As evidence supporting the effectiveness of mental health and psychosocial interventions grows, more research is needed to understand optimal strategies for improving their implementation in diverse contexts. We conducted a qualitative process evaluation of a multicomponent psychosocial intervention intended to promote well-being among refugee, migrant and host community women in three diverse contexts in Ecuador and Panamá. The objective of this study is to describe the relationships among implementation determinants, strategies and outcomes of this community-based psychosocial intervention. The five implementation strategies used in this study included stakeholder engagement, promoting intervention adaptability, group and community-based delivery format, task sharing and providing incentives. We identified 10 adaptations to the intervention and its implementation, most of which were made during pre-implementation. Participants (n = 77) and facilitators (n = 30) who completed qualitative interviews reported that these strategies largely improved the implementation of the intervention across key outcomes and aligned with the study’s intervention and implementation theory of change models. Participants and facilitators also proposed additional strategies for improving reach, implementation and maintenance of this community-based psychosocial intervention.

Background: Catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs) are one of the most frequent causes of heathcare-associated infections and an important cause of preventable death. Central venous catheters (CVC) have been considered the most worrisome origin of CRBSI. Implemented preventive measures at most hospitals and published guidelines for the prevention of vascular catheter infections have focused mostly on CVCs. However, peripherally inserted venous catheters (PIVC)–related bloodstream infections have increased in recent years and are currently among the top 10 patient safety concerns for 2019. Objective: We describe the changes in the epidemiology of catheter-related bloodstream infections among acute-care hospitals reporting at the VINCat program (Infection Control and Antimicrobial Stewardship Catalan Program) from 2008 to 2018. Methods: Data on 55 hospitals in Catalonia reporting all the episodes of CRBSI diagnosed according to standardized definitions during 2008–2018 were used for the analysis. Participating hospitals were classified into 3 groups according to size: group 1 (>500 beds), 9 hospitals; group 2 (500–200 beds), 17 hospitals; and group 3 (<200 beds), 29 hospitals. Catheters were classified in 3 categories: CVCs, PICVCs, and short peripheral venous catheters (PVCs). Rates of catheter-related bloodstream infection (CR-BSI) were obtained by adjusting the total number of episodes by 1,000 hospital stays. Simple linear regressions were performed. Values of P ≤ .05 were considered statistically significant. Results: During the study period, 8,221 nosocomial episodes of CRBSI were diagnosed among the 55 participating hospitals. In total, 37,587,967 hospital stays were counted. The CRBSI rate was 0.22 episodes per 1,000 hospital stays (group 1, 0.28; group 2, 0.15; and group 3, 0.16), following a downward trend from 2008 to 2018 from 0.28 to 0.21 per 1,000 hospital stays (P < .005). Among them, CVC-BSI showed a downward trend (from 610 annual episodes in 2008 to 312 in 2018), and PICVC and PVC showed an upward trend (from 51 and 120 annual episodes in 2008 to 130 and 312 in 2018, respectively). Annual rates of PICVCs and PVCs showed an upward trend, but CVCs showed a downward trend in 2018 (P < .05): 0.09 per 1,000 hospital stays for PICVCs; 0.07 per 1,000 hospital stays for PVCs, and 0.04 episodes per 1,000 hospital stays for CVCs (Fig. 1). Conclusions: PIVC-related bloodstream infections have increased in recent years, whereas bloodstream infections related to CVC have followed a downward trend. Our hospitals should implement preventive measures to specially address the prevention of PICVC infections.

The aim of the present study was to describe Mediterranean diet (MD) adherence within a population of adolescents and to analyse the association of multiple factors with adherence. This included a consideration of diverse physical and mental health indicators. The present study was conducted with a representative sample of 761 adolescents (14·51 (sd 1·63) years) from twenty-five educational centres in a northern region of Spain. MD adherence was evaluated, alongside their health-related quality of life, self-esteem, body image satisfaction, BMI, physical activity (PA) level, maximum oxygen consumption, hours of nightly sleep, socio-demographic factors and academic performance. Of the adolescent population, 49 % reported high MD adherence. Being female and having higher levels of PA were found to be predictive factors of adherence to the MD. In addition, maximum oxygen consumption, the presence of environments favourable towards PA engagement and higher self-esteem were also predictive in females, whilst better academic performance and more nightly sleep were additional predictors in males. The associations found between the MD and other health indicators and habits highlight the need to develop promotion strategies from an inter-disciplinary and transversal standpoint.

Sow milk protects the piglet against infectious diseases through a variety of mechanisms. In this study, the presence of potentially probiotic lactic acid bacteria in this biological fluid was investigated. Milk samples were obtained from 8 sows and a total of 19 rod-shaped isolates were selected for identification and assessment of their probiotic potential. RAPD profiling revealed the existence of 8 different genetic profiles among them. One representative of each profile was selected for further characterization and they were identified as Lactobacillus reuteri, Lb. salivarius, Lb. plantarum, Lb. paraplantarum, Lb. brevis and Weissella paramesenteroides. Then, their probiotic potential was evaluated through different assays, including survival in conditions simulating those existing in the gastrointestinal tract, production of antimicrobial compounds, adherence to intestinal mucin, production of biogenic amines, degradation of mucin, and pattern of antibiotic sensitivity. Three strains, Lb. reuteri CR20 (a reuterin-producing strain), Lb. salivarius CELA2 (a bacteriocin-producing strain) and Lb. paraplantarum CLB7 displayed the highest probiotic potential.

Raman scattering measurements were carried out on a bulk, single crystal of wurtzite ZnO over a temperature range from 80 to 760 K and the temperature-dependent shift and broadening of the E2high and A1(LO) modes was analyzed. The E2high mode exhibits a visibly asymmetric line shape that can be related to the interaction with the continuum of acoustic two-phonon density of states. A Fermi resonance model was used to describe the E2high temperature dependence. On the other hand, the anharmonic shift and broadening of the A1(LO) mode are adequately accounted for by a decay model with a dominating Ridley channel involving TO and LA modes. Phonon lifetimes of ∼0.9 and 0.5 ps are found for the E2high and A1(LO) modes, respectively, which corroborates that anharmonic decay involves in both cases a three-phonon process. The A1(LO)lifetime is one order of magnitude lower than that of GaN, which suggests that hot phonon effects should be expected to play a less relevant role in carrier relaxation in ZnO as compared with GaN.

In this work we investigate the lattice damage induced in ZnO implanted with potential group V acceptors by means of Raman scattering. ZnO samples were implanted with N and P to high doses and Raman spectra were obtained prior and after rapid thermal annealing (RTA). Characteristic disorder-activated modes are observed in the spectra that can be used to assess the degree of lattice damage. ZnO samples were also implanted with native Zn+ and O+ ions under similar conditions to study specific effects of implantation with N+ and P+. As revealed by the intensity of disorder-activated bands, the implantation induced lattice damage is considerably higher for Zn+ than for the lighter O+ ion. In samples implanted with N+ additional Raman peaks emerge that are not observed either in the samples implanted with the native Zn+ and O+ ions or in the samples implanted with P+, thus pointing to a local vibrational mode of N or a N complex as the origin of these modes. Disorder-activated features are fully removed by RTA, indicating a high degree of lattice recovery by RTA even for the heavily damaged ZnO samples implanted with Zn+.
