Limited and inconsistent associations between cholesterol and egg consumption and type 2 diabetes risk have been observed in Western countries. In the present study, the association of dietary cholesterol and egg intakes with type 2 diabetes risk was examined prospectively. The study subjects comprised 27 248 men and 36 218 women aged 45–75 years who participated in the second survey of the Japan Public Health Center-based Prospective Study and had no histories of type 2 diabetes or other serious diseases. Dietary cholesterol and egg intakes were estimated using a validated 147-item FFQ. The OR of self-reported, physician-diagnosed type 2 diabetes over 5 years were estimated using multiple logistic regression. A total of 1165 newly diagnosed cases of type 2 diabetes were self-reported. Although dietary cholesterol intake was not associated with type 2 diabetes risk in men, it was found to be associated with a 23 % lower odds of type 2 diabetes risk in women in the highest quartile of intake, albeit not statistically significant, compared with those in the lowest quartile (Ptrend= 0·08). Such risk reduction was somewhat greater among postmenopausal women; the multivariable-adjusted OR for the highest quartile of cholesterol intake compared with the lowest quartile was 0·68 (95 % CI 0·49, 0·94; Ptrend= 0·04). No association between egg intake and type 2 diabetes risk was found in either men or women. In conclusion, higher intake of cholesterol or eggs may not be associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes in Japanese populations. The observed association between decreased type 2 diabetes risk and higher dietary cholesterol intake in postmenopausal women warrants further investigation.

Here we apply a two-phase flow model to simulate snow avalanche motion. Flowing snow is modeled as a Bingham fluid. Small-scale laboratory experiments were conducted using a rotating viscometer to validate the constitutive model. Experimental scale model test-runs were also performed, and run-out distances and impact pressures obtained in the model tests were reproduced using the two-phase flow model. Comparisons revealed that the simulated results were strongly dependent on the basal friction angle and calculation mesh size. Although the method reproduced the laboratory model results quite well, constitutive aspects of the basal surface remained unsolved. Future research will need to incorporate a numerical technique to handle the basal boundary, such as a boundary-fitted coordinate technique.

A new adsorbent, microporous polyethylene chopped fibre, was produced from a high density polyethylene. This can adsorb lipopolysaccharides (LPS) linearly up to 2 h, and showed the highest capacity to adsorb LPS when compared with two other polyethylene-based adsorbents and a polystyrene-based adsorbent. More than twice as much orange II and 4-nitroquinoline N oxide were adsorbed in the new adsorbent as was LPS. The adsorption isotherm of the new adsorbent for LPS was of Ln type, the correlation between adsorption and concentration of solute was proportional; whereas orange II and 4-nitroquinoline N oxide were of L type (greater adsorption than Ln type); tetrachloroethylene adsorption was of S type, less than Ln type. Adsorption of LPS to the new adsorbent increased when temperature rose, whereas adsorption of orange II and 4-nitroquinoline N oxide decreased. These data suggest that the binding of LPS to the new adsorbent is a hydrophobic interaction, whereas the binding of both orange II and 4-nitroquinoline N oxide is not. The new adsorbent has a greater potential for the removal of endotoxin from tap water than other commercially available adsorbents such as charcoal and Amberlite XAD-2.

The microporous polyethylene hollow fibre membrane is capable of adsorbing small-sized lipopolysaccharides (LPS) prepared by sonication dispersion, column chromatography on Sephadex G-75 and filtration through a filter membrane with a nominal pore size of 0·025 μg. Small-sized LPS had a one-thousandth of endotoxin activity as compared to intact LPS, when determined by the Synthetic Chromogenic Substrate method of LAL with a specific endotoxin activity of 73·7 ng/μg LPS. Fluorescent microscopy of fluorescein conjugated LPS on a microporous polyethylene hollow fibre showed that fiuorescein-LPS was adsorbed through the entire depth of the membrane texture. Accordingly the adsorption capacity of the filter for small-sized LPS was determined as 1·65 mg LPS/3·68 m2 surface/116 mg fibre/module.

