main tool is the motivic integration generalized to quotient stacks associated to representations. Our version of the change of variables formula leads to an explicit computation of the stringy invariant of the quotient variety. A consequence is that a crepant resolution of the quotient variety (if any) has topological Euler characteristic $p$ as in the tame case. Also, we link a crepant resolution with a count of Artin–Schreier extensions of the power series field with respect to weights determined by ramification jumps and the representation.

We obtain, via the formalism of tensor actions, a complete classification of the localizing subcategories of the stable derived category of any affine scheme that has hypersurface singularities or is a complete intersection in a regular scheme; in particular, this classifies the thick subcategories of the singularity categories of such rings. The analogous result is also proved for certain locally complete intersection schemes. It is also shown that from each of these classifications one can deduce the (relative) telescope conjecture.

We prove that exact functors between the categories of perfect complexes supported on projective schemes are of Fourier–Mukai type if the functor satisfies a condition weaker than being fully faithful. We also get generalizations of the results in the literature in the case without support conditions. Some applications are discussed and, along the way, we prove that the category of perfect supported complexes has a strongly unique enhancement.

We prove arithmetic Hilbert–Samuel type theorems for semi-positive singular hermitian line bundles of finite height. This includes the log-singular metrics of Burgos–Kramer–Kühn. The results apply in particular to line bundles of modular forms on some non-compact Shimura varieties. As an example, we treat the case of Hilbert modular surfaces, establishing an arithmetic analogue of the classical result expressing the dimensions of spaces of cusp forms in terms of special values of Dedekind zeta functions.

Let $\mathfrak{g}=\mbox{Lie}(G)$ be the Lie algebra of a simple algebraic group $G$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$. Let $e$ be a nilpotent element of $\mathfrak{g}$ and let $\mathfrak{g}_e=\mbox{Lie}(G_e)$ where $G_e$ stands for the stabiliser of $e$ in $G$. For $\mathfrak{g}$ classical, we give an explicit combinatorial formula for the codimension of $[\mathfrak{g}_e,\mathfrak{g}_e]$ in $\mathfrak{g}_e$ and use it to determine those $e\in \mathfrak{g}$ for which the largest commutative quotient $U(\mathfrak{g},e)^{\mbox{ab}}$ of the finite $W$-algebra $U(\mathfrak{g},e)$ is isomorphic to a polynomial algebra. It turns out that this happens if and only if $e$ lies in a unique sheet of $\mathfrak{g}$. The nilpotent elements with this property are called non-singular in the paper. Confirming a recent conjecture of Izosimov, we prove that a nilpotent element $e\in \mathfrak{g}$ is non-singular if and only if the maximal dimension of the geometric quotients $\mathcal{S}/G$, where $\mathcal{S}$ is a sheet of $\mathfrak{g}$ containing $e$, coincides with the codimension of $[\mathfrak{g}_e,\mathfrak{g}_e]$ in $\mathfrak{g}_e$ and describe all non-singular nilpotent elements in terms of partitions. We also show that for any nilpotent element $e$ in a classical Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ the closed subset of Specm  $U(\mathfrak{g},e)^{\mbox{ab}}$ consisting of all points fixed by the natural action of the component group of $G_e$ is isomorphic to an affine space. Analogues of these results for exceptional Lie algebras are also obtained and applications to the theory of primitive ideals are given.

Assuming a particular case of the Borisov–Alexeev–Borisov conjecture, we prove that finite subgroups of the automorphism group of a finitely generated field over $\mathbb{Q}$ have bounded orders. Further, we investigate which algebraic varieties have groups of birational selfmaps satisfying the Jordan property. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, all varieties are assumed to be algebraic, geometrically irreducible and defined over an arbitrary field $\Bbbk$ of characteristic zero.

We construct categorical braid group actions from 2-representations of a Heisenberg algebra. These actions are induced by certain complexes which generalize spherical (Seidel–Thomas) twists and are reminiscent of the Rickard complexes defined by Chuang–Rouquier. Conjecturally, one can relate our complexes to Rickard complexes using categorical vertex operators.

