This article presents a brief review of our case studies of data-driven Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) for intelligently discovering advanced structural metal materials, including light-weight materials (Ti, Mg, and Al alloys), refractory high-entropy alloys, and superalloys. The basic bonding in terms of topology and electronic structures is recommended to be considered as the building blocks/units constructing the microstructures of advanced materials. It is highlighted that the bonding charge density could not only provide an atomic and electronic insight into the physical nature of chemical bond of materials but also reveal the fundamental strengthening/embrittlement mechanisms and the local phase transformations of planar defects, paving a path in accelerating the development of advanced metal materials via interfacial engineering. Perspectives on the knowledge-based modeling/simulations, machine-learning knowledge base, platform, and next-generation workforce for sustainable ecosystem of ICME are highlighted, thus to call for more duty on the developments of advanced structural metal materials and enhancement of research productivity and collaboration.

Malnutrition and acute kidney injury (AKI) are common complications in hospitalised patients, and both increase mortality; however, the relationship between them is unknown. This is a retrospective propensity score matching study enrolling 46 549 inpatients, aimed to investigate the association between Nutritional Risk Screening 2002 (NRS-2002) and AKI and to assess the ability of NRS-2002 and AKI in predicting prognosis. In total, 37 190 (80 %) and 9359 (20 %) patients had NRS-2002 scores <3 and ≥3, respectively. Patients with NRS-2002 scores ≥3 had longer lengths of stay (12·6 (sd 7·8) v. 10·4 (sd 6·2) d, P < 0·05), higher mortality rates (9·6 v. 2·5 %, P < 0·05) and higher incidence of AKI (28 v. 16 %, P < 0·05) than patients with normal nutritional status. The NRS-2002 showed a strong association with AKI, that is, the risk of AKI changed in parallel with the score of the NRS-2002. In short- and long-term survival, patients with a lower NRS-2002 score or who did not have AKI achieved a significantly lower risk of mortality than those with a high NRS-2002 score or AKI. Univariate Cox regression analyses indicated that both the NRS-2002 and AKI were strongly related to long-term survival (AUC 0·79 and 0·71) and that the combination of the two showed better accuracy (AUC 0·80) than the individual variables. In conclusion, malnutrition can increase the risk of AKI and both AKI and malnutrition can worsen the prognosis that the undernourished patients who develop AKI yield far worse prognosis than patients with normal nutritional status.

Seven-band grouper (Hyporthodus septemfasciatus) is a commercial rocky reef fish in East Asia that has been regarded as a promising species for aquaculture. To investigate the broodstock contributions to offspring for the sustainability of fry production, 62 individuals of H. septemfasciatus from two broodstocks and one offspring population were analysed using fluorescent-AFLP. A total of 602 bands were amplified and 70.10% of them were polymorphic. The numbers of polymorphic loci were 308 (Pbroodstock I = 55.50%) and 356 (Pbroodstock II = 63.12%) in the two broodstocks, and 294 (Poffspring = 52.88%) in the offspring, respectively. The average values of Shannon diversity index (I) and expected heterozygosity (H) were higher in the broodstock (Ibroodstock I = 0.281, Ibroodstock II = 0.244, Hbroodstock I = 0.185, Hbroodstock II = 0.161) than those in the offspring (Ioffspring = 0.243, Hoffspring = 0.161). AMOVA and FST analyses showed that significant genetic differentiation between broodstock and offspring populations, and limited effective broodstock population size has contributed to the offspring. Both STRUCTURE and Principal Coordinates Analysis (PCoA) also showed the three populations composed of two stocks and most offspring individuals (95.0%) only originated from 44.0% of the individuals of broodstock I, which may have negative effects on sustainable fry production. Therefore, genetic variation between broodstock and offspring should be monitored, and large effective size of broodstock should be employed to ensure the success of commercial breeding programmes. Our data provide a useful genetic basis for future planning of sustainable culture and management of H. septemfasciatus.