An integrated numerical model for groundwater flow and radionuclide migration analyses in a water-saturated HLW repository with a multiple-canister configuration is developed by incorporating the heterogeneity of fractured host rock based on the previous multiple-canister model (MCFT2D [1, 2]). The current model incorporates i) heterogeneity of the fractured host rock represented stochastically by discrete fractures, ii) disposal-pit vertical emplacement concept, iii) representation of the waste package consisting of a waste canister and a bentonite-filled buffer, and iv) a user-determined repository configuration of multiple canisters using the repository parameters such as disposal tunnel spacing, waste package pitch, tunnel diameter, the number of tunnels in a repository, and the number of canisters in a tunnel. The current model can facilitate investigations into the effects of heterogeneous fractured host rock on water flow and nuclide migration for the different configurations of multiple canisters, as well as optimization of the repository design parameters in terms of release of nuclides from the repository.

The H12 performance assessment (PA) provided a test for the robustness of a HLW repository system concept based on structured siting and design, taking account of a wide range of potentially suitable Japanese geological environments. The generic nature of the host rock in the H12 assessment means, however, that emphasis is placed verymuch on strong EBS performance. The assessment included a comprehensive evaluation of uncertainty and potentially detrimental factors, including perturbations due to external events and processes. Despite the considerable uncertainty at the current stage of the Japanese program, a safety case that is adequate for the aims of the assessment can be made by a strategy of employing conservatism where there is uncertainty and stressing the reliability and effectiveness of the performance of the near-field. The aim of this paper is to present the H12 PA in a way which makes the PA process clearer and the implications of the results more meaningful, both to workers within the PA field and to a wider technical audience.

Both steady-state current and dielectric-loss measurements were performed on a liquid-crystalline material, 4-(trans-4-pentylcyclohexyl)benzonitryl, in an isotropic liquid phase, which provide information on generation and behavior of ions, dominating DC and AC conductivity, respectively. The frequency dependence measurements of dielectric-loss can successfully estimate such characteristics of ions as total quantity of electricity, diffusion constant (mobility), and the size. With help of chemical analysis like ion chromatography and semi-empirical quantum chemical computation, the majority of ions, especially dominating AC conductivity, were estimated to be inorganic cations with Stokes' radius of around 2 × 10−8(cm), either naked or hydrated, and solvated ions with Stokes' radius of around 5 × 10−8(cm), most probably with the liquid-crystalline molecules at the solvation number of 1.2 in average. The present microscopic investigation of conduction mechanism is of great help for development of liquid-crystalline materials, especially for use in sophisticated displays with excellent picture quality.

This paper presents the results of a discrete fracture network modelling for the non-sorbing tracer migration experiments, which were conducted in the fractured rock at the Kamaishi mine. A newly developed in-plane heterogeneity model, which can address the channelling effects within a fracture, and the matrix diffusion model, which can simulate the retardation time due to the matrix diffusion adjacent to fracture were applied in this study. As a result, the matrix diffusion model better reproduces the general shape of breakthrough curves. The transport aperture At was approximately one order of magnitude larger than the hydraulic aperture Ac derived from the cubic law.

A method of first principle calculation of alloy phase diagram was developed by the combination of first principle energy band calculation, cluster expansion method (CEM) and Monte Carlo (MC) simulation, where the effective multi-body potential energy for the flip test in MC simulation was obtained by the decomposition of the total energy by CEM. This method was applied to Cu-Au binary system. The calculated phase diagram agreed with that of CVM by introducing the dependence of the lattice constant on the concentration of the whole system. Furthermore an attempt of introducing the effect of local lattice relaxation was performed by the consideration of the local concentration. The order-disorder transition temperature became closer to the experimental value by adjustment of the local lattice constant depending on the concentration in the local region consisted of up to the second nearest neighbors of the atom tested for flipping.