We introduce a new class of autoequivalences that act on the derived categories of certain vector bundles over Grassmannians. These autoequivalences arise from Grassmannian flops: they generalize Seidel–Thomas spherical twists, which can be seen as arising from standard flops. We first give a simple algebraic construction, which is well suited to explicit computations. We then give a geometric construction using spherical functors which we prove is equivalent.

In this paper we examine different problems regarding complete intersection varieties of high multidegree in a smooth complex projective variety. First we prove an existence theorem for jet differential equations that generalizes a theorem of Diverio. Then we show how one can deduce hyperbolicity for generic complete intersections of high multidegree and high codimension from the known results on hypersurfaces. Finally, motivated by a conjecture of Debarre, we focus on the positivity of the cotangent bundle of complete intersections, and prove some results towards this conjecture; among other things, we prove that a generic complete intersection surface of high multidegree in a projective space of dimension at least four has an ample cotangent bundle.

Let $\def \xmlpi #1{}\def \mathsfbi #1{\boldsymbol {\mathsf {#1}}}\let \le =\leqslant \let \leq =\leqslant \let \ge =\geqslant \let \geq =\geqslant \def \Pr {\mathit {Pr}}\def \Fr {\mathit {Fr}}\def \Rey {\mathit {Re}}S$ be a complex smooth projective surface and $L$ be a line bundle on $S$. For any given collection of isolated topological or analytic singularity types, we show the number of curves in the linear system $|L|$ with prescribed singularities is a universal polynomial of Chern numbers of $L$ and $S$, assuming $L$ is sufficiently ample. More generally, we show for vector bundles of any rank and smooth varieties of any dimension, similar universal polynomials also exist and equal the number of singular subvarieties cutting out by sections of the vector bundle. This work is a generalization of Göttsche’s conjecture.

Let $X$ be a compact Kähler manifold and let $(L,{\it\varphi})$ be a pseudo-effective line bundle on $X$. We first define a notion of numerical dimension for pseudo-effective line bundles with singular metrics, and then discuss the properties of this numerical dimension. Finally, we prove a very general Kawamata–Viehweg–Nadel-type vanishing theorem on an arbitrary compact Kähler manifold.

We exhibit a pseudoeffective $\mathbb{R}$-divisor ${D}_{\lambda }$ on the blow-up of ${\mathbb{P}}^{3}$ at nine very general points which lies in the closed movable cone and has negative intersections with a set of curves whose union is Zariski dense. It follows that the diminished base locus ${\boldsymbol{B}}_{-}({D}_{\lambda })={\bigcup }_{A\,\text{ample}}\boldsymbol{B}({D}_{\lambda }+A)$ is not closed and that ${D}_{\lambda }$ does not admit a Zariski decomposition in even a very weak sense. By a similar method, we construct an $\mathbb{R}$-divisor on the family of blow-ups of ${\mathbb{P}}^{2}$ at ten distinct points, which is nef on a very general fiber but fails to be nef over countably many prime divisors in the base.

Let $k$ be a field and $\mathbb{V}$ the affine threefold in $\mathbb{A}^4_k$ defined by $x^m y=F(x, z, t)$, $m \ge 2$. In this paper, we show that $\mathbb{V} \cong \mathbb{A}^3_k$ if and only if $f(z, t): = F(0, z, t)$ is a coordinate of $k[z, t]$. In particular, when $k$ is a field of positive characteristic and $f$ defines a non-trivial line in the affine plane $\mathbb{A}^2_k$ (we shall call such a $\mathbb{V}$ as an Asanuma threefold), then $\mathbb{V}\ncong \mathbb{A}^3_k$ although $\mathbb{V} \times \mathbb{A}^1_k \cong \mathbb{A}^4_k$, thereby providing a family of counter-examples to Zariski’s cancellation conjecture for the affine 3-space in positive characteristic. Our main result also proves a special case of the embedding conjecture of Abhyankar–Sathaye in arbitrary characteristic.