The association between serum carotenoids and the metabolic syndrome (MetS) remains uncertain, and little is known about this relationship in the Chinese population. The present study examined the association between serum carotenoid concentrations and the MetS in Chinese adults. We conducted a community-based cross-sectional study in which 2148 subjects (1547 women and 601 men) aged 50–75 years were recruited in urban Guangzhou, China. Dietary data and other covariates were collected during face-to-face interviews. Blood pressure, waist circumference, blood lipids, glucose and serum carotenoids (α-, β-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin, lycopene and lutein/zeaxanthin) were examined. We found dose–response inverse relationships between individual serum carotenoid concentrations and total carotenoids and the prevalence of the MetS after adjusting for potential confounders (P for trend < 0·001). The OR of the MetS for the highest (v. lowest) quartile were 0·31 (95 % CI 0·20, 0·47) for α-carotene, 0·23 (95 % CI 0·15, 0·36) for β-carotene, 0·44 (95 % CI 0·29, 0·67) for β-cryptoxanthin, 0·39 (95 % CI 0·26, 0·58) for lycopene, 0·28 (95 % CI 0·18, 0·44) for lutein+zeaxanthin and 0·19 (95 % CI 0·12, 0·30) for total carotenoids. Higher concentrations of each individual carotenoid and total carotenoids were significantly associated with a decrease in the number of abnormal MetS components (P for trend < 0·001–0·023). Higher serum carotenoid levels were associated with a lower prevalence of the MetS and fewer abnormal MetS components in middle-aged and elderly Chinese adults.

InN films have been grown on sapphire substrates nitrided by N plasma with different durations by radio-frequency plasma assisted molecular beam epitaxy (RF-MBE). In-depth investigation reveals that AlN is generated on a sapphire surface during the nitridation, and 60 min nitridation helps in the formation of an ordered and flat AlN interlayer between the substrate and the InN film, which improves the surface migration of In atoms on the substrate, and consequently helps in obtaining a single-crystalline c-plane InN film of high quality with 1.0 × 1019 cm−3 carrier density and 1350 cm2/(V·s) carrier mobility. Too short nitridation duration will result in a polycrystalline InN film, and too long nitridation duration will damage the surface quality of the newly generated AlN interlayer which consequently deteriorates the InN film quality. Control of the AlN interlayer quality plays a critical role in the growth of a high-quality InN epitaxial film on the sapphire substrate.

A total of 791 microsatellites (SSRs) were isolated from 7055 Panax ginseng expressed sequence tags (ESTs). According to primer design criteria, 68 primer pairs for EST-SSR were designed. Under an appropriate polymerase chain reaction (PCR) system, all EST-SSR primer pairs were screened against genomic DNA of Ji'anchangbo and Fusong'ermaya from Panax ginseng, and 43 EST-SSR primer pairs out of the above 68 resulted in PCR products. Then, all 43 pairs were detected in nine P. ginseng, two Panax quinquefolius and two Acanthopanax senticosus cultivars for polymorphisms, and 26 pairs (60.47%) were found to be polymorphic, accounting for 38.23% of the total number of designed primer pairs. These results demonstrate the possibility of developing EST-SSR markers using P. ginseng ESTs.

In vitro bulb scales of Lilium longiflorum×L. formosanum were used as explants to develop a highly efficient regeneration system. A high regeneration rate (100%) was reached through organogenesis on basal Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 1.0 mg/l 6-benzylaminopurine (6-BA) and 1.0 mg/l naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA). A genetic transformation system for the lily was developed using an Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated method. An improved genetic transformation rate (12‰) was obtained when the explants were pre-cultured for 3 days, immersed in bacterial suspension (OD600≈0.8) for 5 min, and co-cultivated for 5 days. The binary vector pBI121 containing Zm401, a maize pollen-specific gene, was introduced into the Agrobacterium strain LBA4404 and transformed into the explants using the genetic transformation system. Gene integration into the lily genome was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and PCR–Southern analysis. These results could lead to the production of new pollenless lily plants.

This paper addresses the dynamic dexterity of a planar 2-degree of freedom (DOF) parallel manipulator with virtual constraint. Without simplification, the dynamic formulation is derived by using the virtual work principle. The condition number of the inertia matrix of the dynamic equation is presented as a criterion to evaluate the dynamic dexterity of a manipulator. In order to obtain the best isotropic configuration of the dynamic dexterity in the whole workspace, two global performance indices, which consider the mean value and standard deviation of the condition number of the inertia matrix, respectively, are proposed as the objective function. For a given set of geometrical and inertial parameters, the dynamic dexterity of the parallel manipulator is more isotropic in the center than at the boundaries of the workspace.
